The "Americanized" Pandemic: This place suffers from a common issue found in many Asian fusion spots across the US--it's heavily Americanized. It loses all the traditional, delicate flavors of real Japanese cuisine. Ambiance & Noise: The restaurant is always way too loud. Went here for dinner Wednesday night around 6 pm. Was craving sushi and wanted to try some things I haven't before, so decided to go back to volcano again. Inside was packed, but we didn't have a wait time at all. Waitress was quick to get our drink orders and shortly after, put in our food. To drink, I tried the Royal Flush (9/10), I loved the flavor. For appetizer, I had the Soft shell crab (10/10) and Gyoza dumplings (8/10) they were decent, not super flavorful as before. For sushi, I tried the Sea angel (10/10), Lobster cha cha (8.5/10) it was a little lacking in overall taste for me, Red dragon (7/10) and Yellowtail with Jalepeno (7/10); both were just okay to me. My goal is to try a new roll / menu item every time I visit, so of course, I'll be back again in the future. Been meaning to try their AYCE sushi for a few months now. Today was my chance, I am glad that i did. The sushi rolls were good, they did not have lots of rice like many of the ayce sushi places, fish was fresh except for the one roll with the spicy shrimp salad on it... it had a little bit of a fishy taste to it. Not sure if it was supposed to be like that or not, but for me, I hate that fishy taste from any kind of fish. I tried about 7 different rolls, including Philly, Rainbow, Fantasy, Spicy Girl, Crazy Train, Butterfly, and Spicy Tuna. What I liked about the rolls was that they were not over stuffed with rice, on a few of the rolls you could actually taste the fish. For the rolls with crab, they used real crab meat and not the imitation crab. Their signature item is mango, so there are a few rolls that have mango in them.My favorite was the Fantasy Roll with cream cheese, shrimp tempura, avocado, and crab. Atmosphere was relaxed and laid back, not too noisy. Service was great, took about 10 mins from order to having food on the table. And the price cant't be beat for Ayce lunch sushi for $16. A group of us went for a random Sunday get together. Our party of 8 was seated within minutes off arriving so points for quick friendly service. Our server was equally as prompt and at our table as soon as we were seated. She explained the ordering process took our drink orders and gave us time to browse the options. When she returned for our orders she answered the various questions we had and gave suggestions on how much we should start with. Each person started an appetizer, with two rolls and a hot item: edamame, shumai dumplings, spring rolls and the appetizer sampler. Main rolls included shrimp tempura, volcano, spicy salmon, California, Philly and crunchy roll. We also had orders of orange and teriyaki chicken, fried rice and lo mein. Appetizers came out quickly and were hot and fresh. All of were tasty and pretty standard. All the rolls came out at various points so some of our party got their rolls on the heels of appetizers while some of us waited longer for ours. Not a problem just a point to know. After the intial rolls and appetizers our party ordered as they wanted and it was harder to keep up with what new roll each person was trying. Our server also had some difficulty and forgot a few items but quickly got us what we wanted. All the rolls were good so you can't make a bad choice. If the orange chicken is available give it a try. My husband and I met up with his coworkers for lunch here on 10/5, and really enjoyed our time and meals. We were a large party of 8 but our server Kevin managed our numerous orders well. All 8 of us ordered several rounds of food since so much of the menu is all-you-can-eat, and Kevin did a great job balancing all of that. The food was DELICIOUS. Each week I've been thinking about going back since. I'm not used to an all-you-can-eat menu and almost ate until I was too full, but it was worth it! I ordered from the all-you-can-eat menu the whole time, which has so many tasty options. I ordered the Thai Red Curry, Vegetable Lo Mein, Volcano Rolls, and two orders of the Sweet Potato Rolls. I'm still thinking about those Sweet Potato Rolls. This place hands-down has the best sushi and the best price for it I've experienced in the area! My partner and I went tonight and we had an excellent experience. We normally go to a different AYCE sushi restaurant, but we decided upon this one instead. Our server was kind, efficient, and very quick with everything we ordered. We started with apps, but he told us the kitchen was backed up and recommended we order rolls, so we did (it was still pretty quick though!). The ambiance is nice, although their music is specifically chosen to make you feel rushed to quickly eat and leave (that part I don't like, but also I get it). I could do without the music. I strolled into Volcano for dinner on 2/5/23 after hittin' up Tealux for the Yelp Elite Week event. This was my first visit to this Volcano in years, so it felt like I was trying them for the first time. This is one of the few ayce sushi spots in Norfolk. The ayce routine mirrors other local ayce sushi spots - you order, they bring you your food, you eat, repeat. For $23, Volcano is a good option, especially if you're hungry. I noticed there are some stipulations with their food - sashimi is excluded from ayce. They charge $0.50 apiece - that adds up if you're looking to eat fish without the filler (i.e., rice). Volcano must've encountered this situation a multitude of times and their food cost took a hit. So, no ayce sashimi. There is a Sushi Bar Appetizer section that has an order limit of 4 per person. In case you're wondering why, well, there's a Sashimi Appetizer and a Sashimi Island listed in that section. You can't be eatin' all the fish, yo! Service was okay. Our server was quiet but nice - no issues there. There were some communication issues because we ordered some items that never arrived. The good thing is that since we kept ordering we could get those missing items during the