It has sentimental value , so i decided to reupholster all 6 chairs. Pono couldn't match the fabric but searched and found something that was very close. He came and repaired all six chairs at a very reasonable price. We had a little bit of communication difficulty in the beginning, but that was speedily resolved. I am so glad that he took the job as others refused to come to our house to pick up the chairs....we would have had to drop them off at their repair shop. The chairs came out beautifully and I am happy with the job, well done.

Unfortunately, the company it was purchased from was no longer in business. I didn't know who to call so I decided to check Yelp by inputting "futon sofa frame repair" and clicked on get estimates. To my surprise I got 5 responses all saying that my frame was repairable which made me quite happy. All had different suggestions based on the pictures I posted in my request. I selected The Leather Doctor Hawai'i because not only could he fix the frame but he could also fix our dining room chairs. He even had connection for getting the backing of our sofa cover and pillows replaced. I definitely made the right choice. A couple days later Pono came to the house to look at the "damage". He said it was definitely repairable. He would glue the original piece together, add a bracket behind it AND put in another "leg" for added support matching the color to the original as much as he could. Looking at our dining chairs he said just the webbing needed replacement as the set was also over 20 years old. The covers were fine. I was very pleased with his honesty as my husband and I thought we needed new cushions, etc. He left saying Thea, his assistant, would be sending me an estimate. The estimate came a few hours later. The best thing about all of this was that we didn't need to scramble to try to rent a truck to bring the items to him as neither we nor our friends own one. Everything would be completed on site. That was definitely a PLUS! Once I agreed to his estimate, Thea called for scheduling. Pono arrived promptly. Very courteous, friendly and respectful. He explained each step he worked. I was impressed that he notched the wood so that the board could easily rest in. It was centered and the tops of both boards matched. It looked like it was meant to be there. While the leg paint dried, Pono worked on our cushions. Again explanations were given as he replaced the webbings. The chairs now are comfortable to sit on and we no longer feel like we're "sinking." My family and I couldn't be happier with the results of his 5 hours of work. When the work was completed Pono cleaned after himself and took our sofa and pillow covers for repairing. Thank you, Pono. You are a gem!!!

The man at the front was friendly and agreed that I could pick them up the following Saturday. I paid $105 for all three. He gave me a pick up tag. I went to pick up the following Saturday. The same man greeted me and asked me to describe the pairs and what I wanted done. The pick up tag was no help. He couldn't find my shoes, so he asked me to come in the back to look for them. There was another man in the back as well, working on shoes. There were shoes strewn on shelves in different areas and there didn't seem to be a systematic way they were organized. We found one of my pairs tossed on a shelf. The other two looked to be tossed in a box with other black shoes needing work. None were started on. I wasn't angry; just a bit surprised at the disorganization and the way shoes appeared tossed around in the back. Both men said the 3 pairs would likely be done by Thursday. I said I would come back the following Saturday. I went back the following Saturday and the same thing happened; he asked me to describe the shoes, couldn't find them, asked me to go in the back to look. The other man was also in the back working again. My 3 shoes were in different areas. One was on what he called the "finished" shelf but wasn't finished because the heels weren't replaced; one had the insole done and heels replaced but heels needed to be grinded down to the proper shape (which he did in a few minutes and gave to me finished); the last one wasn't started yet. Again, I wasn't angry because these 2 older men were very nice. The man who was working in back asked if I wanted to come back or wait 15 minutes for the one that was half done and needed heels. I said I'd come back. It was 11:45. The sign on the door says they close at 1:00. The man from the counter said they close at 2:00 but 1:30 would be a good time to come back. I said ok. I came back at 1:30 and the shop was dark; the door was locked. I called and there was no voicemail. I was annoyed. I called on the third Saturday (3 weeks since I dropped off and paid). The man who answered was the man in back. He asked what shoes did I have; he couldn't find the shoes at first and said I'd have to come down. I said I was the lady who came the last 2 Saturdays. He found them and I picked them up. The heel replacement was fine. However, I expected that the insoles would have been replaced, not the new ones glued over the old worn out ones. Is that normal? And they weren't glued on well; there was space and I could gently peel the layers back. I used Shoe Goo and glued them myself. I won't be back to Joe Pacific even if those guys were nice.

Then I discovered McCully Shoe & Luggage, thanks to Yelp and a friend's recommendation. Easy to get to. Took the #6 and got off at McCully and walked down towards Kapiolani Blvd. Brought back memories from when I used to live on Date Street back in the 1980's & 90's. Nothing much has changed, which felt kind of warm & fuzzy. Walked into the shop and Richard Pae, owner and operator of this long established neighborhood business greeted me and asked me what I needed done. I showed him my knapsack's zipper that had come apart. He looked over the zipper & couldn't find any broken "teeth" so he was baffled how the the zipper mechanism had come apart. He had me wait for a few minutes while he helped another customer, then got to work on my bag, which he fixed in no time flat. Thank you so much , Richard. Your talents will always be in demand.

Some were negative, specifically towards the owner of the shop and some were great (in regards to his quality of work). I brought my big suitcase here after the wheels fell apart. The owner checked it out and said that he could replace all 4 for 80$. After the replacement, the suitcase rolled better than when I first bought it! The only gripe would be the price because you can buy a set of 4 basic luggage tires really cheap. But I guess it's the labor that added up. I'm glad I got it fixed though. Check em out if you're needing to replace broken luggage tires!

I had a going away gift for a Cub Scout pack member that needed to be done at the last minute. I searched Oahu for engraving shops and came upon Engraving Hawaii. Previously I had passed by it a couple times while walking around the Schofield Exchange, but never looked in before. I walked in and there were two customers in front of me. Nick was helping other customers and told me he would assist me as soon as he could. When it was my turn, I explained what I needed and when I needed it, but Nick explained they had an influx of rush jobs that needed to be completed. He let me know that it was unlikely to be finished by the requested date, and I was ok with it, because I tend to follow the saying, "Poor planning on your part does not necessitate an emergency on mine." That evening, I receive a text message from the shop requesting I proof-read and approve the layout. They got the layout exactly how I requested and I quickly replied it was perfect. I was afraid to think that it might get finished in time, but their quick draft gave me a glimmer of hope that it would be ready in time. The next day I got a message telling me the item was ready. I rushed over to the shop and sure enough it was completed and looked fantastic. Because of Engraving Hawaii, we were able to present the award at the banquet for the departing member! I was so impressed with the friendly and professional service. The team is really customer-focused, and based on what I was hearing from their interactions with the other customers they were going to try everything in their power to get requests just right. Cheers, Nick!
