One of two public beaches in Miami, Haulover Park is a 177 acre park located between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. It has an impressive 1.4 miles of beachfront. Parking in the lot is $5 weekdays for cars and $7 on the weekends. Originally called North Beach, it contained a Lighthouse Restaurant, a trailer a small refreshment stand, and charter boat piers. The land was acquired by the Dade County Commission in 1935. Construction of facilities began in 1941 but was held up by WWII and were completed after the war. Haulover Park was renamed in January 1947 and opened to the public the following year in 1948. Legend has it the name Haulover came from a fisherman named Philip Edward Baker (1832-1898) who would haul is sponge boat from Key Biscayne over the dunes by cutting a path through the mangrove forest. An area on the maps marked Baker's Haulover in 1823 which people then called Haulover as other generations of fisherman continued the practice. During the Prohibition era, boats would arrive from the Bahamas to deliver whiskey. Alcohol would be to be hauled over the beach to the bayside where speed boats would take it north up north up the Intracoastal Waterway. Haulover beach is historically significant for being a beach the Barefoot Mailmen traveled. The Barefoot Mailmen were US postal workers who delivered the mail in South Florida from 1885 to 1893 by walking barefoot on the beach from Palm Beach to Miami. A sign dedicated to the mailman is located on Haulover Beach in front of the lifeguard building. The Miami portion of the trip took place on Wednesday when the Barefoot Mailman was transported by boat down the New River to its inlet and then walked down the beach until reaching Baker's Haulover Inlet at the north end of Biscayne Bay. The mailman would then sail across Biscayne Bay to deliver the mail in Miami. The return trip back up north would begin early on Thursday. The northern .4 mile stretch of beach is infamous for being clothing optional. It is the largest nudist beach in the U. S. and attracts 1.3 million visitors annually. It was designated clothing optional in 1991 by a Dade County ordinance. As Florida law generally does not allow public nudity, Haulover is one of the few places nudists can go in public. Haulover park has many amenities. The park has a marina, tennis courts, and an enclosed dog park. There are picnic areas, restrooms, and lifeguards. You can go swimming but all flotation devices have been banned from Miami-Dade County beaches since the early 2000s. The park has a great bike bike path and if you don't have one they can be rented from Electribike Miami in the picnic area adjacent to the bark park. Haulover Beach is also known for it's kite flying. It is the location of Skyward Kites, which has a large selection of kites and spinners. So today we visited the actual Haulover dog beach. I saw hardly any dogs at all and would not have none it was actually a dog beach! It was relatively quiet, maybe as it was a Monday? The water was very clear for Miami, probably due to the covid virus, where we have given the ocean and nature back to the elements and not contributing to messing it all up! As we say in England 'the proof is in the pudding" - and my husband, daughter and brother are scientists, and they confirm all this, as do our own eyes!! The beach was lovely and clean and everyone was social distancing. We walked to the water way and enjoyed watching the boats entering the coastal way. A lovely, lovely beach, I will be back. I have also been on the beach side near the Ritz hotel - where you can access the pier - which is also lovely. I have also been to the park side, across the road, when T went to the kite festival ! Docked a star because no signage about bathroom closure 30mins before park close and there isn't much signage about what time the park actually closes (I was told "sunset", but that's so vague). They closed the bathroom @4:30pm when sunset was officially at 5:40pm!? The attendant closing it was extremely rude and when asked where I was supposed to pee, she just pointed to the ocean!? Gross. It's paid parking at the connected lots. The lots connect through a lit tunnel, but still a lil sketch after dark. There is a paved trail that goes between the tunnel and the sand. Stay alert because cyclists come down the pavement full speed and there were even a couple of cars, though how they got there was a mystery... The beach itself has lifeguard posts w/color-coded flags about the water conditions, but nowhere on the beach where the meaning of the colored flags could be easily found. We were able to figure out what they meant because we googled them. This doesn't seem very safety or informationally oriented, but is what it is, I guess. Beach was fairly clean, but sand was a bit rough. Water had a lot of seaweed and there was a "dangerous marine life" alert (purple flag) with lots of visible jellyfish strewn down the shoreline. But, there was a nice breeze and it wasn't that crowded. Don't know that I'd go out of my way to specifically come here. There are much nicer beaches elsewhere. read more

