We went during happy hour and tried a variety of small plates and dishes. The standouts were the miso beer spare ribs (the meat was flavorful and fell off the bone), the mushroom party, and the fresh oysters. We also tried the classic highball and yuzu highball, which was incredibly strong at the first sip, but mellowed out after the ice diluted it and was tasty. Some things I would pass on are the beef tongue, squid ink karaage, elote, and chicken wing. Portions were quite small for the price. I also wish all of the yakitori had more of a charred flavor, especially the meats. Service was great, our waiter was attentive and gave us recommendations. The interior vibes are definitely more high end, but still casual. If you're dining after 5:30, I would definitely recommend getting a reservation, as it gets packed after people get off work. The food is DELISH. I ended up getting it to go because I got in super late. The food is fantastic even though it's downtown LA prices, but if you get it to go, be careful if they staple the top. I tried to rip it open and the staple stabbed me (while I was making a Youtube video on my food review on This Japanese American Life). I tried: - Squid ink karaage chicken- SO GOOD, the black might look weird but it was so light and airy YUM. IT's fried chicken but not super oily and heavy! - Beef tongue skewer - I was expecting the thin slices but - Chicken heart - one of my other fav things to get at yakitori because I don't eat it anywhere else - a nice chewy sensation! - Mushroom party - a mix of different mushrooms grilled and seasoned to perfection, SO yummy especially when I wanted some veggies - Yaki onigiri - big rice ball, crispy, right amount of seasoning - I just wish the bottom was as crispy as the top. There was some sauce at the bottom of the cup so it wasn't crispy anymore. I also wish there was a salmon or some sort of topping option other than plain but still YUM Overall, definitely try this place and I would have tried their course if I wasn't so desperate to try their beef tongue and chicken heart since those are my favs! read more

Came here for dinner for two on a Friday night and was seated right away without a reservation. I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately was sorely disappointed. Almost everything that I tried was sorely bland / average tasting. The only exception is the chicken meatball skewer which was tasty and well seasoned. The black karaage was dry. The black fried rice tasted too much like vegetables and was missing garlic. The tuna avocado toast was average. The wagyu and wasabi skewer was way overdone the meat was tough to chew. The broccolini was over charred. The pork belly lacked flavor. Service was fine. Although they did forget two items in our order and we spotted it in the check. They also served all the food almost altogether instead of pacing the courses so our small table ran out of space very quickly. Restaurant can get pretty loud even though it was not full. Solid izakaya with good options for happy hour and drinks. Was pretty empty on a weekday. Perfect location for getting a quick dinner before the Laker game. Food: Skewers- can't really go wrong here... We tried the chicken breast, wing, and meatball. All were good. The pork riblet was good as well. Kinda reminds me of the mcrib at McDonalds a lil bit minus the sauce and the firmness/quality of the pork. Only one id skip would be the corn. It was just ok for me. Hatch was my second victim of Dine LA -- I went with a friend for lunch ($25 for 6 "courses") on a Wednesday after making a reservation on OpenTable. We took the Metro to 7th St / Metro Center, which spits you out right below the restaurant. The tuna tataki handroll was a little awkwardly sized so you had to eat carefully and quickly or else items would fall out. The tuna sear was a little bit tough on the outside but otherwise the roll's flavors were well balanced, with a hint of vinegar in the rice and the savoriness of the fish. Seaweed salad wasn't fishy at all and had a sweetness that worked with the light umami flavor. Squid ink karaage was crispy but it was just like normal karaage. It was juicy and the aioli had a smooth contrast. Chicken meatball skewer paired well with the egg dip but I wish it was a bit sweeter. I am usually not a fan of either bacon or shishito peppers but the bacon shishito worked really well together and was probably the most flavorful dish. It wasn't too greasy and the smoked flavor of the bacon shone through while the punchiness of the shishito peppers were vibrant in comparison. Hatch greens were refreshing, but I wasn't super sold on the napa cabbage since it made it a bit watery. Service was incredibly fast. My friend and I were in and out of there in an hour (plenty of time to spare before class ). The chicken is tender, or juicy and soft in texture. Hatch has been open for six years with a modern Japanese grill. With validation, you can pay $4 for three hours at the underground parking lot. You can also take DASH B or a subway B or D, exit at 7th Metro station and walk there in 2 minutes. I didn't find the food matched up with these reviews at all. We tried the Dine LA tasting menu. The first 3 items were good, miso soup, hamachi handroll & spare ribs. We also enjoyed the Happy Hour punch. However, karaage, meatball skewer, ahi skewer, mushroom skewer & rice balls were all misses. Mushrooms & tuna seemed undercooked. Neither should be difficult to bite or cut into. The rice ball just tasted like fish flakes. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing, but it seems the tasting menu should highlight their best of the best. Not an absolutely true Japanese izakaya but very close. For instance, the yakitori chicken is grilled the same and they have their own version of togarashi. But they also have their own hot sauce (which works well with the chicken too). Novelty, won't repeat mainly because food is soso given the price/compared to authentic Japanese (which to be fair is not exactly what modern Japanese fusion bills themselves as so comparison isn't 100% fair) Yakitori was flavorful but everything is priced per location and ambiance is nice but the food doesn't match quality wise. If you aren't particular then it'd be fine. Blackened karaage is a novelty but actually worse than normal karaage unfortunately. The sauce is cute aesthetically as a touch but it doesn't taste good actually. The rice is not good, wanted it to be but it deviates too much from what fried rice should taste like and even on it's own... the Service was great. Tables can feel quite close to someone else, almost not enough space to squeeze between tables if I recall correctly. It's DTLA though so space is at a premium. Understandable. read more

