Wow..what a hole. Wife and I had good expectations but they were quickly shattered. Our first warning should have been that it was overrun with weeds. When we went in they sat us at a table and my wife lifted her arm and it was caked with old nasty hash browns and ketchup. Yes, they cleaned their tables that well. So they moved us to a new table and I ended up placing my arm in a pool of syrup. No idea about the food. The waitress was nice enough but we left without ordering. If the dining room is this filthy, how dirty is the kitchen? If management doesn't care about cleanliness, I have to question their food sanitation. read more

My first time eating ere and boy was I shocked by the portion sizes. The food was good quality and cooked well....my draw back was the fact that the wait staff didn't seem to care or even acknowledge you if you needed anything. I'm not picky I just like my Ice tea filled once while eating and do not believe I should have to wave my arm around in the air to get some attention. Last time. The HR was a favorite for our monthly group of three until yesterday. It's obvious the folks that were in charge are no more or the cook is on hiatus. No waiting at 9 am Sunday. Good food, pleasant wait staff, and big portions. I had bacon and eggs; my companion ham and eggs (and she had to take some ham home). We have been coming to the Happy Rooster since they opened years ago. Over all this period of time, there have been some changes in management and staff, but we always have very good food, usually great service, and a homey atmosphere. When we have friends visit, a breakfast here is on the agenda. In the last year, we have started bringing our young grandsons when they come and stay with us. It's become a breakfast tradition and they love it. The last time the boys were here, we couldn't go out to eat because of the Covid 19. We are very sad to see businesses having to close and are hopeful that The Happy Rooster will be able to open again before too long. I see reviews here that are completely positive and the reviewers give just 3 stars, I'm not sure how that computes. Then, of course, complainers will always complain. We love the Happy Rooster and are looking forward to eating at our favorite table again. read more

Worst service we have ever had here. Our server was Janelle's and she did everything possible to avoid us. She would not even make eye contact. Another server was so embarrassed she at least got our drink order. I am stumped. I cannot figure out why she was treating us that way . read more

So i just ate here. I had the fruit platter with wheat toast and hot tea. My fruit was great perfectly ripe and couldnt finish it. My fiance had an egg, bacon, and toast. Unfortunately they burnt his bacon or otherwise his meal would have been great. The waitress wasnt great but not awful either. They were a little slow with our orders. I do love me some Happy Rooster! Positive- great value. You can order the Farmer's Feast for $8.00 and you get as follows: 2 eggs, 2 bacons, 2 sausage, choice of hash browns, choice of toast, and pancakes. Yep. That's a big ass meal! I always order it and then just take the pancakes home for later. Also, the bacon and sausage are &)$48:)-@ tasty! The bacon is thick and smoky and the sausage links are big and flavorful. Plus, you can ask for stuff in your pancakes like blueberries or pecans. The place is always packed on the weekend and you don't leave hungry. We usually call ahead to be seated, and we request our favorite southern belle Caroline's section. As long as you don't mind some good ol southern charm and being called baby, you'll love her too! If you end up with any of the other girls, the all hustle too. Negative- no windows. A lot of people tend to feel like its closed in or claustrophobic. It doesn't bother me but I've heard it more than once. It can get a little hot/humid inside and no one likes that, but there have also been times when its perfectly comfortable. Also, the building is old and the parking lot is weedy and crappy so it does have a dive appearance to it, but as long as the food remains tasty I'll keep coming! read more

wow. after reading thru all these reviews, you can see how mixed they are. from bacon NOT crispy to Bacon TO crispy. I think it depends on when you go for service? My wife and I are new to Tucson, and have tired a variety of places for breakfast. (kinda semi picky on our morning cup of coffee ) and we like their coffee there nothing ruins my breakfast more than a crappy cup of coffee I can't drink. We enjoy the food, we have noticed on occasion the service was spotty, on getting to your table. However the wife and I have found sitting at the counter in restaurants, seems to get us much faster service all around. and on occasion a chance to chat with the waitress, who are very sweet I think! read more

Food Never Arrived. My cycling group comes here for breakfast whenever we do a ride to the SE of Tucson. Last Sunday we came in and got seated in the "Miner" room. The waitperson got us coffee and took orders very promptly.... but the food never came. After about 30 mins, the wait person said it would be just 5-10 minutes more. Meanwhile, other customers are arriving and getting served. After another 30 minute wait, we got up to leave but the waitperson said the food was being "plated" so we all sat back down. Ten minutes later, the waitperson reappeared empty-handed and announced that only some of our group's meals were ready to serve. She said it was okay if we wanted to leave without paying. So, we left hungry. Won't be returning. I understand than business can get busy and slow.... but for the waitperson to keep telling us the food was just about ready is unconscionably poor service. read more

