Too many dogs crammed into one area - specifically the outdoor play area. When the trash truck comes to empty the dumpsters, the dogs get scared and frantically try to escape the small fenced space. My 4-month old puppy unfortunately broke her leg in the scuffle. We were so happy that she had her rabies shot and could go to play with other dogs her size. This was her first day! I was told "we don't know what happened, but all the sudden she was limping ". I asked to see the video and saw the situation - she was trampled by other dogs when the trash truck was emptying dumpsters on the opposite side of their play yard fence. Why they didn't tell me that from the beginning is beyond me, but we will never go back there again. Negligence. The manager said "We are going to ask the trash company to come at another time so the dogs don't get frightened by the trucks ". It doesn't work like that- Dogtopia Dulles needs to be more aware of the trash pick up schedule and not over crowd the small space. So disappointed. read more

This is our go-to daycare spot for our little one, Luna, and every time we take her there, her head perks up from the back seat of the car knowing her day will be filled with play time! Signing up was easy and we took advantage of their buy one day get two free deal when we did! Only small downside when signing up is the $15 evaluation fee since other places don't charge for one but it wasn't that big of a deal given the deal we got. The staff members are very helpful and friendly when dropping off and picking up our pup. They know her by name! (Probably because she's one of the dogs that run around and get into trouble all the time ). Downloading their app and setting up your dog's daycare appointment on it is very intuitive (or you can just call in especially if you have special requests). The webcam access that they provide on their app and website is very nice since we can check up on our pup throughout the day until we pick her up! There are three different rooms they provide for your dog depending on their size and/or temperament. Currently, Luna goes to the toy box with all the younger pups and small dogs but she's been in the lounge with her bigger sister before and has done fine! She plays with a lot of the other dogs and there are staff members in each room supervising the dogs as well as sanitizing after any accidents. She does get in trouble every so often for playing too rough and would have to be but in a crate for timeout which is good since she is still learning how to be more gentle. I also enjoy the different events they have for the dogs during holidays, special occasions and just because! Luna had her first pool experience there! We have also did the in house puppy social and dog training class with Dara from The Enlightened Dog which was a learning and an enjoyable experience. Also the price was very reasonable! I would definitely recommend Dogtopia to anyone around the area especially if your dog is fine with being in a crate during timeouts, nap/lunch time! read more

We live about 40 minutes away from this Dogtopia location, but due to its somewhat close proximity to Dulles, we wanted to bring our Goldendoodle Winnie in for an evaluation in the event we wanted to use their boarding services prior to our future travels. We filled out the evaluation form (located online) and emailed it prior to visiting. I appreciated the confirmation call the day before our evaluation was scheduled. At the evaluation, we provided an immunization record and she was taken to the back to play with different groups of dogs (small and large). Unlike the Springfield Dogtopia location, we weren't provided with a tour of the facility and an in-person breakdown of the packages and service offerings, but we were given a folder with the information. They also do not provide grooming and/or bath services. We've brought Winnie once for Saturday playtime since we were in the area, but we had a great experience with the Springfield location (review to come!) so we'll probably only utilize this location for daycare whenever we're in the area and go with boarding at Springfield. read more

I wanted to love this place but I couldn't. I love that they have cameras but it also meant me watching what was going on. I felt as though there were way too many dogs at once and sometimes 1 attendant. My 1 yr old dog is pretty shy and she's also tiny so I wanted to make sure she was with smaller dogs and that wasn't the case. There were bigger dogs in her toy room. I guess they said that it does by age? So even if a big dog is a puppy they play here. She doesn't do too well with big dogs because she ends up getting bullied :(. I would recommend this place to people with larger dogs. read more

So let me start off by saying that most if not all of the dogs here are amazing and many of the canine coaches are great too. The interview and my first week were pretty good and I enjoyed learning from Dani and others as they were calm and friendly. There are some really good techniques and concepts for dealing with dogs and when implemented were great, but that's where some shortfalls became evident. By the second week I was still training but I wasn't with the people who had trained me before and literally every canine coach had a different approach. How to break up a dog fight, how to mop, how to clean, how to deal with dogs, there was no consistency. When I decided to leave, I was told I seemed scared, and that was true. But I wasn't scared of the dogs, I was scared because I had people yelling at me, being aggressive, giving me orders on how things had to be done or else. I'm actually sad to say this, as like I said, the dogs and some of the workers there are amazing, but I had coworkers who referred to management very negatively, and several senior managers did yell and were not calm or patient with me or the dogs. Since I have left, I have heard more stories like this, dogs being hurt, managers yelling and screaming at employees, and numerous other troubling facts. The only good thing that has come out of my experience there is that I learned what to look for and be aware of when having an interview or considering a place to work. Most of my former co-workers do love dogs, but I would strongly recommend not working or bringing your dog to this particular location. read more