1. A flat fee to park (this is a big PLUS because you don't have to keep adding more time)...it's about $7 & change on the weekends for a car. 2. Parking is easy to find 3. It's a gorgeous beach (just wish there was less seaweed but its nature so you have to take it as is. I went recently and the water was clear (I was able to see a cute fish swimming around) 4. Part of it is a park (where you can bbq) and the opposite side is where you'd swim 5. Feeling a bit wild? There's a section of the swimming area where clothing is optional This is one of the first beaches I visited when I moved to Miami many moons ago. It's still one of my favorite because for the most part it's family friendly. If you don't mind walking you can also walk to the pier that is close enough for you to see. There's a section of the swimming area where clothing is optional . This is one of the only beaches I visited on my trip to Miami. It's still one of my favorite mostly in part it's family friendly. Love love love this place! The fact I can bring my dog to the beach is fantastic, parking is super easy , with paths leading you right to the beach! Lifeguard towers are marked and visible. The people I encountered were simply nice. Everyone's dogs were well behaved and obedient. Plenty of space for dogs to run off leash and still not be crowding beach goers. Love coming here specially with family for a good barbecue/beach day. You can get a great workout in too, rent bikes and ride bikes along the pathway. For parties and bbq's if you make it in early you can get a few tables in a good area with grills or you can bring your own grill. The water is clean and perfect. I'm reviewing the dog park and dog beach. The dog park is nice and tranquil with a lot of shaded areas for your dogs to rest after running around in the sunny spots. There are picnic tables so you can relax while your dog is playing. The beach is nice but has a tendency to be littered. Too many chip bags floating along the shore, sadly. I drive more than 5 miles to be able to bring my dog here. Interesting tip, if you're worried about your super energetic dog at the beach, take them to the park first to burn some energy for an hour and then walk over to the beach. read more

This park is absolutely excellent! We couldn't get enough of it. Super clean, great and cheap parking, and gorgeous. The beach here is perfect: clear water, clean beach, beautiful soft sand. There is virtually no trash on this beach, which surprised me. Also, the restrooms are well-maintained. I wasn't apprehensive at all to use the restrooms at this park. On the beach, it's not super crowded at all. I wasn't afraid for my personal belongings as I frolicked in the water. I didn't have to keep one eye glued to my stuff like so many other beaches. I could lay out on a towel without being approached by someone. Big win for me! I really liked the parking here. Depending on which lot you choose, the fee is either $5 or $6, and you can easily pay for parking at a kiosk. Also, the parking is on the other side of Collins, which is a super horrendously busy road. However, they have tunnels to walk to the beach! Yay! On the northern end of Miami's beaches is this perfect beach and park area meant for entertaining and relaxation. Not everyone goes out on their boat in this area and being that's it's accessible and accommodating for visitors with pets-it's a no brainer as the ideal location to spend the day at the beach. Yes, the infamous nude beach is here but it's tucked away so you won't be exposed to it if it's not your style. Honestly we don't even say that we're going to Miami anymore we just say we're going to Haulover because this is our favorite place to visit for their beautiful nude beach. There are sections of the beach that are for normal sunbathers but there is also a nude beach section and it's HUGE. There's also vendors that will rent you chairs and umbrellas if you need it for the day. There are not a lot of food vendors and no alcohol vendors so bring whatever you're wanting to eat or drink for the day with you. There is parking in the state park across the street and you can walk through a tunnel to get over to the beach or you can have an Uber drop you off. I am absolutely obsessed with the dog beach section here. It's got amazing blue water, clean sand, and it's so much fun for the pups. It *seems* like everyone picked up after their dogs from what I can tell, and the other dogs were pretty friendly. There's also a wash station to rinse your dog off after swimming and playing, and a regular dog park section where your dog can run around as they dry off. The only issue I had was that my dogs kept trying to eat the pieces of coral and sponges that came up on the beach. Still gets a 5/5 and I'd give it a 6/5 if I could! Even if your dog doesn't swim, I think it's a lovely area to go and lay out for the day. Almost forgot to mention- parking fee is SUPER CHEAP at just $2 per vehicle! In my opinion Haulover naturist beach is the best beach in south Florida. The beach is super chill and relaxing. Being in the nude is the norm so it's easy to get adjusted too for a first timer. People are respectful, it's a clean beach, very chill and relaxing beach. If you've never been to a nude beach, I would recommend trying it out. There's lots of beautiful people. I go often, some days it's an older crowd some days it's a younger crowd but regardless it's still a safe and great space to unwind and be free. Maria, Línchele and Sherena are so friendly and sweet, Maria is thorough and very helpful. The location is beautiful and the facilities are spotless. I rented pavilion 2 water front next to bathrooms. WOW is the only word I can use to describe what a beautiful place. The pavilion was impeccably clean and so were the restrooms. You saw staff present at all times throughout the day checking over the area to make sure everything was ok. We didn't use the grill, but definitely planning a next one soon just so we can see the ladies again! read more

