The pricing is surprisingly inexpensive for what you get. The service was relatively quick and efficient. When we placed our order, we were told 20 minutes. Because we had our dog with us, we waited outside and when the order was ready, the gentleman brought it out to us. We didn't order a whole lot. we had seen Happy Garden on Yelp, and it sounded intriguing. We felt that we needed to stop by for a sample even though we had already had a great lunch in Oakdale.

We ordered: California Roll - 5 - I would appreciate some julienned cucumbers but many sushi-ya's no longer put those in. They add a bit of texture and flavor. Spicy Tuna Roll - 5 - Just the right amount of heat. The rice was good....

I'm not sure that it was seasoned but there was enough flavor in the Tuna. Inari - 5 - A very simple dish. Sushi rice stuffed into tofu skins that have been cooked in a seasoning liquid. I wish places would offer Inari stuffed with rice, green peas, slivered egg and bamboo shoots. Of course they would charge more but that's okay. Egg Rolls - 5 - Mostly stuffed with Cabbage and Carrots. These are delicious after they've cooled down from the fryer. I could eat these everyday. The inside of the restaurant was spacious and clean. If we didn't have the Princess with us, we would have eaten in.

We went to Happy Garden because we are looking for some place new and it had outstanding reviews. I do not know if it is under new ownership or employees called in sick but our experience was disappointing. First, I will say on the positive side the gentleman that took our order and served us was very nice. He repeatedly apologized though he did not say specifically what for and thanked us. Also, the prices were relatively inexpensive but not what I would consider a bargain especially given the quality. Well the gentleman was very nice, the service was extremely slow. There were two other parties in the restaurant when we got there and one came in close to when we were leaving. It was not what I would consider especially busy. It was quite a long time before he came over to take our order. Then, it took around an hour for it to come out. It was reaching the point where we were tempted to get up and walk out. We had considered driving into Stockton to go to our favorite sushi restaurant and given the amount of time it took for service, we probably would have been home about the same time though we would have burned more fuel and spend more at the restaurant. We ordered an appetizer and it was brought to us at the end after our meals. I noticed he also kept forgetting things for other tables and at one table brought they're entrees out roughly 20 minutes apart from each other. I was also disappointed with the food. Some of it could be choked up to a difference in taste. We got both sushi rolls and Chinese food. The Chinese food dishes we got were significantly different then the dishes by the same names at other Chinese restaurants. My wife and I were both disappointed but once again this specific issue could be a difference in tastes and preferences. My wife got a dragon roll and said it was fairly tasteless. I did not tasted so I can only go based on her opinion.

I got a spicy tuna roll which was in my opinion mediocre. I prefer the local grocery store sushi over what we got there. It also was not fresh. The center of one of my roll slices from the center of the roll was still partially frozen...

in the middle. I realize they probably do a low volume and probably make a bunch ahead of time then freeze it and thaw it which I would rather have them do then eat fish that was not fresh but it is not what I would call high quality still. When he got our water, he brought a tub of ice out to the counter and was digging in it with his hands to get ice out for the cups. The ice was kind of stuck and he was really having to break it up with his hands. We ended up with out a lot of ice in the cups and the water was room temperature so quickly melted the ice but did not get the water super cold. I feel bad leaving a negative review especially since I wonder if this was an off night for some reason given how many positive reviews this restaurant has but at the same time, we picked this restaurant because of the reviews which it did not live up to. We will not be coming back here again.

Broccoli beef with side of rice al-a-cart

Excellent cost performance ratio and the sushi is California good (not Japanese good) wasabi is the horseradish based version which is good but expected at the price point. No music quiet spot, can hear neighbor business, and the slow ASMR drip of sink. Had the broccoli beef, cheese wontons, and rice all are excellent for the price, the beef had a more streaky mouth feel than slimy l, which I find refreshing. The sause was thinner and allowed to taste the flavors of the beef and broccoli without drowning out the flavor. The nova Scotia roll was a good fit, as it was 8 pieces, deep fried, and the salmon tasted fresh aside the cream cheese. I would sum it up as "out of town authentic" And excellent.

I won't tell you, because it would ruin the fun to try new things. Rated from left to right, 3rd , 2nd , 4th, 1st .

This place have good sushi and good service. It's a nice little mom and pop shop nothing to fancy but very homely and cute. The reason why I gave this place a 4 out of 5 was because I went and picked up my food and the gentleman behind the counter seemed confused when I asked about extra sauce for my cream cheese wontons. Which isn't a bad thing but it just made the paying process a little bit slower. Also when it comes to the food the spider roll is giant. I like eating my rolls all in one bit but the spider roll is just to big but tastes good. Other than that, it was a wonder experience and great food.