"Everything was either mid or really good. Which is a good thing" - SO That sums it up really well. The server, Jay, let us know that the whole table didn't need to order the dinner prix-fixe, so we were able to try a lot, and order the things that we really wanted to try separately. Stand outs were the Pork Belly Skewer $6 (liked it so much had to get another), mushroom party skewer (shiitake and oyster absorbed so much flavor), beef tongue skewer $10 (fatty and american bbq like - so tasty!), and yaki onigiri. The Swan Song $18 cocktail was also refreshing and not overpowering like the bourbon in the Yuzu Sour $15 (SO did not like, downed it, and got tipsy early on lol). Chicken Wing $7 with the peach habanero glaze was hardly spicy (slight kick) and mid. Prix-fixe as of 9/7/24 (smaller portions than the regular menu) $55: - Miso Corny Soup: sweet corn was a nice touch! Miso soup itself was a little saltier than I would have liked but SO liked it a lot. - Tsukemono: daily house pickles. Hard to mess up - refreshing and tasty. - Avo Tuna Toast: similar to what you would find in Tuna Crispy Rice appetizers, except in one, larger piece. The base is thinner which made it crispier and tasty - Squid Ink Karaage (2 pcs): Nothing memorable compared to your go to spot for karaage, aside from the charcoal appearance. - Broccolini: simple. Garlic chips were a nice touch. - Yaki Onigiri: Simple, but nicely flavored with crispy bits. - Chicken Meatball Skewer: not our cup of tea. Texture is softer than preferred. Dip was sweet. - Pork Belly Skewer: Yuzu Kosho was such a nice touch to an already juicy morsel of meat. - Mushroom Party Skewer: THIS. over the chicken meatball for sure. We made it just in time for Happy Hour and ordered the Shishito Pepper, Chicken Wing, Pork Riblet, Fancy Fries, and the Onigiri. Our favorite was the Fancy Fries! The seasoning and sauce were very good and a good portion was given. Our least favorite was the Onigiri as it was plain and nothing special with it. The hamachi, avocado tuna, black rice, ribs, and other rice were good but not great. The desserts were good. The variety of many drinks were mostly great. Agedashi Tofu (6/10) The mushroom in this is a bit overpowering. There's a bit of crunch which is nice but it's nothing impressive. Again, too much mushroom and salt. There's better agedashi tofu out there Beef Lengua Yakitori (10/10) The beef just melts in your mouth. If I wasn't poor I would order 2 lmao. Very delicious and gives you a new idea of what lengua can/could taste. Awesome, definitely try. Squid Ink Kaarage (7.5/10) Don't be fooled, it's not burnt. Pretty solid, nothing crazy. I wouldn't say it's different from any other chicken kaarage. I wouldn't order once to try but probably not again. Chicken Meatball Yakitori (7/10) Not sure what the hype is. It's ALRIGHT. Just a chicken meatball dipped in egg yolk. If anything, the egg yolk sauce is pretty good. Overall, the meatball is mid. I wouldn't get it again. Just tastes like seasoned ground chicken. Corn Tower (8/10) Pretty decent. The corn is corny and crunchy! The multiple sauces around the dish are good. It's like a super crispy corn chip. I've been waiting to try this place out and finally got an excuse with the recent yelp passport event. There was no wait time during the weekday around 7pm. I ordered a few skewers, a black fried rice with no mushroom, and grilled apple dessert. The skewers came one by one along with the black fried rice being first. The fried rice was really flavorful and strong on the ginger taste. My favorite skewer was the chicken meatball, which came with a sauce consisting of egg yolk and soy sauce. All of the skewers were delicious. The grilled apple dessert was very unique too. The combination of ice cream, apple, and a cookie gave a nice mix of textures and sweetness. Each dish served beautifully on the plate with a wide range of flavors. Our husbands ordered from the menu. Started with the miso soup to hamachi, oysters, squid ink karaage, ( comes out very black with a gray dipping sauce, very delicious), the miso spareribs were outstanding fall off the bone tasty. We tried the bone marrow for the first time along with mochi bread which paired well together. The lamb chops were very tender. We shared everything and by the end of the evening we were very satisfied. Lots to opt for with whiskey and rum as well. They have validated parking ($44 without validation so make sure to get validated for $40 off). Can I just add that I hate driving up the parking ramp!? 5 minutes of just driving in circles is not a good way to start a meal. Celebrated our friends birthday here the other night...easy to make reservations through Open Table. Love the ambience of this place (huge bar to the left and tables - big and small - to the right). Easily fit a group of 5 or more. Small plates but easy to share if you get a few items. They had a dinner DINE LA menu for $55 for about 6 items. For a party of 5, we ordered 3 "DINE LAs" and some items on the side and dessert. We also had about 2 drinks each and the total came out to a little over $500 (after tax, tip and 3% kitchen fee). We were definitely full and probably could've done without a few items. I can't say enough good things about this place. It was the last stop of the night after a day of drinking. Hatch is located in the same plaza as the hotel we were staying at for the weekend, a center known as The Bloc. It was an hour before closing on a Sunday so space was pretty empty but lighting was low and music was chill. It created a nice, relaxing atmosphere for an end of day dinner. To be honest, we weren't expecting much because of the center it was located in, but were pleasantly surprised. We ordered the following: Corn stack: crunchy and tender with three patty like pieces and small dollops of different sauces to try. Very tasty. Chicken thigh skewer: super tender chicken thigh with green onion. Flavorful and delicious. Wagyu skewer: delicious and topped with wasabi. For me, I think the wasabi was so strong, it took away from the beef flavor and the single skewer was $18, I believe. Not entirely worth it in my opinion, could've been more tender. But yummy nonetheless. Beef tongue skewer: I love beef tongue and I have never had it this tender. Incredible. The marinade is delicious. Definitely a must order. Agedashi tofu: only three pieces but comes in this large bowl of delicious, thick, mushroom broth with braised mushroom slices. So rich and tasty. The broth actually is the highlight of the dish. Black fried rice: black rice, nutty and al dente. An assortment of vegetables and mushrooms, we added on ground chicken and it was a rather large dish. In certain areas the rice crisped up beautifully. I'd order it again. Cocktails were flavorful and well balanced and there was a small wine selection. Not quite as easy to share dishes for a large group, but service was fast and friendly. this place is so underrated. i think it may get looked over due to its pricey menu but i have never been let down by the food itself. the beef tongue is my absolute favorite and i think about it weekly. the texture and flavor is so unique, rich, and addicting. if it was not $10 i would order so many of them! the chicken meatball skewer and corn tempura tower are another one of my go-tos. the dessert has always been great too, decadant and fun. if you dont mind the splurge (it's not expensive but i feel it's a lot for the portions for some people), you will enjoy the meal. one of my mom's favorites during her last visit! read more

