Really loved this place. We checked it out for our monthly girls night out. It was a little hard to find since it's in a big mall. The menu was interesting and wasn't sure exactly what we were getting but once the food came out, EVERYTHING was very tasty and unique. One of the owners came out to say hello and the servers checked on us often. They have a full bar which is a huge plus for us. I'd suggest that you ask for some hot sauce (they have homemade hot sauce) since everything felt like it lacked spice. I'll definitely go read more

I've written over 1.2k reviews but I can count in my one hand how many times I've updated my review. Hatch is one of those places worth revisiting and I'm glad I did! My first visit was kind of underwhelming but the second visit literally blew my mind! My foodie partner said he hasn't been here and had been wanting to try the place so I obliged to go with him. We went dinner time and we both just wanted to just have a few bites. We started off with broccolini, beef tongue, mushroom party, and skirt steak with a drink for each one of us. I had the Sakura love and my friend got a mock tail. We loved everything so we decided to splurge by ordering more items. We had the Avo tuna toast, karate chip salmon, wasabi grilled short ribs, and their most popular item, squid ink karaage. I wasn't impressed with the karaage before but the second visit proved why it was very popular. Everything were so good and even though we're already full, we still decided to get desserts. We had the brownie and marbled cheesecake. This was one of the best dinners I've ever had. We're also very pleased with the service provided by the staff. Thanks to Jamie, our server and Ray, who I believe is the manager for helping us with our choices. I also love the ambiance here. This is a nice and premium feeling yakitori place. You can find this restaurant inside of an upscale shopping mall. There are Outdoor, indoor, and bar seats, all of which you can choose from. We walked over from a close-by apartment, so I can't speak to parking or public transit, but I believe there is a subway station close-by. We visited on a Saturday evening and were able seat right away without a reservation. There were plates, sides, and raw portions of the menu, but we were there for the yakitori. There's also an interesting cocktail menu. The yakitori menu had a pretty extensive selection. I opted for the pork belly, and skirt steak & wasabi. the price difference was drastic, with pork belly being 6, vs skirt steaks 18. The latter sounded interesting and I wanted to say I at least tried it. I also ordered an IPA that I haven't heard of before. The bartender assisting us was very knowledgeable of the drinks menu and was able to help my sister in finding a drink that she might like. We also got to see him make the cocktail in front of us. The drinks didn't take too long to be ready for us. The yakitori however did take a little bit longer than we were expecting. You can see the kitchen, and it doesn't look like there are many spots to grill the skewers, so maybe that's why. The pork belly was delicious. Something about the sauce that it was covered in, really brought out the taste. I did save the more expensive skewer for last, but I ended up being a little disappointed in the skirt steak, because there wasn't as much flavor as I was expecting, given the price. Maybe it was the wasabi, as I think it is real wasabi, and not the one you would see at your everyday sushi restaurant. The wasabi didn't add much to the taste, and I like wasabi. With that being said, if I were to come back, I'd rather get 3 pork bellies as opposed to 1 skirt steak. This was a really nice experience. I came here for my birthday and to explore the DineLA 2023 menu which was less of a seven "course" menu, and more of a sampler. These are my thoughts, with favorites at the top. Squid ink karaage! -- my fave for the meal There was a good balance of flavors -- sweet pickle, tangy from the garlic ranch, lime with acid and crunch and hot salty chicken thighs. Moist meat. Sad it only came with two, but was told their regular menu order comes with 6 pcs. This is also on their Happy Hour menu, uncertain how many pieces you get! Chicken meatball skewer -- tastier than it's name makes it sound This was moist and well seasoned, I loved the rich dipping sauce with the yolk. yaki onigiri had a nice golden rice crust on top and bottom, most of the flavor came from the furikake mixed in. Pork belly skewer -- I was actually more excited about this than the chicken, so was disappointed that the only good bites were if it included a bit of pork fat. I ended up using the chicken meatball dipping sauce to eat.  It was difficult to discern the yuzu citrus flavor. Jumbo shrimp cocktail -- a single large shrimp, the cocktail sauce's wasabi was very subtle and the only heat I could taste was from cracked black pepper.  avo tuna toast -- bite sized, the tuna was fresh. seaweed salad -- standard. Because of my birthday, they threw in a binchotan brownie on the house! The chocolate and binchotan was overpowering flavors for the matcha of the ice cream, bu the binchotan gave the brownie a nice complex flavor. Actually walked right by the entrance it was so discreet. Loved sitting inside, the interior was very clean and modernized. The plates and cups were very unique and cute, overall awesome presentation. I can honestly say that was one of the tastiest cocktails I've ever had and I wished my cup would've kept refilling itself haha. I was impressed, everything was so yummy. If there are only two items that you have to try when coming to HATCH, I highly recommend getting the chicken karaage and the bone marrow dish! My goodness -- not only were these items unique, but they were delicious! The restaurant itself is also really charming. I did dine outside to enjoy what I thought would be a nice sunny day out (but how dare you, LA...you fooled me with a cloudy day in May), but I walked inside to get my validation after dining and it was really cute as well. They're located at The Bloc, right in the heart of DTLA! I can't wait to come back and dine here again soon. read more

