So my old go-to shop closed down. This place is close by and rated well on yelp so I took my car there for its annual inspection. Went ok. Not a bad first interaction. It was discovered that I needed rear brake pads. Scheduled it, had it done. Not so long after the brake pad replacement I noticed a rattle that I couldn't quite pinpoint. Brought the car by the shop and asked them to check right rear passenger side for anything lose or that might need to be replaced. That's where the sounds were coming from. Was assured by the shop that the end links in the back needed replacement. Ok. Had them done. Got car, still all the sounds. Brought the car back. Waited all day to hear what was up. Texted. Texted again. Finally, "front end links weak. Repair?" I said no as I wasn't confident that that was problem and would do it myself if need be. Guy then immediately calls me. Says they already did it. Problem fixed. Won't charge you but you know, drive it around next time you come back, take care of me. Miffed, but ok. Still all the sounds! Months go by. I'm trying to hunt this thing down. I replace the motor mount that was bad. No luck, but it needed replacement anyway. Did stabilizer bar bushings (cheap attempt that could have been problem). No dice. Decide I'm going to check out the brakes that were done months ago. BINGO. Turns out they used 2 outer pads instead of one each inner & outer pads on one of the wheels. Outer pads do not have spring on them to keep the pad in place and not bounce around creating a racket that's very embarrassing and annoying to drive around with. Shop created the problem I've spent months and hundreds trying to fix. Threw money (parts and labor) at the problem vs actually diagnosing something and verifying that their "repairs" solved the problem. Go somewhere else. read more

There's a reason this place has all 5-star reviews (as of this writing). Here's one anecdote: About a year ago I brought my car in. Something was wrong with the steering. I thought I had checked the steering fluid, but apparently that was too complicated for me. The guys at Harry's walked out to the street, ran a couple of tests, filled up the steering fluid, and that was it. Fixed. "What do I owe you?" I asked. He shook his head: nothing. I knew I had found an honest mechanic. I've since sent others there and the guys not only fix the car, they also explain to you what it is they've done and show you on your car -- with pride. It's like walking into some sort of weird Twilight Zone where mechanics undercharge and over-care. I'd give them 6 stars if I could. read more

After asking a number of friends about a good local mechanic for my newly purchased 1992 Volvo 240, one friend, with an old Jeep Cherokee, told me that this place "changed her life." Same here. I've had to seek out their services twice now, and I find them to be unfailingly honest, friendly, and wholly reliable. As a woman who knows nothing about cars, I often find mechanic garages to be alienating; I feel like I'm walking into a masculine world where I'm treated in a sexist manner: as that stereotypical "woman" who is to be talked down to because she knows nothing. I feel none of this at Harry's. They are willing to take tons of time to explain everything to me; they keep the old parts they took out in order to explain, using visual aids, what went wrong and how they fixed it. Not trustworthy! Based on the great reviews, I thought to give them a try and fix a flat there. They claimed that I had to replace my tire because of the position of the nail on the tire. They also gave me a really high quote for the new tire (~200$ for 80$ tire). Luckily after waiting for 30 minutes for them to get the tire, they told me that they don't have the tire size in their warehouse. Then I went to a real tire shop who just fixed my flat for $15 in less than 10 minutes. read more

Harry's rules. This shop has a ton of great, great reviews on the Car Talk website, which is how I found them. My car (95 Volvo 850) had been overheating and my then-mechanic (a place in Manhattan that is convenient to my apartment but heinously overpriced) misdiagnosed the problem and charged me $400 (!) to change the thermostat and temperature sensor. When I drove away the car was running like absolute shit and it promptly overheated, less than 3 miles from their shop. I had it towed to Harry's who diagnosed the problem as a blown head gasket, a hugely expensive repair. Harry's mechanic Romaine (sp?) told me that since Volvo engines are made of aluminum they have a tendency to warp and that even if they repaired the head gasket it was not unlikely that the car would start overheating again before too long. As an alternative, they proposed major surgery. i.e. replacing the entire engine with a salvaged engine. Since my car has 4 new tires, perfect tranny, good brakes and clean exterior and interior, it made sense to go this route. He explained that they would change the timing belt, water pump, all gaskets and seals, spark plugs etc and give me a 90 day warranty. They also took all the good parts from the old blown engine (like the new thermostat and temp sensor that the other shop had replaced) and transferred them to the "new" engine. Considering that it costs $400-500 to just have a timing belt changed and another $100 plus to get a water pump done, paying $1800 to get--in effect--a new engine, sounded like a more than reasonable deal. When I asked what their hourly rate was, I was told "we don't charge hourly, we charge by the job". When the job was done (in record time) it turned out that there was an additional gasket required that they hadn't banked on. They only charged me for the part, and waived the labor. This repair was done on May 4 and to date I've put close to a 1000 miles on the "new" engine and it runs like a champ. I like the way these guys do things and their prices are very reasonable. A real find. Incidentally, Harry's shop is a very modest looking place (my old mechanic in the city had a beautiful shop that looked clean enough to eat off the floors). Harry's is funky, dark, and dirty, with old parts and other shop detritus lying around. But they look good where it counts: in the quality of the work and what they charge to do it. I've been going to Harry's for the past 2 years b/c my 2 beat up cars are always having one issue after another. There were 2 separate times where I thought I had issues with my car and after further inspection, they said I just needed to drive my car more. any other mechanic would have bs'd some excuse to charge me but these guys just let it go. In my world, that is trust and that is why i am willing to drive all the way from NJ, suffer through manhattan traffic and go all the way to bklyn to give these guys business. read more

