I'll say this about SWA... SouthWest Airlines used to be the party people type air crew that were vibrant in personality, friendly in demeanor and overall gave good vibes. The new employees or maybe trained attitudes are more serious, strict and no fun. Prior to SWA switching to assigned seats and tiered pricing, the airline felt friendly, but since formalizing their seating into elitist zones, you somehow might feel like "Rosa Parks" being relegated to the "back of the bus" if you opt for the standard lowest fare/rates and get stuck in "Zone 8" the last to board the airplane. The lame aspect is, even if there's room in other parts of the plane with vacant seats the stewardesses (flight crew) will sternly warn you and dictate that you must stay in your own zone. I "get it" they don't want to give any "free upgrades" and are all about the revenue and upselling for upgraded seating. I hope SWA goes back to their former charming environment with open seating. It's what made SWA unique and preferred by so many customers. read more

Simply put, Southwest went from the being the most customer focused airline to the worst! Their new seating and boarding process is horrible! When boarding started at San Jose (SJC), after 20 minutes of active boarding (Flight WN 3088 to Spokane on 12 Aug) only two handicap travelers were loaded. They let everyone at the gate wonder aimlessly until they put the line-up signs up...which didn't go up until AFTER they called group 1. Once on board, it was little different from other airlines. One thing to point out with the "new" Southwest. If you buy a regular ticket and don't spend extra on a seat, you WILL only have the very back few rows to choose from and you WILL be assigned the very last boarding group. Then, at boarding, you'll be forced to check a bag. In other words, you'll CANNOT escape their new extra fees...which they now add to EVERY service. read more

Lucky Number Seven: The Private Jet Experience at Commercial Prices! I recently flew out of San Jose on an early morning Southwest flight bound for Burbank--connecting on to Nashville--and it turned out to be one of the most memorable travel experiences I've ever had. Before we boarded in San Jose, the gate agent gave a hilarious, upbeat announcement warning us that there were only a handful of people flying. I truly wish I had recorded his speech! He set such a fun, positive tone for an early flight. Sure enough, when I stepped onto the plane, it was practically empty--just seven passengers total, including me. It felt like we had chartered our own private plane to Burbank! While our second leg from Burbank to Nashville was completely full, the fantastic service never wavered. The entire crew was warm, friendly, and attentive from start to finish. As I've come to expect with Southwest, the flight was smooth, and with only seven people getting off in Burbank, it was easily the fastest deboarding experience of my life. Flew on Southwest the other day and the experience was rather mediocre. Despite the incoming flight being on-time, it took a full hour to board the 737, even with assigned seating. Wifi was complimentary for Rapid Rewards customers and worked sporadically. There were snacks offered during the flight as well as a couple drink services during the 3.75 hour flight. Service was extremely leisurely. Due to the leisurely boarding, our flight left 40 minutes late and also arrived 40 minutes late. Transiting passengers seemed somewhat frazzled. read more

Not sure why I still fly Southwest after the many years of on and off disappointment. Many delayed flights and 2 Decembers ago was the famous Southwest-gate where something like all the planes were delayed. Today, they are 50 minutes late (plane still not here at the time of writing) for an 80-minute flight. My track record has been 50 percent late flights, some have cause us to have to stay overnight and then go through a painful process just to file claims. read more

