Tortoise is an ideal place to shell-abrate a special occasion. I brought my Missus here for her birthday. Valet parking was a snap; the $16 fee was competitive with SpotHero pricing (that can change). With its dark paneling and tasteful appointments, the main dining room is clubby, chic and very romantic. The bar and private dining rooms are equally inviting. We visited on a weeknight during a 'polar vortex' when there was no live music and only 4 other tables in the main room were occupied. Unfortunately, just one loud and obnoxious party made the room's noise level uncomfortable. The menu practically screams old school supper club: Old Fashioned. Relish tray. Prime rib. Beef Wellington. Dover sole. Michigan cherry pie. The lobster bisque, loaded with big hunks of lobster meat, is not to be missed. Our entrées were glazed salmon and seared scallops, and we substituted buttery mashed potatoes for the accompanying sides shown on the menu. Absolutely superb, and the portions were generous. Our desserts were key lime pie cheesecake and peanut butter pie. Each wedge was decadently rich and big enough to share, so we washed down half with Julius Meinl coffee and took the remainder home. Snagged a last-minute reservation at 8 PM on a Saturday! I've heard really good things about this place from friends and it did not disappoint. First of all, they have live music in the bar area on Saturdays and there is nothing like listening to jazz while sipping a martini??? Truly excellent service the owner went up to us several times and was very kind and fun to talk to. We tried the lamb appetizer, thread, Caesar salad, salad, burger, and the mac & cheese. Finally, a really good burger that Is only $20 and comes with fries??? My martini was very strong and very good. I really loved the mac & cheese as well and honestly, I would just come back to try any of their food again. They also have free match books huge win!!! The atmosphere definitely feels like a speakeasy or a jazz club. First off let me say that I feel blessed that even get to go out to places like this stand out supper club. So many cannot or just have no means of going to a place like Tortoise Supper Club. I didn't grow up getting to go to places such as this. I mean, most times we had enough but sometimes not. So I don't take for granted the allowance I have been granted to be at Tortoise. Service: impeccable! Servers are talented and know their stuff and truly deserve what they earn. Ambiance: superb! Decor and details of this spot are awesome. A classic supper club with old school chic. Sleek and cool. Cuisine: worth every cent. I enjoyed the scallops and a Caesar salad with a side of creamed spinach. Every bite was truly excellent. Now my dinner partners enjoyed steaks and Dover Dole and other entrees and they all looked delicious. Presentation was beyond excellent. What a terrific place! I loved the impeccable service, the food, the drinks, the jazz trio, even the parking attendants! Sometimes restaurants are not attentive to women dining, not this one. I made a reservation here for 13 people and they required a deposit of $10/person. They said if you have less people show up, they will keep the $10/person that you're missing. I thought that was a bit odd. The deposit was not put toward the final bill, instead it was returned to me (although, I had to call to ask them to refund it because it was not automatic). I absolutely love the tortoise club. It's my go-to spot whenever I want to feel relaxed and comfortable with a homey meal and a drink. I highly recommend the Hydro Boston Bibb Salad, which is quite large, the lobster bisque, which is very creamy and filling on its own, and my absolute favorite menu item, the Braised Shirt Ribs. The short ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy with carrots are the perfect taste and textures. What a yummy and filling meal. We were able to make same day reservations on a Wednesday evening and were greeted with a hearty meal. Most of their steaks are 10oz which I believe is a pretty generous portion. To start we ordered the tortoise bread which is a cheesy crispy bread! Worth getting! We then decided to order all the side and were so glad our server recommended the cream spinach bc it was a winner. The texture isn't complete mush, there are chunks of spinach still noticeable which makes for a better bite. I ordered the beef Wellington which came wrapped in prosciutto, mushroom, and puff pastry. Initially the roast was juicy and delicious but as I got fuller the roast started to dry out, but nothing a little mayo couldn't fix. The portion was pretty generous and I could have left full eating half. To finish our table shared a peanut butter pie. It was light, creamy and had a salty bite from the pretzel crust. This update review has been a long time coming. I don't usually do updates to my original reviews as I have enough trouble keeping up with the current ones. However, I feel like this one is due for an upgrade. The Tortoise Supper Club (TSC) has become a repeat experience for us for holiday meals, with our first experience being during COVID 2020 for Mother's Day. They offered the most