We boarded our two dogs here for 6 days while we were gone for Christmas. It was our first time at this location, but always had a great experience at the Tyson's location, so we thought we would try out Dulles as it is closer to our house. Big mistake! Our 3 year old dog came home with large bloody swollen sores on his nose (top and sides). The staff didn't even say anything on the phone when I called to pay or to my father in law who picked my dogs up for me. He didn't realize until he got home and was in the light. The front staff is friendly, but whoever is in the rooms watching the dogs obviously don't pay attention to them. We took our dogs here so they could be taken care of while we were gone, but apparently they would have been better off if we had left them home alone. I was impressed with the intro to Dogtopia. I brought my dog to an intro visit. The person was totally informative about how Parker adapted to the environment. So, we booked Parker to be there for about a week. We picked our buddy up today (8/14/21). First, we have boarded Parker before and we ALWAYS get a "report card" on how the week went. We received NOTHING from the staff Dogtopia, other than the bill and 3/4 of the food we provided to them for the 7-8 days he was there. We were hoping for some feedback on how the week went for ur Parker. Then we bring our buddy home. He is a COMPLETELY different dog. I believe he has kennel cough, but no one from this organization even spoke to me when I picked him up, so I'm not sure. I will NEVER go back to Dogtopia. The way they handled me and my dog at he beginning, sucked me in. The way they actually treated my dog and the lack of communication about how Parker did for the week was abysmal. I called to get info on boarding my dogs. I love the rating, location and reviews. The reason I chose this boarding facility is because it is the closest to our home. However there is a $15 fee to have them evaluate your dogs, I was like what are you serious. I believe that is completely unnecessary. The other boarding companies that I called don't required a evaluate fee. I would rather pay $15 each for a nail trim or some other thing that would benefit my dogs. I was really excited to take my dog here as friends who go to other Dogtopia locations love it. I'm very disappointed to say we did not have a good experience. We dropped my dog off at 8:30 for her first day and I watched the webcams for a while, only to find out my dog was crated after only playing for about an hour. She was off camera for about 40 min (she definitely wasn't on a walk as it was raining). Meanwhile, I watched as one of the canine coaches yelled at numerous dogs just for playing and put several of them in crates for no reason (and putting them in there rather aggressively), leaving them for long periods of time. Then my dog came back into the room, and excitedly tried to play with another dog who was reciprocating. The canine coach immediately grabbed her and put her in a crate. I figured oh, well maybe she just needs a little break, but after 20 minutes of her still being in there and watching her, I was very upset. I immediately called and asked what was going on and they said it was an "oversight" on their part and that she shouldn't have been in there that long. At that point I'd had enough and picked her up. They were nice enough to not charge me but it worries me that as a new customer, my dog was treated this poorly. I'm not paying for my dog to be crated all day (she was crated an hour of the 2.5 hours she was there), and it's unfortunate that we will not be returning. I also didn't realize their meet and greet fee was $15, which seems a bit ridiculous for a 15 min evaluation. Many competitors in the area give you a free first day of daycare, so just not worth it to me. read more

