We went to the food trucks event in Pawtucket over the weekend and stopped at the Haven Brothers truck. Let me start by saying that the food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered some fries, double cheeseburger and a hot dog. About an hour after eating, I felt nauseous and had a stomach ache the entire night. Worst burger I have had in my life. Burgers from five guys or even smashburger taste much better than what I had. Shame on you haven Brothers for serving such trash food. Not the good grease. The bad, soggy, "whoops-I-dropped-this-bun-in-a-bucket-of-oil-but-I-don't-care-I'm-serving-it-anyway" greasy. I am so not impressed. I can cook mediocre food in my own home. I can, but I choose NOT to. I'm certainly not going to allow my wallet to be raped just so I can say I ate some mediocre food from the Haven Brothers truck. The wife and I bee-lined over to the Haven Brothers truck for the first time after the great Wilco show at Lupo's on Easter Sunday night. Regular visitors to Providence from NYC, we had yet to sample Haven Brothers and with its legendary history and great word-of-mouth reviews we were excited to finally check it out. Now, to clarify, I still had a great post-concert buzz, and from working in Manhattan I extensively sample street food, both good and bad, so expectations were not for gourmet delicacies but plain old greasy burgers and fries. What an extreme disappointment. The first shock came when the total bill for 2 cheeseburgers, fries and a chili dog was $19 (no drinks). OK, very steep (even in NYC) but perhaps understandable for the convenience and the high costs of running a portable restaurant. And the food will surely be worth it, we thought. We took our sack of food back to the hotel and were underwhelmed, to say the least. The $7 burgers, perhaps slightly bigger than a dollar-menu McDonalds cheeseburger, had a big chunk of lettuce and some fixins, but the patty was tiny and completely tasteless. Maybe the saddest burger I've ever had. The Chili-dog was horrifying in appearance, which is to be expected from a hotdog slathered with chili, but the sad sight of the pinkish tube of baloney-like consistency, somehow one step below a Ballpark Frank , was not enticing, and its taste, well, even in my sodden state it was truly unenjoyable. Doubt I'd ever be able to eat it sober, let's put it that way. OK, now how bad could the french fries be? Well, they were mediocre, I suppose, the frozen crinkle-cut type and reheated quickly, but they came accompanied with a not-exactly-red colored tomato-based concoction ( I hesitate to call it ketchup, and catsup would be a stretch) with absolutely no flavor unless it was the bad aftertaste. I mean, really now, you charge top dollar for poor diner food and you can't even upgrade to Hunt's? Please. Haven Bros. is great for its convenient location, but 0 stars for quality of food and value. Reheat a frozen burrito in the 7-11 across the street , save serious cash and you'll be much happier. read more

I LOVE HAVEN BROTHERS!! There's nothing better than leaving the bar and mingling with the crazy crowd at Haven Bros! After my first visit I got hooked! There food is great CHEESE FRIES ARE AWESOME!!! I'm the happiest chick alive at Haven brothers! And everytime I'm there something great is always happening outside.. Old man in a sweater break dancing, the bride and her entire wedding party partying after the reception w/ some haven bros in their belly etc etc.. It's not just the awesome food but how happy everyone is there and I LOVE IT! An aluminum pick up truck masquerading as adiner that serves the greasiest food imaginable to Providences wastoids, insomiacs and street walkers. Parked at City Hall from 7pm-4am, 365 days a year since like 1935. Pretty pricey for what it is, but wtf, you can get a chilli dog/bacon cheeseburger, fries and a terrible shake at 330 am. Oh. My. God. I love this place!! I wasn't expecting much considering it's a mobile diner, but wow! It's definitely not diet food, so please splurge on the chili cheese fries with extra chili (ok, and cheese). I always get the double with bacon too. Greasy-yummy goodness. I'd always heard good things about the Haven Brothers' silver truck. Happy to report that it delivers on late-night, greasy goodness. I stopped by at around 1am on a Thursday night recently, after a late night in the city. There was a small line of friendly, giggly patrons. Folks were very quick to point out favorite dishes -- including the Murder Burgers, which everyone ended up ordering. The burgers were great -- prepared quickly, just the right amount of grease, and fresh toppings. The fries were a bit of a disappointment, I don't think anyone finished their order (and both the burger and fries were served with an average-sized portion). Prices are normal for a late-night joint... about a buck or two more than you'd pay at a comparable place that's open at lunch time. Myself and 7 other JWU nutrition kids came in here last week at about 2 am to eat the triple murder burger. When we told the man at the counter that we wanted 8 TMB he kind of just looked at us like we were crazy. He then proceeded to tell us that was the most that someone has ordered in one shot. Go us! We also ordered 2 sides of plain fries and 4 orders of cheese fries. What were we thinking? I am not really sure. Naturally we made this into a challenge who could finish it first. I want to say the burger was really good but at the same time I ate it so fast that I can't really say. It was filled with onions, cheese, 3 burgers, and to tell you the truth I don't even know what else. I am sorry to share that I did not finish first out of everyone but I was the first female to finish! I should have ate the fries in conjunction with the burger because by the time I got to them they were cold and a little hard. The guy at the counter was very accommodating to our crazy loud group of college students. We all individually paid with our own credit cards but he didn't mind. It was definitely a fun experience and I will come back. I left with a little bit of heart burn and I might have clogged arteries after that experience but hey, you only live once. Literally stumbled upon Haven Brothers one night after having a few drinks with friends and decided we NEEDED to get food in that way you only ever NEED food at all hours of the night. A little like that Lady Antebellum song..."it's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk, and I need you know." You know what I'm talking about. Some friends opted for the triple murder burger and I decided that I didn't quite hate my body that much so went for just the single murder burger with no onions. I think I even ordered an egg on it. Wow. This thing was the real deal and great for that late night craving. Fries were just meh (although quite plentiful!) so I ended up sharing them with pretty much anyone I saw. Saw some innnnteresting people hanging around. One additional star for amusing people watching and the prolonged entertainment factor. read more

