While I was glad to see the old Scoozi space occupied after many years of vacancy, I don't think Harvest is the answer. It advertises as a "farm to table" restaurant, even listing some of the local farms and vendors where it sources its ingredients. But how believable is their "farm to fork" motto when their menu isn't seasonal? Where are those cherry tomatoes coming from in January? Harvest should be offering a pared down, seasonally appropriate menu, rather than putting 50 things on there to appeal to the masses.
That said, let's move on to the food. We started with some glasses of wine - their glasses are reasonable priced (between $8 and $12), which make it actually more cost-effective to order by the glass rather than by the bottle (the cheapest bottle I saw on the list was $32, with the median in the mid-range coming in around $40). I ordered the albarino while my dining partner ordered the gavi. Both were advertised as dry, although they were closer to the fruitier/citrus side and tasted similarly.
We then ordered the following:
- 1/2 doz Pemaquid oysters ($14): they were on special, not as big as other pemaquids I've had. The mignonette was also sad. It was basically just vinegar, with no shallots or black pepper.
- Lobster bisque ($12): when it arrived before our oysters, it was completely cold. Not hot at all, so we asked them to heat it up. When it came back, it was actually really good - not doused in heavy cream, but light and full of great lobster flavor. It was drizzled with truffle oil and had substantial chunks of meat. I really enjoyed it.
- Charred octopus ($14): the octopus tasted reasonably fresh and had a nice char to it. Everything else on the plate, however, I took major issue with. Tomatoes and avocado in January? Also, they lacked any seasoning. The white bean puree underneath was also terrible. It was served cold, and it was flavorless and grainy in texture. Bleh.
- Ricotta gnocchi ($21): STAY AWAY. DO NOT ORDER. This is the WORST gnocchi i've had in my life. It was like chewing a flavorless GUMBALL. I could not eat more than 2 bites, we had to send it back. The waiter was unapologetic and said to me, "That's how it's supposed to taste." Sir, RICOTTA doesn't even taste like that! Ricotta is light and fluffy, whatever chemicals you put into your ricotta to transform it into GUM is an issue. So so so bad.
- Seared scallops ($30): the scallops were underseared, slightly undercooked, and oversalted. It was disappointing, and everything else on the plate was lackluster (green beans, marcona almonds). Disappointing.
The manager then came over and apologized for the gnocchi. Both he and the waiter were quite pushy in having us order something else, but when you've just eaten gum for your meal, you're not in the mood. So we asked them to bring over a cheese plate, which was fine but nothing outstanding.
I would not come back to Harvest. The food just didn't wow me. read more
