Terrible customer service waited 15 minutes for my order to get taken, even though there was only two other people inside the restaurant. The owner was there as well and instead of helping customers or taking orders he just sat there like the lazy slob he is with his girlfriend stuffing her face with food looking at us wait. The cook took his sweet time to get to us as if we weren't even there. Worst customer service experience I've ever had. I will NEVER eat here again bad customer service, long wait times even with only two customers in the restaurant and very unfriendly staff. read more

One of the best 24-hour diners on the west side. Started going here back in the late 60's, place hasn't changed. Burgers have always been good, one of the few places where you can watch them being cooked. I came for the atmosphere, but I'll come back for the food. My breakfast - 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 slices of French toast - was cooked perfectly. Seriously, perfectly. Fully cooked egg whites and runny yolks, bacon crispy but not burned, with no rubbery fat globs - far, far better than the over- or under-done breakfasts at chain diners. The service is friendly and quick, and the dining area appears clean. It's a small place, with stools around the counter as the only seating, so it might get slow and crowded at peak mealtimes. But they're open 24 hours, and serve most of the menu all of the time, so just pick a quieter time to visit. I'm already trying to figure out when I can go back. read more

Would love to tell how the food tastes but after 2 different trips there, we have never gotten any. 1st time we went, they had no cook. 2nd time, we waited over 50 min for a burger and a quesadilla. We tried to get the waitress attention to ask to remove our ticket as we were leaving, but were not able to. The place had 3 couples and 2 families at the time. My partner and I were in the area and googled "diners" Harlo came up. We decided to give it a try. It was super cute inside. They had a huge bar to sit at, and they had some tables as well. It reminded me of a 1950's diner. I loved it. The prices were amazing. I asked the waitress what she recommended and she said many people would order the double cheese burger. My partner and I each ordered double cheese burgers and a side of cheese fries. The burgers were amazing! They are thin patties 1/8 of a lbs. so a double was perfect. It came with grilled onions and pickles. It was great. The French fries are crinkle fries, and they cake with cheese all over them. Everything was so tasty! And for dessert we ordered a strawberry banana milkshake- recommendation of the waitress. This has now become one of our favorite little gems. On the menu they had something about "club harlo" so we had to ask, towards the back there was a an entrance to a bar, they have a pool table, dart board back there as well. I just was in love. Few things to note- it is cash only (they do have an ATM) and the prices are very reasonable, but everything is a la carte, even paying for lettuce or tomato on the burger. Again is not a huge deal since the prices are so reasonable- but I thinks it important to know. I can't wait to go back. read more

Went to the new Harlo. They moved the sign and had wall painting of the old grill on 24th street. Why bother? This place is nothing like the old one. I walked in with my family passed the counter and said hello to the woman there. She just stared at me, did not return the greeting and did not smile. So we sat down at a table by the window. It was filthy. There were crumbs and stains sticky residue all over the table. We saw what looked like a couple servers, but they completely ignored us, even when I called out to them to ask if they had table service. But they would not even turn their heads. They just sat at the counter like they were customers. We sat there for about ten minutes waiting for something, anything to happen but no. Then my husband said maybe we should leave. So we went to Gene and Jude's and ate delicious hot dogs fries and tamales. So goodbye Harlo. Good riddance. read more