We just got back from our first day at daycare and I could not be more happy! From the second we stopped in for our Meet & Greet, my pup was treated with so much love, care & respect. They very obviously have well trained and informed staff who keep my puppy super happy. She is 5 months old currently and I got to watch her intermittently on the cameras throughout the day and she had a BLAST! One thing that makes me really excited is how clean this establishment is, I mean a seriously spotless lobby, and they seem to clean constantly throughout the day. They have so many fun activities for the dogs running throughout the month, and oddly enough my pup came back smelling really good? An added bonus, in my opinion. I used to be a huge fan of this place. I hate boarding our dog, Wilson. We rescued him from the New York Avenue Animal Shelter so, the last thing I want to do is put him in a kennel. Dogtopia seemed to be a natural solution for when we needed to go on long trips. After returning home this time, my mom went to pick up Wilson for us. She arrived at 10:04 am and was charged an extra $20 for being 4 minutes late. My mom was really upset, not so much about the charge, but by how she was treated. That's fine, I understand policies. Personally, I would have made an exception since it was raining and my mom got lost--that's just good customer service. Had she done that, I would have been writing a much different review today. I decided to call for clarification, you know to see if my mom was overreacting or being dramatic. Unfortunately, she was not and I soon realized why she was so upset. I explained the situation and asked if there was a way to waive the fee. The supervisor said, "She should have left sooner if she had never been here," I sighed. Even though it was none of her business, I explained that she had to drop off my daughter at school, therefore could not have left any sooner. I told her that given the way she was treating me, I wasn't sure if we would ever bring our dog here again. "That's fine. Whatever," she replied. "So, you don't care?" I asked. "Nope. I can't change our policy." After I expressed how baffled I was, Michelle just hung up on me. If they can't even treat people with respect and kindness, how are they treating our animals? I have been coming to Dogtopia with my lab Stanley for 2 years. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and I have not seen some of the other issues that other reviewers have mentioned in regards to staff interaction. My dog loves to go, and given that he always pulls forward, I feel that the relationship he has developed to the place staff, and other dogs is worth it... at least when it come to say visits. In august we boarded him, and he came back with a Stomach bug via diarrhea. We boarded him again for thanksgiving last week and he came back with kennel cough. As a result, we are now having to get antibiotics with the vet. I know this is par for the course when it comes to dog boarding though. It's something to be expected and yet it does seem like illness are becoming more regular. I'm currently looking into other options for boarding, but I will continue taking him for doggie day care once a week. read more

Long post, but important info ... Incompetent and horrible! We boarded our dog for a week while on vacation. I noticed that my dog was always out of view of the camera and when I called to inquire multiple times, I was assured she was fine, exhausted from playing and napping. Problem is it was late morning and a 1.5 year old puppy shouldn't "nap" all day. My husband finally asked that they bring her into camera view. She made a lap around the room, didn't interact with any dogs and went right back out of view. The day before we picked her up we received an email that she was pretty lethargic and not eating her food. When we picked her up she looked AWFUL. Her ears were matted, eyes droopy and she had no energy. She's a 1.5 year old Doodle!! We immediately took her to the vet. She had a bacterial infection, had lost five pounds and 2.5 days later still is not eating. We are very worried. Their assessment of her behavior was inaccurate, unreliable. and unreasonable. She didn't lose the 5 pounds in one day so obviously she had not been eating for a while. I get upset and angry everyone I look at their "report card" that states she was "fun and energetic" during her stay. Incompetence at its worst and my dog is the one suffering. We have two dogs: Winston, a 5yo schnauzer mix and Waldo, an 11 month old pit bull mix. Winston is a veteran of Day Care and he hasn't cared much for it in the past. He's been to Old Towne Pet Resort for 3 years when we lived in Kingstowne and he'd always just sit right by the door. However, when we dropped off Winston at Dogtopia for the first time, I was surprised to see just how well he adjusted. He was in the toy box room with some of the more mellow doggies and he seemed to be having a blast! Sniffing, romping, rolling, chasing... things he usually doesn't do. Waldo, on the other hand, loves it there. The first two weeks, he was a bit weary. It was his first time without us near him while he was with larger dogs. He's been to dog parks but he always comes and runs back to us when there's just too much excitement so this was new for him. Once he flourished, he really flourished! I love that the first few visits they gave them both report cards (which were SUPER cute!!). I don't think they do it after your first few visits though. We also have them give Waldo a bath every 2-3 weeks which seems to be a much easier process than trying to do it at home. They do a fantastic job, he always smells so good and is always so clean! I'm dropping off Winston this week for a grooming appointment so hopefully they do a fantastic job at that as well! We love Dogtopia for both doggie daycare and overnight boarding. We adopted our puppy, who is now 77 lbs, one year ago from the FCAS (Fairfax County Animal Shelter). In that time, we have gone out of town several times, and when we like to give our family/ friends a break in dog-sitting, Dogtopia is a great option. The staff are always in the rooms watching the dogs and cleaning up after them. It is pretty much open play, with nap times and feeding times. Our dog, Rylie, loves it there and always has a great "report card." She comes home very exhausted and they tell us this is normal as the dogs are both super exhausted from playing with a ton of new dogs in a new environment all day, but also very happy to see their owners again. So, the couple days following her stay at Dogtopia, Rylie is very sleepy and we don't have her run around too much. I think the price is fair, and pretty much on the same level as other dog boarding places, given the services they provide. I do think it can get a bit pricey when you're considering boarding your dog for 5 days, for example. 5 days of daycare + 4 or 5 night of overnight boarding can total about $200- $300. I would recommend Dogtopia to dog owners looking for a daytime play area for dogs as well as overnight boarding for going out of town or if you just need a break! read more