1st visit. Place was pretty full, but we won't be back. Eggs over cooked, home fries over spiced, coffee so-so. Three wait staff including our waitress were intermittently eating their breakfast in the dining area while serving or bussing. Picked the wrong table because the bussing station directly overlooked our table. Weird to have two guys standing above you while they mixed eating with getting silverware ready for empty table. Just got the feel that management is too hands off or is in over their heads because too many things aren't working right here. read more

I went there with my 2 daughters(aged 11 and 18) at 3:30 PM on a Friday in summer. There was only one other customer and one waitress. The waitress was very attentive The Drinks were served in large, wide rimmed plastic cups and my iced tea with real lemon wedges, the tea was very good.(although they did serve RC Cola to my daughter, no pepsi-no coke) My other daughter had lemonade which she said was good. I wanted something light and ordered the kids grilled cheese, substituting soup instead of fries. My youngest daughter had the barbecue beef sandwich, choosing cole slaw as side. My adult daughter ordered the Country Fried steak with mashed potatoes and country gravy, choosing potato salad as side. The grilled cheese was served on Texas toast by my request and contained 2 types of american style cheese, it was attractive and delicious. The cup of soup was very home made tasting chicken tortilla and required no additional seasoning, it was very good. The Country Fried steak was incredibly good and the mashed potatoes had chunky, homemade texture and tasted great. the gravy was delicious and combined the choice was spot on. The BBQ beef was very sweet and the bun overly hard, presenting the one negative of the visit. After the meal we were tempted by the Large Ice Cream shake, served in a tall glass with the metal mixer cup containing overflow, but opted instead for the chocolate moose pie with graham crust and an attractive chocolate drizzle. It was Fantastic. We ordered the pie for everyone after tasting the first and were not disappointed. there were large animal murals with a lot of personality and this former DMV building still has an open feel. The prices were good with bargains to be found and the food was a pleasant surprise. They honor Military discounts and veteran discounts. I don't recommend lightly, but one would do well to give the Happy Rooster a visit. read more

I've lived in Tucson for almost 20 years and until recently had never been to the Happy Rooster Café. My parents were visiting me from Yuma a couple of weeks ago and my mom was hunting through the Entertainment Book and found a coupon for the Happy Rooster Café. She asked me if it was good... A bit sheepishly, I replied I had never even heard of it. So I did some research (thank you Yelp) and we decided to give it a try. Oh and I am so glad we did!! The food was so, so good and both of my parents remarked over and over again how it was the best breakfast they had ever had in a restaurant (on a side note, I've been to Yuma many times and it is a bit challenging to find a really good downhome breakfast)! We went at about 2:30 in the afternoon on a Friday and there was hardly anyone there, which gave us more of a chance to chat with the waitress, who was so friendly (I want to say her name was Stephanie but I'm not 100% sure). All three of us enjoyed the food, especially the potatoes. So tasty! Before we left, my mom just had to buy a "Happy Rooster Café" shirt. We then went back the morning my parents were leaving (it was a Sunday). It was packed, but the food was just as good as was the service despite how busy it was. Our waitress we had had a few days back was there again and remembered us, which made us all feel a wee bit special! My mom and I had the corned beef hash and it was very, very, VERY good, and those potatoes (I believe they are called "home fries") were once again perfection. They are done up so good and are perfectly seasoned!! I will definitely be back - can't wait to try some of their dinner items! read more

My family and I go out to breakfast/lunch 2-4 times a week. We have several places that we frequent and the Happy Rooster is one of them. Recently the owner has decided to start making fresh cut fries which, if done right wouldn't be a terrible thing. However, these new thick cut fries are always undercooked and extremely greasy. Fries of this size will be difficult to deep fry and get the crisp outer coating that we pretty much all like. I know the summer months are at hand and with that many restaurants like the Rooster get decreased business so owners look at ways to cut costs but if you're going to do that with fries you either need to go with a thinner cut fry or start double frying them. Everything else about the Happy Rooster has always been good. Great staff, fast and attentive service, quality food that arrives in a timely fashion. I'm going to rate the Happy Rooster at 3 stars instead of 5 because I feel French fries need to be done right at a place that's only open for breakfast and lunch. If the owner reads this though. I frequent the HRC quite often. Why? Simply put, I love the food. My favorite dish has to be the double bacon cheeseburger with fries. The burger is as large as your head and tastes like no other burger in town. I've also had Huevos Rancheros, the almighty Farmers Feast breakfast, and other dishes. The help is friendly and try to get the food out as fast as possible. The owner is a really nice gentleman and runs the front efficiently. I do really enjoy going to this restaurant and I find that it's better than Jethros Cafe simply because the food is better and it can seat more than 10 people, unlike Jethros. I grew up in that area so it's hard to not imagine the Rooster not being a Circle K (I'm dating myself) or the DMV. This is one of my favorite restaurants that has typical American fare and reasonable prices. Oh yeah, the are really busy on the weekends, so go either on a weekday or before after noon on weekends because they close at 2pm, I think. read more