I write on Yelp VERY little, only when I come across something extremely amazing or poor. All I'm saying is Harry's is THE place to go for auto service and repair in Northern Brooklyn. They are all extremely helpful, nice and will explain what they did do and what you should do in the future while not trying to sell you something prematurely or something you don't need at all. Absolutely amazing! I've been bringing my 2005 Mercedes Station Wagon here for a few months now for inevitable repairs. Kevin is always very honest and does what he can to help you out. I understand their "inspection machine" only works on Monday's and Friday's. Must be some machine. Can't stand places like this. Nearly impossible to even drive up to. If you talk to someone, no way to know what they are going to say, let alone do. I've been to Harry's five or six times and I'm consistently amazed at their quality of service. I've gone to them for everything from a routine inspection and oil change to an oil pump replacement that required dismantling the entire engine, and no matter how big or small the job is it's done with equal attention. They remember me, they remember my car, and the last time I went, no joke, they had even washed it inside and out for no charge. Their prices are unreasonably low but this is one place where you get more than you pay for. They never do work without calling me to explain the diagnosis and quote the cost. They never try to upsell me into getting other repairs done. The only time I've had to wait more than a few hours was when they had to order a part. The staff at Harry's were friendly, courteous and knowledgeable; the mechanic Kevin took the time to thoroughly assess, diagnose and explain what types of repairs were necessary (and the ones that could wait) all in a non condescending manner. After speaking with him, I was able to decide whether or not I should sell or keep my car. My trusty old Honda started running a fever -- radiator fan busted. Especially since I have a lot of driving to do the next few weeks, I figured I'd try these neighborhood guys on a Tuesday morning. They also suggested pulling the condenser fan (they said a previous mechanic had installed a used one) -- $395, ready by 1PM that same day. When I left, I had some misgivings about letting them upsell me the condenser fan, but it was 10AM and since I had stuff to do late in the day, I was satisfied even if I thought I was paying too much. At 12:45 Romain called me to tell me it was fixed. At 1:30 I showed up and paid. Romain said he'd seen that one of the arms was losing its cover (? I think he meant a bushing) and that he'd fixed it so it wouldn't squeak anymore. Picked up the key and went to get the Accord under BQE where I saw another guy moving cars around -- I thanked him again but said I wasn't sure I should have gotten the other fan replaced too. He shook his head, repeated it was about to fail, and said I'd notice the difference in the A/C right away. Sure enough, the A/C was much smoother than it had been before, and the weird squeak that had been bothering me the last few months was gone. Very happy customer here. read more

These guys have mastered the aw-shucks hardworking immigrant routine. Please check my profile to verify how thoroughly I hate writing bad reviews. Lesson to Yelpers: read some reviews, not just the average rating, with something like cars. I'm sure they've done a bunch of routine stuff for people and had it go fine. I honestly don't even know where to begin, but suffice it to say he upsold me a bunch of stuff, parked it outside and got me tickets that he refused to pay, and sent me on the road with an inspection sticker in a car that could have gotten me killed. 3 separate specialists then told me it wasn't safe for the golf course let alone the road. When I brought it back before getting further opinions, because something was rickety (indicating he hadn't even checked/driven it), he said "oh thats a welding issue we dont do that." Kevin was completely defiant, and his workers nasty and disrespectful. When I pointed out there is potential criminal liability for sending a car that dangerous on the road, he quickly starting talking (partial) refund. Seriously, forget about the mechanical stuff--I bring my first car to you, tell me Im a novice and am trusting you, will pay for the things you say the car needs, I ask them to put my license plate on, they proceed to park it on public property and get a ticket because in NY you need one on both sides of the car, which they reported to me like "Yeah asshole, everyone knows that"--except apparently the car professional and consultant who doesn't even tell me he's parking it outside. It was the smallest element of the financial ride he took me for but just the most jaw-dropping, considering it was explicit I was paying for consulting and not just parts. read more

