Our two dogs love this place. We often leave them there for a week or more if we are traveling, and when they are exhausted when we get them home. They'll sleep for days. The strain at the leash to get into the gate when we arrive. The staff obviously loves dogs. There is plenty of room for them to run and play outside. It's just great. read more

If you value the health of your dog, I would exercise caution especially on crowded holiday weekends. We left our 18 month old large breed dog here recently. He eats 4 cups of food a day. I measured out 2 gallon sized zip slider bags with 12 cups each (24 cups total). Instructions were both on the bag and detailed letter I left with him. During his stay I received a phone call he threw up 2 socks. The vet said as long as he's eating and eliminating that he is not obstructed. The facility said he's both eating and eliminating fine. This was the only call or update I received over 6 days. I picked him up today and was shocked to see the significant weight he lost. I have had experience with this the same breed in other free range facilities, but not to this extent. When I got home and looked in his bag of belongings, there was an entire gallon sized bag with 12 cups of food. I actually measured it out into a mixing bowl to confirm. He came back with HALF his food. I called and the GM told me, not true. The staff said they fed him and I got only "half a ziploc bag back." Um. Not true. She goes on to say, I don't have all good food I say I have. She asked for photos. I sent them. Still was aggressively blaming me and not the reality in front of my face. Then it was that I "didn't measure correctly". Not true. Then it was "we are going to look at the staff camera but it will take DAYS and you can't see it." Right. Then it was "we saw the video and we see very clearly he ate 2 meals a day" about an hour later. (PS. No way if he came back with HALF his food). Finally, it was because of the socks he threw up days ago. Right again. My dog was ravishingly hungry and I've had feed him him multiple times since we came home. He will recover. Clearly they are aggressively saying nothing to see here, it's you, which is even more alarming. So great if you had stellar experiences here and have been coming for years. Lucky you. We did not. And had I read a review like this, I would have done some more due diligence and most likely taken a chance elsewhere. read more

I was very excited to find these folks - brought my dog out for a meet & greet, then did an overnight in advance of our leaving her for a week with them. I had a reservation for my dog to board at Happy Hounds for 7-14 Jan 2023. I called on 4 Jan and spoke to the manager, Sharon, saying I was bringing my dog for her reservation on Saturday and that we'd like to bring her at 10am if that was okay. Sharon's response was "wait, what day were you coming?" then asked me to hold on. She came back and said she had me down for Sunday, then went on to say that unfortunately they had had to close the kennel because kennel cough had gone around, and the vet advised that they close for a few days. Sharon asked if we could postpone our trip to leave Monday instead. I told her no, that we were flying out Saturday afternoon. I asked why I had not gotten a call, why I was finding out when *I* called *her*, not the other way around - and she said that they had only just found out, that they had just been calling people and hadn't gotten to me yet. I asked how long she had known they might need to close and she said "just the last day or two". A day or two when they could have called people to suggest they find backup accommodations because there was a possibility they would need to close. Instead, here I was less than three days before a trip, finding out because I called them, that I had to make other arrangements. Poorly handled, and horrible communication that left me in a real bind. I contacted their vet, who was very generous with his time in answering questions I had about kennel cough in general and how it moves through a vaccinated population, risks, etc. I also asked when the possibility that the kennel would need to be closed was first discussed with Happy Hounds, and after consulting his notes told me he discussed it with them on *28 December*, a full week earlier. So not only was this poorly handled, with horrible communication, but Sharon lied about when they knew there was a chance they would need to close. How can I ever trust these people to give me an honest assessment of how my dog is doing when I call to check? How can I ever trust that I would get the truth of what happened if there was an accident? How can I take their word for anything about my dog's care? The answer is that I can't, so I'm done. read more

