    Mild sauce
    Jocelyn H.

I've never had fried chicken sauce that tastes like this one! I tried the mild sauce at a food truck festival. The sauce has a sweetness similar to BBQ but lighter (almost cinnamon-y) and I really liked it. The fries were good too. I think you get a good serving for the price. We got our order within a couple minutes at the food truck event.

I ordered 6 wings through Uber eats and my food was old and cold. I literally stayed 10 minutes from this location. Also, the wet wipes are completely dry. I don't understand for the life of me why this location is still open. I do not recommend thanks for wasting my time and money completely disgusted!

I can't believe I was the 'First to Review' this Harold's Chicken Shack over 17 years ago because I was a regular over twenty years prior when I was a twentysomething grad student at the University of Chicago a few blocks away. Basically I lived on Harold's fried chicken at least twice a week, especially during the bitter cold winters when it just hit the spot. I just returned to campus again this time showing Jamie W. my old haunts in Hyde Park. Of course that meant an essential return to Harold's still at the now semi-vacant strip mall at 53rd and Woodlawn. The space still looks the same with the big bulletproof order window and now with a big carousel to avoid human contact when they serve the huge bags of fried chicken. There were only two window booths for dining because they appeared to have permanently closed the rest of the dining area as well as the restroom. I directed Jamie immediately to sit at the one open booth because I needed to wait in line to make our order. I remembered I had to yell my order through the speaker if I wanted the best chance of getting what I want. And what did I order? The $7.90 Dark Half, of course, because that's what I always ordered all those years ago. Two big thighs and two drumsticks soaked with medium-hot sauce on a bed of soggy fries and topped with cole slaw and two slices of white bread soaked in the same hot sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/pqvIrJDmLD). I even ordered an extra thigh for $2 because I figured I should go for the gusto (photo: https://yelp.to/F_NPXFU5XL). It was so Harold's and so consistently good. I don't know what they do to their chicken, but the meat was so tender and juicy. Buttermilk brine, I'm guessing, and the breading was crispy-crunchy. Hey, I wasn't finished. I ordered something I'm convinced nobody else gets, the $7.40 Small Gizzards, which came with the same extras (photo: https://yelp.to/R1tEeRx9YV). First, I couldn't believe how big a small order was. Again they figured out how to make the gizzards tender with just the right amount of chew. They didn't have many beverage options, so Jamie and I shared a liter bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper, not something we would ordinarily drink. We were stuffed, and the bill came to less than $24. Yep, Harold's lived up to my expectations, and just imagine they maintain the same standards every twenty years. FOOD - 5 stars...Best. Fried. Chicken. Ever....whether it's legs, thighs, or gizzards AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...hey, we got the booth...SCORE! SERVICE - 3 stars...not as rude as I recall TOTAL - 5 stars...hope it's not another twenty years until my next visit RELATED - Exploring Chicago? For the most part my chicken was good. But some pieces didn't seem freshly cooked they seemed refried. It's usually pretty busy so I order ahead. Customer service was cool. The place seems clean and organized.

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmm Got the 1/4 chicken with mild sauce on top

The person who took my order made the pizza, placed it in the warmer, and put the salad in the refrigerator--while I was still sitting there waiting. No one bothered to call my name or let me know my order was ready. Only when it was close to closing time did the staff finally ask, "Hey, what are you waiting for?" I told them I was waiting for my order, and they casually handed it over pizza that had been sitting in the warmer for 15+ minutes and a salad pulled from the crisper. When I finally got back to my hotel, I opened the box to find basil all over the pizza, even though I had specifically requested none. Their only solution was to remake it and wait another half an hour for it. No, I'm good. Completely unacceptable. Poor communication, inattentive service, and careless disregard for my order. I am irritated and disappointed.

Therefore we left that establishment and ventured over to Harper Street. Easy seating at Bob's. Our drinks and water came to the table fast which was good because it was a very hot day. Every day they have slices from 11am to 4pm. This worked out great since our party could not decide on a pizza. I really wanted to try the Chicken Sausage pizza. For pizza I got the pepperoni slice and my friends got beer battered cheese curds and the fried pickles. Both appetizers were great. Really appreciated the thinly sliced pickles. The waitress was very nice and the Manger was too. Learned that the pizza dough is made with beer versus water. All in all a good experience. I would suggest eating here if in the area and I plan on checking out their other Chicago-land location.

Upon placing my order and it being about 30 minutes from closing the food was kept at a minimum. This was in my favor as all was being cooked as ordered and nothing just sitting under some heat lamps or refried. I was only parked around the corner and when I got back to the car, they were piping hot. You know one of those when you take a bite you got your mouth open because you are afraid to bite. On that journey, I had the chance to visit 5 Rabanitos at 1301 E. 53rd St. in Hyde Park. This spot is part of a popular local group with multiple locations across Chicago. I was told to make a reservation, which I did, but we were seated right away. The restaurant is mid-sized, with an open view of the kitchen, and the colorful murals on the walls really add to the atmosphere. Our waitstaff was friendly, attentive, and very accommodating. My brother and sister had been there several times before, but this was my first visit, and I was focused on trying their vegetarian options. I ordered two veggie tacos with rice and black beans, along with a tofu taco, and I have to say it was delicious. I absolutely inhaled my food. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. My family enjoyed their meals as well, and from what I've heard, their meat and chicken dishes are also great if that's what you're into. If you're looking for a solid taco spot with good vegetarian options, I'd definitely recommend giving 5 Rabanitos a try. 4 out of 5 stars.

The veggie tacos were unexceptional and needed to be dressed up with the bottled sauces at the table. The tamal was bland, though the pieces of fried plaintain that came with it were delicious. Also ordered fried plantains and chips & salsa from the appetizer section: the plantains were very flavourful, while the chips were unremarkable. The chocolate abeulita horchata was light and tasty - almost like a thin, spiced glass of chocolate milk. The regular horchata was also tasty but a little too sweet. The Mexican flan has a very strong coffee flavour, though the main drawback was the excessive sweetness that masked its lovely texture. The churritos with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce were delicious and beautifully presented. Service was fantastic, and our waitress was incredibly attentive to our needs and dietary preferences. The ambience is pretty: the walls are works of art in themselves. The beautifully painted map of Mexico was both interesting and educational. Seating is very tight, and it seemed like they had tried to pack in as many tables as possible into a small space. Do not expect much privacy as a diner. Overall, a good option for vegetarians, though I'm not sure to what extent they accommodate vegans. This is easily my favourite Mexican restaurant in Hyde Park, though better Mexican food is to be found elsewhere in the city including, I have been told, the restaurant's Pilsen location.

This is Jerk Yard's second location, following the success of their beloved original in Hyde Park--and yes, it brings the same delicious taste and chill island vibes that made the first one such a favorite. Consistency is everything, and they've nailed it again. Let's talk food: the jerk chicken is juicy, smoky, and seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of heat. You know how some places say "jerk" but really mean "barely spiced"? Not here. This is the real deal. I paired it with their coconut rice and sweet plantains--absolutely chef's kiss. The plantains were golden, soft, and caramelized just right. Portions are generous, the packaging is on point (perfect for takeout), and the flavors? Unmatched. The team clearly puts love into every plate. And while the new location is in a digital food hall, it still feels like Jerk Yard--welcoming, flavorful, and full of good energy. Whether you've been rocking with them since Hyde Park or you're new to the brand, this South Loop spot is a must-visit. Pro tip: if the oxtail is on the menu, do yourself a favor and get it.
