Great little neighborhood movie theater. Brings back so many memories- my mom used to take us to the bargain matinees every Christmas vacation during the late 80s/early 90s and we literally saw almost every Disney movie there. It was a nice size theatre but way too expensive. $14 to see a movie in a small screen with specks right in middle of screen, right in middle of faces on screen. Have been coming here since I was in elementary school & now I just had my daughter's 10th birthday party here ! The staff were so friendly and helpful. Love the homey & old town feeling that it has. The prices are very reasonable & the concession stands are just as good if not better than an AMC theatre. Have your next party here !!! This rating does not compare this theater to the newer reclining seats/reserve ticket joints. Rather, this review takes into account the older venues such as this one. Parking: street; nearby downtown business lots Tickets: Average price, though there is a Tuesday special for non-Sony movies. Cleanliness: Was about as clean as a teenager's basement bedroom Refreshments: Popcorn is popped somewhere other than at the concession stand and dumped into a glass case from a trash bag. It's expensive, but not hot. Candy is available, as are soft drinks and bottled water. The Coca Cola fountain "ran out" during our visit. Apparently there was no backup. Seats: They recline, whether or not you want them to. Not totally uncomfortable, but not exactly a therapeutic two hours of ass time. Screen/sound: If it's digital, it's being projected through an ancient system. The sound is fine for a non-special effects movie, but the frequency response on the (non-surround) speakers is akin to a bookshelf stereo system. Bottom line: I've been to other independent theaters like this that did a much better job at everything, including sweeping the floors and scrubbing a toilet once in a while. This place, however, really should be relegated to discount theater status for second-runs. read more

12/25/2021. This is an old fashioned movie theater (think '80s & 90s). It's clean. They have free parking across the street. The problem is it is poorly managed. We watched Westside Story. For unknown reasons they played the first 5 minutes of the movie 3 times. The manager never addressed the customers. This added an additional 20 minutes to a 2-1/2 hour movie. 3 hours is a long time. I know movie theater managers like to blame COVID, the government, Hollywood executives, etc., but this is on them. The manager could have apologized to the customers to increase the chance of a repeat customer. read more

We just moved into the area and stumbled onto this charming movie house. It was built in 1928 and harkens to the day when 'movie' was not connected with 'mall' or 'shopping center'. We felt like we had found the true neighborhood theater of our youth: comfortable, reasonably priced (very!) and staffed by super-friendly people. It offers several screens and convenient free parking. We noted the absence of steps from the parking lot to our seats and to the restrooms, and are already dreaming of bringing our elderly aunt for whom its accessibility with reopen the world of 'real' movies. My favorite theater. I only go elsewhere if they're not playing a movie I must see. I usually wait one or two weeks after a new movie is released because I don't like crowded places. So I usually end up in one of the smaller rooms, which I like, because I can see well from almost every seat. The seats are comfortable for me, which is not the case in many theaters. a film festival I help run (White Vulture Film Festival) had their first ever live event last week with all screenings held for 2 full days on 2 screens at the Hawthorne Theater... this is the first festival I have ever attended, working or not, where there were no technical difficulties... not a single one. EVERY SINGLE FILMMAKER complimented the picture sound and of course the staff... we were handled by George, Joann and their time with courtesy attentiveness and nothing but respect for our project. it is my hope that for so long as WVFF endures, that we are capable of having it in this theater every year... fantastic service but still "local" enough to be completely approachable... the festival received many compliments... half of them should have been directed straight to George, Joann and the entire staff of the Hawthorne Theater. thank you! read more

It's a small theater that's a little outdated but there are many pluses to this place. It's usually not packed so I can actually enjoy a movie without obnoxious clapping and/or people on their cell phones. The price is less on food items and ticket prices. Parking is readily available by the parking lot across the street. The customer service is good and I can get in real quick to watch a movie. read more

This is a nice small theater great to watch movies with kids at a good price. It is small and a little outdated but very clean and with nice staff. Is great to still have a no chain movie theater that you can go with your kids and don't feel like you will break the bank. It has a couple of things around like a retro arcade place, pizza place, Mexican food, Chinese food, juice bar and an Irish bar. This was my first visit to Hawthorne Theater as an adult since it's there's been a 30 year gap. It was a Tuesday at 1:30pm. The box office is outside so it can be difficult to hear with traffic on a busy street. You can't get lost in here unlike many of the megaplexes. I agree with a yelper review that it's like watching a giant television. I sat in the second row. I don't know why a bunch of kids sat in the back which meant watching a much smaller television. The sound could be better though. It's as far from IMAX as you can get but it serves it's purpose, locally. Just think small. read more

5 stars not because it's the same as an Ipic or a luxury movie theater... it's not... it's a small local theater, but it has great prices ($9 a ticket) and a super friendly staff. Movies are never sold out - simply it's a nice little place to enjoy a movie without feeling like people are sitting on top of you and having to wait in lines for everything. read more

I am so impressed. The seats are the same ones you would get in a massive multiplex, plus rocking chair ACTION. That's right, these bad boys are secret rocking chairs. Make sure yours isn't squeaky though. Updated theater's is a huge plus. I will definitely be seeing more movies here (it's right around the corner!) We saw Man of Steel last night and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. $10 for a movie ticket is a fair price. They have a huge parking lot just across the street. I love not having to worry about getting towed or getting a ticket. Their food selection was a little weak and the prices were the normal jacked up ones you expect at a theater. But -- if you will indulge my dreams for a moment-- I wish they had bubble tea from Yum Yum Bubble and Puff, that would be the most insane thing ever. Came trying to avoid any and all traffic surrounding Black Friday and was surprisingly successful. I thought a lot of people would be going to this theater because its one of a select few that aren't in/or around a shopping mall/center however, I found a parking spot right away, walked right into the theater and managed to find a really good seat for the matinee. The tickets and some of the concessions are cheaper here for a matinee than some others nearby (AMC Garden State, Warner Quad Ridgewood), which was a nice break. Best part of it all.. there were NO PREVIEWS for our movie. I'm not sure if it was something special about the day or movie but whatever the reason... it was phenomenal! The facilities are a little dated, but for all those perks it was a worthwhile trip. read more