Came up to Chicago for a convention and was looking for something good to eat around my hotel near the airport. I usually ask the locals what's good and some people from Target near by said Harlo's was good and it was open 24 hours! I love local places and the diner had that classic burger joint feel. I'm a pescatarian so I couldn't try their burgers but asked them to make a veggie sandwich for me with as many veggies as they could. What came in my to go order was absolutely delicious! Amazing baguettes and the chef added mushrooms, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and eggs which was surprisingly really filling for how cheap everything was. I stopped in harlo on north avenue wedenesdat on my way home from work about 10:15 PM. it was the worse food I've ever had. I ordered eggs over easy, bacon and toast. if I could post a picture of what it looked like and the service was terrible. the eggs were burnt and very oily. how difficult is it to cook eggs?? the hsshbruwns were burnt also and dried out. the bacon wasn't even cooked all the way. they actually put sone oil on top of the bacon to cook it. the guy that was trying to cook gave me my food and I was sitting there with no utensils. The food is great for a dive, I love that they use fresh mushrooms. I used to phone-in my order overnight on the way to work but since reopening, there have new hours. Today was my first visit dine-in visit at the new location. I did love my food (Harlo skillet with chihuahua cheese) but noticed something disturbing while eating... A male that may have been a relative to the owner (mostly stood around talking and took a few orders), was coughing directly into his hand. Later, this same hand (without being washed), was used to take money, serve food (chilling station to plate) and a drink. The gentleman later puts his coat on, zips it (maybe he washed his hands before the coat) and throws frozen food in the fryer. I'm grateful I did not observe this man around my food but it was disgusting. THE BOMB! We are fans of TRUE diners and have tried them all over Chicago for over a decade now as well as all over the country on every single roadtrip. Route 66 diners, Texas diners, Mississippi, you name it. But this is one of the best diners EVER, anywhere. Like an old guy dive bar, the true American diner is a work of art and a rare rare bird. But I know the real thing when I see it and this is IT. We drive all the way from Oak Park to get here - it is THAT good. Cheap, fresh, fast, and amaaaaazingly DELICIOUS!!! Try the pancakes with fresh strawberries, try the malted choc shake, try the chili cheese omelet, try the eggs sunny side up with a side of crispy hash browns & an english muffin, try the cheeseburger (omg yes) and you will ONLY THEN see what I mean. Harlo is a great place for a burger and fries or breakfast. I've been going there for many years and am never disappointed. Burgers are crisp and flavorful, fries are abundant and crunchy, and all breakfast items are cooked perfectly. Prices are very affordable. I've never had the malt, but hear that they are awesome. Surrounded by all floor to ceiling glass, the diner has a u-shaped seating area. It gets fairly busy at lunch, after work, and late night on weekends. During the day, you'll find nothing but old neighborhood Italians drinking coffee, eating lunch, and talking about stuff...not a bad thing. This is of a dying breed and definitely keeps the old times alive. Stop here and eat whenever you have a chance...it's open 24 hours. read more

Very easy to get to with plenty of parking. Harlo is open 24 hours a day which is extremely convenient, and is definitely a hot spot for post-drinking nights. The staff is extremely fun to talk to, always lively and making jokes. I've tried about half of the menu and have zero complaints about anything on there. My go-to choice would be the cheeseburgers. You sit on bar stools next to the counter and they make everything right there in front of you. The prices are very very cheap but they only accept cash. My only complaint/concern would be the cleanliness of the place, as sometimes it seems a little filthier than an establishment that serves food should be. Can't believe I never reviewed Harlo?! I've been coming here for almost 20 years. Open 24/7, Harlo has seen me at my best and worst. I'm not fond of all the changes the new owners made. Miss the jukebox and the old fries. But the 2 main guys who are usually here cooking are really nice. And they know how to make my grilled cheese very well. And no qualms about my request for my fries to be extra crispy. Just beware of the oddly tiny parking lot tucked between North Ave and a busy alley. read more

Been going here since I was a kid, my Father went there when he was a kid, my Grandparents used to go when they were teenagers. This place was owned by the same family for the majority of the time it has been opened. It got a new owner a few years back due to the lease not being renewed with the property owner and NOTHING changed. The new owner kept the same food and menu, made the same way as it always has been. He has even added to the menu some awesome breakfast items and cool seasonal shakes. Classic, greasy, GREAT, awesome food. Best after hours late night food when you've been drinking or even the next morning with a hangover. I do not recommend its something you eat daily but when you do eat here- you ll see what i mean. My favorite greasy spoon near my office. I like to stop for breakfast on my way to work on Fridays, and until the Harlo Grill I had a difficult time finding anything better than Dunkin Donuts. All the standard diner fare is available, including breakfast all day and lunch options. The milkshakes are pretty good as well. I also would recommend the coffee, because it is strong and they give you a to-go cup if you ask nicely. Plenty of parking in front and along the side.
