I asked if I could have the mac salad removed from the plate, and they still said no. Eventually they agreed to substitute rice for mac salad. I usually eat at L&L in Dublin or a place in San Ramon called Hula Wok, but my last visits there served BBQ Beef with a lot of stringy and chewy fat. Today I ordered takeout in person, the Mini BBQ Beef for $9.99. It was quick and easy. The food was ready in just a few minutes packed to go in a small plastic bag, a few napkins, plastic fork and knife. I enjoyed my lunch at Fallon Park. I really liked it. The Mini BBQ Beef comes with a scoop of white rice, scoop of macaroni salad, steamed cabbage, carrots and broccoli and of course the BBQ beef. Wow the beef was great, hardly any of that stringy chewy fat and it had a great taste, not to salty or sweet. We ordered through Yelp yesterday. The checkout process - not sure if it's Yelp or GrubHub - was problematic using one of our visa debit/credit cards. Not just mine, but mine and my wife's. Very strange. And we know they're valid cards. So unfortunately we had to use a different card but it did work then. Card issues aside, food was tasty. Chicken katsu, grilled chicken, and combo plates were good but just a tad bit dry. And some pieces of broccoli were really hard, almost like "biting into a bone" hard. This is not normal as we usually order in person and the food typically comes out perfect. I chalk this up to covid and being short staffed, but was still a little disappointed. Wow what a pleasant surprise. Tried it for the first time and got the Chicken Katsu plate. Turned out to be one of the best lunches I've ever had in this area. Perfectly cooked chicken. Crispy outside juicy inside and not greasy at all, and you get A LOT of food for your money. I'm usually not a fan of macaroni salad but theirs was great and I almost finished all of it. I came in with my family and the girl and guy at the front just kept looking at us while we were deciding what to get. The guy helped us out and was very monotonous with his responses. East Bay has a great Hawaiian bbq joint and it's Hawaiian Grill Express. The restaurant is clean, the staff are friendly, and the food was delicious! Bonus points for their large portions and their turnaround is fast. Our phone order was ready when we called it in and drove over. We got two orders of the bbq chicken plate and one order of the curry chicken plate. Three plates fed four adults and three small kids. The curry chicken plate was basically a Hawaiian bbq chicken plate with curry on top, but it was delicious. I kind of wished it had more curry. If you're in Dublin, give them a try! read more

I am really disappointed with my experience today at Hawaiian Grill Express. We have been coming to this restaurant since it opened over 10 years ago. We placed a pick-up order this evening. As I was walking in the man behind the counter was blowing his nose. No big deal. I expected that he would wash his hands at the sink next to the register before he served our food and put the silverware into he bag. When he didn't, I asked him if he could please wash his hands before handling the food as I had just watched him blow his nose. I watched as he turned and ran his hands under the water for literally 2 seconds. He used no soap, although it was next to the faucet. I was pretty grossed out as he then turned and handled our silverware and food. I have to admit, I was a little shocked. Luckily, since I was bringing it home, we put it in the air fryer to kill anything before eating it. That actually improved the food. I hope that management will go over proper handling of food and sanitation with the staff. Not sure we will be going back soon. read more

Parking is a little wonky since the mall is made up of big box stores with wide open parking, plus lots of small shops and restaurants with little alcoves of parking. I ordered the Mixed BBQ plate, which is a spin on Hawaiian style plate lunch. BBQ short rib, BBQ chicken, Teri beef. Side veg was cooked broccoli and cabbage, and I opted for brown rice. Counter service was friendly and quick. The meal was made quickly and portion size is generous for the price. Meat quality was.... okay. A bit on the overly fatty side. That's to say that fatty BBQ is a good thing to me...but the plate had a little too much of the "good thing!" LOL! Overall, the flavors were good- though how much it's really replicating Hawaiian plate lunch is questionable, other than the name of the restaurant. There are big dispensers of "teriyaki" and "katsu" sauces with pump handles and sauce cups for you to help yourself to... having tried both, I would NOT at all call them "teriyaki " or "katsu!" I really don't know what they are- but they are flavors that are never found on Hawaii plate lunch! They were just awful!! Mostly sweet and slimy! Good news is if they suit your fancy, you can pump it out for free! To me the odd thing is the restaurant can actually buy a decent teriyaki sauce and real tonkatsu sauce at Costco and Safeway! All in all- Hawaiian Grill Express reminds me of the many "Hawaiian BBQ" places that are around. They do have other things on the menu I would go back and try. But if I'm really looking for plate lunch- I think I tend to favor L&L.