There are 2 main areas of Haulover Park; the beach side and the intercoastal part. The beach side is quite nice which also has dual doggie parks; one for small dogs and one for large dogs. The beach side also houses a nude beach which I've heard are full of seniors, so if you're into that sort of thing, then you're in luck! The intercoastal side houses many fishing boats where you can charter a private boat and go deep sea fishing. They also have larger commercial boats that can take more than 20 at a time; most of these places will furnish you with a fishing pole as well as bait, and hopefully you'll have some luck and reel in something you can eat. Once you return, they'll have someone who can clean your fish so you can take it home. They also have a dock so if you're in need of gas or food and beverages, then you're also in luck; they have a small convenient store just off the dock. There's also a place where you can go kiting; it's one of the largest of it's kind where you can buy a small kite and fly it with your child. They also have huge kits too in shapes of animals that will freak the living crap out of you if you're not expecting to see it; I'm talking a life sized cow seemlessly floating in the middle of the sky. Some of the grounds in the doggie park are not kept well, but then it's hard to since the dogs go there and destroy it by themselves, other than that, it's a nice place to have a picnic with your 4 legged friend. read more

The trick to having a successful day at this beach is to avoid eye contact with men, ladies! Do not be shocked if naked men approach you. So carry your darkest shades, and you should be good. Another tip is to park by the tower; which is a closer walk to the nude section of the beach. Parking costs $7 whether you choose one or eight hours. I visited this beach three times while I was on vacation and enjoyed the freedom of sunbathing topless without concern for being inappropriate. As far as all the nakedness goes, you'll witness mainly older couples and hot gay men. I didn't feel unsafe or threatened at any point. People are just trying to tan their asses off; literally. I enjoy listening to the sound of the waves crashing so I wouldn't bother carrying a radio speaker to a beach and I suggest you withhold too. read more

This review is specifically for the clothing optional beach. I recently visited on a Monday and was so surprised by how clean and peaceful this beach was! We were able to rent a cabana shade and beach chairs (cash only) upon arrival. There was even a food truck on the beach serving up snacks and cool refreshments. Though not a frequent visitor, as a member of South Florida Free Beaches /Florida Naturist Association, Inc., I've been going to Haulover for well over a decade. Haulover happens to be one of the best beaches in Florida being 1.4 miles long with .04 miles of it being designated as "clothing optional." I know the title of this Yelp site states "Nude Beach," but that is a term generally frowned upon. Instead we prefer to have it referred to as either being a "Clothing Optional" or "Naturist" beach. Keeping the little section of beach as Naturist or Clothing Optional in conservative Florida has involved one political or legal battle after another, so it only exists through the tireless efforts of volunteer activists. As far as beaches go, Haulover enjoys a magnificent shoreline with a perfect recreation setting due to its location as a part of Haulover Park that offers all kinds of recreation activities not only of swimming but of picnicking, boating, fishing and a surprising number of kite flyers. Now as to the clothing optional section, let me say this. It really isn't for those seeking eye candy. Yes, there are plenty of naked people with the most popular section (Station #16) being overwhelmingly gay. But, most of the people not wearing swimming suits should indeed be wearing swimming suits or in some cases might be less of an eyesore if in full scuba gear. Overall it's a great beach, basically our only area beach with a clothing optional section and one that is fully life guard protected. Sorry I couldn't add more pictures to this review. The beach is first come first serve so do not hesitant to bring as much or as little as you want to enjoy your day with. The small section of the clothing optional beach holds couples, singles, gay/bi, swingers and everyone in between! Also, if getting fully nude is not your thing then feel free to keep it all