I made an online reservation a few days ago after an add for this restaurant popped up on my IG. The main picture was well put together line up of YAKITORI which quickly caught my eye. Im a huge fanatic of Japanese food as my name is from Japan. Yesterday on the day of my reservation which was set for 7:30pm I had an unplanned event pop up so I had to call in and reschedule for 8pm. Jaime answered the phone and was so kind, he made me changing my reservation easy and breezy. Walking up to the place I noticed how modern yet elegant it is, the ambiance is relaxing and chill with lots of fabulous smells. Jaime greeted us with a smile and some laughs and had the chefs table available for us along with some complimentary sake shots to start off our dinner. He let us know all about the menu and what the most popular dishes currently were. Very quickly the Manager Ray introduced himself and the young beautiful chef Sophia. Ray let us know that the specialty item was the Tako Taco he was very helpful as ever dish came out he offered us a story, I really enjoyed this since it felt like I was brought closer to each item of the menu. As for food items we went all out and ordered, I'm going to name them in order which I loved the most form best to least. 1. Half a dozen oyster - Ume Mignonette and Serrano peppers. 10/10 2. Beef Tongue a La Lengua - pearl onions, shiso lime sauce . 10/10 3. 12" Bone Marrow - comes with grilled mochi garlic bread. 10/10 4. Pork Belly - Yuzo Kosho 10/10 5. If you're looking for anything close to authentic, this probably isn't the spot. For a more genuine experience, I'd recommend places like Izakaya Hachi, Torihei Yakitori, or Shin Sen Gumi in Torrance/Gardena area. If you're not up for the drive to the South Bay, Hatch might be an ok alternative. The atmosphere is modern and inviting, and they offer a solid selection of drinks. Service is friendly but lacks organization--we ended up receiving someone else's food twice during our meal - returned, of course. As for the food itself, it was fairly underwhelming. There wasn't anything particularly exciting or memorable, and I found it to be overpriced for the quality. On a positive note, validated parking is a nice perk. read more

Food - 5 stars. My favorite are lamb and beef tongue. Usually lamb had its smell but this lamb had no smell at all. Service - 5 stars. We were party of 3. My two friends ordered prefixed dinner but I decided to go with a la cart. My two friends were almost 2/3 into their meal but I didn't get any of mine. As soon as waitstaff realized somehow system only recognized two prefixed and didn't capture my orders, they had my orders as priority. To apologize for the delay, they also gave us a matcha ice cream with brownie. Usually I would get a little upset if restaurant made mistakes on orders, but the staffs here really went above and beyond trying to make it right. Stopped by Hatch for dinner this week at the Bloc LA! It's not your traditional yakitori and bar, but they have such a wide variety of meat and seafood skewers to choose from, with my favorites being their shrimp and chicken meatball. Their Black Karaage is a must get, that's made in a squid ink batter giving it that deep black coloring. The Bone Marrow was so big, buttery and delicious, definitely the highlight of our meal! I wasn't the biggest fan of the Mochi toast texture that it came with, but it had a good flavor. I do think some of the meat skewers were slightly overdone, but overall a good blend of flavors and elevated concepts. read more

The employees are very nice, so it makes the atmosphere better as well. Overall, the parking is not great at all even if you get your ticket validated it's pretty pricy. This place was on my list to try for a while and I finally got to try it last night. Overall, the food is just ok for me. Here is what we had for a table of 5: Skewers: - chicken thigh & green onion - this was standard - pork belly - good but nothing you can't get at other robata places - steak with wasabi - didn't like...had a gamey taste - Hokkaido scallop - ok, didn't care for sauce - lollipop lamp - very gamey - chicken meatball - just ok Other dishes: - soft shell crab taco - this was really good and the only think I'd come back for next time - wasabi Wagyu bolognese - just ok. Hatch is a gem, hidden in the middle of an outdoor mall and across from a Starbucks. At first glance it looks like any other casual cafe, but don't let the ambiance fool you. The food is amazing. We tried a wide variety of items and they were all superb. The corn tempura was a standout - corn kernels formed into rings, then fried in tempura batter and served with THREE different sauces. The mushroom party was, indeed, a party - a