amazing take out meal at a price that I thought was pretty reasonable. I had to drive down to pick it up and they were so wonderful in bringing everything out to the car and making sure it was situated correctly so as not to spill over. We got a prime rib meal, which was supposed to be for two people, so I ordered two meals to cover me, The Doctor and The Queen. Well that turned out to be a mistake of sorts as one meal was plenty of food. But the leftovers did not go untouched. Since that first adventure, we have found ourselves spending Valentine's Day, Xmas Even and Thanksgiving, with T-Day being a regular event for us for the last several years. They have a very consistent menu that is quite delish and their Holiday buffet is out of this world. The big selling point for me is the AYCE cold seafood section with oysters and shrimp. I LOVE oysters and they have both east and west coast oysters, with east being my favorite. In addition to the oysters and shrimp (big size ones I might add), there is tuna poke, smoked salmon and a lovely lobster bisque soup. As for the buffet, everything is fresh and there is plenty of different foods for all to enjoy: prime rib, turkey breast, salmon, all of the sides, salads, breads, and appetizers. The one thing I notice is that they never let the serving dishes go down to the bottom of the pan, there are spotters who alert the kitchen immediately and a fresh pan of food appears. And I just want to note that their Beef Wellington Service is always spot on and the folks are always so pleasant and helpful. I remember there was one visit where I was craving a turkey leg and our server was able to go back into the kitchen and get me one....now that is service! And their Michigan Cherry Pie is delightful, but I feel like it was delish because I asked it for it to be warmed up (I don't like cold or room temp desserts). I think we we will start to expand our holiday adventures with TSC, thinking about New Year's Eve in 2026, the Tortoise Supper Club Pheasant Pie in October, and most definitely Mother's Day and T-Day. read more

The vibe is elegant yet casual, believe it or not. From the moment you enter, everything is on point. We were warmly greeted at the entrance, as we awaited fellow guests. Our waiter was a seasoned and consummate professional. Seriously. Attentive. Knowledgeable. Warm. We admit, we were a tad concerned at the candlelight, for its lack of a wide base. Our host said he was clumsy, so we opted to douse it just in case. We enjoyed their warm and tasty bread, a calamari appetizer, and ordered our feasts. No one was able to finish their generously served meal, so yes, we all took leftovers home! (I partially blame that on the truly delicious bread; I'm sure I ate one too many before dinner!) This area nearby houses the corn cob condos and Legal Seafood w water views, they have live music on Friday and Saturday. Parking is only on the street and valet $16 up to 3 hours. We tried the expresso which was good. The cherry pie w ice cream was not good but the ice cream was good...and helped the taste. The crust was good and very thick for those who like thick crusts. Having recently developed a liking for the traditional Supper Club, we were very much looking forward to celebrating our 27th anniversary at the lovely Tortoise Club. They greeted us with a Happy Anniversary tent card and set us up at a great table. The steak tartare and cheese stuffed bread were awesome. My old fashioned was spot on. Wife was pleased with her mocktail. The wedge salad was bacon-y and great. But sadly, we cannot recommend: 1) the prime rib; a supper club staple, which in this case I had trouble cutting through with a steak knife. They replaced the gristly piece with another which was only slightly less chewy; we do know that prime rib should be soft enough to cut with a butter knife; 2) the Chilean sea bass, which was composed with a coconut sauce that was sweet like candy and really took us aback. Our server Luke was heroic through all this. My wife's second choice, the short ribs, gave us nothing to complain about. No problems with the mashed potatoes or the creamed spinach, very nice. The recommended Chappellet red blend wine was very acceptable. We ordered the tart cherry pie, and it was delicious, but the ball of ice cream that adorned it was frozen hard as a rock so we had to wait a while for that to thaw enough to eat. We would probably return to Tortoise some day but would certainly avoid those two disappointing mains. (It took me a while to write this review since I didn't want to be too harsh.) read more

