This place is so not Hawaiian Time I tell you kanakas. It is the run of the mill if not a fallen off with shoyu and sugar flavored teriyaki. No lomi salmon to go with the L&L style production line kalua pig. Mac salad is salty and no more the right taste besides salt pepper and mayo. Not even mixed good. I felt very uncomfortable from the second opening the door. I ordered my food around 8:05pm and everyone was getting ready to clean up and start closing. Overall i think that it's very unprofessional as a business having workers who are more worried bout the clock, than helping out customers. Ambiance was absent like a father. I ate here for the first time with a friend tonight, based solely on the fact that we hadn't gone here yet. The area is wide open, with a layout that is very minimalistic. It was very clean, though, including the centralized condiment area, and there looked to be plenty of seats. We arrived around five, and three people were in line in front of us. The menu is fairly limited, from what I could tell. Two or three chicken or beef dishes, a pork dish, some sandwhiches (three, if I remember correctly), and some sides. Now, there's nothing wrong with this. It's better to do food right with limited selection, than mass quantities with poor quality. The only problem we ran into was that the people in front of us were leaning on the stack of menus, which are placed on the counter, and are not in an area that can be seen while standing in line. The guy was going over literally every menu option with the woman behind the counter, who, to her credit, was incredibly cordial and didn't seem like she was put out at all. Of course, other people kind of were, and there was some general toe-tapping. One of the guys from behind the line came out, probably to see if he could help someone else, but about that time, the slow customer got his act together and made his order. When we got to the front, it was pretty clear that this was a normal routine for her, at least for the time being. I guess she had to explain the concept of a "Hawaiian Plate Lunch," as well as the three sizes available and the options presented. Without pre-planning, my friend and I ordered the exact same thing. Mauna Loa Chicken with two scoops of rice, plus an extra scoop of rice instead of the macaroni salad. Nothing against their salad, I just don't care for any kind of macaroni salad, and apparently neither does my friend. The chicken is sort of a spicy-sweet sauce, whereas the rest of the menu seemed roughly based around teriyaki options. The drinks were self-serve, but the food was delivered to our table, in to-go containers. We both ordered the small size, and there was a decent amount of chicken for the cost, with plenty of rice. The sauce was good, but I could have used more of it. The flavour was nice, but not over-powering. I ended up tossing some Siracha hot sauce on the mix, just to get a little more heat. I wavered back and forth on my star rating for this one, but the fact is, the woman behind the counter was so cordial, friendly, and took care of all her customers, not just us, that she bumped the experience up from par to slightly above average. I would not be adverse to going back for a quick lunch, but I don't think I will make this my dinner meal again. read more

I've been a faithful customer of hawaiin time for years but the last couple of trips have been disappointing, particularly our visit two days ago. We ordered one medium and one large meal. They both only had one small scoop of mac and one small scoop and rice and a very small portion of meat. They were both the size of a small in the larger box. And not only that but the chicken was dry and hard like it had been sitting around for a while. Im not a very picky customer but we drive across town for them and we had to eat again shortly after. Very disappointed, I guess we need to find another hawaiian place. read more

Unrelated to anything except the service. I called today because so many places are closed and have adjusted hours, last time we tried to go they had closed several hours early. The girl on the phone answered my question, and *thought* she had hung up, but I heard her in the background rudely complaining to her coworker that I was the 50th person to call and ask that today. Completely understandable to get frustrated with the same phone call 50 times, but maybe double check that you hung up the phone before getting an attitude? It's absolute chaos out there right now, of course people are going to want to make sure a place is open before driving several miles.... maybe change the voicemail to the store to announce the new hours...? From my experience, this place is a hit and miss. I usually come here when doing my laundry next door and order the chicken and veggies plate. Sometimes I get lucky and have a nice amount of chicken chunks that are not overly saturated in black sauce. Sometimes ( which was today ) I get tiny pieces of chicken that are overly salty which seem to be the left overs of their last batch. I decided to do my part and wear my face mask and went in to order. The cashier was wearing a mask ( kudos ! ). I politely asked the cashier if I could get a bottled Pepsi and a cup of ice along with my meal. She proceeded to grab the cup by the lower half and made her way to the soda dispenser. I thought: oh good she's grabbing the cup from the lower part; but that quickly turned into disappointment as she finished dispensing the ice and grabbed the rim of the cup with her glove clad hand. I asked if I could have another without her touching the rim of the cup with her hand ( gloves ). She became frustrated and said " I literally just put these glove on - so it's fine ". I did not argue with her. I simply said " ok disregard the cup with ice , I'll just take the bottled soda". I also pointed at the chopsticks and asked for a pair. As I was pointing at them she quickly snapped at me and said " do not touch those, we will hand them to you " I told her " I am not touching them, I am pointing at them ". I am aware of the no contact from customers to their plasticware ( chapsticks I'm this case ). This is the last time I give this business my money. I will say that I do respect and give thanks to the essential workers ( as I am one of them myself ). And perhaps this incident would have not happened if employees were better trained in the handling and preparation. So my message is to the managers : please train your workers accordingly. We are dealing with a pandemic. And perhaps I am being overly cautious - but I rather be more cautious than not. read more