variety of mushroom types marinated in some sort of savory teriyaki sauce and then grilled hard. They were so good we ordered a second with dessert. The sesame cheesecake was topped with dehydrated blueberries, sesame seeds, and some sort of light, fruity essence that made it sweet and a little savory. I've been here once before when the restaurant first opened in 2018 (?). I remember meeting the owner but unfortunately, he wasn't at the restaurant this time around. I'll honestly admit that I haven't been back since because Hatch wasn't very memorable for me the first time around other than the black Kara-age dish that was served mainly because of its unique appearance. The food could have tasted better but I also understand that the restaurant had just opened less than a month and probably needed to improve their dishes. Today's review will reflect the 2nd time going when I went for my friend's birthday last week. My friend specifically chose this place because he loves Yakitori, so I figured, sure why not, since it's been a few years. First off, the restaurant has parking validation available for I believe a reduced rate. There's also street parking around, but might be difficult to find especially at night when metered parking is popular then. I ended up parking at Fig@7th structure since I got 3 hours free from my gym membership at Gold's Gym and walked over. Hatch is located on the lower level of The Bloc shopping center. It's tucked away in the little corner. Outside is very minimal and the inside is quite elevated and chic. They have what looks like an outdoor patio for outdoor dining but because it was raining the day I went in, everyone was indoors. Our host seemed busy at first but another employee--perhaps a waiter--had asked if we were seated and promptly tried to seat us in the back of the restaurant. Customer service is already great right off the bat as they were attentive and provided the service quickly. What we ordered: Bottle of Demon Slayer Sake - Very smooth and paired well with most of the items that came out. i liked this sake. Served cold and quite refreshing. Squid Ink Kara-age - This was definitely way better than the first time I came. Not sure if they changed anything or the chicken itself tasted better, but I do think this is one of their most popular items and that's for a reason. The batter to chicken ratio is pretty good too unlike some places I've been to in the past. Agedashi Tofu - I think I would order this again. I really liked the taste of the Agedashi tofu in the thick shiitake broth. I thought the two really complimented well with each other since tofu is simple and bland and with the mixture of the salty shiitake broth both gave it a balance once it entered my mouth. Fancy Fries - These came out piping hot and I think it was a big hit. I ordered this as I like to have carbs with my meats and veggies and I think everyone enjoyed it after the wedges cooled down. Miso Pork Spare Ribs - The ribs were recommended to us by our server. I would recommend this dish as I liked the miso caramel marinade they used on the pork ribs. The one thing I love about my ribs too is when it falls off the bone and that was exactly what happened with this dish. It was slightly on the smaller side for our group to share, but we were all able to try some. Wasabi Short Ribs - This was a big hit within our group. Just imagine the Korean style short ribs with the three bones nicely marinated to their own sauce but you can still taste the quality of the meat. I really liked this dish - soft and chewy. It was so delicious. Corn Tempura - This was a sad and underwhelming dish. Our waiter suggested this and when it first came out, it looked pretty epic with its presentation with 3 corn tempuras stacked on one another, but it was just okay. I was surprised the waiter had highly suggested it as I think this would be my second to last recommendation from what we ate. Winner, Winner Chicken Inners - Personally, this was my least favorite one. If you're not a fan of exotic meats (heart, gizzards, and liver) then I would just do without this dish. I gave it a shot, first with the heart which had a very "hearty" taste, I couldn't handle the gizzard's texture, and the livers had a very strong, iron taste. It wasn't an all around winner for me. Under the grilled sticks we got the chicken meatball (full of wonderful flavors), beef tongue (I could only handle little bits of this but it was good), chicken thigh and green (probably my favorite of the yakitori) and the mushroom party! I guess that concludes my review for Hatch. Although it's a step better from when I first had it, I don't think I like it enough for me to come back unless another friend wants to try this place again. My experience at HATCH was one of the best and most unforgettable meals I've ever had. My boyfriend and I had a 7 PM reservation this past Friday and were seated immediately. Leading up to the dinner, we both had certain expectations -- we expected a classy, modern take on Japanese food, with a relaxed ambience. As soon as we took our first bites, however, we knew we were in for something really special. Kudos to our server Sergio, who provided amazing service to us from beginning to end. At most restaurants, servers provide recommendations, accommodate requests, and bring out orders, and that's all I can really expect -- but I felt that the service at HATCH went above and beyond. I could tell that they wanted