It is very difficult to find quality Chinese food so when we tried Happy Kitchen, I had tempered my expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Usually I get hung up on poor quality chicken or meat but had the sesame chicken here and it was very good. Came with a side of lo mein, which was also tasty. Would order from here again. read more

I have frequented Happy Kitchen several times in the past year. Although I don't live in Winthrop, I try to make a point of visiting when I go. Their standout dish is the wonton soup. I have had several, and this is the best in the area. Their service is timely, and they seem genuinely appreciative of their customers. I knocked one star for the chicken and broccoli, as the chicken in that dish has been inexplicably inconsistent. Hope to try that dish again soon. read more

The garlic eggplant was fantastic. My spouse likes the orange tofu at Hong Kong Dragon a tiny bit more. It wasn't enough to be a deal breaker. Happy Kitchen is a take out place with a couple of kind of booths. The staff are really kind and friendly. Go to Happy Kitchen and Hong Kong Dragon! Eat more Chinese-American food. Surprisingly good and very, very affordable. Their orange/sesame/Tso's chicken chunks have more actual white meat chicken in them than any place I've been. Best Kung Pao I've ever had actually. All while being the cheapest Chinese place in the area, at least that I have been to. It's a little hole in the wall and I let that fool me for a while but that was a mistake. read more

We ordered a few dishes for take-out: a tofu dish, a chicken dish, edamame, and udon noodles. The udon noodles were really good, very flavorful with fresh veggies! The edamame was average, nothing special-- if they added a warmed spicy option for edamame, I would definitely try it. Both our main courses (tofu and chicken) were fine; nothing amazing but not bad. The tofu was too soggy/soft and sticky for my taste, so I wouldn't get it again. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that the food may have been better dine-in. Great little local Chinese take out place. Prices are great with lunch specials starting at $5.55 which includes the tax. They also have family dinner specials which look like a great buy. If your interested in dining in you will need to be lucky as there is only one 4 top available. I indulged in the # 4 lunch special which is Chicken or Pork Lo Mein with White or Pork Fried Rice. I choose Chicken and Pork Fried Rice for the low price of $5.25 + tax. The fish was quite large for the price and could actually be shared by two if you add an appetizer. Parking is scarce in the private shared lot but easy enough to get a spot out front on the street. The staff seems polite and friendly and may even be the proprietors. We're in downtown Boston and we've ordered delivery from here a few times -- don't let the Winthrop location fool you, delivery is almost always faster than from somewhere where they have to drive through the city. The food quality is better than the prices indicate -- just keep in mind this is Chinese-American comfort food. It's not healthy, gourmet, or authentic, but it's always been fresh and tasty. There's a running commentary in the reviews about if it is or isn't like Billy Tse's. Listen, Billy Tse's is a Boston tradition, so I'd never say anything bad about his spot, but the way the food here is prepared IS very similar. Unlike Billy Tse's though, an order for two doesn't run us $100. They offer small portions and combination plates, which is impossible to find in Boston, but lets us get lots of different things to try. If you're looking for quick and easy Chinese delivery, this is a great option. read more

I need to balance all of the great reviews I saw about this place and give a more deservedly bad one. One review even mentioned that it was better than Billy Tse's. A person that can say that either knows the owner or does not have taste. This place serves unremarkable Chinese food. The beef and broccoli was bland and under seasoned. (I found myself over chewing because I couldn't swallow) The general gaus chicken reeked of vinegar and was over cooked. Spring rolls were greasy and undercooked. The fried rice was okay, and the lo mein wasn't terrible. I did like the crab rangoon though. I will not be coming back here even if they switched over management in the future. BTW this place isn't even in the same ballpark as Billy Tse's and I should of just ordered there. read more

