    Dead silkie :(
    Karen H.

It's not a bad store in general. Went to chick days with my son and grandson had a good experience. Unfortunately, my silkie died in less than 24 hrs. I called Hawthorne's they said maybe give it electrolytes. I went to a closer feed store to buy it. The feed store said they just had another customer complaining about one of their chicks from Hawthorne's not doing well. I called again after the chick died and was told the only thing I could do is go back and BUY a different type. This was a huge disappointment. The other chicks we bought are doing great! Many other places have a 48 hr window. Do better Hawthorne's.

I'm only giving stars for the inventory and convenience of our little town. However. They order way too many ducklings and chicks. The last couple of times we've been there, they've had a lot of chickens and ducks that just looked horrible. To the point where we wanted to take them all home. (If we had the space we would). The last time we visited the store, all of the pullets and cockerels were in horrible shape. Missing a ton of feathers, some bleeding from their bare butts. These babies are all thrown into over crowded runs once they're fully feathered and out of the brooders. We ended up asking to take one home because it had been bullied so bad that it only had feathers on its wings. The employee said that they had put them in the bigger run and they were bullied so bad that they had to put them back into the brooder. We took the naked one home. They asked if we wanted the other one in bad shape, and my husband declined. However, when he got home and opened the box, we found both of the injured babies in there. So they snuck a chicken we didn't ask for, into the box. Now here we are, one teen with hardly any feathers and the other with a bare butt who can't even walk. Which is fine, he needs more help than we originally thought so it was fate. We had to syringe feed the one that can't walk and thankfully he's getting better, but are now going to treat for coccidiosis. Definitely paralyzed for the time being. Hoping not mareks for our flocks sake, although these two are in quarantine. We are committed to getting these babies in better health because of the terrible conditions they came from. I will add that two deceased babies were pulled out of the brooder yesterday because a customer had mentioned it. So In conclusion, it's a great feed store. But they really need better conditions for their babies that don't get adopted. Maybe not order so many?? There isn't enough room in the runs for the amount of chickens they have so they're just pecking each other to death. I hate talking bad on any of our local businesses, but this isn't fair to the chickens and ducks they sell.

    So cute!!

When I walked in, I mentioned that my dog is currently in heat. There wasn't any engagement--no "How is she doing?" or any conversation at all. Later, while I was looking at the chew bones, I mentioned I wanted to get my dog a special treat because she's been such a good girl. I asked about the difference between two products, and the response was simply, "It depends how much of a chewer your dog is." Rather than asking what breed or age my dog was, or trying to help me choose the best option, I ended up volunteering that she's a Rottweiler. The employee just pointed to one of the bones and said, "That one." When I commented that another one looked popular, the response was just, "Yep." At checkout, there was still no conversation--no greeting, no "How's your day going?" or anything that made the interaction feel welcoming. The transaction was completed, and that was it. I understand everyone has off days, and I'm not trying to be overly critical. I also recognize that maybe I caught the employee at a bad moment. However, working in a customer-facing role--especially at a specialty pet store where customers often appreciate advice and conversation--friendly engagement and genuine customer service make a big difference. Since moving to the area and covering it for work, I visit often...hope this was a one off and that this employee has a better day...b/c she sure threw my day off!

It is so nice to be able to be outside and see birds away from a store environment. This place is on 45 acres and it's kept up so beautifully. I was especially impressed when I met the owner and found out he is recovering from a health issue. The gentleman had trouble walking, but I guess he is on the mend and doing well. They have over 500 birds on premises and are so knowledgeable. I did a little research on the owner, Jerry, and he is THE expert of the breeding and caring of Toucans in captivity. While we were there he had 2 phones calls from other facilities asking for his advice on this situation or that. He with a couple of partners are the ones who developed the pellets that are now fed to these amazing creatures by zoos and other exotic owners. Super impressed with his knowledge and the knowledge of his assistant Marcella. Since Jerry is having difficulty walking, Marcella took us to the nursery. When I asked detailed questions of some of the babies, she pulled out a journal where EVERY bit of information on every bird is kept, from hatching until they are sold. I was floored. Also impressive is how friendly the babies were. They are hand raised and each one is socialized. I am definitely going to purchase a bird from here, I just love the way they start their life. The problem is deciding which one, do I choose an Aracaris or a Toucan..
