I'd heard a lot about Haven Brothers, and it did not live up to the hype. It was incredibly overpriced, service was slow even though it wasn't busy, and the food was nothing special. Its history is long and fascinating; among other stories, legend has it that the restaurant used to illegally tap City Hall's electricity. The food itself is great diner fare, including burgers, hot dogs, milk shakes, chili, beans, lobster rolls, and fries. They even offer an item called the Murder Burger, which is a burger topped with all the available condiments. The prices are reasonable. The restaurant is open from 4:30 in the afternoon until 5:00 in the morning, making it the perfect place to satisfy a late night craving. The dining area is housed in a tiny aluminum trailer and has appeared in Family Guy at least once. I wasn't going to write a bad review because I love long lasting local businesses. (Despite what my city says I am a born and bread Rhode Islander). But, it is over a week since we went and I still can't so much look as an egg without my stomach turning. Let me tell you that I love greasy spoons. I will try anything. We were going to go to our late night favorite (Olneyville System of course) but decided to save gas and revisit this Pvd standard. This place is disgusting, inedible and expensive. We were definitely a few drinks deep and couldn't even stomach more than a bite. How do you ruin an egg and cheese sandwich (with bacon on it no less)???? My husband (he of the iron stomach) couldn't eat his burger. Our fries tasted like fish, no matter how much vinegar and ketchup we put on the cover the flavor. Haven Brothers is quite convenient being located between my office and apartment. As previous reviewers have mentioned, you get what you pay for(though it is a little pricey). Closest thing to fast food burgers as you'll get downtown (average wait time 5 minutes). The burgers are satisfying, which is fine, because that's all anyone's looking for. Reviews mean nothing to this place. They are an institution and will keep doing what they're doing and I'm fine with that. Guessing it costs them $1.30 for them to make a burger and maybe 75 cents for fries. Good for them! Capitalism at its finest. They finally took the $10 minimum off the register but guessing that's still a thing on the DL. Inconsistent with the fries. I'll order a large from one employee and it looks like a large but other times it barely registers as a small. But! I got a comp'd milkshake because they lady behind the counter put in probably 6 squirts of mint. Gross but they made me a new one. I'll give them 4 stars for keeping me fed at least once a week. read more

Ordered the garbage plate in hopes of some sinfully good fried food. Unfortunately it was one huge disappointment. The chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks were still part frozen and the cheese was velveeta at best. I'm new to Providence and, while out watching some games at the bar, was told that Haven Brothers is a "Rhode Island institution." While walking home a little after midnight, I happened to see the Haven Brothers truck and stopped there to order a triple cheeseburger and onion rings. The food was amazing! Ok, I'm originally from Providence. Grew up there, graduated from HS in '77 and returned in the mid-80s. Was recently there with my family, visiting from NY, and hadn't had a Haven dog in 20 years. It was one of the feature food spots I'd told my wife and kids about, along with Olneyville NY System weiners, Caserta Pizza and the famous coffee syrup I'd grown up on. Haven's hot dogs used to be reasonably priced and had a great flavor, with that 'snap' of skin in every bite--quality dogs that satisfied. What I ate in August was the most tasteless, pasty hot dog I'd ever had in my life. It had negative flavor, an absolute lack of taste--just soggy, wet and inconceivably bland--total emptiness in every bite and the cost was ridiculous. I don't know what happened to this place, but this is not the "classic" Haven Bros. of yesteryear. Don't fall for it. Caserta's is still top notch, though and the Olneyville weenies can't be beat! read more