This is a fantastic place to take your dog. We use them for doggie daycare as well as for overnight stays. Our dog absolutely loves it and is always happy to go. When we pick him up he is ready for a nap after all the playing he has done. Everyone we have met has been extremely nice and you know your dog is in good hands. My husband and I used happy hounds for awhile and we USED to love them. Until they called me one day recently when we tried to make a reservation, and basically told us that they couldn't handle our dog because he has some separation anxiety (it's usually just him barking when he's by himself, hardly an issue that should lead to denying a reservation). They told us it would be best for THEM if we booked him somewhere else, AND, that they had a lot of new staff who were inexperienced..I'm sorry, what?! You hire employees to take care of peoples dogs who don't know how to take care of dogs?? Extremely disappointing that a facility which is supposed to be professionally equipped to deal with different kinds of dogs cannot accommodate because they choose to hire incompetent staff. We used blue ridge vet's daycare program and they were fantastic, had no issues with our sweet guy and in fact had nothing but positive things to say about his behavior. We will never use Happy Hounds again. read more

We used Happy Hounds Lodge over our spring break vacation, and we were overall pleased with the level care their staff gave our dog. The idea of a no kennel/cage boarding situation appealed to us, as our dog doesn't like cages. The grounds are large, set in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, and properly fenced that gave our dog plenty of space to explore and run with the pack. They required an assessment of my dog's temperament, as well as all the necessary shots. The reason for the 4-star rating instead of a 5 is due to the cost. I wish they offered a break for stays over a week. read more

Diane W. My dog, Sully, has been going to Happy Hounds daycare for a year and he stays with them when we go on vacations. He jumps out of the car excited when he arrives in the mornings. After playing with his friends all day he comes home happily exhausted. On days that Sully doesn't attend Happy Hounds he stands at the car in the morning and whines to go. I recently went oversees for 12 days and sent my 3 furry kids to Happy hounds. They are older and I didn't want them to be alone or caged. They had a wonderful time and I know they were well cared for. They had a human companion 24 hours a day, they had free run of the home and they were able to spend lots of time outside making other friends. I would absolutely send them there again without hesitation. You can tell they love dogs and treat them as their own. I was able to relax and enjoy my vacation knowing my babies were ok. We have been taking our three rescue dogs to Happy Hounds for the last 18 months after moving to Virginia and trying a more traditional kennel arrangement a couple of times. Our dogs range from age 14 to age 6 and both the older Cocker Spaniel and younger Pomeranian have age and medications which require care and attention. The staff take wonderful care of the dogs and I am confident they are getting their medication. The dogs love Happy Hounds -- in fact, they get very excited as we get closer. When we pick them up they are happy to see us but not eager to leave. And they sleep well for the next couple days after all the fresh air and running around outside. We love it here! Anytime we need overnight boarding for my dog, we choose to go here. He enjoys it so much! There are acres for my dog to run outside. For anyone in NoVA this is the place for your pup to stay overnight and daycare. They don't stay in separate kennels, they have doggie beds all around in one open area. I worked at Happy Hounds for a whole summer and was appalled by the treatment of the staff. I would work 8-9 hour days and not be allowed any break or sitting time. The owner was never nice to any is the workers and always found a way to work us to the bone. They used bark collars on dogs with out owner permission, and dog fights often broke out and were not reported to the owners. I was even bitten by the own owners dog multiple times and nothing was done about it. read more

Our dog, Kirby, has been going to Happy Hounds Lodge for over seven years (since he was a pup). They are possibly the nicest people in the world. They have a large fenced in acreage out in the countryside that is like heaven for dogs. And the dogs sleep in their (very nice and very clean house -- how do they do it?!) They are very careful to meet every dog beforehand to make sure it's safe around other dogs and they check vaccinations religiously. They are waaay out in Virginia but will do pick up and drop off. Best of all Kirby loves it there! When he sees Amy (one of the daughters of the owner) pull up, he is ecstatic!!! I have no idea whether pricing is competitive because this is the only place I would ever send my dog. BTW, they actually kept another dog that was boarding with them because the owner couldn't take care of it and helped her find a new home. She ended up with my neighbor; she's their dream dog. I suspect they do this kind of match making pretty often because they love love love dogs. read more
