I was lucky enough to go to Haru Ichiban last Saturday night for a friend's birthday. She was in the mood for a Japanese style Grilled Steak. He was not prepared but was already heading into Duluth with US hostage in his car. What a ride!! Never again, I'll drive us thank you!! When I realized that we were going to wing it and hope for the best, I called a computer friend (I really need to upgrade my phone service after this experience) and we Yelped over the phone and found this spot very near our area in Duluth on Satellite near The Melting Pot. If I could give 4 1/2 stars, I would in a heartbeat. The only missing thing was not steering us to the "not to miss items" that I am sure I will HAVE to try next time .... and there most definitely be a next time. The 4 of us arrived at 8pm Saturday night and were seated right away. It was close to full but they were happy to have us and it showed. The service from our first moment inside the doors was patient, attentive and knowledgable. The menu is extensive (translate= HUGE) and we were "late-day - missed-lunch" kind of hungry. Our server (don't remember her name) helped us make good decisions based on our personal likes and dislikes through her great questions and steered us to the best items for us without too much reading and thinking. Once we ordered, the food never stopped flowing. We had many servers and all were wonderful in every way. For appetizers we got Jumbo Shrimp Shumai, Calamari, Tempura Fried Jumbo Shrimp, and Wasabi Shumai. OMFG! Everything was perfectly portioned for us 4 and timed so that we could ALL eat hot food as it hit the table and really get to enjoy it and then savour it. I loved everything and would order each and every item again and again. I looked forward to every new plate that arrived at our table! I was never disappointed.....JOY!!!! Having lived in South Florida for years, I always thought that Rock Shrimp was not for me. I publicly admit now that I was totally wrong. I am now, officially a Rock Shrimp fan and will be for life - especially when prepared with such care and precision. YUM times 10!! They really know what they are doing and how to present it. Lucky for me and my dining friends!!! Our small table was never overcrowded or cluttered, as all appetizers were fresh, hot and well timed. Our Miso soup came as the last app plates were lifted..... hot, fresh and lovely. I don't normally care for tofu but could not resist the luscious ever-so-fresh chunks that they incorporated into that beautiful broth with fresh veggies. The Entrees were not more than minute after the Miso course. was cleared 2 of my companions ordered the Garlic Steak medium rare. It was a thin (1/2") cut of high end ribeye cooked absolutely perfectly on a well seasoned flat top accompanied with an amazing (also flat top cooked) fried mashed potatoes and beautifully seasoned broccoli. Perfection on a plate. Not one gram of food went to waste. I would have stabbed my own husband of 25 years for another bite if he didn't just give it to me!!!!. I would absolutely order this for myself next time,,,,,,Homer Simpson style moan inserted here....Duh-oh!! add copious drool.............. I ordered the (Shrimp) Tempura and Chicken and our other friend ordered the (Shrimp) Tempura and Salmon. Every item on our many plates were cooked to perfection and was presented beautifully. We also got a plethora of Tempura veggies and other treats with our main course. Wow! It was all fresh, clean, perfect, and totally irresistable. Long after I was full, I still kept eating because I HAD TO as did our friends and my (never quite full before passing out) husband. I couldn't even consider dessert nor could any of my dining companions. Sadly, there were NO leftovers for the dogs. :) They never get anything: the good stuff never makes it home and the bad stuff never comes either (bad for us = bad for them). Poor neglected dogs. The closest thing to Japanese home cooking in Atlanta. Much of the sushi is Americanized - fried and/or covered with Mayo - but the kitchen items are like what my Japanese mother in law cooks. The execution is perfect - ordered a plate meal with 6-7 small items and everything was spot on. Panko breaded shrimp were yum. Prices are a bit high but the portions are giant. Haru Ichiban is one of those gems that you might not try unless you have good connections or you're hooked on yelp! Honestly, I think it says a lot when a Japanese restaurant actually has Japanese clientele... I mean really, this goes with any "foreign/ethnic" restaurant - if the natives like it, it's a good sign right!? I initially went to Haru Ichiban for their sashimi lunch deals, which I honestly think are a steal, last I recall they all range under $20 for a fairly good selection of fish (fresh too! ;D). But I have to say, I don't think their sushi/sashimi/rolls are really what Haru Ichiban is about. Yes they have an extensive menu and many times you'll be