I stopped by here yesterday with my father for an afternoon snack. We had been out on the water all morning fishing when I checked Yelp for a shave ice place that was open. Even though Hawaiian Ninja Shave Ice was about 20 minutes away, the pictures made it look worth the drive, so we headed down the coast. Hawaiian Ninja Shave Ice is located on the second floor of a strip mall and only allows one group inside at a time since the space is tiny. Thankfully they have a large menu posted outside where you can wait, along with some outdoor seating. After looking over the menu I decided on a small Ube Coconuts, which was described as ube syrup, coconut syrup, ube haupia cream, and shredded coconut. I was given a buzzer and about five minutes later it went off and I picked up my shave ice. It looked incredible, especially with the deep purple color and the ube haupia cream piled high on top. As for the taste, it absolutely delivered. The ice was shaved fine and the ube and coconut syrups were evenly distributed throughout. Both flavors were delicious. The ube haupia cream really put it over the top with its richness and great flavor. This was easily one of the best shave ices I have had, and I have had quite a few across the Hawaiian islands. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. It was good enough that the next time my wife is on the Big Island, I will make sure to bring her here. read more

The flavor board you see on the wall here is pretty amazing and the different options for a shave ice. So many good things to choose from. But this time I chose the POG the pineapple, orange guava but no ice cream. My partner chose the matcha with ice cream and he loved his. Mine was good, but it just didn't have the burst of flavors. I was hoping for, seemed to be more muted in this particular selection. Selection. We both ordered the mediums which turned out to be more than we thought we'd need, but we did our best to finish them. I felt like it was a little pricey for the area, but I know things have gone up in the past year or so. Would I go back? Great after hiking spot for some dessert! They have lots of different flavors to choose from and three different sizes. I thought a small would be too small for one person but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I tried the POG and the Ube and both were really good. Great flavor. You can add ice cream to these for an additional $1. Worth the add if you ask me. The ice cream is super thiccc. The counter ladies were friendly. We were in Captain Cook area and decided to stop in. If you're driving by, you need to make that quick left turn into the parking lot or you're going to have to make a u turn on that busy highway. Service was good and they have a patio with table to eat out side. As for the Shave Ice, it's great to see more and more places serving it and Ninja didn't disappoint with natural flavors and the ice was perfectly fluffy. The ube was amazing! Usually I opt for fruit flavors but we saw ube and thought why not? It did not disappoint! The ice texture was fluffy. The flavor was very ube so not too sweet. The size was just right to share with 1 other adult. The shop itself is small. There's only enough space for a few patrons to order inside but there are plenty of tables that the other businesses share that you can use. The service was prompt and good. They were obviously busy but they did take the time to acknowledge, say hello, and let you know they'll be with you after they finish a few of the orders ahead of you. This is probably one of the best shave ice we've had in the state. For some reason, the ice wasn't melting as quickly as other places we've been to. So it allowed us to enjoy and savor rather than race to finish it before it becomes a pool of sugar. We will def return next time! read more

Hawaiian Ninja is amazing! Best shave ice in Kona and I think they're on par with some of the best in the state (and I grew up near Wailoa's on Oahu). What sets them apart is the home made syrup. It's not the overly sugary bulk stuff (Malolo) that EVERYONE uses. They actually fresh squeeze oranges for their POG, blend strawberries, etc. They're all very refreshing and won't make your teeth and gut hurt. But...they also make delicious mochi for the bowls with them. They even make a strawberry azuki mochi just like the famous Two Ladies in Hilo and I think theirs are just as good and it really works as a shave ice topper. Of the Shave Ice places we went while on vacation, this was the only one that limited you to two flavors. They have a bunch of special creations, which also include ice cream, that have more than 3 flavors, but if you just want shave ice, 1 or 2 flavors.