I love food trucks, I love street food, and I even love the dirty water dogs in NYC (and here too). I don't love Haven Brothers. When I first moved here I checked it out because it was a local institution. Talk about not living up to the hype. The two star "Meh. I've experienced better." is just about right. The food is fine, there isn't really anything wrong with it. The problem is that it is expensive for what it is. Its decent greasy diner food and its open late but its not a place I clamor to go back to. It's mediocrity is especially pronounced given the proliferation of really excellent food trucks recently. I would take a Mama Kim's or a Poco Loco truck over Haven Brothers any day of the week. read more

After talking to the chef for a while, I was amazed with this place's history and traditions. So it hurt when I found out their burgers were terrible. I had a cheeseburger and my friends both ordered a hot dog. The hot dogs were very vanilla, "everything on it" only includes some onions and more sauce, no where near the way a good hot dog should be served: Saurkraut and mustard were missing. My cheeseburger with everything on it was a little more packed, but honestly one of the worst burgers I've ever eaten. And that includes McDonald's and Burger King, which I never imagined possible. There was no ketchup, only mayonaise, there was one (very yucky) mushroom and the meat was thin and tasteless. The entire burger was small (especially for $5.00), and finally: if I were doing a blind test, I wouldn't say there was any cheese on my cheeseburger at all. At least Burger King burgers have a flame-broiled taste to them, this tasted like the paper it was wrapped in. What saves this place are the fries, which were excellent. Not too greasy, not too thin, a good portion (small) and with enough but not too much ketchup to go. My friend, however, got sick of her hot dog so I would not advise you to eat here during the day, since your stomach will (probably) not have alcohol in it to kill whatever's in their food. Save this for your late-night cravings, and stick with the fries. read more

Contemplated whether or not to give this place one star or two but in all fairness, the burger wasn't terrible. It was an average burger hanging on to its 30 seconds of fame in one tv show...and probably doubled if not tripled its price since then. I had a burger with an egg on it, fries, and a can of dr pepper and sat on a plastic table setup outside and I seriously paid $16 for it. For years, I felt like I was committing a Rhode Island sin by calling myself a Rhode Islander but never having Haven Brothers. Well just last week, I went to confession and cleansed myself of my sins and clogged my arteries in the process by eating at Haven Brothers. I got a Burger with onions, bacon, and BBQ sauce along with some Onion Rings. Overall not a bad burger and really good onion rings. It was not a super thick burger your classic frozen burger patty size. Haven Brothers is an experience, you aren't really sure what you are going to see. I was a fan of the power line connected to the pole by duct tape. I enjoyed my meal although a little expensive for what you get. The best time to go is late at night. Give it a shot and cross something off your RI Bucket List. You wont be disappointed but you wont be blown away either. read more