They have a webcam service too (bad quality) but I looked at it a couple times and saw my dog playing. I boarded my dog Lady several times at Dogtopia of Dulles. This recent weeklong stay also included my other dog, Buster. Both of them seem to really enjoy their stay. First off I will say at Dogtopia, they always seem to want to do whatever is best for the dog. I really am very pleased with the staff, and in particular Art was very nice and friendly. When I took Buster in for his Initial Evaluation (required of course for several important reasons), Buster was scared a bit and Art was great with working with Buster and making sure he would be comfortable. In addition to the great and friendly staff, the facility also looks remarkably clean. Plus the check in and check out process was a breeze. They are diligent about all the necessary shots/rabies, etc. and I am grateful they follow such a strict process. Some places are more laid back on this and again I also think the initial evaluation is a plus. So to me it is so nice that you don't have to worry about any issues with other dogs. I also love being able to watch my dogs on the webcams. One afternoon I couldn't find Buster, and after calling they told me he was tired and taking a nap from all his playtime earlier in the day! On the webcam I could see Lady playing on the jungle gym/slide thing they had, and I can tell you she did enjoy herself. After picking up both Buster and Lady, they came home tired from playing and interacting with the dogs all week, and two days later they are still recovering! If I had to nitpick one thing, it would be the new policy of charging now for the mandatory baths (needed after 4 days of stay). I made the reservation prior to the announcement they would begin charging for this service, so I didn't expect to be charged but I was. However, everything else was great and I would highly recommend Dogtopia at Dulles! read more

Before going here, we visited another dog daycare facility. It was a nice spring day with temps in the low 70's. The first place we went to had an odor of urine that almost knocked you over when you walked through the door. I can't imagine how it gets in the heat of summer. When we walked into Dogtopia of Dulles, it smelled very nice, so nice, you had to wonder if they actually had dogs there. We asked if we could see one of the rooms in the back, and they allowed us to see one that they weren't using at the time. They apologized for how messy it was, but honestly I couldn't see what was messy about it. Even that room, in it's "messy" state, smelled nice. My dog has been happily going here for about a year now. He's always excited to go, and worn out when he gets back. The staff are all great, learned who he was quickly, and seem to take good care of him. They even honored the odd request I had a time or two. read more