Always thought SW air did a great job. Requested assistance and a wheelchair. Clerk on phone told me just to go to the door and there would-be wheelchairs with assistance waiting for me. Nobody there. I go to ask an employee just outside, and they wouldn't speak to me. "Not open yet" the only other opportunity is to go where people are checking baggage. I dont have baggage to check. Southwest is a wonderful option in SJC to fly out of the Bay Area. Lots of affordable flights out of a relatively nice looking Terminal B that continues to develop newer food options. My husband and I often fly Southwest but NJ was so amazing I had to do this review. So they now have started the assigned seating. What made this trip to Vegas different was sitting beside NJ and observing how he loved his job. This Southwest employee explained EVERYTHING and noted the assigned seating is new for them as for us. He welcomed flyers up to his podium for questions and referred those with flight agent questions to the staff that could help them. I was impressed with his demeanor and professionalism. He smiled and communicated warmly with each passenger. Can you believe he literally spoke to every client and said something as they walked away! True customer service is sometimes hard to find! Usually I have a great experience with southwest. This time I'm not sure if it's this new airplane or what, but it was so hot. The air conditioning vents were barely blowing any air. I was on a flight from Honolulu to San Jose so of course it was a long flight. The stewardess was nice always and they have great customer service. Southwest is going through a lot of changes. All the things that made it special and unique. The free bags, the non assigned seating. Now all those are going away making the same as any other airlines. The food they give is a couple almonds crackers and Oreos for that flight so make sure you pack a lunch. They serve you drinks throughout the flight so that's good. I will see how southwest is with all the new changes next year and see if I want to continue to fly with them. read more

Not a fan of this airline. I haven't flown with them since the policy updates earlier this year, and honestly, I don't plan to anytime soon. One of my biggest issues is the seating, it's based on when you check in, which just feels outdated and stressful. You shouldn't have to set an alarm just to avoid a bad seat. Southwest Airlines is always our choice for flights to vacation destinations. Airfare prices are a good deal when you book early. Plus you get 2 checked items per person free of charge. Employees are always welcoming, friendly and helpful. However, today I feel some of them were in a Grinch spirit of a mood. The two ladies at the desk were Shouting out commands and being somewhat unapproachable. I braved the counter with a smile and greeted her handing her my passport. She was friendly, however, she almost forgot to ticked my bag so I pointed it out her and she ran after it stopping the belt and preventing it to be lost forever. I thought she was gonna be upset because I pointed it out to her, however, she said good call you caught me and laughed and gave a smile. That was a close call. Wow you know it's pretty pathetic now that SW charges for everything. To say on an empty flight to get to your assigned seats because you get what they pay for! Then when we land telling everyone to get off the plane! As much as you have to pay for travel these days you'd think the flight attendants and pilots would be considerate. Just got back from Buffalo by way of a stopover in Baltimore. SWA is definitely not what it used to be. The flight from Baltimore to San Jose was late by almost an hour. The crew on the plane was good, no issues. But SWA operation is just incompetent. At Baltimore, once everyone has boarded, the captain informed us that the mechanics need to work on the plane to apply a "seal". That took about 30 minutes. The actual fight of about 5 and 1/2 hours was normal. Once we finally landed, the plane taxi up to the gating area and stopped, because there is another plane at OUR gate, still boarding. We waited about 15 min. The captain informed us the other plane has completed boarding and will be moving away from the gate. 10 minutes later, we still did not move. The captain again came on and told us, the other plane was having problem "closing" its door, so it could not move away from the gate. We waited another 10 minutes before our plane docked at the gate! Another 30 minutes lost. All told, a symphony of operational errors, from plane maintenance to schedule to boarding to crew training, etc. read more

Quality of gate agents terrible. Flew SJC to LAS flight 994 on Dec 27th out of gate 21. Gate agent was threatening passengers, treating many with disrespect in regards to carry on bags. I get that they have limited space, just like any airline, but his woman was so annoying and overly disrespectful to passengers. Threatening to send passengers to customer service and missing flight. Threatening to hold up the flight until all of group B gate checks carry on. The annoying rant went on for an hour!! I'm a professional flyer and have never experienced this level of poor service. read more

