Aloha Makoa, Thanks…read moreonce again for renting a car to me. We had a wonderful time in Maui--in no small mesure because of your Honda Civic sedan, which took us to lots of places economically and reliably. Next time we come back to Maui, we will definitely rent a car from Makoa again. Warm regards, Carolyn Riding

I'll never rent from the big car rental companies again…read more From the moment I made the reservation, Sandie was incredibly communicative and responsive to all of my questions, both before and after booking. Since I was traveling solo with a 3- and 6-year-old, I really wanted the pickup experience to be as painless as possible, and Makoa delivered exactly that. On the day of arrival, I received a link with clear instructions. I literally walked out of baggage claim, crossed the street, followed the signs and map, and BOOM! -- the car was right there waiting for us. The car I received was exactly what I booked. The AC was strong, and the tank was full. The map was very easy to use. It was oriented correctly, so you can simply hold your phone upright, walk in the direction shown, and find everything clearly marked. One tip: remember to look UP for the letters marking each parking row. A couple of helpful tips for future renters: - Before returning the car, go to Safeway Fuel if you want to avoid battling the long lines at Costco gas. It's also a straight shot to the airport from there. - When returning to the airport, use "OGG long term / short term parking" in Google Maps. Do not follow the "rental car return" road signs, because those lead to the big rental car companies instead. The return process was also very easy. You just upload a photo of where the car is parked and where you placed the parking ticket, and you're done. I would absolutely use Makoa again the next time we're in Maui.

There were def cheaper options but I'm willing to pay more to not have to wait in line and not get a bum car and I've read from other reviews for other companies. I was able to check in online and bypass the line. Although there wasn't much of a line bc there was so much staff available to help. I was able to choose whichever car I wanted. Drop off was even easier drove up, the staff checked everything in a few minutes and we immediately got a receipt for our car. A seemless efficient and easy process. I will most definitely rent from Alamo again. They also provided a list of some great places to explore !

When I got there, the employees in the garage area were friendly and helpful, pointing me to the row of vehicles from which I could choose. At the time I was there, I had quite a few vehicles to choose from. While I had the car, I realized that the key fob lock/unlock button wasn't always functioning, though I was always able to lock and unlock the vehicle by using the door handle button. I mentioned this when I turned the vehicle in, and they credited me for a day's rental for my trouble--something I didn't even ask for. Returning the car was simple, quick, and easy. The charges came through to my credit card exactly as they should have. I would easily do business with Alamo at this airport again based on my experience.

I almost never have good experiences with car rentals, but this was a very good textbook experience…read morewith Budget. Upon arrival at Kahului and retrieving our baggage, we rode the tram to the rental garage. There was no wait at the rental counter and the agent said my car was ready upstairs. I checked the Fastbreak board, grabbed my paperwork, loaded up and we hit the road! You know when you reserve your car, the picture shows a "similar" sized class of car to what you actually get? This is the first time ever that I got the exact car that was in the picture, down to the color! The Candy Red 2025 Mazda CX-90 is a nice vehicle with seating for 7, but I had to fold down the 3rd row, so that I could fit in all our luggage like a Tetris game. Upon our return, I just pulled up to the car return lane, the agent checked me in and I just took the tram back to the terminal. EZ PZ!

I booked a "Staff Selection" rental for the week, thinking I'd get whatever car they had available…read more Instead, we were handed a Tesla Model 3. Normally that might sound great, but we had never driven a Tesla before and nobody at Budget bothered to explain anything. I have Fastbreak, so basically they just told us to go find the car. Our receipt was sitting on a board and that was pretty much the entire interaction. No explanation of how the car worked, how to charge it, or anything else. We ended up having to Google things constantly just to figure out how to operate the car. I eventually found a Budget employee and asked about charging. He asked where we were staying, and when I told him the Hilton, he said, "Oh yeah, they have chargers." Great! Except when we got to the other side of the island, we discovered there was no charging adapter in the car, so we couldn't use the chargers at our Hilton property. Because charging elsewhere takes forever, we ended up having to use Tesla Superchargers four different times just to make sure we had enough charge for the road trips we had planned. That added a lot of unnecessary hassle to our vacation. If I had known beforehand that I was going to be given a Tesla with no adapter and absolutely no instruction on how to use it, I would never have rented this car. And the car itself wasn't exactly impressive. It was extremely dirty, had huge gaps between some of the body panels, and the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. My back hurt pretty much the entire time we had it. The biggest problem, though, was the lack of help from Budget. Every time we tried to get assistance, it felt like we were being brushed off. I don't blame the Tesla itself for everything--I blame Budget for handing us a car we had never driven before without explaining anything, providing no charging adapter, and then essentially leaving us to figure it all out ourselves. For a week-long vacation rental, this was way more hassle than it was worth. If you're booking a Staff Selection car at OGG, be prepared for the possibility of getting a Tesla and being completely on your own.

However, due to my experience on the…read moremainland with Enterprise (via my dealership service advisor), I decided to break from the usual. New pro tip, rent your car via Costco Travel. You get your pick of companies (Enterprise!) and vast auto selection that were quite reasonable. I nervously booked two weeks prior to leaving for Maui (OGG Kahului). But it turned out to be easy peasy once I landed. 1. Take a few free magazines and maps from the airport kiosks - they're helpful and has discounts too. 2. Take the tram across the street from baggage claim to the centralized rental car hub. 3. Shocked as there was no line as I approached the Enterprise customer service desk! Very personable individual who went through my contract and options. I declined additional insurance coverage, because my policy back home had me covered. I did opt for the prepaid gas (back on 8/26/25 it was $4/gallon). The new compact I had was so economical, I only spent an additional $30 before returning it on 9/2/25 slightly above E. Just make the best decision for your holiday needs. Note: Heed the warnings about driving in appropriate areas while on the island. I did not take my new compact off roading on unpaved, rugged routes! 4. I went to the second floor where I was greeted by another Enterprise person who pointed out the cars I was able to select from. Loaded the luggage into the trunk, took a 360 degree photo of the vehicle & license plate just in case, and familiarized myself with the car features. 5. Drove to the checkout gate where another airport person (who had just returned from my home state visiting family) finished off the car rental process and off on my merry way. 6. Returning to the airport, give yourself ample time to deal with OGG logistics. I followed the signage for car rental return. I drove to the appointed drop off area, got the vehicle checked back in without any issues, rode the tram back to the terminal, cleared the TSA and US agricultural checkpoints, and received my Enterprise receipt by email by the time I was at my departure gate/waiting area. Super customer service across the board from the OGG/Kahului Enterprise staff on 8/26/25 and 9/2/25. Sometimes one has to break from the usual and get pleasantly surprised. Aloha and mahalo!
