My mom and I wanted to go to Hartigan's for their black cherry ice cream. On our way there, we got a tornado warning telling us to take shelter. Without hesitation.... we still went to Hartigan's...! I won't recommend getting ice cream in the time of a tornado warning to ANYONE (please be safe) but that's just how great Hartigan's ice cream is! We werent the only ones there when we arrived, so clearly there are more like us who live by Hartigan's. The shop is located a bit farther down Central St from the other bakeries and cafes, but it is definitely worth it! My mom always always gets their black cherry if it is available, and I like to go back and forth between their variety of chocolate flavors. There are some booths and additional seating inside for customers! Outside, there are some picnic tables and benches for seating as well. It is street parking only. And bathrooms are for employees only. For two people, i always bring in $10 in cash. It is a bit on the pricier side for sure (esp if you get them in waffle cones), but the ice cream tastes fresh, never has ice crystals, and is so smooth. It's always so nice seeing people of all ages there every time, all there to enjoy ice cream :) Warning: their waffle cones have leaked on me a few times so beware! Given the single origin sourced dairy is used to make the ice cream, I had expectations that the ice cream will have a strong, forward dairy flavor -- similar or if not better than Oberweis. I ate 3 scoops of the following ice cream: - Big Muddy (dark chocolate ice cream with salty caramel ribbon and brownie chunks) - Daily Grind (coffee ice cream with caramel ribbon and chocolate covered espresso pieces) - Sea Turtle (chocolate and caramel ice cream) Of the three, the best IMO was the Sea Turtle, where the flavors itself did not overpower the dairy. I liked the flavor ideas of the other two, but the flavors overpowered the creamy dairy flavor. I'll stick with Oberweis for now until I find something better in Chicagoland area. read more

Super friendly staff. I go there for their iced americanos cause I work across the street and definitely need a caffeine buzz in the afternoon. There is a coffee shop nearby but the staff there is not very friendly and they have definitely over charged me. I've had hartigans ice cream a couple times and it's really good but I've had to cutback on the sugar lately. Their espresso is delicious and the kids who work here are nice and hard working. I always forget they don't like taking cards for small transactions but I really appreciate that they have accommodated me a few times. I'll just have to remember to take out cash from now on. Located just west of downtown Evanston (near Wilmette), Hartigan's is the place to be on a hot sweltering summer afternoon. It has a pleasant, "homey" feel to it with friendly service and plenty of choices to beat the heat and keep you cool. The entrance door is kept closed, as the shop is air-conditioned, and there are a few tables inside for customers. Very reasonable prices for their generous portions and good quality. Let me start by saying I love supporting local and always do. However, the price tag at Hartigans is INSANE. I got one scoop but split with two flavors...for $8!!! Yes, you read that correctly...one scoop costs $8 if you want two flavors. Come on...you can buy Cedar Crest ice cream (same brand as Hartigans sells) at Woodmans for $2.99 a pint! The prices are so crazy here that I'm afraid it will deter customers...it's deferred me that's for sure :( So sad about this as it used to be a fun place to stop for an inexpensive scoop. read more

If you love a place that smells like cinnamon and sugar, even a block before you reach the Shoppe, you'll love Hartigans. I was introduced to this place by a friend and enjoyed a lovely Friday evening over delicious ice cream, froyo and easy going chatter. You'll see families, high schoolers, kids I their baseball uniforms come here on a typical Friday night. The staff are very young (maybe the neighborhood high schoolers) but they are pleasant and patient, enough so that you can try as many favors as you want before making a decision. They are really great with kids here, and outside there are picnic bench tables to enjoy the warm weather. There is a parking lot across the street with angled parking and plenty of street parking along the residential tree-lined streets. I got a kid's single scoop on a sugar cone ( which is actually the perfect size for me, post-dinner) but there are a wealth of other sizes and cones to choose from- their waffle cones seem to be very popular. The featured flavor that I got-the name escapes me now- was a caramel ice cream with salted caramel ribbons and slivers of almonds. REALLY, really good, with a generous amount of almonds for a good crunch. Their flavors here are really unique, especially their Mackinac Island Fudge flavors, one with the normal fudge and another with mint. Having been to Mackinac and having tried their fudge there a while back... I knew their ice cream would be quality. I'll have to order that next time. This is a great neighborhood "shoppe" with great flavors, a small hometown feel, all the happy feelings of summertime nostalgia and a satisfying place to get your sweet tooth fix! read more