us to have a great experience and eat the best they had to offer. Sergio recommended the month's special, wasabi bolognese, to us, and other popular menu items, including cocktails. We were more than glad to take his recommendations. The standout items to us were: Wasabi Bolognese -- 9/10: This was the first thing we ate and it almost made us angry with how good it was! Such a rich umami flavor, the perfect size for 2 to share, and not really spicy despite having wasabi in the name. Squid Ink Karaage -- 10/10: If you've ever had squid ink pasta before, throw away your expectations because Hatch's karaage is so much more seasoned and flavorful. It had the perfect crunchiness on the outside and juiciness on the inside. I loved it. Thigh & Green Onion Yakitori -- 10/10: This is the most traditional izakaya-like dish from their menu, and although it could be considered basic, the quality of this really spoke volumes. We also ordered the mushroom party, wagyu & wasabi, lamb lollipop, and ahi tuna yakitori, all of which I wholeheartedly recommend. We definitely want to come back here for special occasions. I'm not sure if a child's palate can fully appreciate the selection here, but this is definitely an amazing spot for couples, groups, and single families who want to have a unique and delicious Japanese dining experience. HATCH is located at The Bloc, parking in the structure is $4 with validation - I think we were there for about 2 to 2.5 hours. Got greeted by Ray (GM) and seated immediately. The decor inside the restaurant is beautiful. We were seated right in front of where the food was being prepared. It was pretty cool to get the food served immediately that close to you. Entire staff was friendly and energetic - everyone had recommendations prepared for each portion of the dinner. We ordered cocktails, several skewers, and a few appetizers to share. We got our drinks while we were waiting for the food and more dishes/skewers came out whenever we finished what we had - they have great timing. Drinks were good and everything we ordered tasted amazing. What I would get again: Squid Ink Karaage, Skirt Steak & Wasabi Yakitori, Beef Tongue Yakitori, and the Corn Yakitori. Fancy tapas place located at the Bloc in DTLA. Came here with friends during the Christmas holidays as the plaza was decorated with lighted holiday photo opps plus they have a light show set to music that appeared every hour. On to Hatch. The atmosphere was classy and upscale. The Japanese tapas were pretty good and fun to share with all. Favorite was the bone marrow, as it was creamy and served with this chewy Mochi bread. Texture and flavor wise, it was like a party in my mouth and I'm still thinking about it. Also, do not let the color of the black Karaage (second favorite) put you off, it comes with a grey garlic ranch sauce that pairs perfectly with it. We shared other tapas like the pork belly, skirt steak, unagi, and the Furikake salmon. All good. Lastly, you can't have tapas without drinks! I ordered the Jessica Rabbit and it was just the right sweetness and well made. Hatch has plenty of both indoor and heated outdoor seating to enjoy your tapas with your friends. Broccolini is always a fantastic vegetable, and they make it even better with those giant garlic chips. The Chicken Heart is perfectly cooked, dip generously in the seasoning on the side. The Chicken Meatball is the real show-stealer, so tender that the juices drip. Dip excessively in egg yolk for extra extravagance. Forget the sweets, the perfect ending here is Bone Marrow. A foot-long bone sizzles from the grill, and the accompanying garlic mochi bread has a texture that is both brilliant and unforgettable. It's all so pretty that you can't help but have a good time. I enjoyed the experience trying this restaurant out. I appreciated the outdoor seating area on a nice day. I wouldn't expect such a restaurant at the shopping center. They were busy, and I noticed a number of people picking up for takeout. I recommend this place and would go again. Squid ink karaage and avo tuna toast were my favorites. read more

First time back post-pandemic and glad they survived. We used to frequent this place when we weee working in DTLA. Located at the bottom of the shopping mall. Wow. The food was really good. HATCH has been on my list for quite a while, but Japanese skewers aren't really my thing when it comes to planning dinners out. But since I wanted to change it up and my friend really likes Asian food, figured we would try HATCH out. We ordered a ton of stuff. Like a TON of stuff. Duck breast, miso pork spare ribs, black chicken karaage, wasabi grilled short ribs, bone marrow, beef tongue, unagi, skirt steak and wasabi, chicken meatball (with egg yolk and tare dip), and pork belly. The duck breast definitely was the pick of the bunch, and it's not even on the menu! I love it when a place gets duck breast right. Of the regular menu items, the black chicken karaage and and skirt steak stood out for me. And for actual skewers, I was actually a pretty fan of the chicken meatball yakitori. I mean, everything you order here is going to be at minimum very solid to potentially spectacular. Didn't have a single bad item here. Service here was great, no complaints from me. Pretty chill atmosphere and there's no single server tending you, it's really a matter of just getting someone's attention and having them help you out. Overall, HATCH was a good experience.