Adding a second review because my first was for a now-retired menu, prior to them pivoting to fully embrace the Supper Club Vibe. And the pivot is definitely a success. The clubby vibe and the cozy bar remain, but the menu is tightly focused, to its credit. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail are colossal and meaty, a paragon of the form. Lobster bisque is loaded with chunks of lobster, and the salads are crisp and fresh. For mains, every year I visit in October for the Pheasant Pie and am never disappointed. From their website - "Wisconsin pheasant, fresh root vegetables, Cognac peppercorn sauce, and crispy skin garnish." Get on their mailing list so you too can experience this exquisite delight. For standard fare, the dover sole is huge and delicious, enough for two. The filet is always excellent rare, and, if you desire a touch of comfort, the meat loaf provides. Cherry pie is excellent (Agent Cooper would approve!) and the Grasshopper should be tried at least once - full of minty goodness. Superb cocktails. The wine list is short but focused, and they are holding the line with a Guigal CdP under $100. Not all heros wear capes! read more

We came here for an early pre-show dinner on our wedding anniversary and we are so glad we did! The hostess asked us to wait for the manager to walk us over to our seat - they didn't mention an anniversary, so it wasn't for any special reason, maybe just the manager enjoying doing so! The seating is comfortable and the entire restaurant is pure low-lit, old school supper club, upscale without being pretentious. It feels like a typical Chicago steakhouse with a bit more character and wall illustrations reminiscent of The Palm. Our waiter Jorge was super friendly and knowledgeable. When we mentioned our anniversary, he brought us coupes of sparkline rosé, and it was delicious! We went a little nuts for an anniversary dinner, so my husband started with the relish tray. I had the mushrooms he wasn't eating, and they were great (pickled, flavorful). I got lobster bisque and it was likely the best I've ever had, not that I order it all the time. They don't skimp on lobster, which is great to see. Speaking of going nuts, I ordered the famous grasshopper drink, which was like a frozen extra-minty shake, and it was magical. My husband loved his skirt steak with rosemary fries subbed in. I tried some and was a fan. I got something I've had rarely, excited since it was on the menu and is uncommon to see: beef Wellington. I didn't love it! They serve it split in two, but I think it sits a while like that and gets a bit dry, perhaps becoming overcooked (a bit) in the process. I know the beef "steams" a bit given how it's cooked and surrounded by multiple elements, but there was no initial sear, so it all looked a bit gray. The different elements tasted good, but the beef was a bit gamey and not what I'd expect, probably in part due to overcooking. Despite the main dish being disappointing, everything else was so outstanding (the other food, the atmosphere, the service) that I'd still give it 5 stars and return. We visited the Tortoise club on Christmas Eve. The venue was lovely and festive and felt perfect for the occasion. We were an early seating, 4:15pm, and unfortunately there was no music (which was something I had been hoping for). We started with cocktails, a grapefruit basil martini (very underwhelming and tasted watered down somehow) and a blood orange harpoon (which was delicious, highly recommend). We ordered some oysters to start but when they were delivered they were pretty dry, i think they had been pre-shucked earlier in the day. It may just be because they were planning on being so busy for Christmas Eve but it was disappointing nonetheless. When you are charging $25 for 6 oysters you really should be shucking them freshly in my opinion. Despite the disappointing start our main courses were delicious. My other half ordered the Prime Rib special and I had the beef Wellington. You could easily split the Wellington between two people, it was so rich but really good. We ordered the broccolini as our side and I would recommend going with something else as this was really undercooked and not very nice. Finally we ended the night with the cherry pie which was the perfect way to end the meal. Total bill came to $400, including a bottle of wine, for 2 people (we shared starters and dessert). My Husband and I came here for happy hour and we also had a reservation for dinner before going to the Goodman Theatre. Let me start by saying that we were able to park for free with the valet. As the restaurant stamped our ticket with proof of theater tickets. Happy hour was great. $1 oysters and shrimp. How can you beat that. Happy hours on Wednesdays and Fridays starting at four, but I suggest you get there early as it does fill up. We have not been there on a Friday night, but apparently they have jazz on Fridays. When we moved into the dining room, we were seated at a very nice size table, and our server was wonderful. She was very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Definitely an old school supper club, the owner was there as the host and you could really tell his pride of ownership. There was a nice mix of people, families, groups of business people, and I was just out for a nice evening and a great dinner. Came here for Thanksgiving with my partner and we made reservations in advance for 6:00pm. Upon arrival, it was understandably very busy as it was the holidays and people were waiting for their tables. Once I checked in and checked in our coats, our table was ready. The restaurant was bigger than I expected it to be and the ambiance was nice. When we sat down, our server explained how