I came here last month with my family. I had previously planned a work dinner here for my colleagues and didn't hear anything bad. Plus, I could use my Chase Reserve benefit here, so why not? Let's start off with the positives. Our server was friendly, patient and helpful. Scallops appetizer was delicious. It made the rest of the meal seem promising. Now we go to the negatives. Boy and I ordered the bone in rib chop to split (extremely dry on the outside, borderline stringy, needed salt), and brussel sprouts (looked unappetizing and uninspired, like you literally boiled brussel sprouts and put a glaze sauce on top). It was the most disappointing restaurant meal I've had in years. I'm embarrassed that I picked this place for my coworkers to have a dinner. Lovely experience at Hawksmoor! We stopped by for the Sunday Roast and enjoyed every bit. The beautiful wood furnishings make for a classy vibe that was also cozy and welcoming. It was a great spot for a nice lowkey brunch with friends. The server was extremely attentive, friendly and professional. For drinks, we ordered the espresso martinis which were not too sweet and very smooth. We moved onto the roast special for the main event, which was very well done. The rump roast was perfectly cooked and extremely tender with an excellent flavor. There were a lot of veggies which made the meal filling but not too heavy, and the crispy potatoes had a super satisfying crunch. The Yorkshire pudding was super airy and buttery- perfect for soaking up the extra gravy. We ended with the sticky toffee pudding, a house classic. The cake was very moist and absolutely mouthwatering soaked in the warm toffee sauce. Our server was super kind and brought us complimentary chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. There was some kind of Guinness or other addition that made them very unique. Tonight, my stepson was in from the Navy and we wanted to take him out for a great steak dinner. We always try higher end steakhouses and restaurants in Chicago such as Tre Dita, Boka, Joe's, etc. we are less worried about the cost and more about the food and experience. Initially, we were greeted by a very polite man and woman at the front desk. They accommodated our booth seating even though we were about 30min early. Once we were sat, we were greeted by a gentleman that offered filtered water or sparkling water. He just went with filtered water. About 15min later, our server came over to greet us. He seemed very rushed. The menus were quickly handed to us He didn't introduce himself at all, he just said," can I get anyone drinks?" , he didn't even make eye contact while explaining the cuts of meat they had in stock. His questions were very short and not very warm. We almost felt like we were an inconvenience. He asked if we had any questions. I asked about steak portions. My wife was starting to tell him we would like to order oysters. He was in such a rush, he cut her off and said, "I'll just let you guys decide and be right back" and he rushed off. He returned after about 15 min and we ordered 6 oysters. When the oysters came out the food runner was going to drop the oysters and hurry off without explaining which oysters were which leaving us with a pot luck. I stopped him and he checked with the server, came back, and waved his finger around stumbling. Not the type of service you expect with what Hawksmoor charges. The server came back and says,"You ready to order or need more time". As we ordered you could just feel he wanted to move on from the table. I added a last minute Coke, and he just smirked and rushed off. No acknowledgment. The food came out, and the food we ordered were completely given to the wrong person. The food runner was clueless. What was weird was we noticed our server cleaning tables and setting them. I've never seen that before, especially since our server handles our food as well. My wife and step daughter ordered the Sttrip, medium.... And they asked if could be toward the medium well side. We ordered Chateaubriand medium rare. For sides we ordered mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, maple bacon, and steamed spinach. The steaks had decent flavor, but the strip came out medium rare... very rare. Half the Chateaubriand was medium rare but 2 pieces were almost well done. We ate the steak since we were hungry and didn't feel like sending it back and waiting another 45min for them to cook. The mashed potatoes I definitely would pass on, they are bland and almost like KFC mashed potatoes. The Brussels sprouts, I thought would be grilled or charred, and then tasted very bland like if they were just boiled and sent to the table, the spinach everyone liked. The maple bacon was awesome! Nice thick strips. Towards the end of our meal, most servers will ask how the dinner was, and would you be interested in dessert. Not our server. He came by and said, "let me take your plates and I'll be back for your dessert". No question or anything. Very high pressure and assertive. Almost felt like.. you will order dessert. Like I mentioned, I've eaten at many level of restaurants, including several Michelin Star establishments. I'm very understanding that things can go wrong , but always give a chance to redeem themselves. This experience was not good. The food was mediocre and not cooked right. Not acceptable when the bill was $500 for 4 people. You way to be in that price point, you better cook an perform like you deserve to be there. I can't recommend this restaurant. Hawksmoor serves a premium product with an unpretentious attitude, which I like. I have been to other locations in the UK, but had not been to the Chicago location since shortly after it opened so was excited to return. We opted for a late afternoon Sunday roast. The service was friendly and prompt, however there were a few small misses along the way. It was still early, so we ordered sodas which came out after the meal was served. It took several minutes for the server to come back with steak knives and the wine glasses were not removed after we ordered drinks. The Yorkshire pudding and roasted potatoes did not seem