I've been there a handful of times. And its a very good breakfast cafe. The facility is always clean, the staff is very friendly. The food is great. You get served big portions and it taste very homemade. The chicken fried steak is one of the best i ever had, and I try them everywhere. Their breakfast sausage is amazing. No franchise, no chain, just a real good old Americana mom and pop standby. What we look for. Prices are less than the chains:( Very decent reuben with fresh pastrimi, nice rye bread, side for under $7; Tuna melt with the same, under $7.) The sandwiches were very good, better than you would find at a Denny's or Olive Garden, we believe. The home fries, done crispy were yummy and the cole slaw was fine. Large portions. The servers were about as good as they get. Cheerful, willing to please, always a smile. Decor is kitchy but not obnoxious, just a nice "old days Tucson" kind of place. I had the 'South of the Border' and it was aweful. Chorizo and potatoes way overcooked with paprika dumped on the potatoes ( and I am a huge paprika fan). Tortillas were the store rubbery variation that I normally avoid. Salsa was well... the eggs were fine. Went with two others that had American breakfast options and they looked ok. I hope the cook was out today and someone without any cooking skills was filling in, otherwise I do not see how they can remain open. read more

I had a horrible experience here, my mother ordred a salad and it was absolutely disgustingly limp and brown! The silverware was dirty, the plates had caked on food and the coffee cups were chipped all around the rim. I got a breakfast combo i guess you can call it, with fried potatoes that were like dry hard little rocks? Not to mention everything was cold! And the waitresses were slow and rude with horrible customer service and it took forever. (Look, I know it sounds like Im just some uppity, rude, judgmental 'B'-word, but i have been a server in multiple restaurants. So i know what good service is and i expect nothing less than good service because when I am serving i provide a great experience, with stellar performance of customer service, if my cook's put out crappy food i wont serve it! So believe that when I go out and get crappy services I'm sorry but its not acceptable and the management should get that place in check!) BUT HEY!? Awesome! While in town I love coming here at least once a week! It is quite small and feels very homely, it has fun pictures painted on the walls and makes you feel as if you're in a hokey little country diner! Our service is always fantastic, no matter the server- all very nice women who are always friendly and attentive. This place always gets our special orders down to a T, and often will not charge extra for the small things (Add some jalepenos to the omelette etc) The drinks are usually served in large glasses if you order juice or a soda, they will refill them but in most cases you never finish, but your server will be quick to offer you a to-go cup to take it with you (and even top it off). Everything about this place is perfect, quiet east side location, friendly service, AMAZING low prices, gigantic portions, and a nice relaxed atmosphere with an eclectic mix of people from all ages and walks of life. I have ONE complaint - The Coffee! Please fix this! Despite the coffee this is one of my all time favorite breakfast/lunch places in the U.S. and Yes, I've been to my fair share (300+) Be warned of weekend dining, there might be a bit of a wait, and since it is small, if you have a large group a reservation would be strongly recommended! read more

Hadn't been here in several years, so we decided to stop in. The place hadn't changed a bit on the inside, still has the country/hillbilly paintings. Medium large dinning area with 4 chair tables, a large parties room with long tables, and about 5 seats at the counter. Table service, but you walk up front to pay when your finished. Wait staff was civil and helpful, but not particularly friendly. The menu doen't seemed to have changed at all. It's basically typical American diner breakfast/ lunch items. I had the chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs and home fries. The steak was breaded just enough to be crunchy on the outside while remaining tender on the inside, the country gravey was good without being overly salty like at other establishments. The scrambled egg were fluffy and the home fries were just the way I like them: browned without being overly crunchy. So if you're on the Eastside of town and not looking for anything very fancy, this place is worth checking out. read more

