Stopped by for a burger and a beer to drown in my solitude. Had great service. Prompt, attentive and genuine. Only downside was some pretentious guy named Jeff kept whining about the hostess and the service being "special needs" because he couldn't get his group prompt service under 15 minutes on a special holiday. If it wasn't for some derogative guy whining off the bell about how the service wasn't up to par every couple minutes I'd have enjoyed what would've been quite a depressing day for me. Other than that, burger was damn heavenly. Beer was cold and good. Service was grand. Some people just ruin it for others. Great spot, great burger, good beer and good folks. B.W.

The last time I set foot inside their Pleasure House Rd location was at least 10 years ago. I celebrated my birthday there as my friends were kind enough to take me out. It was a Sunday morning and I sought out a place that offered brunch. I noticed 1608 was open and decided to head over, especially since I haven't visited them in ages. When I walked in, I noticed their dining room is dimly lit - much darker than I remember. I was greeted immediately by a kind hostess and she proceeded to sit me at a nearby table and provided me with menus (one food, one alcohol). I took my time looking over the food menu, and in the meantime I ordered a pint of Center of the Universe's Bald Irishman and a bottle of Boylan's Black Cherry soda (they do not have a soda fountain). What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. After my meal, I continued to catch up with him at the bar. His presence made a pleasant experience even more fantastic. I thought I was hungry, so I ordered 2 dishes - Smoked Ham Fried Rice and the Breakfast Burrito. According to Hunter, every item is made fresh in house. After biting into each, you could tell that's true. Both the fried rice and burrito were delicious and boasted lots of flavor. Although I prefer my fried rice a bit simpler (if you give me just garlic fried rice, I am SET), 1608's fried rice (veggies, garlic, soy, basmati rice, 2 runny eggs, smoked ham) had a lot going on, which made for a flavorful dish. I liked the rice and the burrito (Korean style fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cilantro lime, cheddar, pico de gallo) a lot. I didn't finish either because it was a lot of food (I really thought I was hungry, haha). But these leftovers turned into a fantastic dinner later on. 1608 looked clean and organized, although I thought it was a little too dark inside, at least for brunch service. That's not a dealbreaker since everything from the food to the service was as excellent as I remember. I hope to return soon with my mom. Regardless, I'll find my way back eventually. Thank you, 1608 Crafthouse! And great seeing you again, Hunter! JV

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

I chose the Becca Burger, without mushrooms and their Steak Diablo Fries. They make everything fresh, to order with fresh ingredients. The burger was clearly freshly hand-packed, the jalapeños were freshly sliced, not pickled. Since they make it all fresh, you might wait a few minutes longer than the typical burger joint, but that's fine considering the amazing eats you're about to enjoy. My burger came out looking beautiful and it was definitely sitting tall! The flavor was excellent! Meat was great too!! I definitely liked having their chipotle mayo on it!! Those steak Diablo fries were incredibly tasty, with a nice kick, but sooo much more flavor than heat! The fries themselves were great, perfectly crispy and tasty, but adding all those toppings truly made it special! Service was nice... I had a few questions and she was helpful with the answers. Lastly, they have birch beer here, which I loved! Highly recommend stopping in for a great burger and fries experience!!

Though there weren't many people in the restaurant at all, the kitchen was really backed up and it took a long time for our food to come out. This didn't make sense at all honestly, so I'm not sure what the issue was. Didn't get to snap a picture, but they had a decent little amount of arcade games inside, which was pretty cool; wasn't expecting to see those in there. Also one of the dessert items I wanted to try: the salted caramel brownie, was out of stock, so I did have to change my dessert choice; unfortunately. To drink: I got the Watermelon Limeade (8.5/10) it was easy to drink, honestly just tasted like a fruity soda with a very tiny buzz to it. I would've liked it a bit more if it was a little stronger. Also tried the Dirty Berry Mojito (10/10) I absolutely loved the flavor of this Mojito and it was a lot stronger than the limeade. Def had a buzz after finishing it. After I was done, felt like I should've really just ordered two of the mojitos only. To eat: I got half Strawbenero BBQ (9/10) and half Spicy Garlic Ranch (6.5/10) boneless wings. The strawberry-habanero mix wings were really different and unique. When I first bit into them, I tasted the strawberry glaze and after a few more chews, that's when the spice settled in. I think it was different and actually pretty good. As for the spicy garlic ranch wings, I feel like they really tasted like regular buffalo sauce wings. I'm not sure if the kitchen mixed up what flavors I ordered, but they def tasted like regular buffalo and not anything garlicky or ranch flavor. Also did a side order of the loaded tots (2/10) the tots were cooked nice and crispy, but the loaded toppings had absolutely no flavor. There was chilli and cheese and after even giving the chilli a taste by itself, there was truly no seasoning in it at all. I wouldn't order this again. Also got dessert: the Cracker Jack Cheesecake (10/10) cheesecake is my favorite dessert, and I love the toppings of caramel and toffee; pretty sure it was supposed to have a chocolate drizzle on it, but the caramel was really good so no complaints. I totally see myself going back again, their hotdogs on the menu looked really really good and I would like to try some more of their unique wing flavors. My overall rate of experience : 7.7/10

It was challenging to find parking but thankfully, we were able to find a spot right in the front. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were seated right away. With it being lunch time, we assumed we would be able to grab some lunch but to our surprise, they were serving brunch and we were only able to order off the brunch menu. We were slightly confused and definitely didn't have taste for breakfast items so we had to choose from a small selection of non-breakfast items. We started with Palomas. The drink menu only included the drink prices for Happy Hour, and it definitely wasn't Happy Hour, so we weren't sure how much the drinks were. The server mentioned one price, then came back and told us another price but either way, all that would've been eliminated if the prices were on the menu. After looking over the brunch menu, my friend didn't see anything appetizing so she asked if they could make a BLT Sandwich, which wasn't on the menu, and they agreed. I decided on the Crab Cake Sandwich. The food was served in decent time. My friend had an end piece of tomato on her sandwich, which was disappointing. Our server took her sweet time checking on us so and we literally had to flag down another server just to get ketchup. My sandwich didn't even come with remoulade sauce that was supposed to be added. I did enjoy my sandwich though, it was very tasty. I also ordered the Bourbon Glaze Wings 'to-go' and they were delicious. From not being able to order from a lunch menu, to our server not being attentive at all, our experience wasn't that great. We also had to battle flies the entire time we were there, and we were sitting inside so that was a bit frustrating. The restaurant is located right by the Marina and it has great views but the service left a lot to be desired. I may return for dinner in hopes of a better experience but it probably won't be any time soon.