fresh (potatoes were dry and hard). The meal did not take long to finish, however our server did not come back once and when another server came to clear our plates she informed us she would take care of us while our original server finished their break. All in all, very small hiccups, however for the price point, hiccups that shouldn't be happening. Would I return to Hawksmoor? Yes. We tried the new addition - beef and liberty bar- upstairs. The ambiance was so cool, but there was no reason for it to be frigid compared to the rest of the restaurant! Everyone was wearing coats because it was extremely cold. We were also at first told we couldn't order from the full menu, when the website and social media had said we could. When I corrected them they did let us order from the full menu, but our service overall took so long and was hard to get ahold of. My ultimate spicy margarita was good but shouldn't have been $22 for a classic drink. The espresso martinis are good here. We ordered a couple of small plates: Scallops - our favorite, very garlicky and breaded though. It comes in 3 pieces for $28 and we sadly found out when we got our bill that adding a fourth was $10 extra.. Steak tartare - tasty and good quality Boston lettuce salad - literally half the size as the last time I ordered this which was so disappointing. I specifically ordered it because I enjoyed the portion for the price last time, so I would have paid extra for a ceasar if I had known. Tried the Sunday Roast this past Sunday and it was very good. Let's start with the appetizers... The fried shrimp was fabulous. Tried all three types of oysters again delicious. And the Yorkshire pudding sloppy Joe's. I did not have high hopes for these and again really good. The appetizers are definitely a five out of five. Server was great, friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere casual and comfortable. Now onto the main course, pardon the pun, the Sunday roast. The trimmings were all fabulous. Roasted carrots, roasted garlic, the gravy all just really, very good. The roast itself was the weak-link. It tasted good, but it came out lukewarm and frankly not as tender as I expected. My last stop for this year's Restaurant Week! We opted for the Hack Menu, which is all à la carte. I was especially excited to try the burger that's been all over IG, but honestly, it was a bit underwhelming. It was huge, messy, and just okay flavor-wise--not the standout I was hoping for. On the other hand, the steak my table ordered? That had great flavor, and I'd definitely come back to try it for myself. What really stood out, though, was the service and ambiance. The leather, dark wood, and dim lighting gave the space a vibe somewhere between an old-school train dining car and a speakeasy--warm, intimate, and inviting. We went out to brunch on Mother's Day. Crazy, right? Holiday meals out are so often frustrating and disappointing due to crowds and expectations. But not always. We went to Hawksmoor for their traditional English Sunday roast and it was near perfect. Welcoming hostesses provided a lovely small bouquet for Mom and a prompt seating in the beautiful restaurant. We started with a round of cocktails and a delicious starter of cold smoked salmon, Guinness bread, and an herbed cream cheese. The salmon was delicately prepared with a whisper of smoke and paired beautifully with the earthy, slightly sweet thin slices of Guinness bread. I had a "Sub Zero Martini" that was served like a tall. elegant shot. So good. I had to force myself to not bang it down and demand another. Instead I sipped it like Sean Connery and nibbled on the iced ramekin garnish of spicy, thinly sliced chili and carrot. A thrilling cocktail. The Sunday Roast arrived as one large gorgeous platter of decadence for sharing. Perfectly cooked sliced rib roast served with a rich, savory sausage and beef marrow stuffing. Think of the best stuffing you've ever had on Thanksgiving winning the lottery. In a word: rich. Speaking of which, the meal is served with a small cast iron dish with thick sweet smokey bacon and small pitchers of different sauces/gravies. But I think what made this all come together into something fantastic are the humble role players of roasted cabbage, parsnips, and carrots. Usually these vegetables in a roast meal turn into a forgettable mush, at least when I'm cooking, but each veg was cooked perfectly and still retained its characteristic special flavor and texture. Hawksmoor really put out a fantastic meal for us with great style and warmth...and with a packed house Mother's Day lunch crowd. I was floored and can't wait to go back. It's a vibe. I went to Hawksmoor Chicago because of the insane hype and glowing reviews. Supposedly one of the best steakhouses in London. What I got was, without exaggeration, the worst meal I've ever had in Chicago. The oysters were full of pieces of shell - not just one, but multiple - which tells me no one in that kitchen knows how to shuck an oyster properly. The ribeye was a complete disaster. Ordered medium-rare, it arrived bizarrely split in personality - one half still practically mooing, the other cooked to death. The entire steak was riddled with thick, unchewable gristle, making it impossible to cut. On the rare occasions I managed to get a piece into my mouth, it was so tough and unpleasant that I had to spit it out. The sides didn't save it. The creamed spinach tasted like straight-up lawn clippings. The lobster was fishy like "this should not have been served". I honestly don't know how you manage to screw up a Yorkshire pudding - but somehow they did. All hype, zero execution. Save your money and eat literally anywhere else. read more