left kind of clueless as to what you should order unless you go there with a regular customer or someone who knows what they're ordering. I'm sure you'll be able to find something to suit your taste :) A lot of people I know hold Haru Ichiban's ramen as their standard - and though I still have mixed feelings about some of their ramen, I have to say their Tonkotsu ramen is probably one of their best I've had. The broth is creamy without it being too greasy/heavy - there's a really good balance of richness in the flavor. (those of you who are ramen egg lovers - unfortunately a lot of their ramen's don't come w/ a boiled egg :( ). Overall I think Haru Ichiban is good all around, I wouldn't say anything is absolutely stellar or a must try since they don't particularly "specialize" on any dish in particular, which can be a good/bad thing depending on what you come here to eat. In my book, I think it's a good thing bc it gives me the opportunity to try different types of dishes without them necessarily being mediocre. This is legit Japanese food, at least from what I can see. Most importantly, it's delicious! We had Ramen, Okonomiyaki and Onigiri but we eyed the food at other tables and it all looked amazing. This is one of our favorite sushi places. They have a good selection of rolls, fresh fish, hamachi kama, ramen noodle bowls, and yummy katsu don. The wait staff is so nice....there's usually a line on Friday / Saturday for dinner, but it is definitely worth the wait. Every time I come to this restaurant, service is always disappointing, it makes me so sad because the food here is so good. There is always usually a short wait, unless you go when they first open. I always wait at least 10 minutes before anyone greets the table and always have to wave for their attention for anything(extra napkins, sauce, the bill... anything) because the servers never return to the table. More recently, the servers have lacked to refill my water glass (and I drink my water awfully slow). The food however is consistently delicious. That's all I have to say about them. read more

I love how I feel at ease knowing it's actual japanese chefs and sushi chefs making my food here. At many other Japanese restaurants I've been to there lacked the authentic part. I had the calamari for my appetizer and the special tonkotsu ramen as my meal. Everything was spectacular. Slow but friendly service. Ramen was OK but the sushi roll was fantastic! Came here on a Wednesday night as a party of 3. The place was pretty packed, so we were told the wait time would be 5-10 minutes. There wasn't really much of a waiting area, just a lone bench by the front door when you walked in. We were seated quickly, but it took a good 10 minutes before our waitress came to the table. She brought hand towels and a small plate of appetizers (edamame and what tasted like some type of marinated radish) for each person, which I thought was a nice touch. I enjoyed nibbling on the appetizers while I decided what to order from the massive menu. All of us decided to order bowls of ramen and a sushi roll to split. Tonkatsu ramen - The ramen came in a big bowl. The broth was rich, creamy and hearty. The flavors were great, but it was a bit too salty for me, so I wasn't able to finish the soup. The thinly-sliced pork melted in my mouth and was delicious, but only included a few slices. There were some veggies in the ramen, which were pretty good but also scarce. The bowl included a decent amount of noodles. The ramen itself was soft, but I prefer mine a little more al dente. Tantan ramen - Clear broth with a little bit of kick to it. Also pretty tasty. Oishi roll - Awesome! The salmon sashimi on it was a generous portion, fatty, and fresh. Paired with avocado, everything melted in my mouth. The eel sauce on it was a bit on the heavy side, but overall the roll was delicious. Definitely more impressed with the sushi roll than the ramen. Next time I'll probably stick with sushi and sashimi. I saw some people order various sushi/sashimi gozen, which looked amazing! Will probably try that next time I come back. The service was friendly. Our waitress always had a smile and was very attentive but not overbearing. We stayed and chatted for a while after we finished our dinner. The staff didn't try to rush us out by slapping us with the bill. In fact, we had to wave someone down to get the bill. The bill came out to $45 for 3 bowls of ramen and a sushi roll. Haru Ichiban is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the Duluth area! I would say that the atmosphere has a more traditional feel to it. It's not a huge place. They have a room with about 10-12 tables and then another room that has about the same. It's very clean and family-friendly. Every time that I've been there, I got seated pretty quickly. Make sure you order yourself some FREE green tea. It's yummy and comes in cute cups. They have a wide variety of options on the menu. There's