on or whichever parts make your feel most relaxed. Each person can express themselves as much or little as you would like! The beach itself is very clean with little to no ocean debree, small seashells, and soft grainy sand! It is a very safe and secure area that puts you at ease! They have building-bathrooms that also have showers but also rise off stations outside. On the weekends you will find a beach food trailer that serves sandwiches, smoothies, small snacks, and more. There is also chair and umbrella rentals. Parking is CASH ONLY at $7 for all day. It is best to get there early on weekends as due to the lovely Florida weather it gets quite packed by 1pm if not earlier. It's family friendly depending on where you are. They have a great skate park as well as a wonderful dog park. Little and big dogs are separated. Ah, nakedness. Who doesn't love the sounds of the ocean cracking against the sand, the sand through your toes and the feeling of a gentle breeze across your genitalia? The beach is probably my favorite beach in South Florida. I will say per the address on Yelp I did get confused of it's (the clothing optional beach) location. This address is across the street from what I believe is the marina. If you park in the lot, you're at the beach, however, fortunately I didn't just strip down into my nakedness, because not all of the beach is clothing optional. I kept thinking, "where's all the junk at?" I believe you need to walk down to station 12 which is a pretty far walk from the parking lot and you'll see the sign for the "clothing optional" beach. The beach is really what you make of it. Go, take of your clothes - all of them, and have a good time, but not too good of a time as you're in a public place. It's kind of nice to see all the different walks of life there. Yes, not everyone is an Adonis, but that's what makes it even more liberating. You can go, be yourself and enjoy the beach without pretense. It's not cruisey or gawky. People just walking around, laying out, swimming and just doing it while being in the buff. Plus side, no tan lines. Down side, fellas be careful if the water gets too cold. Honestly, I would prefer to go this beach rather than any beach in SOBE. I'd go with friends or I'd go alone. Amazing views, comfortable seating options but horrible personnel. My husband and I went to this park on Sunday. We sat down and prepared to enjoyed the view and fish. One of the security staff comes over and says that we should leave immediately as dogs are not permitted. We explain to the guard that we 1) sat right under the sign(!!!) saying that leashed pets are permitted and 2) the dog is a service animal. The security guard then demanded to show him proof of the dog being a service animal. Even though it is illegal for the guard to demand it, I showed the proof and he left. About 40 minutes after, this lady, another security guard, comes over and yells at us saying that dogs are not permitted. We proceed to calmly tell her that the dog is a service animal and that we right under the sign permitting leashed animals but he continues yelling being all rude, condescending and inappropriate. I showed her the proof too but she continues yelling and saying something about emotional support animals (which does not apply to my dog). She then demands that I tell her about my disability condition or we have to leave (she could ask about the tasks my dog performs for me which I would totally tell her). I refused as it is illegal of her to ask about my disability. She still continues yelling at me. My husband couldn't stand this treatment anymore and yells back at her. We offered to take this to the police or the court. She says fine and leaves. The mood was totally ruined so we left shortly after. I won't be returning and I am totally contacting the park authority about this. read more

After South Beach and Crandon Park, we decided to venture north to Haulover Park. Verdict: This was hands down my favorite. It was the Goldilocks of the three, with the beautiful blue waters of South Beach and much cheaper parking and umbrella/chair rentals. Note, though: We went on a Monday morning, so that might've been why it was so quiet and peaceful. There were only a few other couples and families in our section of the beach. Umbrella and 2 chairs are $45 ($15 a piece). Parking was $6 flat rate though I believe some lots are $5. While the lot was difficult to find, once you find it you'll realize how convenient it is. The lot is across the street from the beach (we made a mistake of looking for it on the beach side - it's not there unless you use handicap parking). Amazing beach! Everyone there is respectful and it's very peaceful, and the nude section is alot bigger than you may think. Almost everyone in the Clothing-optional section is nude, so no need to feel shame; "when everyone is naked - no one is." It's pretty normal there, just everyone is naked. Alot of couples, and yes, old men, but also young men and women of all shapes, sizes and races. The only complaint is while they do have showers on the beach for rinsing off, there are no bath shower rooms, so if you're expecting to have a nice warm shower with soap, forget it. read more