next round. So, no real loss there. Overall, this was a positive experience. Last time I went to this place it was not "all you can eat". There is a small waiting area, but we were seated within 2minutes. There is on street parking, not metered, so that's good, if you can find a spot. Do not use the TASTE lot, its strictly for them. I've been coming to this restaurant for nearly a decade. The food has always been good, and the reception staff have consistently been polite and helpful. Over time, though, we started noticing some things that made us uncomfortable. The owner often speaks rudely to the front desk staff--we've overheard them yelling or berating employees while placing phone orders, and on several occasions, the owner has taken over the call in a very unprofessional way. The staff also seems to turn over constantly, which says a lot. What really turned us off was hearing the owner make negative remarks about this country. That, combined with how they treat their employees, has left a bad impression. We've since decided to come here less often. A friend of ours recommended Volcano's AYCE since everything was made fresh, so we decided to give it a try... it exceeded expectations! The dinner special is $22.99 and includes appetizers, regular (maki) rolls, specialty rolls or entree choices, and dessert. I started with a green salad, which was swimming in water, and included a watered-down ginger dressing. The shrimp tempura was also good, but noticeably frozen. We ordered a variety of rolls for the table and my favorite was actually the vegetable dragon roll, which included a sizable portion of sweet potato. I know some have a certain feeling about buffets but this one is quite different. The food is not cooked in mass amounts and left in a trough waiting to be selected. It is all you can eat but you have a two hour time limit to try the varying goodies. It is a Japanese themed buffet but you are served in small amounts. I don't mind this time limit. Even though you paid for the buffet it is still a feeling that irks me when I see food wasted because someone lets their kid be in charge and order everything with no intention of eating it all. I say kid but these days adults are the kids. Food is very good and I was surprised the first time I went there at the options and taste of the food. This is far different than some of the buffet places where sushi/rolls/sashimi is left out and just produced in mass quantities because of the large number of people. With limited customers it feels more like a regular sit down place instead of a buffet. Food is made as you order it and never have I had an issue with food coming out cold or that lukewarm feeling when you know it was left under a heating lamp. Yes there is a good choice of hot food and I would suggest the tempura veggies along with any of the rolls. I am working on trying a new roll on every visit to try something different. And since it's all you can eat I definitely get exactly what I asked for. For an AYCE sushi place in Norfolk VA it's actually not bad. My friends and I continuously gave this place business throughout our five years in Norfolk and coming from NYC where there's a plethora of AYCE sushi spots to choose from I find that this place is actually solid. Firstly, it's AYCE sushi so expect that. Secondly, this is one of those sushi spots owned by Chinese people so you won't get authentic Japanese cuisine here. It's quite modernized from the deep fried volcano rolls, to the chicken fried rice. ROLLS - for the spicy lovers check out spicy girl, dragon roll. Spicy california is very minimally spicy. but the spicy girl comes with a sliver of jalapeno and a dot of hot sauce and packs a nice punch. Rainbow roll for the raw fish lovers, and ofc the always favorite shrimp tempura roll which they dress with wasabi mayo here. KITCHEN ITEMS - can't go wrong with the gyoza, shrimp shumai (small, white ones - not dim sum quality, but juicy, shrimpy and standard), appetizer platter if you're hungry. Everything is just about what you'd expect; nothing is really subpar. Miso soup, DESSERT - green tea ice cream - fried ice cream if you haven't had it is amazing. They also have a couple desserts on the AYCE menu, but also separate desserts you can buy that are wonderful. Service is always kind and attentive as well. I love all of the a la carte sushi. They did not have the ikura this time, but today I enjoyed the masago and red/green tobiko. I tried raw squid for the first time here and the surf clam, and I also ordered the classic salmon sushi a la carte. The seafood here is always fresh and tender. Delicious!! I love that they have crab rangoons here. They serve a different sauce than Chinese restaurants usually have, but they are still delicious. This used to be my GO-TO spot. I mean this place used to be the absolute best. But these past few times it's just been.... AWFUL. The food does not taste as fresh as it used to. The way the food is prepared is.... Interesting. My house salad was a chunk of lettuce thrown in a pool of dressing. Next, i think it's just a little awkward that the servers sit in the tables next to guests and eat / kiss partners/ play around while their tables are right next to them. They're offering 20% off all takeout orders to entice business while closed inside. Pickup was also pretty painless. Hardest part was finding an on-street parking spot. Overall food quality is 3.5 stars. Rice heavy Sushi was ok (soy, ginger and wasabi make everything better) but both entrees - chicken lo mein and teriyaki chicken - were bland. I don't eat much fried food but veggies were pretty good. Crab Rangoon had 0 crab, just cream cheese. "Salad" was just lettuce and dressing. Portions were above average; dinner bento boxes come with choice of 1 sushi roll, 2 apps, 1 entree, and 1 side (salad or soup). 2 dinner bento boxes and 2 extra rolls fed my wife and I with some leftovers for $35 total (after disc). The food was amazing! My waitress was sweet and always anticipated when I needed my next round of items. The Cons: The only con I have was the fact they were out of Gyoza (potstickers).