the layout worked since it was buffet style. My partner has a severe nut allergy, and when we expressed our concerns, she brought us to the manager of the restaurant, who explained which foods were safe to eat and which are not. Each dish had a sign and it notated if it was nut free, gluten free, dairy free, vegan, or vegetarian. There were many options from salads, to meats, to seafood, to dessert. Everything was so well organized. I really enjoyed their mashed potatoes, turkey and their seafood bar. The options were endless!! I know I made reservations before I came to town and was very happy that I did! One afternoon I stayed in the outside area, sipping drinks from happy hour and watching the city go by. Absolutely excellent non-stop service. The waitress came by the exact number of times I needed: not too bothersome, never waiting for service. The food was absolutely amazing. I didn't think I was going to eat all that steak, but it was so good it was completely worth it. That was excellent. Went for happy hour at 5pm on a Friday. Wasn't too crowded, was able to get seated right away. Staff are all very friendly and dressed up very nice, the tables are dimly lit with candles, the vibe is a little upbeat with lots of voices and music in the background. The happy hour deal for this place is great. $1 oysters and cocktail shrimp and the cocktails are 50%. We came without a reservation and we got the last table so we will definitely get a reservation next time. The blood harpoon martini was really good and strong. This was unbelievable! I'd seen their lobster bisque in TikToks with huge chunks of lobster and thought it looked delicious but had to be a staged TikTok. Nope! There was a ton of lobster in my soup, including a full claw and it was fantastic! The short ribs were also good, but they were quickly overshadowed by the peanut butter pie which was huge and so, so good. We came for restaurant week and this is one of few restaurants I'd come back and pay full price for. A dinner of the bread, soup and dessert would be unbeatable. read more

We love the supper club atmosphere at Tortoise Club. Our waiters have been professional and friendly. The food is always good and the live music Fridays and Saturdays make this a special place for a night out. We like coming here for festive occasions. Last night we were invited to the most amazing event at the Tortoise club. It was and industry event so I always expect the servers to be on high alert. Mind you I had never been to the restaurant so no one knew who we were. I can say that from the moment we walked through the door the entire team from the lowest person on the totem pole to the very top (owner) demonstrated quite possibly some of the best hospitality I personally have ever experienced at a high end luxury restaurant. This place is different than the other places I"ve been in the city. Everyone has a vibe of course but there is something uniquely special about this place... we were all sat in this room that is red lacquered and reminded me of one of the rail cars on the orient express... Like what? IT was SOOO COOL! Then the food... OMFFFFF GOD!!! WOW. we had mini lobster roll appetizers that my mouth is still watering over... then the lamb lollypop I'm going to be dreaming about... We sat down for dinner and they have this fucking bread that I can only imagine is the closest thing I'll ever experience to crack cocain.... it's like filled with two kinds of cheese and garlic and it comes out warm..... I just had my ozempic shot and this bread is a GLP-1's kryptonite LOL Oh, let me also say that my wine glass was never more less than 3/4 full all night because the wait staff is on you more than any wait staff I have ever seen... This shows me that the management treats their staff amazing... you can just tell when you go to a place where all the employees treat the business like you are in their home... says a lot about how the business model and culture of management is set up... Bravo So Dinner comes out and we have this sea bass that tastes like butter candy heaven.. and then the sides come out and I'm already completely stuffed and can't eat any more so they do what??? bring these mini desserts out that are like the most delicious desserts we have ever had.. Flourless chocolate cake with peanut butter mousse on the top and this banana foster creme brûlée that made me want to slap the shit out of someone!!! OMG!!! BEST IN SHOW and the key lime tart that takes you back to grandma's house! Everything there is made entirely from scratch right down to the juice that the bartenders use.... As an event planner I can tell in 5 seconds when the main ingredient in anything is love... it's a perfume that permeates the air around any event. This was the case last night... I normally don't post reviews unless the experience was like awful but this experience was so epic I had to review it. Shout out to Kelly for inviting my team last night to be a part of this event. If you made it this far into the review. Tortoise club is kind of hidden almost under the house of blues on state street. This is where I'm taking my hubby for our anniversary this year.