a ton of traditional Japanese dishes, ramen, udon noodles, and also a large sushi option. Every time that I've gotten sushi, it's been really good. My favorite roll is the the Snow White Roll. Sometimes I get a bowl of Tan Tan Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen and I've always enjoyed that too. The service is very quick. The ladies who have served me are SO nice. The food comes out pretty quickly every time that I've been there. The price is somewhat normal restaurant prices and varies depending on what you order. Owners, you better read this for your own business long run! And hopefully this opinion can help other customers as well before they go there. First of all, your food price is way~~~~~ over priced compared to its quality! I can buy so much more and delicious food from other restaurants compare to you. Especially when you order something that comes with rice, rice will be more than 1/2 of your food portion, meat is very dry and the noodle is way over cooked! As many of you already know, rice is very cheap. After I received my takeout order, I was extremely unsatisfied with the quality of the food compared to what I paid. I cursed out as soon as I open the to go box no kidding.. The tempura was all soggy and for my salad, they forgot to pack the dressing. Even little thing as that, they just don't give a s**t. So basically, they think that they can make money by just charging customers so much. If I had ordered Chinese food, then I could get at least two more entries. Secondly, they charge you more when you order for pick up. Later, I realized that I paid $3 more compared to the price they show from their own website. After moving to Georgia from LA, one of the first places we looked for was an authentic Japanese ramen restaurant. After searching on yelp, we decided to try this place! Needless to say, we have become regulars here. We went today and the waitress asked us where we had been and that it was too long... I felt special :) We have gone for lunch and dinner and have tried the sushi and ramen. My husband always gets the karage ramen (Japanese style chicken nugget) with either the tonkotsu broth or today, he got the sio broth (chicken stock with sea salt) and said it was amazing! I get the karroke ramen (potato/veggie fried patties) or the tan tan ramen (spicy with ground pork) in a tonkotsu or miso broth. Every single time we go, it's so gooooood! For lunch, you can add another side dish or rice bowl for $2-$4 and although the ramen is more than enough, we always add a mini Ten Don (fried shrimp tempura and 2 veggie bowl with a bit of sauce). My husband loves their toro so whenever it's available, he gets it. Huge portions with friendly and quick service. I guess that's why we have become regulars. By the way, if you get the karage or karroke ramen, ask for the chicken nuggets or potato patties on the side so it doesn't get soggy in the broth. read more

No thrills/frills but legit sushi spot. Everything is really, really fresh. Sashimi is served VERY COLD as its supposed to be. Good selection of udon and some solid rolls. Everything about this place screams authenticity! The service is attentive and friendly. Not a huge beer selection but a cold Sapporo on draft is all you really need here. One additional point... They put a large piece of paper on the floor under the high chair for a toddler, which is a smart move that makes the parents feel slightly better about the mess the kid will undoubtedly make. This place gives me a bad taste in my mouth before I eat any of their food. I really try to make it to their lunch time (closing time 2:30pm) I arrived good 10 minutes before their closing time which is 2:20pm, but this mean waitress with a super heavy makeup on at the cashier acting like an authority figure kicked me out, saying the last order was 5 minutes ago, which is 2:15pm. I tried to explain that I tried to drive from a long distance, but she completely ignored me afterwards. If I looked around, there are about 20 people still eating their food, and it didn't appear to matter if I place the last order anyway. It's absolutely unreasonable to kick customers who arrived before their business hour's over. I had worked in restaurant business over 10 years, and I understand they want to take a break between the shifts, and they tend not to like customers jump into the restaurant right before their closing time. But I never worked at any restaurants who kick customers out before their closing time. In the U.S., we understand that the way business works is that closing time is the time a business closes, not 15 minutes prior. Do you ever want to go to a store who say you can enter there by 2:30pm, but they will stop selling merchandise at 2:15pm??? So now, what's the definition of their closing time? Would they throw out the customers who are still eating their food after 2:30pm sharp??? As a customer, I am the reason for and source of their