Not only quirky murals, but offers a vast array of breakfast items/plates, including healthy choices such as egg beater veggie omelet. There were 6 of us each ordering a different breakfast platter. From the omelets with fresh veggies, to the pancakes, fried potatoes, and sourdough toast, the food was plentiful, unlimited coffee, the food was cooked just right and with great flavor! Went here late this morning. Second time I've been here and wasn't impressed at all. Sat at the counter and was always seemed to have an empty cup of coffee (weird when you're at the counter). My girlfriend and I went here for breakfast this past Sunday and we have found our new favorite place to get breakfast! I got the farmer's feast and she got the mushroom and Swiss omelette. The feast was absolutely huge!! 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, hash browns and toast all for $7.50!! I got the eggs broiled and they were perfection. The lady loved her omelette and the laid back atmosphere. We went around 1130ish and it wasn't to busy so the service was spot on. Definitely looking to make this place a weekly staple. read more

If I could give a negative star rating I would. Stopped in for a quick breakfast, ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. The eggs were hard and overcooked, the has browns were not cooked at all and were basically raw and very anemic looking, the hash was cooked properly and tasted ok so it was the only thing that I was able to eat. I asked if I could just get a couple pancakes instead, when pancakes came out they tasted sour like they were made with rotten buttermilk, had to send those back also. Our family loves this place. It's great for a leisurely breakfast or lunch. I say leisurely because the food comes in it's own good time, but boy is it worth it. Happy Rooster? More like Prozac Chicken. This restaurant is claustrophobia-inducing, too warm inside and slightly grimy. (The outside of the mug they handed me looked greasy.) The eggs and bacon I ordered were well-cooked, so apparently they keep the person on the grill happy. But the pancakes were heavy and greasy. The bacon was the best part of them meal, a good, thick smoked bacon. The "maple" syrup was in reused maple syrup bottles of many varieties. It was not very flavorful. The wait staff was friendly and fairly attentive, but I was never offered more hot water for my tea. I guess if I'd been up for a greasy spoon and ordered only grill-cooked food it would have merited three stars. At least it was inexpensive. read more

The decor is super cute and the food is very good. The menu is no frills, but the food they serve is solid. The good points: The sourdough toast is delish! it's thick cut and from a local bakery. The ham is a thick slice as well. Every dish is more than enough for one person to eat. Coffee and tea are good. The servers are friendly. The not-so-good points: Don't plan on a quick meal. You'll get your food shortly after ordering, but service after that is sparse. This happened more than once. It took over 30 minutes to get the check both times. It was steady, but not crazy busy and there were 3-4 servers in the small cafe both times. Also, I ordered peach pie, and it looked like something that came from a box in the frozen food section. Not impressive. On the bright side, the waitress did show me the pie first because it was over cooked and asked if I was sure I wanted the pie, which I didn't. I give it 4 stars because I like the food better than our old stand by of the Bread and Butter Cafe, but the service isn't nearly as efficient. read more

Friends of ours recommended this place for breakfast. It definitely didn't disappoint. If you are a big eater, or just super hungry, the Farmer's Feast will fill you up. For those of normal appetites, it's big enough to split between 2. The pancakes are about the size of a frisbee. We had the pecan ones, yummy. If you are a fan of sausage links, these were phenomenal. My sister ordered the chicken fried steak, wished she could have it for breakfast everyday. Staff very friendly, the ambience is super kitschy with roosters reigning supreme. Family and friends from overseas we brought loved the "americana feel" I wish I could dock 1/2 star for the coffee though, it's the worst breakfast diner coffee I have ever had. Service: really slow; waitress lost a tables due to wait but still served regulars before those waiting longer. Food: came out late and really cold. It also tasted prepackaged so while not bad, it's not the best you'll ever have. Biscuits and gravy taste just like same dish at Cindy Lou's cafe. Both likely same prepackaged product from Sysco. This is a favorite of ours. We go every weekend. Not that we haven't tried many other cafes, but keep going back for breakfast or lunch. It is an old DMV building so the parking can get a bit crazy but the murals in the walls both inside and out are very cool. The food is great. The service is great.