First, it appears that this theater is run by teenagers, and only teenagers, as it is very, very rare to see an adult on site. The cleanliness, or lack of it would be indicative of that. I attended the first showing of the day this week...before the movie started I went to the restroom and the stall I picked had no toilet paper. If you are running a business wouldn't you ensure before you opened for the day that everything is ready for your customers? Another time that we attended the theater, we literally had to turn on the flashlight mode of our phones to get to our seats the theater was so dark. Another time the movie was already playing when we arrived ON TIME for it - no apology. The thing frankly, that makes me the most uncomfortable though, is the feeling that the place is dirty. It is hard to tell because the 4 theaters here are kept fairly dark so it is hard to see...just a feeling because of all of the other items I talked about above. read more

So many memories. Before the mall had a theater, as a kid you only had this and ridgewood and boy oh boy have I seen a lot of movies here. Saw a movie the other day and let's just say the place has seen better days. How they're still in business is beyond me! I love small rinky sink theaters sometimes but I think that's a charm you can totally build a theater around. Add some retro decore, old pictures, etc. The place needs to give people a reason to go there. Ridgewood had a make over and I think it's helped. Maybe the theater should focus on more art house movies I'd be sad if they went out of business though. read more

My sister and I went there today to see a movie and there was one technical problem after another. First the sound was on but no movie - I had to come out and ask them to restart it for us,which they did. Then 30 min into the movie the screen went black, so we had to come out of the theater and tell them - it took them 10 min to fix it. Then another 30 min in it went black and we had to go out and tell them again. My sister asked for a refund and they did give it to us and said that they were working on the people but did not know how long it would take or whether they even would be able to fix it. I told the manager that we could not wait indefinitely (we got a sitter to watch the kids and I did not want to have to pay her $25/hour for who knows how long while waiting for them to fix the problem.). I asked a manager if he could give me a voucher so that we could see a movie another day and he said that he already refunded me a ticket and it was not his fault (which I get - things like this happen ) and he did not feel he needed to do anything else. He was kind of irritated about me asking for a voucher so I decided I did not want it after all because I did not want to come back to a place that treats their customers that way. As I was walking to his office to tell him about it I overheard him complain about me to his colleagues telling how he did not like when people asked him for stuff. It might sound that I am greedy because he did give us a refund - no questions asked. But from my perspective - I paid over $30 to a babysitter and only was able to see part of the movie so I thought it would be fair to be compensated for part of that. As a business owner you are supposed to take care of your customers and I expecting him to OFFER me vouchers - after all, how much does it cost him to give to vouchers to a movie he is playing anyway ( this theater is hardly ever sold out). He did not, which is OK but I did not think he would give me so much trouble after I asked him for a voucher. I've been going to this movie theater for years but honestly don't think I will ever go there again - I don't want to give my $ to an establishment that clearly does not treat their customers with respect. read more

It's really nice to have a "hometown" movie theater that is within walkable distance. Tuesday nights are $6 movie tickets - can't beat that. The staff is very friendly, and the place is nice and clean. The concession stand has limited offerings, but the standard fare is there, like soda, popcorn, nachos, and some candy. I don't mind paying the higher theater prices for snacks because, let's be honest, this is the only way these theaters make money. I'm happy to support them. As a taller person, the stationary chairs can get a little uncomfortable, but some theaters have more loungey-type chairs. Theaters are more cozy than the "big name" players, but it is rarely overcrowded. read more

About a year ago, my fiance and I got tired of the terrible parking and crowds at the GSP. We rediscovered the Hawthorne Theater-the parking is amazing (right across the street and there are always spots), the popcorn is the best movie popcorn I've ever had, and there are never crazy crowds. Also, it's cheaper than most other theaters-$10, but the matinees are $7. Can't beat it! And just around the corner are a bunch of cute places to eat-a Cuban restaurant, Kirker's, and Hot Diggity Grill, so it's easy to make it a night out. read more

Short Version: Great place. I will be going here from now on. Long Version: My fiance and I booked tickets through Fandango to go see Endgame on Monday since it was sold out basically everywhere all weekend. We got to the theater and apparently Fandango had a glitch and was offering the movie at a time that they weren't actually showing it. The manager (George) came out and told us he had been trying to resolve this with them all day and offered us a chance to come back tomorrow to see the movie in addition to have 2 extra tickets to whatever movie we choose whenever we want. While my fiance and I were discussing our schedule to see if we could make it the next day, George came out and said that since theater 3 was empty he would cancel what was in there and give us our own private viewing of endgame. Just experienced Hawthorne Theaters this past weekend. The young staff were friendly enough, the matinee prices were good, and the pre-made/pre-bagged popcorn price was as expected. I found the seats to be cramped with very little legroom, and the floors of the theater were very, very dirty. I can understand maybe by the end of the day the floors are going to accumulate popcorn and other debris, but this was the first show! The poor condition was the talk of the patrons while waiting for the show to start. I'm going to search for a roomier, cleaner theater. read more
