I already had low expectations and was still disappointed. I've had pad thai before from other places and this is the first time I had pad thai with broccoli. I guess that a new thing. I tried to make it vegan by taking out the egg and fish sauce. I've done this before with other places and it always taste just like you're regular pad thai. Let me preface this by saying I understand their native language. I've ordered here multiple times and they always try to over charge me. When I point out the discrepancy between the price on the menu and my bill, they always back track and give me the menu price. When the little girl takes my money (the correct amount), I hear her mom telling her daughter in chinese "can't charge this guy extra" along other snide remarks that aren't family friendly. So there is no dispute that they charge customers extra. Disgusting way of doing business. If they want to raise the price, they should just raise it. Not even considering the fact that they are setting a bad example for the kids that work there. With that said, their prices are cheaper than their competitors; the sole reason why I went there. But I've thought about it and I am willing to pay more and go to a legitimate establishment. If they are willing to be dishonest with your bill, who know what else they are doing with your food. Don't let the other reviews turn you away. I got the chicken schezuan combo. The staff was efficient. Price is extremely affordable and the food is great quality. Chicken is so much fresher than at other places and everything was cooked perfectly (other Chinese spots are usually over cooked or taste reheated). Egg Roll was nice and crispy; it hit the spot. Pork Fried rice was perfectly cooked for me. I wish it were a little spicier but the taste was still great. I was a little hesitant based on the other reviews but decided to give it a chance because I was so close. I have no idea what the other reviews are on about..a little too critical considering restaurants everywhere are struggling due to the pandemic. Worst place ever. I was passing by one evening and I figured I would try this place and order takeout from them. I noticed the staff wasn't taking the usual precautions for Covid nor were they wearing their face mask properly. When I mentioned it to the old lady whom acts like the boss she just starts yelling at you. Happy Gathering is my go-to for fast food. I'm not much of a fast food fan in general, but something about their sesame chicken and scallion pancakes has me craving it pretty much bimonthly. It's embarrassing, I know. But for $8.00 and 2-3 meals worth of food it's probably the most bang-for-your-buck you'll get in this area. Let me begin by saying that I never review anything, and that this is in fact my first review. I admit, my motivations are altogether selfish, but more on that later: Taking chinese takeout as a culinary category all its own, this is the best I've ever had. Real ingredients, real fried rice, real pork, real chicken, all amazingly non-greasy and well seasoned. I had the gen tso's and pork fried rice delivered to my door within maybe 45 minutes of my call at 11ish on a Wednesday, total cost: 9 bucks, 2 of them being tip. So, its good, its cheap, and its not fast. What else? This: the portions are generous (the plastic troughs they deliver food here are much "deeper" than what I'm used to seeing in the city). The next time you feel like some insta-chinese in Astoria, give Happy Gathering a shot; id like to make sure this place sticks around and ensure I'll be knee deep in Gen Tso's for the forseeable future, and you will too. read more

Bentley's right that ownership has changed, but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say its 1-star and no good anymore. Truth be told, I feel like the kitchen has become incrementally (barely noticeable unless you go as often as I do) cleaner than it was before. They've also kept the menu exactly the same as before which means that you can: 1.) Still order General Tso's Chicken wings and crab rangoon when you're jonesing for fried foods. 2.) They still offer both general tso's sauce and sweet and sour sauce. 3.) Their fried rice remains the brown, chinese rice style fried rice as opposed to the yellow crap that New York chinese takeout places seem to favor. I'll admit that the garlic sauce/brown sauce/standard chinese takeout sauce has dropped a notch from indescribably delicious to just plain decent. Not the worst, but probably one of the most ghetto chinese food i ever ate. Its definitely catered to non-asians, Its not bad but goddamn depressing when you get the food. The taste isn't bad but this is extremely american ghettofied chinese food. Im korean, i can't eat most real/native chinese food, its a bit too much. So i eat mainly korean chinese or american chinese. This is Panda Express down graded by 10. Greasy good cheap eats, yes. But a bit depressing. This place is horrid. The woman yells at patrons. She is absolutely a horrid individual. They steal gas from other businesses on the block and have nearly caused an explosion and they have poor ventilation which causes surrounding neighbors health concerns. In addition, they allow their under age children to work 12 to 16 hour days. Why is it your children's fault their parents didn't have higher aspirations? It's not! Yes, it's American-ized Chinese (that also happens to serve Thai Paid Thai) so don't expect what you'd be able to order from Chinatown or Chinese food from Flushing. I've had everything here from the Sweet & Sport Pork/Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Orange Flavor Chicken, BBQ Spare Rib Tips, Regular Fried Chicken, Shrimp w Lobster Sauce, Beef & Broccoli and a plethora of other items from their menu. And in addition to being a tiny bit cheaper than the dozens of take out Chinese spots in Astoria, the quality and serving size is worth what you pay for. On top of that, they prepare the food fairly quick. They're practically open on every holiday and this also included when hurricane Sandy was hitting New York City pretty hard. It's a small place that's family owned/ran and they're nice. So if you want Americanized-Chinese take out, this is your joint. I had the Egg Drop Soup - it was greasy and not good. I also got the Moo Shu Pork, which I can safely say was the worst I've had in NYC in 21 years. Really disgusting. Not a good choice. I ordered from Happy Gathering for the first time today because my usual Chinese delivery place was closed. I have been a regular at my old place for years, but let me tell you, Happy Gathering is my new place. In one night, with one order, my whole house has been converted. Our food was fast, hot, and delicious. They gave us free crab rangoon (thanks guys!). The egg rolls are flawless. The pork fried rice is simple and awesome. I am currently eating the General Tso & crab rangoon that I got from this place and it's soOoOo good (the crab rangoon is heavenly).