The food is super tasty, but they don't explain the sizing very well on the menu when ordering online. So the small comes in a tiny box with no mac I guess. The regular comes in a big box with side of rice and Mac. And the giant one comes with 2 scoops of rice and side of Mac. I wish they had a better explanation online for folks who haven't had before cause it's a bit confusing. The freaking Mac is ridiculously good and the pork is super flavorful. Ordered from here for an employee retirement party to have food delivered. Food never arrived, tried calling 20 times no answer, finally got through by calling from cell phone vs the company phone (perhaps because they have caller ID?) They had not even made our order, said they had just received the note the day before (not true - called several days in advance) and just didn't bother to call and tell us they couldn't do it or anything. Just left us with no food and 25 hungry employees! Will never use this restaurant or recommend them. read more

If you have a gift card for Hawaiian Time don't even bother using it. They will tell you there is zero on the card and sit there and listen to the recording of balance using the number on the back of the card. And even after listening to the transactions on the gift card and balance that is still remaining, the employees will tell you there is zero. Then proceed to try and keep the gift card. So with the holiday season coming up don't purchase Hawaiian time gift cards. It's a scam. read more

Delivery cancelled without notice. We called the day before to order, but they were out of beef so we asked if they would have some the next day and were told they would. So we put in an advance order for this evening, and I suddenly get emails and GrubHub notifications that my order was cancelled and refunded. They didn't even bother to A: set aside ingredients for a PAID order from 24 hours prior, or B: call to let us know or ask if we wanted a replacement. It sounds like maybe they ran out after the lunch rush and then decided to look at delivery orders? I was so excited to eat here and it had such great reviews, but after this experience, our family is completely turned off from this place. read more

Always wonderful customer service when I come here. The food is always great! My favorite is the Mauna Loa chicken and you have to get it Super-Hawaiian w/ a side of Mac and the rice. So bomb. Went in to get dinner with my fiancé and her daughter this evening. Ordered food for everyone and waited. The staff seemed to be looking in our direction more than normal and giggling. I didn't think anything about it until later. We got our food and right away noticed an ant in the rice of my fiancés daughter's plate. And hair in the macaroni. Same plate. Hawaiian time is barley edible if you've ever tasted real Hawaiian food. There's no much authenticity here at all and the Mac salad is sub par at best. The staff was super friendly, the dining area was nice and clean, napkins,straws, forks and chop sticks well stocked but I must say I was a little disappointed with the Kahlua pork. The Kahlua pork had the right amount of saltiness to it (no cabbage) but it seemed more on the dry side. The rice was good and the Mac Salad had a lot of mayonnaise that probably should have been incorporated better because there were a couple of bites that all I tasted was mayo. I requested a take-out order for one mixed plate: Mauna Loa chicken (chicken pieces in sweet-spicy sauce) and kalua pig with fresh grilled vegetables and mac salad ($8.95 + $2 for veggie substitute). Before I even tried any food, the employees messed up my order twice. They initially forgot the mac salad, so I had to drive back just to get that taken care of. Then I tried the chicken and immediately realized they had put in the Huli-Huli teriyaki chicken (not the Mauna Loa chicken) by mistake. Instead of going back a second time, I just settled for what I had in front of me. The food was OK. I did like the chicken...very flavorful there. The crunchy, vibrant grilled veggies were a welcome break from the monotonous chewing of teriyaki chicken. The kalua pig was respectable, but could have used a bit more salt. After all the hubbub to get my mac salad, it was just average at best. The mac salad could have used a bit more salt and pepper, and perhaps some shredded carrot for flavor, color, and texture contrast. When we first started to go to Hawaiian Time, we went to the Coburg Road store in Eugene. They have always been consistent there. Since it has opened in Salem, it is sketchy at best. Not only does the quality vary each time but the quantity of meat is different also. Love the food here and if they could get more consistent, we would probably eat here more often. read more

I was thrilled to find this place since I'm a huge fan of L&L and Ono in California. This is your typical hearty Hawaiian fare - you can likely portion out two meals from the large plate. The Mauna Loa chicken has a slight kick, and I prefer it over the Huli Huli. The Kalua pig is pretty much all meat, so ask for extra cabbage if inclined. If you need to detox from your recent Carl's Jr/Popeyes binge, head next door to Hawaiian Time and opt for fresh grilled veggies to go along with your meat of choice. Hawaiian Time gets bonus points for the seaweed/sesame seed packets. They are the perfect accompaniment to the rice and macaroni salad; I usually dump at least four of the containers on top. Yum! The girls working there are super friendly and even took time to recommend their favorite restaurants in Portland. Love the Salem hospitality! read more

As others have said, I do think it's far from authentic, but the owners have to be aware of local tastes, etc. I survived on Hawaiian Time in college so I love to have it every once in awhile. Feels like coming home and it's comfort food. The macaroni salad is my favorite item on the menu, but they have a great assortment of plate lunches. I usually end up getting the regular teriyaki chicken and it's a nice change from hamburgers and fries. I don't believe this location has a drive thru, but the one in West Salem does. Makes it more convenient. Try it and you might really like it! read more
