Some of the best East Asian cuisine in LA county. I say this because the food taste great and is presentation beautifully. On top of this the service is very good and the food comes out quickly. I love love love Happy Veggie, I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review! Happy Veggie is the perfect vegan haven. It's delicious, healthy, AND very affordable. Sometimes you only get 2/3 but Happy Veggie hits all the right spots! My absolute favorite thing to get here is the Pho Soup. I am not fully vegan but I have not gone back to regular Pho at all since trying the vegan version here. It's full of veggies and flavor. Who'da thought you don't need beef broth to make a flavorful pho broth! Other highlights of this dish include the faux meatballs that are still tasty (don't taste like meat so manage your expectations, but still yummy). And the very strangely "creamy" and aromatic mushrooms that they include in the soup. This is comfort food at its best! The portions are generous and I typically get two meals out of one dish. Some other honorable mentions are the Kung pao chicken and fresh young coconut that's opened to order. Service is friendly and take out orders are easy and convenient. The space itself is simple and homey, exactly what you'd expect of a mom and pop shop. An extremely worthwhile local business to support for vegans and non vegans alike! read more

Happy Veggie is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants and I am not even vegetarian. I make a point of going there when I drive up from San Diego County. It is small and nicely remodeled, closed on Tuesday, so I make sure I don't drive my trip up on that day. Always have some meals ordered to take home for later dinner. We try this place out because of a friends recommendation since we are now practicing a vegetarian lifestyle... we were encouraged to order the golden tofu. And I'm extremely glad that we did because OMG! They were so good. The bite was soft the tofu was spongy, and while it was not what I expected because it was fried tofu it was delicious, especially when paired with the lemon dipping sauce. Happy Veggie was the first restaurant I ate at in the Redondo Beach area for this trip. I got off my flight, had to spend some extra time at the airport, and when I was picked up, my friends took me directly to this restaurant. Everything is vegan, so honestly, I probably would have been good with anything on the menu! After a few minutes with my food thoughts, I went with the kung pao chicken, and my friends got a pho bowl, and a noodle dish. Everything came out sporadically without initial silverware, with slow water refills. When we came in, we were the only people ordering food - there was one other customer who already had his. We just had a slightly disjointed food delivery with no one else being there. Despite the slow service, we all seemed to enjoy our dishes! I really liked the Kung Pao Chicken, but unfortunately, there was no "Pao" in it. The flavor was just fine, but there was absolutely no heat to it, which disappointed me. So I'm doing the meatless Monday's thing. Today's the first day. We'll see how long I last. Good news is that I'm venturing out to find new places I would normally avoid. Waitress said everything in here is vegetarian. Not too sure about the vegan options, but I'm sure there are. So... vegetarian Vietnamese cuisine. I tried the #10 Pho. It was tasty! Also, this was the first time I ate ALL the stuff in the bowl and all the bean sprouts and mint leaf sprig! Generally I would just finish the noodles and the meat, but since that wouldn't work, I just ate all the 'stuff'... and I liked it! She also brought me out a cup of soup in the beginning which was pretty good. Some sort of veggie soup. This place is completely vegetarian. For what it is, it is pretty good. However, without the meat all of these dishes seems like they are missing something. The dishes feel incomplete. I got the pho. It smelled good and the broth tasted good. But when I slurped up the noodles, they were flavorless. The noodles did not hold the delicious broth at all, and I think is because of the fact that this place is vegetarian. The broth lacked the fat from the usual pork bone broth that clings onto the rice noodles. Likewise, the sauces on the pad thai tasted different and I think it is because of the lack of meat. The refreshing spring roll however were really good. Crisp and refreshing. The staff here are kind but slow and inattentive. The person welcoming customers was hiding under the counter either laying down or sitting out of site. And then when he was above the counter he was constantly on his phone not hearing us calling to him that we were ready to order or ready to pay the check. The place is clean but empty. The food is a 4/5 but overall experience is a 3/5. If you are occasionally vegetarian and craving Vietnamese food that is vegetarian friendly this is the place to go to. However, if you are just craving Vietnamese food or pho, this isn't the place to come to. There are much better more satisfying pho and Vietnamese food in other places. read more

