Consider the rating in context. Steakhouses are not really my thing but this was the birthday boy's choice so off we went. The room is nice, if slightly crowded. The evening improved dramatically once the table of overly loud, highly obnoxious, massively entitled bros next to us left and were replaced by a table of normal people. Even then, volume was on the high side but tolerable. By the end of the evening the smoke from the wood fires was starting to get a little irritating but I was the only one in our party who had a problem. Our server Nico was wonderful, as were all the staff. Attentive, unobtrusive, and solicitous of our needs. We were warned that servings are large and apps and sides are meant for the table. We ordered the bone marrow with luges, sweetbreads, a side of zucchini, 2 picanha steaks, and a steak frites. I felt that it was too much food for three people but YMMV. Two of the three diners felt that there were minor doneness issues with their steaks but not to the point of needing to send them back. All the steaks were tender and tasty but the hanger steak was both over salted and over sauced. We all agreed that the meat was good enough that it did not need to be overwhelmed by sauces. The crispy shoestring fries accompanying the hanger steak were outstanding and the portion was so large that I was able to comfortably share it with the rest of the table. The restaurant clearly does not employ a pastry chef and the dessert menu shows it. We declined to order dessert because frankly, the dessert menu was boring as all get out. Because we were celebrating a birthday, though, the restaurant brought out a small vanilla sundae with a big sparkler. The gesture was very much appreciated but confirmed our decision not to order dessert. The components of the sundae were epically pedestrian. The best part IMO was the sparkler. Still, the meal was enjoyable. FWIW, the bill for three people - one of whom does not drink and also ordered the least expensive steak on the menu - was well over $400. read more

