My most favourite Japanese restaurant in the city. They opened in 2020 and since then I've been there (no exaggeration) at least 20 times for takeout. Today was my first time to actually dine in the restaurant, and it was great to see it full and people complimenting the servers about how good the food was. My go-to's at Hay Sushi are the salmon nori taco (the salty crispness of the nori taco goes perfectly with the mounds of salmon filling) and the 30 piece sashimi mori (super fresh sashimi, great variety, and amazing quality thay justifies the price). Other stuff I've had there are the pastas (the standout one for me is the sukiyaki pasta), the taco wasabi (good hot-cold combo that's a great palette cleanser) and actually any of the other nori tacos (my wife loves the beef one). Also, their homemade cheesecake is superb (really creamy, nice nutty crust) Service, whether dining in or taking out, is friendly and efficient. Hay Sushi is definitely the best sushi I have ever had in Toronto. Especially their tacos, it was my first time trying this type of sushi, and it felt both innovative and delicious. The crispy fried seaweed elevated the overall texture of the sushi to a whole new level. The other party trays they offer are also above average, so I highly recommend everyone to give them a try. Hay sushi wasn't the best sushi I've had in Toronto but it's definitely above average. Rather than a Japanese restaurant, I think their dishes taste more like Korean. Their food is sweet and doesn't taste authentic. Their sushi wasn't super fresh but acceptable. I wouldn't recommend ordering their sukiyaki pasta as it's just one of those beef fried noodles using pasta instead of noodles. Their sushi tacos are special but too sweet for me and I couldn't taste the freshness of their tuna. I really like Hay sushi! Situated near yonge and sheppard is this awesome sushi spot. The ambience is really cozy and nice inside. Came on a Friday night and was seated right away. The place got busy so my group got lucky. Ordered a few dishes to share (tacos, aburi sushi, tuna avo roll, seaweed salad, and tempura). The aburi sushi was definitely my favourite - I liked the salmon the best. Tempura was also very nice. I didn't like the seaweed salad that much. Tacos were also surprisingly good! I have only ever gotten delivery or pick up but the food never disappoints. Ever time we always order the taco (usually salmon or tuna) and the nori shells stays crunchy after delivery and at time of eating. It is definitely one of the more unique items on their menu and worth trying! It has lots of stuffing and beware, a bit difficult to eat cleanly :) Their pressed sushi is pretty good as well but we enjoy getting their 27pc sushi tray for a good variety of nigiri. One thing to note is pickup times are often delayed due to how busy and hectic they are. As well, I usually ask for no wasabi but they put it in anyway. A solid spot for sushi near Yonge/Sheppard. The interior is cozy and spacious, has almost a Wes Anderson film vibe. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was amazing. We got the sushi party tray which had a variety of high-quality premium pieces of nigiri. Ordered these yesterday via UberEats. I think i paid like $100. It's probably not a good thing to do. Just call and pick up to see the actual price of the food. For the sushi - it was great! I was able to satisfy my craving and I could say that I didn't need to put added wasabi and soy sauce on them. It was really amazing! The taste of the sushi rice is not overpowering nor overcompensating the fish unlike the fast food sushi joint. I agree with another review in that everything tasted sweet. I ordered unagi and avocado hand roll, ebi mayo, and salmon nori tacos. Unagi normally comes with a sweet sauce, but the taste of sweetness overpowered any other flavor. Salmon tasted just like tuna just like shrimp. The restaurant was a bit small, but completely packed with a long line of customers waiting to get in - which is always a good sign. We ordered the 3 shellfish roll (lobster, shrimp and crabmeat), salmon nori tacos, yuzu salmon oshi, double shrimp oshi. You really can't go wrong with any of the torched sushi. Damn a new favourite for me! Can't believe I had not discovered this gem sooner. Great little sushi spot near the busy Yonge / Sheppard hub. Hay Sushi is off to a smaller street where there is street parking available. We came in on a Friday evening and had a ~30 min or so wait which we easily killed strolling around the nearby shops. We ordered the Sushi Tacos, the special sushi set 12 pc, and the Hay roll. The sushi tacos were a stand-out for me. Absolutely delicious with the crispy exterior and fresh sushi topping. This relatively new sushi restaurant in North York (near Yonge & Sheppard) does fusion Japanese food really well. Salmon Nori Taco & Tuna Nori Taco - The taco shell made out of seaweed is very unique and crispy. Each taco comes with rice, a generous amount of fish, and some greens. The Salmon Nori Taco contains crab meat salad, cilantro, and garlic mayo. The Tuna Nori Taco contains pico de gallo (fresh salsa with tomato pieces) and sweet soy sauce. The size of each taco is quite big (bigger than your palm hand), and the fact that it comes with rice, protein, and a bit of greens makes it almost a complete meal that's quite filling. Japanese Eggplant & Mushroom Pasta - This is my favourite wafu pasta out of the ones they offer. There are big pieces of eggplant and 3 types of mushrooms (shimeji, button, and king oyster mushrooms), and the Japanese flavours (tsuyu sauce which contains bonito flakes & furikake) blend really well with the al dente spaghetti pasta. Very