I've wanted to try this for a while now and finally got around to it today. This is a very cute restaurant with homey appeal. Think Cracker Barrel without the crowds and interminable wait. Lots of bear kitsch which is sort of fun and a little gift shop area. The staff were friendly and attentive making out meal enjoyable. The food was great. We had the salmon with mashed potatoes and an order of fries (huge portion) and corn muffins. All were superb and freshly prepared. For dessert we had banana cream pie and coconut cream pie. I expected a small slice of pie but we received a lovely mini pie for each! All around nice experience and since it's near my office I will be adding it to my lunch rotation. read more

It's reasonably priced. I went for the all you can eat fish fry. It's pollack in a crispy breading, but the breading is pretty tasteless and seems to be the largest portion of the dish. I prefer a thinner batter so the fish can be the star. The coleslaw was not seasoned or creamy. The fries were good. The hush puppies were dense. My guest had the roast beef and it was like you would get at home. The cornbread was dry but had a good flavor. The clam chowder was good. The plus was it was all reasonably priced and the service was fantastic. I may come back for breakfast some day. read more

Honestly this place needs a redo, this place has been open since 2017, and it is starting to show. It needs a desperate facelift, paint job and deep deep cleaning. The first table the man took us too was covered in Fly's not only did he not sit us there but he had to relocate the family that was sitting at the next table, fly's is not a good sign, something isn't being cleaned properly! 2. The waiter was great, very busy, came over took our order and got our drinks. She is part of the reason you're getting a 2 star. She was lovely. 3. As the food came I was enjoying my fish, trying everything on the plate, I took my first bite of the Cole slaw, very very bland, no flavor at all, but there was a surprise in it, a plastic Red Bag Tie from bread in the coleslaw. The waiter was called over and I showed it to her, she apologized and went out to grab another dish of coleslaw, came back with 2 - $5 Blackbear coupons. Not a good start 4. Everything was old and cold - Fries were horrible, hush puppies had died two days ago and were served to us, and everything was bland zero salt or flavoring to anything. 5. The fish is why your getting another star, as it was good fish, it came out crispy and was quite tasty needed alittle more flavor in the breading but was good. It just took forever to get it out to us, and that seemed to be the case for anyone ordering fish. Overall, the details are being overlooked, and someone needs to take the time to go back and start review what you are doing here, start off with a whole deep clean of that place, carpets, walls everything! This was our first return in exactly 4 years. We wanted to try their fish and chips which has been our crusade since returning to Tucson. As before the place was busy even though it was later in the evening. The ambiance was about typical for a diner. We ordered both the cod and the all-you-can eat haddock dinners. We asked for cocktail sauce and Naomi, the waitress offered to make us some. She did a great job on that. As to the fish, we tasted each others order and agreed that the slightly cheaper (20 cents or so) AYCE haddock was the better of the two. The batter on the cod was boring and had less taste than the batter on the haddock which was a thinner cut fish. The portion of fries was generous, the cole slaw simple (good) and the hush puppy just that. So far this has been the most reasonably priced F&C in Tucson. We might return for the AYCE haddock even though I only had one small piece extra. The wife brought home a portion of her cod. We debated on three or four stars this time. read more

