I got a chicken plate through take-out yesterday and wasn't too impressed by the plain chicken, basic (albeit generous) serving of white rice, and underwhelming macaroni salad for $12. After reading other reviews and tasting my siblings' beef plate, I may have just ordered the wrong thing. I think Hawaiian Grill is doing a good job with consistency and service, though there is definitely room for improvement as far as flavor goes. This review isn't based on their food as I haven't eaten here, but based on customer service. I called 1/22 when they opened asking about catering for a party on 1/27. However, the person I spoke w/didn't seem to have clear understanding on what I was asking. According to the pictures on Yelp, they offer a catering menu but he had no idea what I was talking about and said they only offer a la carte trays, not packages (like the pics on Yelp). I decided to just message them on Yelp hoping there would be someone else I can discuss about catering. The next day, I sent a message on 1/23 around 8 am and someone named Maggie responded by early afternoon providing a link to their catering menu. The link was for Ramen 101 which does offer Hawaiian BBQ for catering. She added at the end of her note to contact her if I had more questions. I replied back 2 mins later noting that the link was for Ramen 101 and wanted to confirm this was correct, and also asked if there was a number where she could be reached to discuss catering. No response. I sent another note on 1/24 around 9 pm, and crickets. Keep in mind, the party was 2 days away at that point. If this didn't work out, then I would need to explore other options. Well, it's Mon 1/29. The party is over and done with, and I still haven't heard from Maggie. THIS IS A WARM LEAD! I called in to potentially give them money and nothing. Guess business is booming and they don't need the business. Maybe their food is good. Maybe it isn't. But because of this, I'm ok with never finding out. It's my second time at Hawaiian Grill Express. First time I was at the San Leandro location, I liked the food, but the place was pretty dirty and plaza was full, it was hard to find parking spot. But this Dublin location is the best! Staff was super friendly, place was very clean and it's in the new plaza. Very good location! Last time I had chicken bbq, this time I got mix (chicken+beef) bbq. BBQ comes with white rice, salad and pasta in mayo. Meat was juicy, but rice and salad was little dry, but you can get some souses for free (for example teriyaki souse). Pretty big lunch for less than $15. The hamburger patty had a lot of filler, and was a little sweet (I think it should be savory). The brown gravy was thin and without flavor. And the macaroni salad also had almost no taste at all. This place has stayed consistently good since it first opened. We were weekly regulars for a long time till covid hit. They are super fast at getting the orders ready - like Hawaiian fast food. Our go-to orders are usually BBQ chicken and chicken Katsu. Always a generous portion. Check out their Cajun fries too. Surprisingly good. And their party trays have always been a great cost effective party host or potluck dish. Parking is a bit of a pain. They have quite a few shops here but not many parking spaces in this section of the strip. You can easily park across in the main parking lot but just not as convenient. read more

I am so thankful for you guys being here and open during the shelter in place. This is my go to spot for my Hawaiian food fix! I grew up eating fast food style Hawaiian food at the local "L&L Drive Inn" but the Yelp reviews for the one in Dublin were not good. Luckily I found this place on Yelp which had significantly better reviews and I can see why. The portions are large and the food is cooked right on. The service is professional and quick. Their condiment section is overflowing with sauces (katsu, Siracha, teriyaki sauce you name it). I love the bbq chicken and chicken katsu mix plate lunch. It comes with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop mac salad. Recently we bought the family meal which I highly recommend! It comes with 3 types of main dish and then 6 scoops of rice and 4 scoops of Mac salad!! I'll try to get pics next time -- I was too hungry! However I did get pics of the juice! I came here back before the shelter in place thing went into effect, but I'm really happy that it looks like they're still doing delivery/takeout right now! I'm probably going to have to pick up something at some point over the next couple weeks because I'm getting kinda tired of Chinese food... In any case, I went here with a