For under $6 dollars you can get a double cheeseburger and fries. The burger was cooked with grilled onions two slices of cheese with the works. The fries although not fresh cut they were good. Another one of these places like Hala Kahiki... I've driven by it hundreds if not thousands of times and never went in - until today. Harlo reminds me of what the Gossage Grill (now La Parillita) was up until the 90's - with the exception being that Harlo is a freestanding place and Gossage was (and the building still is) side by side with another building. As places go nowadays, it's pretty unique. An old time breakfast / lunch place with a short order cook who in this case handled everything (I was there around 3PM, it was kinda slow - might be different at busier times). The prices are fantastic - $2.05 for a cheeseburger. No, it's not the biggest cheeseburger you'll ever see, but it's pretty filling for the price. Fries - $1.95 crinkle cut that were freshly made and pretty good. A tad oily as they came out of the fryer, a shake or two then directly onto the plate. But the fryer grease was clearly fresh. Also ordered a chocolate malt - pretty good, but a little hard to detect any malt. Overall, my tab was $7.90 with tax - hard to beat that deal anywhere in today's world. Service was pretty prompt and polite. Now, normally I'd give a place like this four stars based on what I've said above - maybe even five because of the "circuses" at the place. But the one thing that was a little unsettling was that I didn't get the sense that the place was very clean or following prescribed sanitation standards. The guy behind the line never used any gloves nor was there any visible hand washing going on. I saw him take some bacon out of a drawer - it was in a box and I wonder how cold it really was inside that drawer - one of the doors on the unit didn't seem to want to stay closed. Finally, and this is what heightened my sensitivity - I discovered not one but two hairs in my food. One was on a French fry (how could that have happened - straight from the fryer as noted before!). after thinking about it a little, it might have been from a brush - kind of hope so as it looked like short body hair. The second one I saw was on my plate beneath the burger bun - looked like an eyelash maybe. So that's why the low start count. Novel place - not sure if I'll go back though - usually not too picky about sanitation, but there were too many issues here not to be concerned. read more

Good old greasy spoon, love it.everything about this place screams dive.old counter top chairs that are older than most of the patrons. I used to love Harlo when I was a kid but it's not the same. I could care less who owns the building or who makes the food, but the quality has really taken a turn for the worst lately. I mean the 1 time I loved more than anything were the cheeseburgers with extra onion & crispy fries. However, Harlo just doesn't taste like it used to for me. I've driven past this place for many months. I decided to stop in for breakfast today. I absolutely was not disappointed. My breakfast was very good and at a very reasonable price. I had 3 eggs scrambled, ham off the bone, hash browns and a side of toast. All for $5.95. And my food was ready within minutes. My friend and I decided to try Harlo Grill because we had heard good things from people in our area. We were impressed by the layout of the restaurant because we could see the chef making our food and the traditional diner decor added to our experience. We both ordered the mushroom burger with fries and it was a delicious choice! The portion was large but they had to-go boxes so we were able to take our left-overs home. The ultimate late night stop...HARLO!! Although Vern, Ma and Eddie are no longer around it is still worth it. This is one of the only diners/truck stops I know that can be jammed at 2am on a friday or saturday. This place has anything you can think of from chili to burgers to breakfast food and pie. The chili is some of the best I have had and the greasy burgers are still really good. I miss the old days of them being served on wax paper and having the grease soak through to the counter within seconds, but still it is some of the best. I am 25 years old and I have lived in Melrose Park all my life!...... and regretfully I never ate at Harlo. I passed by it everyday practically and never went in untill one beautifull summers day last year. I ordered a Double Cheeseburger with Cheese Fries and a Chocolate Shake. First of all service is really slow and they don't have decaf coffee and second wow if you are going to be cooking food the cook should not have a really bad acne problem. That does not look nice at all when you are dealing with food and touching food with your hands and no using any gloves. I feel that is just really not sanitary. read more

Not sure why so many good reviews, maybe my experience was not representative about 2am on a sunday. Food was good enough, but service was absolutely horrible at every opportunity. Also the chef/server didn't write me a check, which lead me to believe he was pocketing it and stealing from owner. He didn't seem to be owner, which would lead me to believe he was instead cheating on taxes and maybe partners. What the heck happened to this place!?!? It looks the same but the food is no where near as good as it was 4-5 yrs ago... harlos was a staple in Melrose growing up the hamburgers had a great unique flavor and everything was super fresh!! Well today i stopped in early and ordered a bacon double cheeseburger with grilled onions order of fries and chocolate shake. Well the hamburger was dry nor juicy at all they forgot the grilled onions even though i saw them cooking on the side of the grill. The chocolate shake tasted over saturated with just hershey syrup...but worst of all of the whole order was the fries.. they tasted fishey of old oil.. not fresh at all!!!