Then I got on the flight, and they asked for me to move my seat after I got situated- so I did. Where are the perks? Where are the little expressions of gratitude? I fly pretty often with Southwest Airlines on business. And sometimes I use this carrier for personal trips. Really it all depends on the price. Southwest still has open seating so if you happen to get in Group A you will have a good chance of finding the seat you really want. If it's not a full flight , I prefer the window seat or the aisle. However, if you're in Group B or C.. seats are slim pickings. Which is always the case for me when I'm traveling on business. I either get stuck sitting all the way in the back or in the middle seat. And the seats are really tight with little to no leg room. And I hate to have my seat partner get up everytime I have to stretch my legs or use the restroom. From TSA, to boarding to landing everyone was amazing! I flew out early afternoon and the gentlemen boarding us was very loud (so you can hear him talking on the intercom) and helpful. He was very nice to each passenger. Then upon boarding the flight crew was amazing! The lead flight attendant greeted each passenger and noted to us she has been with SW for 17 years (I think) and she makes sure to greet everyone passenger that gets on board. She was very genuine and wanted to ensure we had a nice flight. She did note her goal is to get 100% responses of greetings back and she would buy everyone's first round. Unfortunately our flight didn't make it. But it was just a reminder, it takes 2 seconds to greet someone back and be nice. read more

Never had problems before with this airline, but the last flight from Las Vegas to San Jose (WN 4748 on 2/22/2026) was ruined by the flight attendants. My wife was in the middle seat, and the flight attendant gave snacks to both her neighbors totally ignoring her. Then we asked another attendant that offered drinks why my wife didn't get snacks. My hubby and I will ALWAYS choose Southwest Airlines if they fly to our destination! The service is amazing, prices are great, and it's EXTREMELY rare that they run a few minutes late, in fact, they usually manage to get there a little earlier than scheduled. We have NEVER had any issues with our luggage, several times I've needed mobility assistance, and they are there waiting for me, helping me with my luggage and checking it for me. Rude staff who aggressively forces you to check in your carry-ons. My flight was WN3586 SJO to Oregon. This rude man -tall, white, kind of feminine- did not asked but demanded that I check in my carry-on while I was waiting in line to board. I told him that I had delicate things that can break. He couldn't care less. Did not apologize for the inconvenience and had the audacity to raise his voice at me and ignore me. Then, he proceeded to make small talk to my partner and kid in a pleasant way. I voiced my displeasure in a calmed way and he ignored me. To add more insult, once inside the plane, we saw this woman board with 3 pcs of luggage -purse, small luggage, and back pack. Also, the landing was very harsh. Gave me a scare. The baggage woman Alex. Very poor attitude. The very tall woman Alex talked to very condescending to my immigrant mom. Not the best way to start getting on a plane. I guess you could say she holds a lot of baggage and it seeps out in her work. Customers should feel greeted and like workers are ready to help and not make customers feel embarrassed for not knowing new rules. We were unsure with some new rules and they didn't show sympathy, instead we got very unprofessional energy. I even tried to chipper them up with my good energy but we felt completely depleted. Please train these people to greet and make people feel safe at your places. Tall mean lady Alex was not it. I was treated horribly by the Southwest gate receptionist employee at gate #407 flight WN3674 ---Ontario airport ---yesterday Saturday May 9th 5:50 pm departure. The main Southwest desk at the Ontario airport printed and handed me a wrong boarding pass ---and because of that I was sidelined ---yelled at ---and treated rudely at the gate. I truly do not understand how any US airline can hire an employee like the one I encountered and hope to be successful.... read more

Be careful when booking Southwest's Basic fare. We chose it because it was a short flight and we didn't care about seat assignments. However, when we checked in just seconds after check-in opened, we were placed on standby with no seat. Because my friend and I had already booked activities at our destination, we felt forced to pay extra to upgrade and secure seats, which was stressful and unexpected. Southwest should be much clearer that a Basic ticket does not guarantee a seat, even with immediate check-in. read more

Lowest fares, no flight change fees, simple and easy to book online, great rewards program for free flights via points earned, good communication via text/email, no assigned seats for now (though this is changing in the near future), competent staff on flights, consistent and reliable (nothing extra, no complaints), and rarely experience severely delayed flights. In fact on my recent flight from SJC to Portland this past weekend, we arrived 15 minutes early (which is rare on any airline). Just a smooth experience flying Southwest. After many years, it remains my first choice of airlines when traveling anywhere, mainly for the excellent value. After our plane landed in San Jose, my wife left her backpack in the bathroom inside the secure area at San Jose Airport. We could not go back in to get the bag, because we didn't have a ticket for an outgoing flight, so we were stuck.