Have been looking forward to visiting Hawksmoor since I tried the NYC outpost a few years ago. The spacious dining room was a nice start as it felt open but not sparse. We started our meal with the Potted Beef and Bacon. This was a very unique dish and was very tasty. The Yorkshire pudding was light and fluffy but could have used more to enjoy the marrow and bacon. Where the meal fell down a little was their steak. I was hoping for more flavor from the charcoal cooking and it just tasted a little bland. My partner and I brought friends back to this spot and they all had a great experience and enjoyed the food. We dined on a Saturday evening so it was busy. The only downside to the dinner was that food took a hot minute to come out. Last time when we came on a Tuesday evening, they mentioned that steaks take awhile to come out due to rest time. The time between receiving our apps and our steaks was about 45-50 minutes, which felt a little too long. For appetizers, we did the bone marrow oysters again which is our favorite item here. We also tried the steak tartare which wasn't too bad - it's served with a side of thin bread crisps. The caesar salad was also fresh and delicious and the beet salad is one of my favorite. I loved the sweetness of the beets paired with the horseradish sauce. As for the steak, I got the strip this time. I am not a big fan of aged-dry steaks because they get a little too robust for me, but this one was just right! I do prefer their filet here over the strip though. Love a good Sunday roast! My husband and I visited for a Sunday roast. As a British person I take my roasts SERIOUSLY... Here is my review just on the roast alone; Meat- 1000/10.. Oliver Twist vibes : please sir can I have some more Yorkshire: 7/10- just a little crispy for my liking but good Roast potatoes: 6.2 /10 would've liked them a bit crispier Carrots and veggies: 9.7/10 nice flavors and good texture Gravy: 10/10- I could swim in it. I highly recommend Hawksmorr. I went here a few months back for restaurant week before a play on a Friday evening, and we were pleased with the experience. We had an early reservation (5:30) and were surprised to find the bar of walk-ins already nearly full upon arrival. Not many tables were taken when we sat down, but every table was filled by the time we left. The ambiance is very much reminiscent of an English style steakhouse, from the wall decor to the bathroom. They nailed the theme's execution allow it to stand out as different in Chicago amongst the many steakhouse options. We had great service from our server as he gave us the story behind the restaurant and how the chain had recently come to the United States, starting with Chicago and another location I can't remember. He was helpful in aiding in our drink/food choices, all of which were great. The appetizer of the potted beef was a restaurant week special and was the star of the show - I had never had anything like it. Super flavorful and decadent. Also there might still be a diff menu for the bar and the rest of the restaurant - also best to ask. We came in on a Friday without a reservation and they were able to seat us at the bar. We tried the bone marrow oysters, regular oyster and the $25 Steak Frites. The regular oysters were fine, a bit large for my taste but clean. The bone marrow ones were good but I'm glad we only got 6 cuz it's a bit rich. Next time I definitely want to try the Vietnamese oysters (not in HH menu). Then we both got the $25 steak frites. The steaks were cooked perfectly but I forget this is a UK restaurant so the flavors are not like a typical Chicago steak (buttery, salty and crisp on the outside). It was def good but I did miss the traditional flavors of the steaks we are used to getting but overall it's a great place to check out. Note: It's dark inside. This steak house was recommended by a Chicago native so I set up a reservation. We started with a whiskey special (with ginger and lemongrass) and their take on a Shirley temple (with hints of ginger and lemon). On a Sunday night, the steak options were limited by some sell outs but I don't feel I missed out on anything. The server Julian was very attentive and informative. We opted for a 14 oz rib eye with garlic shrimp, creamed spinach, and sourdough and it was perfect for my party of two. The steak was well cooked, the spinach was herbaceous and flavorful, and the shrimp were massive. I especially loved dipping the sourdough in the buttery shrimp sauce. Although we didn't have room for dessert, we received complimentary cookies to cap off the meal. I would highly recommend this spot for a date night or group dinner as the vibe was intimate and elevated, without being too formal. And there are plenty of other options to try on the menu. This was my first visit to Hawksmoor--and it will definitely not be my last. I came in for the happy hour menu as a test run; it's an upscale steakhouse, and before diving deep into the full menu, I wanted to see if it was worth the splurge. Spoiler: it absolutely is. Let's start with the cocktails. I had three (don't judge), and each one was more delicious than the last. First up: the Pete Dandy. At first sip, we thought it was just a really good ginger beer... until it hit me and I had to ask, "Is there alcohol in this?" Yes, ma'am, and it was gloriously smooth. Bright, refreshing, gingery with a subtle peppery kick--did I mention it was delicious? Next was the margarita--good, but I asked for light ice and it came with a bit too much, so it got a little watered down. That's the only thing keeping this from being a straight 5-star happy hour. Then came the Amaretto cocktail. Sweet. Smooth. Balanced. Absolutely perfect. I'm not a cocktail person normally, but I couldn't resist trying the next and the next. Now for the food. I tried both the raw oysters and the bone marrow oyster. I'm not an oyster girl, but I gave them a shot. The raw one was just too large and briny for me--oyster lovers might swoon, but it wasn't for me. The bone marrow oyster, though? Succulent, buttery (thanks to that marrow), warm, and steamed to perfection. Still wouldn't order it again personally, but for those who love oysters, this is your moment. Then... came the steak. I wasn't planning on it, but the vibe, the drinks, and the good company convinced me. I went with a medium-rare dry-aged ribeye, and it was perfection. Just enough funk to let you know it's been aged, but not overwhelming. Tender, flavorful, and only a couple tiny gristly bits--exactly what you'd expect and want from a ribeye.