So we went here tonight for the first time, and although $600.00 was a bit more than I expected to pay for a dinner for three when one of us does not consume alcohol, I assure you that I will dine here again and this experience was well worth the price. I began with the Coal Roasted Oysters appetizer with Beef Tallow, Chimichurri, Parmesan & Fried Shallots. Not your run of the mill Oysters Rockefeller for sure. I've never had this preparation and thoroughly enjoyed it! My son and I both ordered the 16 oz. Wagyu NY Strip Mishima Reserve, Washington ($105 à la carte and worth every penny!!!!) Neither of us had a scrap of meat left on our plates! This was remarkably tender--a perfectly prepared medium rare--and virtually melted in your mouth. My wife found her Lamb Chops that were served with a "Herb-Tangy Yogurt Sauce" and Picolino Cucumber Salad (3 large chops--a meal) to be more than she could eat, but no less delicious--her words not mine. We shared two sides: Roasted Broccoli with Basil Pesto, Pistachios & Parmesan, and the Japanese Sweet Potatoes prepared with a vinegar caramel sauce that made the dish work and a Green Chimichurri, that while delicious was a distraction on this dish. Everything was great. The bone marrow was flavorful and surprisingly light. Smeared on the crusty bread, it paired well with the salad. The prawns were firm and had a great smokiness. The hanger steak was actually everyone's favorite. Very juicy and tender. The beef tallow fries were extra crispy and again, surprisingly light. I didn't have even a hint of greasiness. The mezcal ribeye was also fantastic. I could taste the mezcal slightly but that's a good thing. It was a little bit different than the usual. Their Wagyu Picanha had a very special smokiness to it while the Japanese Sweet Potato had a warm bed full of vinegar caramel, making it a sweet and enjoyable side alongside with our steaks. The Beef Fat Fries that came along with the Steak Frites were absolutely delicious with its crunchiness and not needing to be dipped in ketchup to be enjoyable. Our server, Geneva, was amazing. We loved how she acknowledge the birthday we were celebrating, gave some recommendations, and even went as far as personally walking me to the restroom when I asked where it was! Service was just extraordinary. The staff paid extra attention when your cup needs to be refilled, when you're done with appetizers to bring out the entrees, and even just helping clean up as fast as they could. After ordering our food, the appetizers came out in less than 10 minutes, which was very impressive as we had expected to wait about 15-20 minutes after ordering. The restaurant inside was beautiful with low lighting and intimate settings. They even had outdoor seating, but I am glad to have seen the interior, sit inside the restaurant, and enjoy the ambiance. El Che also served us a scoop of ice cream with a sparkler candle for celebrating a birthday. Without a comparison, this is the best steakhouse we have ever been to and we have visited many steakhouses in various locations. What made our dinner so outstanding was the food and service. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection over an open fire which is impressive as it is difficult to do. The chimichurri's acidity and herbacious flavor left nothing lacking. I will be dreaming of this steak for years. Our server's name was Guillermo and he was extremely kind and informative. The other servers cleared our plates and filled our waters quickly. Made a reservation for our anniversary for El Che. The girls at the desk were so easy to talk to and they quickly seated us. Definitely a date vibe inside with some outdoor seating too. Our server Liam was the man. He helped guide us through the menu with me ultimately deciding to start with the prawns on polenta then having the picanha with the sweet potato side. The prawns were grilled to perfection. The polenta was nice and light. The sauce was subtle. Not spicy at all.The picanha came out a perfect medium rare. Every bite was fantastic. The sweet potato was sweet but not overpowering. For dessert, we had Liam pick one of the two we had chosen and he came back with the banana split sundae. Holy crap we devoured that thing. The food was decent, a bit mismatched portions in my opinion: large shareable sides but fairly tiny main plates (the plates themselves were huge, but the portions - tiny), service was attentive and courteous - the only snag was the seemingly random "administrative fee" of 3.25% added to the check, this fee was then taxed and it was suggested that we add a tip on top of the fee. Why would we tip the fee? Why was the fee taxed? It's not a food item. The fee should be added after the tax, or better yet, apply it to large parties only (6+ people). Chose El Che for my husband's birthday dinner last week. We were super excited for this experience, and trekked to the west loop. A couple feet away from the entrance, a host opened the door for us and welcomed us. It was so cozy in the entrance and the indoor and outdoor hosts were both so friendly and warm. They kept our excitement going and took our coats. The interior is so welcoming, dark and beautiful. We were sat in the main dining room, and our experience fell totally flat when we were "greeted" by our server, Marco. I only know his name from the check, because he did not bother to introduce himself. He walked up, pen and paper in hand and just said "do you know what you want to drink"?. He didn't really look at us. It was honestly pretty jarring...everyone else was so warm up to this point and when you're looking at a $300 dinner, you expect a sort of experience. Instead I felt like our server was a temp borrowed from TGI Friday's. He suggested nothing for food, just asked us what we wanted. When asked what foods he liked by other tables, I heard him say "they're all good". He was rushed and disinterested, and he really ruined our experience. I wish we had a better server. Fortunately, the bussers and server assistants were lovely. They changed out our plates, made sure we had what we needed, and were very nice. For starters, we shared the tartare, fugazetta, and wedge salad. The fugazetta was not what I expected- I thought it would be some sort of cheese dip but instead it was like a cheesy breadstick. It was ok, I don't think it was worth $15. The wedge salad was excellent- I really enjoyed this. It was fresh and delicious, and the dressing was delightful. My husband loved the tartare. For the main, we shared the Waygu strip steak with the papas bravas as a side. The steak was served sliced on a platter with chimichurri. It was really good, I enjoyed it immensely. It was cooked to the perfect requested medium rare. The papas bravas potatoes were also delicious. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the sauce and bacon was tasty. Also a bit overpriced at $18. When it was time for dessert, the server asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu. When we said yes, he said "I'll just tell you what they are" and proceeded to spew off 2-3 desserts super fast before we could really understand what he was saying. We went with the flan and then he also brought out a vanilla ice cream sundae with a sparkler for my husband's birthday. That was nice, but it felt perfunctory and this server was just so disinterested in general that we were kinda annoyed by the whole spectacle. Overall the food was good, but a bit overpriced in my opinion. Feel this place is more for a special occasion celebration. The prices are a bit steep for the average person walking in. In total 1 appetizer, 2 main entrees and one side is 300$ for 2 people. Grilled oysters for starters was flavorful yet the $24 for only 4 oysters is pretty high. I ordered the 16 oz Prime NY strip for 76$ which did not include any sides; those are an extra cost. At first the steak arrived extremely undercooked so I had to send it back. Medium rare is more like rare and medium cooked is medium rare in this restaurant. Surf and turf includes the filet and lobster. The butter sauce paired nicely and added a ton of flavor. Per our waitress recommendation we ordered the beef fat fries to dip in the lobster sauce which was a solid combo. Overall our server was pretty attentive along with the rest of the staff. You have the option for a high or low top table and regardless the spacing of tables are pretty narrow and close. Expect to be sitting rather in close proximity to another group of guests. read more

I chase good food and great steak when in Chicago, so I was easily drawn in. What ruined my dinner was the more than an hour wait from the time the appetizer plates were picked up to the time our dinner plates and sides hit the table. We sat at an empty table for more than 60 minutes and my tastebuds just could not recuperate from that. The appetizers were definitely good and my daughter loved her steak, which is where the 3 stars come in, but i am bummed about that unbelievable wait which was minutes away from me calling it a night and just grabbing some late-night tacos somewhere. read more

I enjoyed my time at El Che. I saw so many influencers chatting about this spot so had to see what was the hype. Now my first time was great but there was a hiccup. Drinks were tasty, salad was a 10/10, fries delectable, but the steak was just not it. It was so fatty and hard to swallow but the flavor was good. The 2nd time I came we tried the happy hour special and got lobster frites because that's what everyone raved about. Expectations were high, but honestly I had better lobster at Red Lobster. We felt like it wasn't cooked all the way or even have a chat with Smokey flavor. Everything else was great but it missed the mark. And the overall price for what we got just wasn't justifiable. Service was great and attentive both times and the overall vibe of the place is warm and inviting. Would i come back? Sure, if I wasn't paying the bill. But on my own? Food, drinks and service were great. We got the bone in ribeye and wagyu strip. Both delicious, tender and flavorful. Aside from the steak, my favorite item was the Japanese sweet potato side. The oyster appetizer was only alright. The sauce was too overpowering for my taste.
