    11-2-24. Vacation Time!

It has been a while since I've flown Hawaiian Airlines! I love their service, their spirit, and their warmth once you are on your flight to the Islands. Once you get on the plane and hear the Hawaiian music, you already feel the "Ohana"!

Flew Hawaiian recently from SJC to Honolulu. The ground staff were very nice and friendly. The flight staff seemed indifferent. No TVs even in First Class but they do give you a ipad that you can use to view movies. Only served breakfast on the 6-hour flight and no snacks which was odd and annoying. On the plus side and most importantly flight was on time.

Would you like to start your Hawaiian vacation before you get to the islands? Fly Hawaiian and begin your Getaway as soon as you step onboard. Hawaiian melodies, tropical scents, and mood lighting will transport you even before taking off. Most importantly, the crew members' warm hospitality with a smile and friendly Aloha spirit is a breath of fresh plumeria-scented air. Flying from SJC-HNL is on an A321 Neo aircraft. Flying from SFO-HNL is on an A330 double aisle aircraft.

I have flown Hawaiian 20+ times and I have never had a problem. I loved when I used my Barclay credit card and earned miles. I no longer have this card but I earn miles from travel. I keep enough miles to qualify for Gold status and get 2 free check bags! I fly coach and though I don't care for the main food, I like the complimentary sides and drink. The app is easy to use and I like the chat feature. They have helped me reschedule flights and issued refunds with ease.

Lihue on a rainy day in December

$614 to fly one way to fly economy from San Jose to Lihue? We had made reservations to stay at Lawai Beach Resort in Koloa on Kauai, arriving December 13. Three months ahead of time the Alaska Airlines economy fare for the one way flight was $614! Checked Hawaiian Airlines, and got a fare of about $218 for that day, San Jose to Lihue via Honolulu. Made reservations on HA, but not first without trouble trying to get a new password for my HA account on a Saturday, and could not get seating positions until Monday 2-3-2 seating configuration in economy, so chose one of the last available window and adjacent aisle seat positions, at the A and B positions on an ancient Boeing 767. Day of the flight, found out the hard way that they had retired the Boeing 767 and introduced the Airbus A320neo. I was in the B position, and found myself in the dreaded middle seat, with a 3-3 seating configuration in economy. Airbus A320neo, billed as the most fuel efficient 3000+ nautical mile range jet airliner, when introduced in 2016, with a fuel consumption of 2.41 liters per passenger seat per 100 km. Very deep and tall overhead compartments, tall enough to fit carry on luggage standing 14" sideways, like in a Boeing 737/900, rather than 10" tall compartments, wheels down style, seen on Boeing 737/700s, the second leg of my HA flight. Four bathrooms, one in the front for first class, two in the middle of the plane, and only one in the back of the plane. Big change from the 737-900s seen on Alaska Airlines, which still have one bathroom for first class, and three bathrooms in the extreme rear for economy class. Wife took the window seat to get some sleep, and I got the middle seat. Lucked out in sitting next to an attractive slim young lady on the aisle, so was able to use both armrests most of the time. Have found out the hard way that most men in the aisle seat will hog the armrest next to the middle seat, particularly if it is a lady in that seat, as they know the women don't want to touch their arms on the armrest! Only two rows from the single bathroom in the rear, which I used when the young lady got up also. Free hot meal is one of the few perks that Hawaiian Airlines has over other airlines. Free breakfast meal was a Pau Hana Café egg, Colby jack and tomato sandwich with a cookie and oatmeal square, along with guava juice. Could not taste nor see the egg nor the tomato in the heated bread roll, only the cheese. Not a cheese fan, so it was a big disappointment. Arrived in Honolulu without fanfare, before boarding a Hawaiian Airlines 1990s era Boeing 737/700 for the short flight to Lihue. No cell phone nor tablet chargers in the 737/700 economy section, unlike the 737/800s. 10" opening in the overhead compartments. By the way, Southwest will start flights to Honolulu later this year. They use the Boeing 737max 8s, introduced in 2017, with a fuel consumption of 2.13 liters per passenger seat per 100 km flown, the most fuel efficient 3000+ nautical mile range plane flying, the main competitor to the Airbus A320neo which we flew. Now that the Boeing 737 max 8s are grounded , SW may have to use their Boeing 737/800s, like Alaska Airlines, or use 737/700s like Aloha Airlines, to fly from the mainland to Hawaii.