It is the Providence Experience. So having been here for about 2 years, I finally had the excuse to be in downtown late and wanted to see what this was all about. So fond the truck, waited in line and got the food. It is fairly expensive for what it is (hot dogs, coffee milk and fries). The quality was good though and nothing to complain about. The thing that makes it worth the trip if you are not part of the bar scene or a local student, is watching the bar scene crowd and the students. There is nothing like watching the well dressed mingling with the folks expressing their individuality. After being witness, I think all of the world leaders should get out late, have some drinks, get that post pub hunger going then join up at Haven Brothers and settle their differences over a that dinning experience. The atmosphere seems to be conducive to the 'cant we all get along' approach to life. Oh, they now take credit cards. read more

Going out in Providence you get to know whats open after the bars close. This place is open very late, one of the few that actually is. Their greasy food does the trick. It fills you up, and makes you wonder the next morning... why did I eat that?? Oh yea, I was drunk. I've still only been here a few times. It's just way to overpriced! They tried to upsell me on crap, but it still ends up being over ten bucks for a small tiny cheese burger, fries and something to wash it down with. The quality doesn't taste all that good either. Haven Brothers has been around forever is a good place to go for that late night snack before starting for home after a night on the town. You just cannot expect a gourmet burger at Haven brothers. This is the wrong place for that. Cheese burgers, Fries, Tuna melt's and other quick sandwiches are all you going to get here which is fine for that 2am filler. They are ok in my book. read more

As the side of the truck says, Haven Brothers is a Providence Tradition. Being a centrally located truck with great late night hours, Haven Brothers offers a great after the bar/gig/dancing meal. Amazing chili cheese hot dogs and fries. Only downsides are that the prices are a bit up there, like for a hot dog, being $4+. And, there are a handful of stools inside for seating and a few tables outside, but for the most part, you'll have to enjoy your meal in your car or on the cold city hall steps. read more

You could learn something from Cara R., who has this exactly right. Haven Bros. is not fine dining. It's not "craft" anything. Stick to the basics -- the stuff Haven Bros. has been making forever: a cheeseburger all the way up; hot dogs; fries. The best thing about Haven Bros. is that there is no place like it. It offers a unique experience that's rooted in a place and that transcends social categories and classes, and those kinds of things are disappearing all too fast. I learned about Haven Bros. when I went to college in Providence in the early 80s. My high school English teacher had gone to PC in the late 60s, and when I told him where I was going to college, he said, "you have to go to Haven Bros. It's next to City Hall. Go late at night. When I was in college, there was this old lady that everyone called "Mary" who just hung out inside and wiped off the counter for you before you sat down. She did not work for Haven Bros. She just did this on her own for tips. And Haven Bros. let her." I went there shortly after arriving at school, and Mary was still there. With the quality of the food, you would expect excellence for the price that you would pay. I had two below average hotdogs and fries for 20$. If it was half the price I would consider going back but never again. I understand restaurants are hurting during this time but please remember the customers are too. On a recent visit, I thought it had slipped a little but it is still the quintessential RI institution. On the way to PPAC for a show, my husband and I are looking for a place to eat before we go in. My husband is a Rhode Island native and knows all of the tiny hidden gems all over the area so he says, "Let's go to Haven Brothers, I know you'll like it." So we take a few turns and before I know it, we are standing outside of a silver truck. I'm like, where's this Haven Brothers. He says, "here" pointing at the truck. So we slide open the door and I see a shiny, spotless clean restaurant inside. We ordered some burgers, onion rings, french fries and soda. . .It was one of the best dates I ever had with my husband and I can't wait to go back. I lived in Prov for 5 years and never ate here. After moving to Boston, I finally got the chance to check out this historic diner car that docks next to City hall all night long. The staff was polite, the food better than I imagined it would be. You're lucky if you can grab an inside seat, otherwise just pray for good weather and you might get a shot at one of the tables just outside. This diner is moved to it's spot next to City Hall each night and carted away each morning...just like the old days for many diners. It's food is greasy, a bit overpriced for what you get and absolutely the best food you'll ever have after a night on the town at 3 am. The real reason to go is to witness the menagerie of people straight out of a Tom Waits song that frequent the joint once night has esconded the city. I'm a Flight Attendant so I'm in a different city just about every night. I've explored all over the world and I have to say, their garbage plate is awesome!! Ordered a Bacon cheddar hotdog and my 10 old brother could of made a better one. The hotdog was boiled , the bun was straight , not even toasted or buttered. And there was a single slice of bacon.