Originally from "back east" we are very comfortable with classic diners. This place is pretty close to typical tri-state area diners. The menu isn't quite as extensive, but they've got a great variety of choices and it's easy to find something appealing to your palate. The food has been consistently quite tasty and the servings are abundant. The staff are friendly, pleasant, accommodating and attentive, checking in with our table several times as we enjoyed our meal. We've been to the Black Bear Diner several times now. I have been to Black Bear Diner only twice before both times for lunch/dinner and I wasn't really a fan. Everyone kept saying it's better for Breakfast so I finally gave it a try. I got their pancakes with scrambled eggs and the spicy sausage. I enjoyed the sausage and thought the spice level was just right. The eggs and the pancakes were just alright. Hubby and I went on Sun., 18 Jan 2026. We were quickly seated by Jayson, waitress Karen gave us a pleasant smile and warm greeting. The hardworking gentelman hustling to sweep floors and clear tables kept the place immaculate. You get plenty of appetizing plates of food, leaving us full as a tick! The high volume of patrons truly warrants replacement of seating. It detracts from the ambiance to sit upon or scoot across worn upholstery. A bit pricey for orange juice, no choice to order small, automatically got a large which was $5.99 x2 = $11.98 all I can say is, WOW! Overall, we walked out satisfied. Total with tax, $45.06, plus $8 cash tip given directly to server. Breakfast for two $53.06! Certainly my first to pay $41.46 w/o tax for breakfast. Next time we will have ice water with our food. Food was just ok. Server not very attentive. I ordered the BLT sandwich with onion rings, by the way, it only came with 5 onion rings! Waiter said because it was a "lighter sandwhich" what da heck?!? I asked if they could bring more onion rings, the server who brought out the food said sure no problem. It took so long. I was finished my meal before they even brought more onion rings out. I told them to take it back because I was done by the time they brought it back. And my friends ordered the big chicken fried steak another ordered the bread pudding French toast and the other ordered their new chicken Caesar sandwich. They all said their food was just ok also. We enjoy coming here for breakfast. Today they weren't very busy, so we were seated immediately. Our server came over right away and took our beverage order. I got the chicken fried steak breakfast, with a house salad for the side. The meat had a yummy crunchy coating and the steak was tender. Eggs cooked to my liking. The house salad was nothing special, just bagged lettuce, two cherry tomatoes, and two cucumber slices, but the ranch dressing was delicious. My husband enjoyed his big grizzly breakfast with lots of protein, hashbrowns, and two large pancakes. The food arrived in a timely manner and was nice and hot. The restaurant was clean and inviting. We've been going to the Black Bear for awhile. The restaurant is always clean and staff are efficient and friendly. Even the new manager is friendly and tries to make sure you not only enjoy the food but that you will come back again and again because of excellent customer service. It was very crowded when I was there and I was lucky to get a seat at the counter. I Have heard it's not unusual for it to be crowded.So that means you have to be patient. I was able to get parking fairly easily.But I could see that it would be a problem. The bear and cabin decor are cool and more of a mountain theme or a upper Minnesota Theme The original restaurant in the chain is from Mount Shasta in northern california so that makes sense.. As far as I know, they don't accept reservations.They do have a kid's menu.And their portions are quite large and I think they're still reasonable. The service I got at the counter was very good. Like most diners, it has a wide variety of comfort foods.Lots to sandwiches that you would find in the old school diner like a classic club sandwich to Eggs and bacon and breakfast is served all day. I wondered about a chain but I have to say the food was great! It's not just about the food it's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. The restaurant was clean and they also have a nice seating area.The service was fast and efficient. I enjoyed a tri-tip sliced dip sandwich which I have say reminded me of Santa Maria California. The sweet potato fries were excellent. This was the worst restaurant I've eaten at in a long while. The food was not only bland, but nothing was fresh. I ordered fish and chips and the fish was dry and nothing like the picture and the fries were obviously frozen and just warmed up, not a good texture. We also got a dessert. The berry cobbler and it was so gross! The crust was bland, the berries bland and almost tasted past their date, the ice cream on top was the only good part. It was just really poor quality food. The service was mediocre at best. Our waiter seemed almost snarky at times. The ambiance was a typical hospital cafeteria vibe, older crowd. Days later I'm still pondering how this is so bad and people still eat there. I have been to one Black Bear Diner in Vegas back in 2020 that was really good! Food: institutional style almost like prison food. Service : most inept server we have had. Good was sub par received cold server never refilled sodas. Big guy in the orange shirt was there and wiped his face with the RAG he was using to clean the TABLES, was very sloppily dressed and unkept. Would not allow someone who looked like that to be in public and serve people. Other guy at the register, black shirt young guy, was clueless as to what was going on . only seven customers tonight so that's a total of 14 people two servers out of all of those tables 4 orders were wrong including ours. The food was absolutely horrible and you really need to do something about those seats. You sink all the way almost 2 feet to the floor the first one as you walk into the right it's even worse and JENNIFER , you're the manager, this is a huge reflection on you. You really need to get appropriate and train staff and teach them about Customer Service. This place has turned into an absolute pigsty and we shall never ever return. We know you don't care, but would like to put it out there for others. Goodbye will never see us again. Won't waste my money on a pig diner. By that, I mean our server was great but overall the wait time for our food after ordering was a bit long. It was a Sunday morning and they were busy so that could likely be why. I ordered loaded hashbrowns as a side and they came out plain but this was quickly rectified. The others in my party ordered side salads. They were good size but the veggies were more room temp than cold. I ordered a coconut cream pie for dessert, not realizing it's a a full pie, not a normal size, but definitely a shareable size. This was the worst food service I've experienced for several months. After taking our drink and food order, the server delivered our drinks 20 minutes later. The food came 15 minutes after that. I ordered the fish and chips The fish tasted like it had come out of a Walmart frozen fish box. The French fries were nothing special-in fact, they were limp, and the Cole slaw which arrived five minutes later was half frozen. Yes, it actually had ice crystals in it. I didn't complain because I was a guest of someone and there was nothing they could do to rectify the meal. I don't think I want to try Black Bear again. I have gone in with a large party, about 15-20, and we seem to always get good service. This time I got a BLT with side being a salad. I like lots of mayo so I got the server to bring me extra. I sincerely love this restaurant and decided to give it yet another go, this time with hubby for date night. We both ordered the $10 basket. Hubby was fine with his. I asked for strawberry lemonade with mine and was told it has to be a refillable drink. I showed Karen, the server, on the menu where it says one free refill. She said it was still not eligible to be included. I would have happily paid an upgrade but she appeared adamant. I asked for lightly toasted hash browns and got nearly inedible over cooked ones. Again, I am just so saddened that the customer service here appears to be on a steady decline. Across the board, too. After my last less than flattering review, I was asked to send details of my visit to customer service. I did, and included a previous five star review and have yet to hear anything back. Fortunately there are plenty of options for restaurants in Tucson. Came in right at noon. It was not busy when we came in, but steadily got busier. We receded fairly quickly, and our order was taken by Jauntelle who was excellent. Husband ordered a bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich with fries which came out lukewarm fries with greasy texture. The sandwich was skimpy with only one tomato slice for the whole sandwich. He said the bacon tasted old, the toppings were skimpy. I ordered a California burger, which I ordered to be done medium and it came out well done. The tomatoes on my hamburger were the tops of the tomato which usually gets thrown away in a normal restaurant and they were not good. there were diced onion all over the sandwich which I had to pick off. I had half of my hamburger but now I feel nauseated. We complain to the server and she took off the BLT. This is the worst food I've ever gotten at a black Bear diner. read more
