A moment after ordering, they phone to say they had no string beans, so we subbed in mushrooms. The mushrooms were not any sort of Asian mushroom, and there was no variety. These were regular, white, button mushrooms. We found them essentially uncooked. The Ma Po Tofu was, indeed, not Ma Po Tofu, although it shared some ingredients with it. Instead of silken tofu, this was extra firm. Typically, there is ground pork in it. While I didn't see any, I suppose there could have been a teaspoon of it, in there somewhere. The peppers were not correct either. The dish is famous for the use of Sichuan peppercorns (which are actually dried berries, not peppercorns). This gives the dish its signature "Ma La". Ma La is the balance between heat and numbing. There was fair heat, but no numbing at all. So, basically, it was extra firm tofu in brown sauce.