Also, the staff isn't that enthusiastic about customers; there were three people there and the one who helped me was begrudging and the other two were psyched to walk away. They are not covid careful -albeit we are in delta variant territory and we have ambiguous guidelines. I was excited this location still sells ice cream. Hartigan's is a classic ice cream shop, of which we have very few around here. I've been coming here since college; thankfully I don't live too far across the Evanston-Chicago border, so I stop in a few times per summer. I love their special sundae concoctions. This is a drawback in a way, however, because I'm always buying sundaes which means that I almost never have plain ice cream. They make their own and it's frickin' great. They have some neat, creative flavors such as Pirate Booty and Mint Cookie. Also, they post nutritional information for their ice cream, which somehow is 50% less in fat and calories than brands such as Ben & Jerry's. I don't understand how this is possible. The cookie that they use for the cookie sundae is not that great, but the brownie sundae is excellent. Their hot fudge is very, very good. I wonder if they make their own. This place is open 11-11 every day, which are very generous hours given the neighborhood (the entire length of Central Street in Evanston, especially this western half, is shuttered after 5-6 pm). Hartigan's does such a booming business that they were out of nuts today thanks to their brisk sales over the weekend. I was there for about twenty minutes and saw about thirty people in and out the door. This place is HUGE for local families with little kids. read more

Not bad! I suggest you get a double scoop since it's pricey for one. I liked the ice cream and they have a ton of flavors, I think I sampled 1/4 of them! Also if you're clumsy, I suggest get it in a cup because they have small cones. When I got double scoop on a small cone, I had to lick it fast because they put more then the cone can handle... but I don't mind more ice cream! I'd stop here if I was in the Evanston area, but not something I would go out of my way for. Also, only meter parking outside until evening. read more

Ahh, Hartigan's. A classic of north Evanston, usually ran by high school kids, and filled with families and couples. Great place to go on a warm night and pick up some ice cream. Especially nice if you're walking distance. I can't speak for their shakes or sundae's but their ice cream is super fluffy, very creamy and sweet. Birthday Cake ice cream made by Cedar Crest Creamery has held the number one spot for my favorite ice cream for many years. I have been known to get such a fierce craving for this flavor of ice cream that, on a whim, I'd make the 40 something minute drive from Hyde Park to Evanston (that is only after checking to make sure the flavor wasn't in stock at Medici on 57th). I even had a friend once try to mail it to me in the mail without the proper packaging for frozen foods. Shout out the mailman who still delivered it all soggy and wet from the inside! I just recently revisited Hartigan's and found it to be as nice as I remember with excellent customer service and a nostalgic old school ice cream shoppe feel. I don't remember it being so pricey for two regular scoops though. There are plenty of flavors and sundaes to please every ice cream lover. Another flavor to try is Peaches N Cream when it's available for the summer season. Sadly, Birthday Cake didn't hold the same "wow" factor on my taste buds as it once did and I think it's fair to say I'll only stop by now if I'm in the area. read more

There are a few booths and cafe tables with chairs as well as outdoor benches to sit and enjoy your ice cream. The guys behind the counter were friendly and patient enough to take orders directly from the little boys I was with, which I thought was cute. They offer child-sized cones which are perfect for the little ones, and my big-girl cone hit the spot too. Their wide range of flavors features monthly specials as well as several choices that are sugar-free or fat-free. I tried the strawberry swirl (both fat & sugar-free) and it was creamy and delicious. I love Hartigans! Marcia the owner is one of the sweetest women I have ever met, she truely cares about her business & has put her whole heart into it. The ice cream is to die for! They get special flavors in based on the season too, mmmm apple pie & pumpkin cheesecake for thanksgiving! My favorite is a drink (... Something sunrise... not tequila ;) Its sherbert & Seltzer and maybe some lemon or lime juice? I foget but its the PERFECT cool-off and wake up treat! Ice cream was great however this is not a covid conscious place. The staff do not wear gloves when handling food, such as scooping ice cream and holding cones in hand. There are signs that indicate that gloves and mask are worn by staff, which is clearly not being followed. Masks are being worn below the nose which defeats the purpose.