business. I wanted to check on their food quality before I bring my family of 13, who would easily spend $600-$700 for celebration dinner bill. I will never go to a restaurant who doesn't honor their business hours. They must have a horrible business ethics in general. Things I ordered the last three time I came: - Avocado Dome Salad - Edamame - Takoyaki -Tuna Tataki -Sashimi appertizer (4 kinds) - Grilled beef tongue - B 52 - Ty Roll - Fatty Tuna Roll -Kake Udon -Tonkatsu Ramen - Jumbo Fried shrimp -Spicy Tuna hand roll -Ika-Poppo-Yaki - Sashimi deluxe - Chicken Teriyaki Everything tasted sooo good. I would definitely recommend the AVOCADO DOME SALAD with the creamy sweet onion dressing on the side. Too much can be overwhelming. They give you a choice of crab or salmon inside the dome. The EDAMAME was good portion but they don't put salt on it. TAKOYAKI came with 6 pieces. It is fried octopus balls topped with fish flake, mayonnaise & tonkatsu sauce. DELICIOUS. TUNA TATAKI was great. Nicely seared with garlic ponzu sauce. SASHIMI APPERTIZER consist of salmon, tuna, octopus, and the last one is unknown. They had to cook the GRILLED BEEF TONGUE all the way so it was a little tough. I would not order it again. If you like spicy roll then the B52 is a must try! Inside and outside has spicy tuna and it's topped with jalapeno, eel sauce & hot sauce. Torched. The TY ROLL is amazing! On the inside there's Salmon, albacore tuna & avocado and it's smothered in masago, wasabi masago & tobiko. They put lots of fatty tuna in the FATTY TUNA ROLL. Soo fresh and tasty. The KAKE UDON is in a fish broth topped with fish cake, spinach, nori & scallion. TONKATSU RAMEN was topped with roast pork, bamboo shoot, scallion, and sesame seed. I added corn as well. They had four different soup base to chose from. Then you get to chose your noodle type and if you want to add any extra topping. JUMBO FRIED SHRIMP is deep fried panko breaded Jumbo rock shrimp with a spicy mayo and sweet chilli sauce. It's a little pricey but I order it every time. SPICY TUNA HAND ROLL is stuffed with spicy tuna and wrapped in seaweed paper. IKA-POPPO-YAKI is grilled whole squid served on a sizzling hot plate topped with mayo and fish flakes. I didn't like the sizzling hot plate because it burnt the squid and I did not like the burnt taste. SASHIMI DELUXE had ten different type of fish with two piece each. I like the variety they give you. I would recommend the CHICKEN TERIYAKI for people who don't eat sushi. It came with two chicken breast with a side of broccoli and potatoes. Big portion size. Went here with my girlfriend last week. The sashimi was delicious! We sat at the counter / sushi bar area, and the chefs were very talkative and friendly. We had a great time. The restaurant itself was not so busy, which was great because we were able to talk with the chefs and staff. We had a "jungle" or "forest" roll -- which as the name suggests is not exactly "classic" sushi (had some various sauces on it which some sushi snobs don't like). We also had a sashimi dinner, which was outstanding. It reminded me of the sushi places I went to when I lived in California. Been here a few times and have always tried something new to see what I like. Tried their spicy ramen during lunch one day and fell in love. Came back for dinner a couple weeks later and tried their sashimi appetizer and we were tearing up over how good it was. We're both big sashimi lovers and this platter was nothing short of satisfying! We both had ramen but mine didn't live up to par from when I first had it. Friend loved his because of the big portions, where as other ramen places he'd have to get extra noodles. Will definitely come back only during lunches because of their ginger side salad. I admit I'm a little biased; my friend and I wanted to celebrate the start of our internship and we chose here because her father works here. However, I do truly think Haru Ichiban deserves all 4 stars, even if their website is probably the funniest thing I've seen all week. WHERE IS ICHIBAN? Right off the Satellite Blvd exit, it's on your right, in the same shopping center as Melting Pot, Laser Tag, and Song Do BBQ. Or across the street from Cho Won's. The strip mall is a little dead, but that just means more parking for us all! THE FOOD: We started off with takoyaki, which are these delicious batter balls with pieces of octopus inside. They're topped with bonito flakes, which start to curl up because of the temperature (that's when you know it's fresh)! The exterior was crispy and the batter was goey, so it took several bites to get used to the texture but I absolutely loved them in the end. I don't normally fight over food, but I may have to for these. We also ordered the Ring of Fire roll, which was all right in terms of taste. Probably more gimmick than anything else, because they literally lit the plate on fire. Cool, but it made the sushi rice warm and stick to the