It's pretty small inside, there are only a few tables. A server comes to your table to place your order, which I feel like never happens at ice cream shops anymore! The menu is huge! There were multiple sections to banana splits, sundaes, and shakes. We decided to go with something simple. My son ordered 2 scoops of cookies n cream ice cream (with sprinkles of course) and I got moose tracks! The ice cream is the real deal. We heard that Margie's Candies had some seriously good sundaes, so obviously we had to check the place out. (The fact that the joint's been around for over 100 years doesn't hurt either.) It's a small restaurant but we managed to snag a cozy table near the back. We'd already spent most of the day eating, so we decided to share the Atomic Fudge Sundae. It's a fairly enormous concoction. I found it interesting that the hot fudge was served on the side, but it's actually pretty smart because you get control how much (or how little) sauce you get. The ice cream is the highlight. It's creamy and rich, and it's got a really nice flavor, too. The hot fudge was less impressive, but that might be because I had already eaten a Ghirardelli sundae earlier in the day and their hot fudge just can't be beat. Tonight's experience was not as good as in the past. I still like Margie's but here's my review: Popped in tonight craving some ice cream. Margie's never disappoints for the multitude of sweets available. Lots of two seater tables lend themselves to even late night date night shared sundaes. I got a raspberry and fudge sundae tonight with cherry ice cream. Overall, it was good and the raspberry sauce was so yummy. The only negative is that this Sundae is $14 and I really only wanted one scoop (junior sundae). Two scoops is just too much at 10 o'clock at night. But the counter guy tried multiple times to upsell me to the full two scoop Sundae, telling me that he was going to charge me only one dollar less to get the one scoop sundae so I just might as well order the big one. So I just gave in. But I didn't enjoy the upsell experience, and that just feels like too much money for a sundae I only wanted to eat half of. read more

I live in Edgewater, and haven't been to Margie's in over 15 years, but I recall it being iconic and memorable. My friend called and suggested icecream, and I suggested we go to Margie's! We show up at the Montrose location and this young girl shouts that orders are taken in the front! We're like, OK. My friend ordered 2 scoops on a cone. He got his order and went outside to sit on patio. I ordered a turtle sundae and he asked if it was for here or takeout. I told him my friend was already sitting outside. The same girl with attitude told the cashier that "they're already outside." She rolled her eyes because I gathered she'd not be providing full service and therfore not getting a tip. When she did bring my turtle, it was NOT what I ordered. It had bananas, butterscotch, and chopped peanuts. No caramel, no pecans. She didn't say something along the lines of "enjoy" or anything. Plonked the "turtle" down and walked away. Her little attitude will not keep people coming back. I certainly won't ever go there again! Zero hospitality standards! read more

They serve a variety of flavors from the staple vanilla and chocolate to more intricate and rotating flavors like barky pretzel and turtle cheesecake. Prices are very fair considering how everything has gone up lately. A banana split that comes with 3 scoops of your choice, whipped cream, hot fudge, and a cherry on top is around 12 before taxes and tip. When my wife and I split one each of their premade sets of spoon and napkin comes with a single vanilla wafer wrapped in as a compliment. The interior still resemobles that old fashioned dessert shops of back in the day. It can be very narrow inside. They now have an outdoor patio for the warmer seasons and have been getting very busy. The outside is dog friendly. There is both paid and free parking in the area. Seating can be very limited but I recommend getting your ice cream to go and enjoy wandering around the neighborhood or malt row. read more

They presciently opened here, right next to the Montrose station on the Brown Line ... you can get off the "L" and grab some ice cream as you exit ... very smart. This is an old-fashioned kind of place, and they offer all the usuals: ice creams, shakes, sundaes, banana splits, and malts ... if it is ice cream related, they probably have it. More ice cream flavors than you would expect from a candy store. That's because they have been making and serving ice cream for a century or so. This is a satellite location, and it's been open about 15 years. I prefer this location because it's got roomier seating. Staff is friendly. Prices are very good for Chicago ice cream shops. But it's the hot fudge that is knock your socks off great. Never had a bad flavor of their ice cream. Coconut is especially good and a little unusual for most shops, so I probably order it more because you can't get that everywhere. Cherry vanilla is another good option. I also can't provide any kind of update about their business with regards to COVID-19, because I haven't been eating out since then. They're located right outside the Montrose brown line stop, so it's an easy place to get to via public transportation. Anyway, my favorite is the ice cream. They have delicious banana splits, multiple varieties of them, even. They make huge serving sizes, so I tend to share when I'm getting a treat here. You can also get your ice cream to go, which I often do since I live under a mile away. They have several tables outside which is great during the spring and summer months.