We've been taking our Bernese Mountain Dog, Britta, here for almost a year, once a week for daycare. At first, we were nervous to take our dog here (or to any daycare). We worried it'd be too much activity for her, we'd heard bad stories about dogs getting bitten or attacked, I wondered if it would affect her housebreaking (they don't take the dogs outside here - or in most of the daycares in our area.) She LOVES it. She pulls me to the door, leaps around in the lobby, and leaves us without a second glance - and comes home happy and worn out (and a little smelly!) It has really helped her socialization - she gets along with other dogs and has really learned how to act with other dogs and packs of dogs. We've never had an issue with her going to the bathroom in the house, so not going outside doesn't seem to affect her at all. The dogs are put into individual crates for two hours in the middle of the day, which I'm grateful for. My dog would never stop playing but I know she needs the rest! Some daycares don't have this enforced break time, but I like that Dogtopia does this. And the staff there are really friendly and seem to love dogs. They know Britta by name, greet her when we walk through the door, talk about changes they've seen in her. They have webcams so you can watch the dogs. They're not the best quality, but it's good enough to see that your dog is happy and well cared for. The staff walk around all day and interact with the dogs - nice to know that people are with them and keeping an eye on them. They also have events - birthday parties once a month for all the dogs who have a birthday, as well as seasonal events. Our Murphy loves Dogtopia! We just picked her up from an extended stay and I am thoroughly impressed with how well they took care of her. Murphy's got a sensitive stomach, and I accidentally didn't provide enough food. Even though they provide food, Alex called to ask me what kind of food Murphy ate, then she actually went out and got her a bag!!! We've been using Dogtopia of Dulles South for about 3 years now. We have a Bernese Mountain Dog who has separation issues-- yet when we take him to Dogtopia--whether it be for a spa treatment, a few hours of doggie daycare, or an extended stay-- he's always happy and tail-wagging to be there. The staff is extremely friendly; the recognize Murphy as soon as we enter and greet him by name. The location is spotless and odor-free which is always a plus. When we board him for a week or so, the ability to view him on the web camera is a great perk-- it's reassuring to see him happy, running, and playing with others and not sulking in a cage. I am updating this review and I have since switched to a different daycare center. Both of my dogs have had extensive training. The larger dog plays very hard with dogs and the smaller dog is a service dog and so he goes with me everywhere. In the beginning I was very happy with Dogtopia. However this location seems to have become overcrowded and the staff cannot handle the number of dogs in a small area. After switching to a new daycare, I spoke to another dog mom who had switched from Dogtopia and said the same thing - they seemed overcrowded and understaffed. The last straw was when I walked in to pick up my dog on a Monday evening. The staff had just left me a voicemail that my dog had been in an altercation with another dog. My dog started the first altercation, and the other dog started a second alteration. The dogs were separated and no one was hurt. I really appreciate that they call and let me know when something happens. When I arrived I spoke to the staff about it and they reiterated that no one was hurt and they just wanted to let me know it had happened. We didn't go to daycare on Tuesday but returned on Wednesday. When I walked in to pick my dog up on Wednesday I was approached by a different staff member telling me my dog had been in an altercation on Monday. I told her I knew about it and had spoken to the staff on Monday. She said that they were notified that day that a staff member had been bitten by my dog during that altercation. First of all, the law in Virginia is that you report a workplace accident or injury immediately, not 2 days after the incident. So the staff has not been properly trained. Second, the issue was addressed on Monday. If your staff didn't properly report the incident, that isn't my issue, that's your issue and should be handled without involving me. And third, how can I be sure, that it was actually my dog that bit the staff member if she didn't even report being bitten for 2 days? Did she really remember that correctly? If it was enough to be reported, why did she wait 2 days? Just seemed very shady to me. I returned the following Monday because I didn't want to leave my dog crated at home for 10 hours. I was told on Monday there were no issues, but I let the staff know it was a moot point because we wouldn't be returning. We went to the daycare across the street which has a huge backyard for the dogs to run and play and several different indoor rooms. The staff there loves my dog and the feeling is mutual. read more

Horrible location! Management & staff are poorly trained on recognizing & understanding K9 behavior. This leads to unwanted situations, over-correction & even correction to the wrong dog. dogs are often given "timeouts" which is not an effective method of correction for animals & just creates further issues. My dog first contracted kennel cough from an infected dog at the facility, then came home with sore spots on his mussel from being allowed to rub excessively on the crate throughout the 2+ hour nap time, and finally was bitten through his lip by another dog during play; all on separate occasions. The bite was where i drew the line. i saw it happen on the webcam and after 30mins he still was not back on camera so i decided to call. They said the injury was "a small puncture that just needed to be kept clean", advisement the staff is not qualified to give and that i, thankfully, ignored. The puncture/tear in his lip was large and he had to be put under for the vet to stitch it. I was given a 10 day regimen of pain killers and antibiotics so he could properly heal. Dogtopia blamed my dog for getting bitten, and then later, even went as far to say maybe he bit himself. smh,...i can't even with this place. Not only is there video but the cuts to the exterior of his mouth would suggest he didn't attack himself. i'm extremely disappointed at manner in which this was handled by the franchise. I'll be sure to confirm other locations aren't under the same management before bringing my dog there. i hope this review can be helpful to others so they may avoid going through this. read more

We love our Dogtopia (Chantilly) and have been going here for years. We always have positive experiences. Staff are so gentle with our elderly dog, Jules. Everyone is pleasant -from answering the phone to the care of Jules. This is the ONLY place we kennel him. Staff have worked with us as he has aged to adjust to his needs with his meals and extra naps. It makes us grateful that Jules enjoys his time at Dogtopia and comfortable that he is well taken care of. read more

If you have a dog who loves social play, this is a great place. We've been using Dogtopia of Dulles for over a year for boarding and occasional day care. We've dropped off and picked up at random times and the rooms are always clean and the dogs are always in a healthy play. Employees go out of their way to get to know each animal and even when we haven't been around for a while, they still remember our dog. When we pull up out front for drop-off, our dog cries and barks and can't wait to get out of the car and inside to play with her friends. She always comes home happy and exhausted...which is just what owners of a Jack Russell mix needs! read more
