We dined in for the first time last night. There was only one other table seated when we arrived and not many showed up after, but it was a Monday night. We were seated right away. The tables are large and perfect for family style serving. There is a large bar with plenty of TVs for every angle of viewing. The menu is massive with lots of comfort options as well as some creative chef's specials. We ordered entirely too much food, but we'll have leftovers for days! Thank you so much to the staff at Hong Kong Dragon. I had lost an earring on my way into the restaurant and one of the staff helped me look for it - she and I walked outside all the way to the end of the block! I mentioned that the earring was my Mom's and We couldn't find it, but one of the other staff took a picture of the matching earring in case anyone found it. As my husband & I were going to our car, I found my earring in the crack of the sidewalk a few feet away from where the staff member and I stopped looking! We're been impressed with them before but this time the beef and broccoli was mostly broccoli and the dumplings aren't how I see them typically made. We were the only ones in the restaurant so we immediately got sat down. The restaurant itself is nice, with a bar area and dining room. The food. I ordered shrimp chow mein. Tell me why it was all white, white long onions, white noodles, and white cabbage with tiny shrimp. I was so confused. I've never seen this kind of chow mein. It was tasteless and the pork fried rice was horrible. It tasted like it sat out for weeks and they just reheated it with no flavor. Everything had a weird aftertaste. I have been thinking about Hong Kong Dragon since I went there. My husband and I try a new restaurant every month, and we didn't feel like trekking into Boston so we happened to see this place on Yelp and gave it a shot. First of all, it's rare for me to find a Chinese restaurant where you aren't ordering at a counter and staring at pictures of their dishes that are so old and faded, every meal looks exactly the same. So this was a welcomed change! The menu is extensive and chock full of both the staples and chef's specialties. My husband got the beef lo mein (his fave) with a side of bbq spare ribs and fried rice. I got the House Special...which is large shrimp, white chicken, boneless spareribs and beef together with mixed vegetables on a bed of soft noodles. Pretty much everything I love to eat piled onto one plate. It was DELICIOUS! I prefer the dark, brown sauce to the lighter sauce and this didn't disappoint. All of the meat was tender and juicy, and the veggies were still a little crunchy and then everything was perfectly glazed with the brown sauce. The hubs said his plate of carbs was excellent as well. We both were able to stretch them over a couple of meals. So the icing on the cake are their prices. The hubs dinner only cost $12, and my heap of heaven was only $13! I can't even remember the last time we went out for $25. Ok, I'm hungry. Time to go back. read more

We stopped in for lunch as a Plan B/Plan C on July 4th -- Seated right away. Server was friendly explaining/confirming lunch specials were available on the holiday. Food came out pretty quickly. I had the sweet and sour chicken which was very good, my friend had a sesame chicken which she enjoyed--our visiting friend had veggies/boiled chicken but I think it was more of a purposely bland choice on her part which she then regretted. Their Peking ravioli is delicious. It actually tastes healthy. The soy sauce that it comes for you to dip with has a twist--- a lil spicy! This is good for those who can take a little spicy, if you can't... You're in trouble. Hong Kong Dragon is a great Polynesian style restaurant. They have all the usual suspects; fried rice, lo mein, crab rangoon, Peking ravioli, beef and broccoli, egg and spring rolls, chicken wings/fingers, pork strips, fried shrimp, egg foo young, lobster sauce, shumai, crab rangoons and chicken/beef teriyaki. They offer 2 pupu platters and special kid menus (which include french fries.) They have a whole page of chefs specials, of which we always order Shangai Pan Fried Noodles, which is basically a house lo mein. In addition, they offer a special gluten free menu, along with a Dieters Delight menu; items served with white rice with optional seasonings. They do offer combo plates for eat in or take out. On top of all of that, Hong Kong Dragon has a special sampling menu (I don't recall the name they use), but akin to a tapas menu, so you can try different items. On this, they offer seaweed salad, garden salad, I believe they have Chinese nachos and pizza as well. Service is always top notch. We have been there when it's completely dead and more recently when there was a big party. Same attention to detail. Always warm, always friendly, always looking to please and answer questions. It is always immaculate, service area and restrooms. They have a nice lounge area; I recommend ordering the pear and the raspberry chocolate martinis for a treat. Always returning! read more

Very disappointed. Food is great, but I don't appreciate the rudeness with the server tossing our plates and talking back. Chinese food is hard to come by these days so I searched for some good General Gau's Chicken and found this place. They wouldn't deliver to us, even though we're less than .5 miles outside of their delivery radius and were ordering more than $30 of food, so we had to use a food delivery service which ended up taking a while. When it did arrive it was pretty good, considering it wasn't super hot and fresh. The general Gau's chicken was good quality chicken and the sauce was really good, not too sweet and just enough spice. It came with some broccoli too, which is always good. We also ordered the moo shu vegetable and it came PACKED to the top of the container. Such a good deal and it was super saucy. Sometimes you order it and it comes pretty dry but I could eat it by itself, it was that good. The pancakes that are served with it were nice and fresh. They didn't stick together at all which was a relief. But the star of the show was the hot and sour soup. Such good flavor and full of mushrooms and tofu, which is always my favorite part. My girl and I went to the HKD after eating our way through almost all of Winthrop's restaurants. We heard that the place had been totally redecorated acquired a liquor license. We stopped by early on Sunday afternoon 3/11/12 and were almost the only people in the place the duration of our meal. The remodel was a complete success; the place used to be a hole in the wall with a couple of booths. Now it's got multiple seating areas, quiet ambience, and art nouveau sinks in the immaculate restrooms. The place would have the total retreat vibe, if not for the flatscreen TVs scattered about. The food was great, and mostly bargain portions for the price. Ten huge crab rangoon (imitation crab) for about $6. Sharable portions of General Gau's and spicy vegetable stir fry for about $11. Both entrees were a notch above most places. The GGC was sweet and spicy, with big pieces of chicken that hadn't been overbreaded. The veggie stir fry had lots of different veggies in a thick, peppery savory sauce. The food was so good that when we got back into the car after another short stop, we realized the packaged leftovers STILL smelled amazing. The sole quirk that stole the last star? Pork fried rice was $7. I know it's more expensive to prepare than plain white rice, but that felt like a gouge. I would have settled for a smaller portion for $4-5, but it was the only misstep in the whole experience. So this is a restaurant that used to be average bordering on crummy, that has really improved. It's totally worth a try if you haven't been there in ages. read more

After looking for a good Chinese place in our area and heard great reviews about this place I decided to take a drive and check it out. It is located right in Winthrop Center next to La Siesta Restaurant. Small place with 4-5 tables to sit down inside and eat, with a tv that plays the news. The lady at the counter (which I will assume is the owner) is very nice and polite and gives good explanations as to what some of the things are on the menu. I ordered a small pupu platter, general gau's chicken dish (I asked for it to be a little bit spicy and that was definitely achieved!) and a today special's dish of pork fried rice and peking ravioli's. I waited probably about 10-15 minutes or so for my order which is a decent amount of time. Got home and started to eat! The food is pretty decent Chinese food, nothing to wow me over though. I am impressed that I did request for the general gau's chicken to be a little bit spicy and they got that exactly right and were happy to honor my request! I found the ravioli's, chicken fingers and fried shrimp to be to doughy for me. The crab rangoons seem not so fresh but I did enjoy that the boneless pareribs were the wider/thicker cuts rather than the skinny ones you usually get at places. Overall a good spot but I wouldnt drive over there again for it. But Winthrop residents do have a good place to get Chinese! read more