Came for valentines day where they served a preset menu. The ambiance was good, nice restaurant. Customer service was 10/10 everyone was great. Would love to come back and choose our own food options. Heres what we ate: Oysters 10/10 cant go wrong and they were fresh Tsukemono: we never got Tuna tataki handroll: 7/10 good, not spectacular Squid ink chicken: 10/10 delicious and cooked perfectly. Looks like burned coal lol but the taste and tenderness is spot on Hatch greens: 7/10 basic house salad vibe Yakatori---- white prawn: 7/10 Duck breast: 7/10 Beef tongue: didn't try but looked good Chicken meatball: 8/10 this was my fave Chicken hearts: also didnt try bc to much of a baby lol Lovely onigiri: 9/10 cant go wrong with crispy rice Binchotan brownie: 9/10 the flavor was spot on. First I gotta give a big shoutout to Ray, Manny, and Chef Eric. You guys treated me with the upmost love and kindness. I really can't say thank you enough for sharing this wonderful first time experience. Started the night at the bar and was instantly greeted by the amazing staff and got a first hand view of all the delicious bites available. The drinks were terrific and come off the dopest menu I have seen recently. Smaller portions, but excellent for sharing and trying a little of everything. I'm sill thinking about the wagyu burger. Me and my love were looking for a little spot to enjoy a drink together, we wanted something close by the train station. I was starting to get sad because we weren't finding anything. Finally we see this little spot in the corner, and sure enough they have a bar. My sadness started to go away, as we continued into the environment we were welcomed and greeted. We choose to sit at the bar to enjoy some good drinks, my preferred drink is Hennessy, unfortunately they didn't have any. The bartender told us about a different cognac called Martingale, so we tried their Poison Apple and the drinks were amazing! Definitely coming back again to try some of there delicious food. read more