plate so eating that was, pardon, a hot mess. The spicy tuna was good, maybe a little better than other places, and wasn't particularly spicy. I also got to try uni and salmon roe for the first time! Definitely try uni if you haven't. The salmon roe was good, but it wasn't for me; a little too salty even for 2 bites, and I couldn't help think of Nemo and his family... Warning: they DO put wasabi in your nigiri, and it's a sizeable amount. Uni already has quite a delicate flavor, so I was really put off by the huge amount of wasabi on my second bite that just completely overwhelmed the flavor of the uni. My friend got scallop and tuna, and she scraped it off of hers. The wasabi isn't the hand-grated fresh kind either, so it's not like you're missing out if you scrape it off. We closed dinner with their coconut creme brulee. It didn't sound all that appetizing but it was effin' delicious! I never order dessert at restaurants, but I think I will next time I come back here. It was sooo good, at the top was torched properly (one tap and the brulee properly cracked). Protip, do know that matcha tea is free with the purchase of sushi (and it's not too bad). I wouldn't swirl the cup too much either, because matcha IS a powder and drinking it all swirled around can get nitty gritty unpleasant. I know ginger serves as palate cleanser, but I think the matcha provided a clearer, cleaner palate for me than the ginger. THE SERVICE: Surprisingly, quite good. The waitress was really nice and one of the sushi chefs was really amicable. I also saw two Japanese people here who were joking around with the employees. I wanted to sit at the bar to watch the sushi chefs make food, but maybe I'm not tall enough, but I certainly did not get to really see the sushi being made. For that, I'd just rather sit at the tables, and do come early (6pm for dinner service), because within 20 minutes of opening, the small place was already completely crowded. THE VERDICT: The place is decent, and it's relatively close by to where we work. I really did like the food, and I spent $55 for 2 people (tip and tax included), left feeling quite full, and that was including two orders of uni ($25 alone)! You have to experience their Sukiyaki at least once. And remember to ask for an egg, separate the yolk from the white and put the white in the soup. Leave the yolk in a bowl to dip your meat in. It's some kind of wonderful melting in your mouth with the creaminess of the yolk and the tenderness of the beef. Yes, it is a raw yolk - but be adventurous :) Their sushi is ok. After reading a couple of reviews about the ramen at Haru Ichiban, I had to try it out since Umaido doesn't taste as good as before to me. The prices are pretty ridiculous for what it is... $10 for dinner/$8 for lunch per bowl of ramen (pretty good portion but still... it's ramen!). Ramen shouldn't cost more than $5 in my opinion but restaurants gotta stay in business somehow, right? Bf and I stopped by for lunch on Saturday. Here's what we ordered: Seaweed & butter ramen in miso broth, added poached egg (extra $1) - flavor was alright... a bit salty for me. I liked the noodle though Chashu ramen in tonkatsu broth - pretty rich broth but the flavor is alright I've also been here for lunch & dinner to try other items on the menu. I've been back numerous times since my last review, and everything is has been great each time! I still only get the oishii roll and tonkotsu ramen, but their consistency is always on point. It is a little pricier than I'd like it to be, but the portions are large for both the roll and the ramen. Service is much better than before also! I always look forward to coming back. read more

Lunch is the best here! The sashimi is truly divine. I always get the salmon teriyaki lunchbox with of course the sashimi. They give you good sized portions and hot green tea. It's sooo yum! I always try to go there whenever I can. This is one of my top 10 favs and it is authentic japanese! YAY! read more

Who expects to find good Japanese food in Georgia?? My hosts are big sushi fans - and they took me to Haru Ichiban - which has possibly the freshest fish I've had in a long time. It's also an authentic Japanese restaurant (not fusion or run by non-Japanese people). The otoro was SO FRESH. Yummy. The ramen is decent too. Customer service was fine in the beginning, but gradually the waitress stop coming by to check on my friend and me. Place is a bit hard to find from the road. Location: Duluth Parking: Plaza parking Food: Fresh sushi Service: So-so Interior: Go for the food Had high hopes since this is a lot of my friends' favorite sushi place but to me, it did not leave the best first impression. The interior is not so great. It looked like an interior of a diner (sorta like Denny's?) with no theme or wall decor what-so-ever. But I guess the food somewhat makes up for it. We sat and had ordered green tea to warm ourselves up in this cold weather but