I used to order weekly and completely stopped. The delivery driver doesn't want to walk up my stairs yet expects a tip. He's often intoxicated as well. Make sure you have the exact change for the tip otherwise he'll claim he has no change to give you and pocket the extra money. What delivery driver doesn't have change?! So I did end up trying this place another 3 times since the last review (I guess there aren't many Uber eats options around). I stuck with the sesame chicken with white or fried rice, or beef and broccoli. The quality really is to the point where I'd rather / might as well be eating McDonald's. Last two times the food made my roommate and I nauseous and gassy, today was definitely worse though and included bonus "MSG headaches" for everyone after their meal. Besides all of that, the taste has been mediocre throughout. Very bland, and largely just sweet, salty, or fried (texture, I know, but you get the idea). If you're shopping around Uber eats: I know it's rough out there, but if you love yourself you'll order elsewhere. read more

Our go-to Chinese food spot in East Boston. We haven't ordered anything from Happy Kitchen that we didn't like. From the soups, to their fried rice and lo mein, they know what they're doing. This time we kept it kinda simple and ordered the hot and sour soup to start off, and an order of the moo shu vegetable. Can't even begin to explain how hard it is to find top notch hot and sour soup. I'm somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to hot and sour so I have to get it everywhere we go. Between the big portion of mushrooms to the amazing tofu, there's nothing that I would change about this soup. They even have the perfect spice to sour ratio in the soup too, which is so hard to find. I'll get it every time. Their moo shu has some great flavor, but this time it was loaded with cabbage which is the main filler of this dish. Usually they give a bunch of egg, mushrooms and carrots in it as well but I can cut them some slack because they're almost always on point. You can't beat a good moo shu and their pancakes that come with it are great, too. Happy Kitchen will make you have a happy tummy for sure. read more

They are so freakin friendly that they put the "happy" in Happy Kitchen! Always greeted with a smile, a little conversation and some laughs and the food is always ready when I arrive. The food is excellent. I haven't had anything that I didnt like yet. I've had the moo goo gai pan a few times and I think it is my new favorite. I don't normally give bad reviews but after reading all the great reviews I am a bit confused. I ordered the General Gau's with crab rangoons and chicken wings. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites. The chicken was SOOOO dry. Both the General Gau's and wings. And the crab rangoons were more like fried wontons with very little crab and cream cheese in them. I was really hoping to love this place and make it my regular spot. Do not let their looks fool you, this is the real deal as good as any fancy restaurant. Happy Kitchen opened a week after I moved to Winthrop a few years ago and what a gem. I either pick up or have delivery at least twice a week and I have yet to find something that is not wonderful. Just like others have said, the service is personal and awesome and delivery is fast with hot food. They are really good at noticing details and my orders are always correct!! Big portions for the price. Quality taste and ingredients. They sent me fried rice instead of Lo Mein but corrected themselves and brought it to me 15 min later. They do however fail my duck sauce test which gives them a loss of a star. Stay away from the chicken pad thai. It came in brown sauce and I couldn't even keep 1 bite down. It was just awful. Spring rolls were not great. Crab rangoon was fine. Overall though, a huge disappointment. Customer service was friendly with pick up. read more

Am I missing something with this place? Never had a good meal here, not a horrible one either just not as great as these reviews. One again had a tasteless meal of pad Thai.. maybe my fault for getting this from a Chinese restruant but eh. Got Peking Raviolis the were ok, I mean he can you need those up there premade and frozen. Prices are a tad high. I usually get Hong Kong and my wife gets Happy kitchen and her dinner is alreadys 3-4 dollars more than mine. We ordered through Uber Eats and we had no problem with delivery but when we got our food , The Beef Lo Min had a odd taste that we couldnt even eat it . It tasted like the oil or pan were old or dirty . The chicken fingers had the same issue , the oil tasted old . I love Happy Kitchen in Winthrop! Quick delivery, very friendly and HELPFUL staff! Maggie is awesome! I just ordered and we always use Happy kitchen when ordering Chinese food. Problem was we lost our menu and we both created plates that didn't exist I've had this happen before at other places when I lived in Everett and the place would have us call back or they would give us other options sayin substituting wasn't allowed! Maggie however told me how to locate the online menu via Yelp and then said she would include a new one with our order and also said no problem we will create your selection of appetizers as plates which was very nice.
