This is a place that must be witnessed to really take in the full experience. It's an old A-frame building that has been modernized into a coffee and pastry shop. There is a great exterior patio area and the service is delightful. I honestly had never heard of a kolache before I visited this facility. I can honestly say that it's a unique but delicious pastry that comes with your choice of filling at this shop. I went with the OG and was definitely not disappointed. I was able to chat with the owner while I waited for my food and had a very lovely interaction. In general, the atmosphere is very friendly and seemed like a very family friendly environment. Man I love a good kolache, and this place has some great ones. The exterior is some of the softest I've ever had on a kolache and I'm here for it. Definitely pillowy dinner roll vibes. I think 2-3 per person is more than enough. I myself am good with two to myself, but we always get a few more so we can try more flavors. We got a few to go and my favorite was definitely the spicy sausage. The cream cheese danish was also phenomenal. The eggs inside were also super soft and not over cooked. I do wish they had a slightly bigger menu, while there were a number of kolaches, it really seemed to just be different combinations of egg, cheese, and some breakfast protien (sausage, bacon, etc.). So one is just egg, then another is egg and cheese, another is sausage, egg, and cheese, then just sausage and egg, etc. All the different combos make it seem like there's a lot, but the real flavor options didn't vary a ton. But I will 100% be back, as it's a great grab and go breakfast options that's super delicious. read more

It's a nice place with very friendly people, it's got some nice seating too, but for me the best part is the food. I ordered three different savory kolaches, and being from Texas I was wondering if they'd hold up. The OG is almost exactly the same, it's got a slightly different texture and the breading is less flaky than what I usually get at home, but it's still very good. The Bacon Me Happy was also super good, it's not like the usual savory kolaches back home but it was very tasty. The Happy Bird uses turkey sausage, which is good for anyone who wants less red meat in their diet, and I liked the cheese a lot. One more difference between these and the ones back home is these are less rectangular, which I think is closer to the original recipe than the ones I'm used to having. read more

Anyone from West, Texas? This place is a lovely reminder of kolaches from West. I had the OG, which was a double smoked sausage and cheese. The sausage was juicy and tasty, the cheese was plentiful. But really the best piece was the dough, it was an enriched dough, super soft, warm, delicious. They spice honey latte I had was also yummy, though very little spice, more a slightly sweet latte. I heard that kolaches is a Texas Thing by way of Czech immigrants who settled there. Started as dough with sweet fillings but Texans twisted the deserts to become a savory Breakfast. Happy Sparrow, is a tiny spot located on Jean Road in Lake Oswego. It gives off vibes of maybe, a former Tasty Freeze or Dairy Queen? When I arrived on a Saturday morning, I was third in line and when I left, there were about 20 customers behind me. There's a case showing the kolaches offerings for the day. You go up to the counter, place your order and then are confirmed whether or not they have run out of any. I had the Bacon, Egg and Potato. It was delicious, could have tried a few more but it was a bit overwhelming, so many choices. There are sweet kolaches as well as Coffee drinks. It's more of order and take out kinda place. What an amazing little gem of a cafe. Was up to Portland on a quick trip, and my local friend recommended I try this place out. And boy, this was a treat. Only had the chance to stop in for one, but I was very impressed with the fare on offer. The kolaches are excellent, with a variety of both sweet and savory flavors. I got to try out the poppy seed-lemon-cocoa nib one, and it was fantastic, my buddy equally enthused about the ham and cheese. And of course, you got coffee and drinks to go along with your order. With prices for everything being quite reasonable, staring at a few dollars per kolache. The service here was outstanding. I had the opportunity to chat with the owner a bit as I tried my kolache, hearing about how he and his wife have tried to make both authentic and unique takes on these old world recipes. This is also one of those small hole-in-the-wall spots I absolutely adore. Just the cozy front room, replete with art and board games, and a pleasant little outdoor seating area. I was also impressed reading the newspaper clippings on the walls, showing how they've been here for more than a decade. Which is odd since it is so highly rated and the owner and seems to love what they do, and you can taste it in every cup and savory oastery made. I really enjoyed the coffee, and the vietnamese coffee was just rich like it should be. I had something simple. A latte, and I loved it. Perfect combo of coffee and milk. Our daughter loved the pastery and ate it all by herself. We got her a hot cocoa, and she almost finished.. Too young to really get it done in a sitting. Happy Sparrow Cafe is a gem. This little coffee shop is tucked into a corner of a busy street in Lake Oswego. The cafe is known for kolache (stuffed yeast buns) which draw a crowd in the morning. The cafe is well-lit due to the enormous windows on three walls. They offer large coffee and tea menu and extremely friendly service. This is a great spot to work remotely with access to a power outlet. You will need to pack your long cord just in case someone else is sitting next to the plug. There is plenty of light and parking and access to free wifi. Ambient high-energy music plays in the background but it isn't loud enough to interfere with video or audio calls. Ok this is the cutest little place and I'm so glad I found it!! If you haven't ever tried kolaches, you need to come here asap. They have a variety of breakfast, sweet, and savory options and I tried one of each. The "Bacon Me Happy" was sooo good. Better than I could've hoped for. It was warm and tasted fresh! I got the bacon egg and cheese kolache, a Nutella kolache, and a strawberry and cream cheese kolache. They are absolutely delicious, and I found them very filling. The worker was so kind, and very quick to get me my food. The inside is beautiful, but I had my dog in the car waiting so I took my food to go. After I put my food in my car, I took my dog on a little walk around the cafe, when the worker came out back to throw away trash she saw my dog and said she could've gave him a pup cup, then we had a sweet conversation about dogs. Most beautiful and welcoming service. I made the mistake of coming in after they already closed, by several minutes. They welcomed me in, and educated me on the "kolache" which is a Texas staple in Houston. How cool. The coffee was done because they were closed so they subbed me for an Americano and gave me great kolache recommendations and the demeanor is just so pleasant. I totally recommend this space and so proud they have short hours, because people deserve to have a life outside of work. And so beautiful to see the love they do put into their actual work with their philosophies and overall temperament. 10 out of 5 stars because they are so great.
