Tried Hokkaido for the first time yesterday specifically because my sister wanted AYCE. When we got in, we were greeted and seated immediately which was great. However, we were given the regular menu. I just assumed maybe it was no longer AYCE. We asked a server walking by and she did inform us there were 2 menu options. She brought us the AYCE menu. I think when we were greeted we should've been asked which menu we'd like or at least given both. Anyway, I had a house salad, a shrimp tempura roll, the Ginza roll, a volcano roll, and the seafood fried rice. I also tried my sisters salmon skin roll. I really like their ginger dressing on the house salad compared to other restaurants. The Ginza roll is a cooked salmon roll with cucumber. I really liked it. However, if you prefer something a little less fishy tasting with some crunch, I'd recommend the salmon skin roll. It has a light salmon taste since there isn't much actual salmon in it. I did not like the volcano roll at all. It was really mushy and something was just off about it. The fried rice was really good BUT I don't like that the menu says it comes with "crab" when really it's imitation crab meat. The shrimp in it are huge tho and the rice itself is really flavorful. Overall, we had a good experience. Everything was fresh and came out fast. Our server was on top of it even tho she talked entirely too fast and I barely got anything she was actually saying! The restaurant itself is a nice vibe and super spacious. It could definitely be a good spot for a large party. $26.99 isn't bad at all for AYCE. I'd definitely visit again. Oh yea - If you pay with a credit card, don't forget to get it out of the holder. Their holders don't have the little slot up top where your card sticks out. It was placed behind my receipt copies when handed back to me, and I ended up forgetting to grab it. Had to go back and get it today. This was our second visit. We came during a very hectic lunch on Valentine's Day. Under those circumstances, it would be reasonable to expect that the quality of the food and service might not be up to par. But that wasn't the case at all - everything was excellent. Our waitress informed us that the Uni( sea urchin) was fresh. It was exquisite. The Eel Roll was perfect with a nice light sauce. My wife had several pieces of sushi, including egg, which were all very fresh. This restaurant offers a lot of selections that you won't find at your typical sushi establishment. Great happy hour specials inside a cool spot right in downtown Norfolk with fresh flavorful rolls and kind service. Stopped in around 3:45 and was able to take advantage of their happy hour menu which goes to 6 and is quite extensive! Ordered 2 rolls, California rolls and a shrimp tempura roll, and both were freshly made and tasty! Husband enjoyed a corona and I had a blue Hawaiian and those were also good drinks and on Happy Hour Special. Waitress was kind and made sure we had the eel sauce and spicy mayo that was requested. A quick walk from the waterfront, it's pretty inside. There's circular booths and several tables downstairs with additional seating upstairs. Someone was celebrating a birthday with sake and it sounded like a fun time! I could easily see 2 open tables we could have been seated at but instead we had about a 15 minute wait. The wait staff were on the move but three separate times we were asked how many were in our party. Finally we were seated and orders taken. The miso soup was hot and good. I asked for the all you can eat menu and waited about 8 minutes for someone to rudely throw the menus on the table while speed walking past us. Then IMMEDIATELY a server asked us what we wanted, didn't even have a second to look at the menu, we told her we needed a second. A couple of friends and I were out celebrating an exam. We ended up choosing Hokkaido because they have both sushi and hibachi options. They have a pretty extensive list for sushi. We ended up all ordering different versions of their lunch bento box. Which comes with a salad, California rolls, rice, and whatever sushi or dish you choose. The waitress was nice, and really tried to get our meal going by suggesting saki. We were a little frustrated that she tried to sell us two $15 bottles, instead of just shots. However, when we explained to her she gladly took the bottles back. We ended up sharing the Scorpion drink which was very strong, but made for a fun afternoon. Hokkaido is located in the middle of downtown Norfolk inside of a beautiful historical building. It's very casual and they have both tables and booths. We were seated in a booth but the seats were old and not very comfortable. They also have a small outdoor seating area along the sidewalk. My husband and I came for early dinner on a Saturday night. It was quiet at first but quickly became very busy. We ordered fried oysters, and various sushi and rolls. They were all fresh and delicious but our favorite was the spicy scallops sushi. My husband had a large hot sake and a 375 ml bottle of room temperature nigori (unfiltered) sake - he enjoyed both (I just had hot green tea). The service was speedy at the beginning, but as the place got busier, the server became less attentive. We had to ask a couple of different servers to order additional items. However, the food was so good and all servers were helpful enough that it wasn't a dealbreaker. The price was very reasonable for sushi dinner, especially for a downtown location. My brothers and I wanted sushi, and we decided on Hokkaido because we were in downtown Norfolk for the day. We went during lunch, and it was surprisingly busy. We chose all you can eat option, which was decently priced. They had a good variety of sushi, entrees, and appetizers on the menu. The food came out quick and everything was good. I do not like cream cheese on my rolls or in it. I was glad I was able to get it without the cheese. What I did not like was the avocado on the rolls. They tasted and felt mushy. It had a bitter taste to it, so I think the avocado wasn't fresh. The service was nice. Our waitress was attentive and frequently made rounds to make sure our drinks were refilled and check to see if we wanted to order more. Overall, the building is beautiful and had a nice ambiance. I was SO excited to be getting some amazing sushi, while visiting my daughter and son-in-law here in Norfolk. They have been to Hokkaido sushi before and raved about it. We got to the restaurant close to 8pm, it was about half full, with a party group upstairs. They were very short staffed, working hard for sure, but it took us 20 min to get water and our order taken once we were seated. We placed our drinks, appetizer and main course orders in all at once. The drinks took a while to arrive, but again, I could see the staff was hustling as best as they could. They were very friendly and did follow up with us a few times after getting our food. The martinis were so refreshing and delicious. Perfectly cooked gyoza, not heavily fried and they were hot and steamy inside. LOVE Oshinko rolls and they were very fresh and crunchy.