Beware of airline gimmicks advertising their lowest fare. I didn't expect this from a reputable local company. This was a disappointing experience booking with HA. When they advertise their Winter Sale as the lowest fare, I thought it was a good opportunity to secure bargain fare for our scheduled tournament in January. I feel terrible asking all the parents to purchase their tickets. I was too gullible to believe them, in less than a week HA dropped the price as much as $200. What frustrated me was, after the Winter sale fare, the lower fare is still on sale to the present day. HA claimed no price adjustment once past 24 hours after purchase or even offering credit for future travel. Lesson learn from this, buying air ticket habit needs to change. It doesn't mean buying the ticket early you will get good pricing.

Chicken Alfredo sandwich + chips - no vegetarian options flying afternoon :(

Hawaiian airlines has earned two more stars in my book since my very first visit. When I visited Hawaiian the first time, it was completely unorganized, with no designated line to guide you to baggage check in or anything! I remember it was so messy, we actually MISSED our flight back home and had to stay another day in paradise! But fast forward 5 years, and it was a lot more seamless of a process. We went in the designated line, and there were a lot of staff members ready to help and answer any questions. Surprisingly, it was much easier and they didn't require you to remove laptops out of your backpack - which is very new! Shoes are required to be taken off (even if slip inside or flip flops) and they are very good about advising passengers before checking bags through. They do give bracelets (paper ones) to buy pass through the airport without having to be extra screened due to COVID 19. This was super convenient, and I recommend everyone check the Hawaiian website to make sure you're prepared! The food on the flight there was yummy - an egg and cheese sandwich , Honolulu cookie company chocolate chip cookie, and an energy snack that was gluten free and low sugar! On the way back home , we got a chicken Alfredo sandwich with mushrooms and a bag of Fritos. This was disappointing to me, because I'm vegetarian and didn't get the chance to eat much before the flight. When I asked the flight attendant if they had any vegetarian options he just flatly said "no, sorry." I hope in the future theres at least some inclusivity in meals or at least a second option in case patrons have a plant based diet. Otherwise, the flight was comfortable (minus the extreme cold AC). Coincidentally- they sell blankets too by the time you notice! I ended up buying a blanket because comfort was priority - especially on a 5hour flight. Overall, a better experience, just disappointed about the food.

Hawaiian Airlines does not have a lounge at San Jose Norman Mineta Airport but we still prefer it over Delta, United, and South West. Once on the air, the cabin food service is absolutely above par. We got the HA credit card and so far have earned 2 free trips to the island this year. It's really worth it to look into such good deal.

I guess even in all good marriages there are some issues and thats exactly what this experience felt like. I had been very pleased with their service in the times I have flown them but a few days ago, I was slated fo fly from San Francisco back to San Diego and thats when things went awry. I got to the airport earlier than usual as I had to take an important call so I was there 3 hours prior to departure. Luckily, I came early because when I went to check in, there was an error. I then got in a long customer service line and thats when I learned my flight from SFO was being diverted to San Jose and thats where my departure would be. Once I get to the front of the line and have a customer service agent help me, I find out that San Jose airport is about an hour away! I asked if I could be on a later flight out of SFO or SJC and there were no available flights. So, my only option was to get to SJC as fast as I could and get on my diverted flight or risk being stranded. Alaska Airlines did give me a voucher to get to SJC but the entire time I was on edge if I would make it in time! Luckily everything worked out and when I got on my flight from SJC to SAN, the flight was half empty. SJC is also a pretty hassle free airport too. Id definitely prefer to fly in and out of this airport. I have never had this happen where a flight just randomly diverted, it was a bit annoying honestly. But, the reality is is that I am probably going to have to fly this airline again, no options really. Sigh...

