Also ordered a side of Hunan Picked Vegetables. The Weekend Special components were OK, enjoying the fish and soup. Should note, the soup portion was literally half what comes in any restaurant special portion. Would not recommend the Hunan Pickeled Vegetables, which were basically cabbage with two whole cloves of garlic. Not significantly flavorful and not worth the price. Lunch special I get is the L33 bamboo shoots with shredded pork over brown rice (you get a lot) and a super small hot n sour soup for $12.15 or $13 with tax. Busy at lunch. One of the things I like about city living is, you can walk through a neighborhood and come across a restaurant you weren't even looking for. I had a feeling Happy Hot Hunan would be great. And it was. Dinner fell short of five stars because of their wonton soup. I've had better in Philadelphia's Chinatown. The wontons were fine, but the soup lacked depth. No slivers of pork or greens other than a sprinkling of scallions. It was a little boring. But our main dish made up for it. If you ever see double cooked pork with tofu on the menu, order it. Having eaten it years ago, also in NY, I'd been on the lookout. No luck.... until today. This was as good as I remembered it to be with thin sliced tofu, like the meat, also double cooked. Prices are reasonable, portions, big. When I walked to the restroom I took note of neighboring tables. Every dish I saw looked wonderful, most different than typical Chinese American fare. This place is always busy! After living in UWS for 3 years, we finally got a chance to visit this place. The restaurant is small but cozy. We had to wait for 20 minutes for a table and after we were seated, tea was automatically served. We ordered wonton soup, Chinese mustard greens and ground pork and their speciality crispy pork intestine, rice is not included so you need to order rice as a side dish. The food arrived in huge portion (family style). The crispy pork intestine was too salty while the Chinese mustard green with ground pork was bland. The service was fast for the food but took forever for the drink that we ordered to be delivered. Recently dined here for the first time and was impressed by the incredible flavors. When I came, the inside was packed with most of the tables occupied, but the service was still efficient thanks to the many attentive waiters. The tables are close together and lots of college students dine here--makes a good quick and casual spot. More chili-hot or sour-hot options in Hunan food. With that said, some dishes overlap, but the flavors are different. Ended up getting the following: -Spicy cucumber salad ($8.95) -Three Pepper Chicken ($16.95) -Chairman Mao's Red Braised Pork ($17.55) -Fried Egg w Chopped Chili ($13.95) -Beef in Hot Chili Sauce ($19.95) The spicy cucumber salad was good. You must like pickled flavors though, which separates it from Szechuan style. The three pepper chicken was the most the similar to Szechuan, minus the numbing of course. I asked them to make it more spicy and they complied. Chairman Mao's Braised Pork was excellent. It has a sweetness to it that's a perfect complement to the spicy food. This is one of the namestay dishes in Hunan cuisine. The Fried egg with chopped chili was my favorite. It was also asked to made more spicy and was among the top spiciest dishes. It was a little salty. I'd come back for this for sure. The Beef in Hot Chili Sauce was flavorful and good amounts of beef inside. The menu technically says its creamy. I just had a bad experience at this place. I'll start by saying the food was mediocre, nothing to brag about and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. When I entered i quickly realized that it's a Chinese restaurant that mostly Chinese people go to, lots of college kids in there. It's was totally ok because this is manhattan and I love the diversity of my city but I was the only black dining and from the beginning I didn't feel welcome at all. The host was very uninviting and barely acknowledged me and pointed in a rude manner for me to sit. He took my order in a snobby way , didn't bring me water as he did every customer who came in after me. There were two younger customers sitting across from me and the host started to hold a loud conversation with them and both of the kids started looking up at me. Of course I couldn't understand anything they were saying but it was the energy I was getting and body language. They mentioned the word "Harlem" several times and you just know when someone is talking about you in their language. The host seemed upset that I was there to dine. I wasn't even all the way done with my food and I was bought my check while the other customers who were there before were bought more hot tea. The host/ waiter never checked on me at any point and greeted all other Chinese customers who entered after me warmly. Came across this Chinese restaurant when we were looking for a good place to actually sit down and eat. Very clean inside. Free WiFi is a plus. Not your typical Chinese so don't be expecting the generic dishes. Very quick service. I ordered the three pepper chicken and I really enjoyed the spicy dish. The chicken was a little drier than I would have liked but it was crispy and crunchy which I liked. I eat a lot of rice as well so I had to order another cup of rice. Nice ginger and garlic flavor but seems like there was no salt added. Also, check out my picture for the side egg drop soup. Never seen a Chinese place giving such a small portion of soup for lunch.