Cannot believe I haven't written a review for this AMAZING little jem of a place!!!! The food here is SO GOOD!!! We have been faithful (when we can afford it) customers here for four years now.The tempura is so light and airy.Absolutely Perfect!! The Chicken Katsu is also one of our favorites,Their beef is delicious as well.I could go on and on about how good everything is but you've really gotta give this place a try. Try the Volcano or Dragon roll!!! YUM!!! Even their salad dressing is unforgettable! Oh and they also have assorted beers and hot and cold Sake. read more

The owners are very nice. I gave it 4 stars for both good/bad reasons. The food is good and the prices are very fair. The sushi is okay, the Chinese food, I thought, was very good. The place could use a good scrubbing down! The menus and soy sauce bottles are covered in a film of grease. I eat here once a week and they are always consistent!! read more

We love this place. It has been overlooked by many, I am sure. But please try it for yourself. We love the owners, and the food it great. Don't judge from the location(next to railroad tracks, so is Taco Bell) AND don't judge from the bathroom. Food is delicious! Our go to for weekend linner (Lunch and dinner) read more

Honestly, I did not think the food was good at all. I won't be back, and we didnt even save our left overs. They went straight into the trash. We ordered a California Roll, Orange Chicken, Egg Rolls and Chicken Chow Mein. None of it was good. Everything was dry, flavorless and basically all had the same exact taste. Except the egg rolls. They had the same taste as the rest, but instead of being dry they were dripping with grease. In the bottom of the to-go box was a puddle of grease also. Food for sure only gets one star, but the place was clean and the service was friendly so I gave them an extra star for that. read more

Heading from the mountains back to the Bay Area, we're always looking for good a place to stop and this was definitely it. We were craving sushi and ordered the salmon sashimi, unagi avocado, scallop roll (fried scallop, cucumbers, and 3 kinds of roe on top), and a tuna roll. The sushi was great! Prices were incredibly reasonable, fish quantity and quality were high, and the rice and stick of the rolls were really good. Additionally, we walked in a few minutes after closing time and the owner was beyond welcoming. He and his wife are incredibly kind and diligent business owners and even gave us complimentary fried ice cream after the meal - not that we needed it given the size of the sushi rolls! We'll be back again read more

Let's start off by appearance; its not appealing whatsoever and the place smells disgusting. Almost zero acknowledgement. In addition, they didn't bother to ask if we wanted anything to drink (we literally were/are the only people in here) so there is no excuse for the lack of attention. Then we had to ask for water, to top that off, it was disgusting tap water with NO ICE! read more

I live in Southern California, and also lived in the Bay Area. Love Sushi and have eaten at hundreds of some of the best places. If you want a traditional sushi bar then you will not find that here. But if you want the best quality and quantity, of any sushi bar I have ever eaten at then this is your place. And extremely good service and very nice hard-working owners. read more

We went in and walked out after short minutes. The bathroom was so disgusting that my 5 year old boy refused to even go. They never addressed our presence and never asked us if we want beverages after we been sitting there for sometime. Tv wasn't on nor music so it was pure awkward silence with no one in the shop. It smelled bad and was dirty everywhere. Was worrying since they serve raw fish and other food products that needs to be made and served in a clean environment. It was horrible..... read more

Great pricing and good sushi. My only complaint is they put wasabi and ginger in with my to go box and it got all over the sushi. And I hate wasabi and ginger so it turned me off. Was still very good. I'll go back and make sure I ask for my order without. read more

Eating here is the high point of EVERY trip between our homes in Berkeley and Long Barn (Sonora Pass). What a treasure! We were so delighted to find such an oasis on the 3 hour drive.. I have the unagi donburi every time and my husband has had a variety of items on the menu, most recently the shrimp tempura obento. We love the food and since we make this trip often enough to satisfy our cravings, we don't even eat Japanese food in Berkeley or SF anymore. - Happy Garden is in a strip of restaurants including a drive-through Starbucks, on the north side of Hwy 120/Yosemite Ave just as you come to Escalon. which is a few miles west of Oakdale. Easy access from the road, good parking, gas station - you can figure it out. Believe me, it's worth it! Yummy - and the owners are delightful people. There's also a small Chinese menu. read more

By chance, I saw this restaurant while gassing up across the highway. A Japanese restaurant in Escalon? To say the least, I found the idea questionable. Boy, was I wrong! The food is excellent. If you are into sushi not drenched in sauces, this is the place for you. The fish is fresh and delightful. My mother, who is a native Okinawan, said she hasn't had Japanese food like this in America since she left the island over 40 years ago. Fortunately, I live 5 minutes away. A gem in the valley - I just hope it can make it through the recession. read more