I was the plumber doing work there. Everyone is friendly even though I could not understand them. But they made feel comfortable. This is just the people. The owner offered me food to eat. I never tried this in the past so I didn't know what to order and I was a bit reluctant at first for that reason. I come here once a month or so for my fix of Thai iced tea and green beans and chicken. I love the pho here but it is a HUGE portion so be prepared to share or take some home. The golden tofu is really good too! Staff is limited, so it may take some time to get your waiter's attention if you need something. It was a very cold week in Southern Cali and I just had a root canal and wanted something that was warm and soft to eat. I knew I wanted Pho, so after leaving my appointment, I checked yelp for the nearest Vietnamese restaurant, and although it wasn't nearby, they had great reviews. I get there and after ordering, the lady tells me they ran out of noodles and it would be about a 20 minute wait because someone went to the market to get more noodles. Bummer! Just as I was contemplating if I wanted to wait or not, the guy comes in with big bags full of noodles. Yes! The broth was very flavorful! And I love noodles, so it was a good thing they weren't stingy with the noodles. Couldn't really chew the tofu and the tofu-ish meatball. But other than that, my bowl of Pho was delicious. Finding the restaurant is a bit tricky. I used google maps and it had me going around in circles, not knowing that I was right where I needed to be. I am happy! Boyfriend picked this place because he was being a vegetarian for a week, and this was a GREAT choice! I don't usually eat vegetarian food, especially for dinner, but this place win me through. We were seated and saw a flyer on the wall saying "check in on yelp, get pot of tea for two free." Didn't have to ask, was already on it! Started with chicken drum stick. Fried soy bean tofu which tasted like a fried chicken. The crunch and texture can fool a non vegetarian. The pot of tea comes in caffeine taste or non caffeine (fruit tea). We ordered their traditional pho, which has tofu, imitation beef balls mainly tofu based (yum) and lots of veggies. Thank you server guy for remembering bringing siracha and hoisen sauce. Even he said that my pho will not be complete without the sauce! Boyfriend got the clay pot 'fish'. So good with brown rice. Their imitation of fish is mainly slices of soy bean tofu that looks and the texture tastes like fish. This dish came along with a salad and a few pickled veggies. The fish that the dish is trying to replicate is catfish, which is a very popular fish used in a majority of Vietnamese dishes. If it is Vietnamese, then it is likely that the fish will be catfish, FYI. The fish is replicated with veggie fish protein. There is also eggplant, which gives it the fishy taste. I am not sure if fish sauce is used in this dish (which would make it not vegan), but it taste just like the non-vegan version. However, I like the vegan version a lot better than it is less salty. Although the dish may not look very attractive, it is full of flavor and depth. You get a choice of brown or white rice with this dish. **FOODIE STAMP OF APPROVAL** Lemongrass Chicken ($10.95) This is made with soy protein that replicates the texture of chicken breasts! This is then mixed with lemongrass, onions and celery. The sauce is sweet and sour. You can choose brown rice or white rice with your dish. I've revisited Happy Veggie for a handful of times now. I've had such awesome experiences that this place deserves an update and an extra star! Filled with so many goodies like noodles, king mushrooms, "meat" balls. It also comes with a side of chopped cabbage (green and red) and shiso leaves to add to the bowl. SO DELICIOUS! The Veggie Wrap is the biggest plate of food I've ever ordered! The Veggie Wrap is a bánh xèo, a toasty rice batter pancake stuffed with bean sprouts, carrots, and faux shrimp. This crepe-like item takes up half of the plate. The other half of the plate is like a garden bouquet of lettuce, basil, shiso leaves, and cilantro. You basically cut the bánh xèo into smaller pieces and roll it up in a lettuce leaf with all the other herbs. I've had this at other Vietnamese restaurants before but I like this one the best! I'm getting better at wrapping them up too thanks to Bill at Happy Veggie who offered to show me his veggie wrapping technique :) Which brings me to another reason for updating this with an extra star: The Service! Super friendly staff. One time one of the owners, Pam, noticed the origami bird chopstick holder that I made out of my chopstick wrapper. She liked it so much, I offered to show her how I made it. So she brought over extra wrappers, sat with us at our table and I gave her a quick origami lesson. During this time, she shared with us how to make vegan flan.