Great shop, fair prices. I'm a former mechanic that no longer works on my own cars, and I was impressed with the honesty and speed of the guy that worked on my car. In and out with an oil change and brake pads within an hour. He even swapped the new wiper blades that I brought in and filled the washer reservoir without charge and with a smile. My 2002 Durango died on the Belt Parkway after years of procrastinating about replacing the catalytic converter. That mistake in judgment then led to a host of other issues within the engine. Kevin helped me coordinate getting the truck to the shop. He then took care of it in a very personal, accountable, and trustworthy manner, that you often long for at the dealerships. He also did it at a price that you would long for at the dealership. I had a great experience at Harry's. I thought my catalytic converter needed to be replaced and let them know. I also needed my car repair to happen quickly as I had to take my dog to the vet in 2 days. Kevin prioritized my repair and saved me $200 even though he ordered the replacement catalytic converter, as he realized it was an issue involving broken connections to the part but that the catalytic converter itself was fine. I wouldn't have known the difference but sincerely appreciated his integrity in replacing only that which was faulty and charging me less. I would definitely go back. read more

I come from a very small town where there is only one Volvo repair shop so when I came to New York City I was not sure where I would get my car serviced. The team at Harry's couldn't complete the inspection the first time around due the fact my car had not completed a drive cycle - whatever that means. Bought a used Audi A4 on Ebay. Got it back to Brooklyn from PA and took it to these guys for a tune up. Been back for a few random repairs. They traced my slow oil leak to cylinder head gasket. It had become very brittle. Since they replaced that, no more oil leak. My exhaust was making noise and looking under the car you could see the Flex Pipe was the issue. Had some holes in it. They replaced that part and goodbye exhaust noise. Been very happy with these guys. I appreciate the text updates and absence of $urprises. One time they took my car through the local car wash as a courtesy when my car was fairly dirty. They also work on my friends old Dodge Dakota truck and he is very happy with their work as well. read more

CON ARTIST ALERT! I brought my jeep here because it is conveniently located near me and had good reviews. Water pump and fan pulley needed to be replaced because it was causing the belt to squeak and milage wise it was about that time. They first replaced all other pulleys and charged me near $1000 to do it only to have to come back a week later and fix the actual problem, wasting tons of money to fix non existing problems. A few months later I got new fender flares for the jeep and decided to give them another shot. After all it was an easy job. I came to pick it up only to realize they had broken one of the 4 fenders. Rather than being honest, they used Bondo and some spray paint to cover up their mistake. It was literally the first thing I noticed when I picked up the car. After spotting the problem and confronting them about trying to pull one over on me, they promised to right the problem. They asked me to return the fenders that they broke for a refund before realizing this was their responsibility. It took them a month to right this problem. They did detail my car to make up for their mistake and I thought we were all good until I took my car in the next time. I dropped it off on a Thursday because one of the door locks broke. I discussed with him prior to bringing it in to please let me know if he wasn't going to have the time because I needed the car over the weekend. He of course called me near the end of the day Friday saying he wasn't even gonna have time to look at it. Rather than an apology or trying to explain, I get a backhanded text about people falling out of cars. It made no sense so I picked up my vehicle and took it to a reputable and respectable mechanic who doesn't con or rip people off. A good mechanic values his business and takes pride in his work. These guys are super. You never have the feeling that they are ripping you off or pushing you around. They save every part they remove to show you when you come to pick up your car and explain why it had to come out, plus the packaging from the new parts they put in. Prices are reasonable, oil changes cost about 1/2 what I've paid at other places in the New York area. And I love the way our poor old station wagon runs after a tune-up. They've also been very accommodating about timing, even repairing my car while I wait. I wholeheartedly recommend Harry's Auto Repair--I still drive out here, even though we've now moved back to Manhattan and just getting over the Queensboro bridge is a chore. read more

I chose Harry's because of the good reviews on yelp and I am totally satisfied with the service and repair. A fellow named Romain serviced my toyota corolla which needed a new caliper, rotors and pads, and he did so blissfully while radiating good easy going energy. I got a nice view of my car from underneath and the areas that needed repair were clearly pointed out to me and my questions were patiently answered.