friend a little over a month ago and ordered the combo chicken plate (Hawaiian bbq chicken + curry chicken katsu) which also comes with 2 scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and veggies all for $13.09! The portions are generous (enough that I actually had leftovers to spare!) so you definitely get a lot of bang for your buck! We also ended up ordering the malasadas for dessert. I got the chicken combo plate which came with BBQ grilled chicken, chicken katsu, rice, mac salad, and some boiled veggies. The bbq chicken was so fresh and tender and grilled to perfection, and the chicken katsu was also crispy and tasty. They also have katsu sauce which is pretty good! Very disgusted by the service tonight. I had my younger brother pick up my phone order. Typical pay at the register and pick up. I was told the male cashier was very rude and bullied my brother to giving a "suggested gratuity" for a PICK UP PHONE ORDER. This is not a dine-in restaurant where you get service like refilling drinks. And this was not through a third party pick up app. I get it that times are hard, but I find that this restaurant's professionalism is gone. Do not force others to tip you. Very sad to hear how this business' tactics are being used during the pandemic. I would suggest others who come and pick up their orders to watch for this disgusting practice. Came here a couple days ago and ordered the Kalabi Short ribs plate, which consisted of 2 pieces of short ribs, rice, Mac salad and some veggies. The short ribs were a decent size but a little dry for our likings. The Mac and cheese lacked flavor but it was still good. We also ordered the teriyaki chicken "mini" plate. Don't let the term "mini" fool you, the plate was enough to feed my 2 year old and I twice.. not enough rice though, we ALWAYS need more rice ;) The service was fast, although I did call it in. The holidays are around the corner and that means a trip to the Livermore... wait I mean San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore, CA. After walking a lap around the Outlets, chances are you're glad you saved so much money buying stuff but dread what will show up on the credit card bill. There's a Starbucks, Chipotle and a Food Court on the premise and an Asian Plaza along with a Panda Express across the street. I looked on Yelp and came across Hawaiian Grill Express just across the freeway by the Target and Lucky. It's located in the same plaza as T4 and Gum Kuo. The setup is similar to an L&Ls. I ordered a mini plate of Curry Chicken Katsu with all Mac. The Katsu was crispy and the curry sauce was a plenty. I used the Katsu sauce for some of my Katsu and some of the curry for the veggies. For a mini-plate, the portions definitely felt big and was satisfying.(hmmm, mac salad) When in the Tri-Valley area, this is a solid option for Hawaiian Food which I think is better than the California L&Ls and even Ono's. read more

I got about a dozen medium-sized shrimp (tail off) sauteed with vegetables and copious amounts of garlic. The plate also came with a healthy portion of rice, and another sizeable portion of macaroni salad. Admittedly, I should have refused all of those carbs but everything was very good, so I have no regrets. :) The cashier invited me to take some of their sauces with my to-go order. I helped myself to some teriyaki sauce as well as some katsu sauce. The teriyaki sauce was a little bit salty for my taste but the katsu sauce tasted amazing over the rice. This time around for lunch, I only wanted something simple. I opted for chicken musubi since it's healthier than spam. Someone picked up my lunch for me. When I got my lunch and looked at it, there was such disappointment. The pieces were oddly sized than the usual size of a musubi - to me anyways. I like the Barbecue Chicken Platter, but I rated this visit 1 star for their poor customer service. Most times I've ordered it, the cooks overcook the chicken and it comes out cooked dark brown and looks almost burnt. I don't like burnt food, so I told the lady when I ordered that I wanted the chicken cooked, but not overcooked and dark brown. I said I wouldn't be happy if it was cooked too brown. When I got my order, three out of the four pieces was cooked ok, but the bottom piece was overcooked. I asked the woman to replace that piece and the cook refused. I had to repeat what I said to the woman who took my order several times before he FINALLY gave me a price of chicken that wasn't overcooked. Since I told the woman up front what I wanted, I shouldn't have had to argue with the cook and insist on replacing the pieces of chicken that were overcooked.