I've been wanting to come here for some grilled skewers, and I'm so glad I finally made it. We tried quite a few interesting and delicious skewers from the menu, and they were all fantastic. The cocktails from the bar were delightful, and the prices were reasonable. The warm, attentive service added to the welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. read more

This place almost got a 5/5 on my book. A friend recommended this spot to us and raved about it for weeks. Upon getting out of the parking lot to look for the restaurant, we walked through a scenic area of LA decked out with Christmas and holiday decor. That was a very nice touch. When we got to the actual restaurant, the ambience exceeded my expectations. The best way to put it is a skewers restaurant meets bar meets fine dining. We were greeted warmly by the host and seated right away. Prices were decent for the amount of food we got. The thing that blew me away the most was the pork belly skewers, the oysters, and their American Wagyu skewers. The corn tower and any of the rice dishes were a bit underwhelming, but overall, it was a fun experience. Do keep in mind that if you are coming in a big party, double check with the server to make sure your order is correct. We had some additional orders charged to our bill even though we were clear with our order. Even then, I would gladly come back. You guys earned a repeating customer! read more

Staying a local hotel here and decided to stop here for a quick bite and drink by while my Girlfriend was getting ready. Vibes are Moderna and chic. Prices are actually okay for DTLA. Drinks were excellent and unique enough where you find them at every other bar. I got the chicken meatball skewer, honestly just as good as some of the best ones I've had on tokyo. 10/10 Also had their wasabi bolognese, good bite, good taste, white sauce with a hint of wasabi. 9/10 Couples that with a Sylvia Samurai drink which has some gin mixed with whole bunch of stuff along with some white ale. read more

Ask for the house hot sauce! It doesn't have a name, I checked. It's some "secret sauce" level scrumptious. Service here was super friendly, fast, and accommodating and there was plenty of seating and it felt nice and lit. Not dark enough to bust out my cell phone flashlight like some restaurants during dinner service. Everyone was knowledgeable and helped guide my selections. I really appreciate the offer to let me take home the bone from the 12" bone marrow! It's good for dogs... or for making some soup stock at home. Or soup for dogs. Everything I tried hit the spot, from the iced sencha tea to the avo tuna toast, squid ink karaage, chicken meatball, and breast and bacon skewers. I want to come back and try more menu items because I'm pretty sure they might be flawless! Does every review for this place mention parking? It's a big paid parking garage, and Hatch is on the bottom level of the mall. I tried to make it worth my while and came for dinner and a movie. read more