our appetizer ended up coming out first with no server at site. While trying to eye down our server for the teas, a table of regulars was seated by the hostess and a few seconds later, they were served of green tea. That was strike one. Finally when the server came around, she sheepishly asked if we needed anything and without any hesitation I asked for our tea. I can tell by her expression that she knew that she had forgotten about our tea. This just makes you think that they only cater to the regulars and do not remotely care to cater to new customers that can be regulars in the future... It was dinner time but our first meal of the day, so naturally we had ordered with our stomach, not with our head. Our orders were ready and the server came to deliver each dish. We had ordered 2 appetizers and 2 rolls each for 2 people. As she handed the rolls to me, she loudly commented, "Wow!" If this comment was coming from a friend, I would not have really mind but it was somewhat offensive coming from the server. This was strike two. I would think the server would keep her opinion to herself next time. We ended up not being able to finish our rolls anyways... Throughout the meal, our server was never to be found. The food itself was good. Some misses and some on a high note. Calamari for appetizer was cooked perfectly with refreshing sauce but their soft shell crab was very dry with no meat. The super dragon roll was very good but the B52 bomber roll was overpowered by sriracha sauce. I guess looking back, the food was 50/50. One of our friends had ordered the chicken teriyaki entree and it was dry like the desert that he didn't even finish half the meal. Here's strike three. We had gotten our checks but they had forgotten to bill us for one of the rolls from our table. Being a good customer, our friend went up to pay for it. We sipped our last drops of the green tea and headed out for the door to find out that they had forgotten to bill us for another roll and stopped us on the way out. We weren't reluctant to pay for the roll but the fact that the servers did not bill us correctly and even after we had went up to pay for one of the rolls, they did not mention anything until we were about to head out was little upsetting. Overall, this place has poor service and organization of staff. I do not remember our server, it may be a combination of the fact that maybe they do not staff one server per table and also that they did not come by as often as they should have. And the billing situation did not leave us on the best note either. I have been a server myself and I can bare little mistakes here and there but I felt like the staff was insincere and just all over the place. I am sure I will give this place another try in the future, but for now, I will not be going to this place anytime soon nor would I make this place one of my regulars~ read more

Haru Ichiban is my go to place for Japanese cravings in Duluth. I've tried various dishes and sushi rolls here and 4 out of 5 times I've left feeling satisfied. My favorite rolls are the Snow White, oiishi, and rainbow rolls. I'm not sure how to describe them but the pictures of them in the gallery make me want some right now! read more

Having been here for many times, I feel I'm justified to write this review. Food: their food is actually very close to five-star. They provides a great portion of ramen, and tasty at the same time; udon is chewy enough; my favorite eel rice is always at the spot. The price is good, compared to Shoya Izakawa, especially their lunch menu. Service: This is the reason that the result is four-star. They close at 2:30, and would force you to order early than that. When they get busy, you are not well attended. Ambience: Around 20 tables inside, a standard sushi bar with Japanese chefs. The environment looks clean. It would get a little bit noisy if they are busy. read more

For a first time visit, I did not leave disappointed! A friend and I came here after some late night shopping across the street at TJ Maxx, and realized neither of us had eaten dinner. Where to go? While walking back to my car, I saw the neon sign that read "Haru Ichiban Japanese Restaurant". Japanese food? I'm there! We were seated immediately in the back of the restaurant at a small table. Our servers were very nice and attentive. We were given a small saucer of edamame and seaweed to nibble on, as well as a mini hot towel for our hands- that was a nice touch! I ordered two rolls: the shrimp tempura and the rainbow. My friend ordered the grilled mackerel, which did have a rather pungent smell, and her sides (broccoli and tuna casserole) were drenched in mayo. Kinda weird LOL. But my rolls were delish. My bill was $19 for two rolls and an iced tea. Not bad. Will definitely be back! Oh and on a side note...the people seated next to us (a scantily clad 20-something year old and a middle aged man) had THE most interesting conversations going on.
