Last year I would've given hardwood gold a solid five stars. I referred many people there. I enjoyed their fresh salads and their Aussie Pies were great. This year they've done away with table service and the bulk of the food is available in a Takeaway refrigerator. The first time I tried it over memorial day weekend the salads were in there and the protein- so you could get a chicken breast to get on your salad. I've been back two different times for lunch over the course of the summer and neither time was there any protein to add to your salad in the case. This is kind of a dealbreaker for me. I also hopped in for breakfast one day in August. Unfortunately several tables were dirty, three of the staff were standing around chatting and even though there was only two other people in the restaurant they continue to call out our names for us to go get our drink and then to get our bagel. read more

This place is a much needed addition to the Charlevoix restaurant scene. We went today for their farm-to-table lunch and the food was beyond outstanding! The Funky Chicken Salad was to-die-for, with perfectly seasoned chicken, and deliciously fresh veggies! The BLT sandwich was served on a light bun with melt-in-your-mouth bacon, fresh sliced tomatoes, and a delicious dressing! The outdoor seating on the side of the building had a lovely breeze to go with the picture-perfect view of Round Lake. I can't wait to go back! read more

I wish their customer service was better, I took two stars off for the poor service. We went in around 6pm on a Friday excited to see what they had to offer and to sample some of the maple syrups. The gal was horribly rude and bothered by us being there. We bought some syrup and decided to try their coffee the next morning. It was ok but not great. We took some of their meat pies home to try because they looked awesome. In the end this place could be great, but their staff isn't consistently friendly which is a shame. read more

The girls that work here are rude. I came in for breakfast and they were more concerned about talking to each other, than greeting me. I have a broken leg and instead of bringing my coffee to me, they stood at the counter yelling my name as I slowly got worked my way to the counter. They were more concerned about telling me where to throw my garbage away that say "thank you, have a nice day". The food is also way over priced. read more

Stopped in for cold brew coffee. First question I asked - " Do you have heavy cream?" " Yes we do!" I ordered two large size cold brews (16 oz), and a small decaf cappuccino. Put a charge of $9+ on my Visa. She set one cold brew and the decaf on the counter and I told her we ordered 2 cold brews. She looked at the ticket, punched some things on the cash register and said, that will be $6+ dollars. I guess I missed it on their sign but each cold brew was over 6 bucks! When I questioned it, she said it was because it was "on tap". Really? OK, I wanted a coffee so I took it and went to the area to put our heavy cream in. There was skim milk and half and half. Walked back to the counter and told her there was no heavy cream. She said it was on the counter. I told her what was there and she very curtly responded that was all they had. So no heavy cream? No, thats all we have. But that was the first thing I asked before I ordered. Apparently she doesn't know the difference between heavy cream and half and half. Not surprising! Fixed the coffee and kept adding half and half but could not get it to taste right. Drank about half of it and tossed the rest walking down the street. The girls behind the counter could care less that we did not get what we wanted. read more

Went yesterday. Wraps were bland and VERY expensive. Then we went the next morning to give them a second chance... after waiting 15 minutes for obnoxious customer that was handled inappropriately we finally got to order our drinks. I ordered a medium latte and it came out to be almost $6. BUT, when I got the latte it was in a size small cup. When I went to address the problem they admitted their mistake and did nothing about it. All in all, we ended up at the gas station down the street with better coffee, a better price, and better customer service! Sincerely, disappointed. read more

I've been coming to Charlevoix on business for a couple of years and somehow never made it here until today. What a shame - it may become my regular lunch spot. For one thing, it's the only legit coffee place in town, and darn good at that. Besides that the food is great and flavorful without being heavy, and their shop is full of delicious stuff. They even have a juice bar! Too bad they are open for lunch only. read more

This is a true gem of a cafe in Charlevoix! We had the meat pie, salad and potatoes, and all were great! The chicken, leek, & portobello pie was unbelievable. The flavor was beyond what I had expected. We wanted the order for take away, and they easily accommodated us! We will definitely go back next time we are in town. read more

My friend and I had lunch there today and the food is fantastic. We both got the oven-baked fish and chips and boy was it tasty. Not greasy or heavy, just some great breading and the fish baked to perfection. And the potatoes were to die for - crispy crust and wonderful taste. My sense is that everything is fresh and local. I can recommend this place wholeheartedly. Go, go, go, if you are in this neck of the woods. read more