We had just checked our bags and were heading toward security when my daughter--who literally just turned 18--realized she had left her driver's license inside her checked suitcase. In a total panic, we rushed back to the counter and saw her bag already moving down the belt, disappearing behind the rubber curtains. We flagged down a Delta agent named Lydia, and she was a total superstar. Without a second of hesitation, she sprinted to the emergency stop and halted the conveyor. The bag was already through the curtains, so she actually had to reach into the "void" of the baggage highway to physically haul the suitcase back out so my daughter could get her ID. If she hadn't moved that fast, our entire trip would have been derailed. What was most impressive was her attitude. Even though we were stressed and rushing, Lydia remained incredibly positive, calm, and reassuring throughout the whole ordeal. If you're flying out of San Jose, hope you get Lydia at the counter. She turned a potential travel disaster into a minor hiccup with a smile. Delta, give this woman a raise!

I was so happy when they announced the SJC to PEK route last year. Since then I have flown San Jose to Beijing three times with them. It is so so so nice to have a car pick me up at my home in Willow Glen and be at the airport in 10 minutes or less. SJC customs clearance is also much faster than SFO. For the uninitiated, Hainan Airlines is very very Chinese. The flight crew speak pretty good English but you need to work with them and repeat some things occasionally. Don't let this be an issue for you, they are so courteous and the service really shines, just let the language barrier slide. For long haul flights the Asian carriers are way better than the US carriers in the area of service. United and Delta tend to have cranky attendants who get totally mean later in the flight. The airlines like Hainan, Singapore and Cathay are consistently pleasant. I especially love how Hainan Airlines attendants treat elderly travelers, there is a genuine respect for elders which is a beautiful cultural thing. The food is just ok. You will generally be happier with the Chinese selections going from PEK to SJC. Going from SJC to PEK you may like the Western options better-- although the menus are the same both directions the foodservice people in the US don't do a good job on the Chinese food. Again, not really a big deal, who flys to dine? Just bring some snacks. I brought sushi on from Sushi Boat last time and ate it for my first meal. The inflight entertainment is good. The plane seating is on the roomy side. If you fly mid-week you may find open seats or even an open row to stretch out, I love that. The only other negative is the arrival and departure at Beijing. They don't have a jetway contract at PEK, so they put you way out on the tarmac where you have to use a metal stairway to deplane, then they bus you to the terminal to/from the plane. This adds time to arrival and departure and may require you to unpack your heavy coat to wear on the tarmac in winter. Also on arrival the baggage takes a painful amount of time to come in-- the plane is really far from the terminal so the baggage truck takes a long long time to unload and it's too small to handle all the baggage in one load. The first half of the bags don't arrive for 30 minutes. The second half is around an hour later. Big bummer. Overall the great service, cheap fares and convenience of a San Jose to Beijing direct route greatly outweigh the small issues for me. Hainan Airlines is a great carrier who mostly gets it right! If they could get a jetway contract at PEK to facilitate better arrivals and departures I would give them 5 stars.

We decided to treat ourselves to first class, and honestly... we may have ruined coach forever. Every single leg of the trip was fantastic. The service from the flight attendants was attentive without being overbearing, the pilots delivered incredibly smooth flights, and everything just felt seamless. Our flights were impressively on time overall. The only hiccup was a short delay leaving Orlando, with about a 20-minute taxi on the tarmac--but that was out of the crew's control, and they more than made up for it once we were in the air. The food was consistently excellent--served hot and surprisingly delicious for airline meals. And the little touches? They made all the difference. From the warm towel service to the champagne at boarding, great drink options, and top-notch attention throughout the flight, it felt like a true experience rather than just transportation. We're still debating what my husband loved most--the champagne, the service, or just being pampered the entire way. Either way, this birthday trip set the bar very high. Five stars all the way.