flavourful. Also love the green onions mixed in. Ankake Egg & Crab Pasta - This one has a more subtle flavour compared to the Japanese Eggplant & Mushroom Pasta, and a softer texture. It's still delicious. The sauce reminds me a bit of the black bean sauce in Jajangmyeon (Korean-Chinese noodle dish). There are little pieces of zucchini and onion in the pasta, along with arugula and green onions. The crab meat is made up of strands of fake crab (made of pollock fish). Moriawase - Special Sushi Set (12 pieces): Very high-quality, fresh, great-tasting sushi that are presented beautifully. The rice is perfect, and the protein on top is high-quality. The set contains salmon, tuna, yellowtail, European sea bass, black sea bream, ikura (salmon roe), unagi (eel), Botan shrimp, sweet shrimp, scallops, octopus, squid. The set comes with a bit of microgreens to add colour - a nice touch for presentation (and can never go wrong with a bit of extra veggies). The tacos and wafu pasta make Hay Sushi really stand out among other places serving fusion Japanese dishes. The tacos are so crispy and the fillings are so tasty. The Japanese flavours of the wafu pasta and ingredients just work so well together, and it's a nice break from the usual Italian-style pasta. Their sushi and sashimi are also super fresh and everything about them are perfect - the rice, the seaweed, the protein. Highly recommended if you're looking for a different Japanese cuisine experience, or a sushi restaurant that is different than the rest. Super excited to check out this new sushi restaurant after seeing some fantastic reviews on social media. We tried their special sushi set, some sushi rolls, the nori tacos, and the wafu pasta. Everything was super delicious but what stood out for me were definitely the nori tacos and the wafu pastas, which you can't really find at other restaurants in the area. The nori tacos are a bit similar to sushi burritos, where the taco shell is made of tempura nori, while the fillings are a mix of sashimi, sushi rice, veggie mix, and a drizzle of sauces. The shell was so nice and crispy, definitely something that I would come back for more. For the wafu pastas, they offer 4 different kinds on the menu, but my favourite has got to be the cold beef shabu pasta. It has a sweet and tangy sesame sauce, which is very refreshing, and I also like how tender the beef was. They also have some for hearty pasta options as well if you're looking for some comfort food for fall. I'm also very impressed with the quality of the nigiri sushi and sushi rolls that we got. The special sushi set has a nice selection of 12pc sushi, including salmon, tuna, scallop, yellow fin, and more. The fish was very fresh and the sushi had a nice ratio between the fish and the rice. For the sushi rolls, I really like the sakura blossom roll because of the spicy salmon on top. Overall, very impressed with my visit at Hay Sushi. I was super glad to have a new sushi joint open and I was not disappointed one bit when I ordered take out from them earlier this month (thank you Instagram for bringing me there!). Was recommended to come here by a few friends and was not disappointed. We came on a Sunday evening around 6:30pm and we were able to get a seat right away. Although, I've heard it gets busy so best to reserve ahead. Inside is a nice sushi bar feel with the wood elements. Service was pretty good as someone always checked to see if we were ready to order, top up our drinks and clear our plates. The menu is a QR code. It's quite long as they have lunch specials, a la cart, sushi sets, appetizers, etc. it was our first time here so it took us a while to figure out what we wanted to try. We ended up getting the spicy salmon tacos ($15.50), creamy miso pasta ($17.95), special sushi set 12pc ($29.95) and truffle aburi sushi 10pc ($29.95). The spicy salmon tacos were our favourite. The shell was seaweed tempura and was so crispy. The spicy salmon was very fresh and light. The pasta was surprisingly good as well. Very creamy and tasty with the mushrooms, shrimp and roe. Got to thank the previous Yelp reviewers for letting me know that a new sushi restaurant just opened up in my neighborhood. We called the restaurant at around 5:30pm on a Saturday to order take-out. However, after calling twice no one picked up so we decided to order in person at the restaurant. Once we got there at around 6pm, they politely told us that they have lots of orders and as a result our food won't be available until 8pm, which was not a problem for us. As we waited to order and pay, 2 parties came in to pick up food and another 2 parties came in to order. It is nice to see a new business thriving during COVID-19. We ordered the 12 piece special sushi set and the sashimi punch (a luxurious version of futomaki) Their take-out packaging was simple but has all the things you need - chopsticks, soya sauce packets, wasabi, pickled ginger, napkins - and to my surprise small plastic trays to pour your soya sauce in! They certainly used premium sashimi in the 12 piece sushi set - e.g botan ebi and ikura. The fish was fresh and they pair most nigiri with a light sauce or garnish to make it more gourmet. I love how they fried the shrimp heads so you get a nice crunch. However, I find the rice in the nigiri a bit under seasoned and I had to added soya sauce even for the pieces with a glaze/sauce on the sashimi. The futomaki was filled with hamachi (yellowtail), salmon, maguro (tuna), ikura (salmon roe) and tamago (egg). I didn't find the need to add any soya sauce to this as the ikura brought mild saltiness and the pickled ginger incorporated in the roll brought a tangy flavour. I saw the '20% off with cash' sign and the menu looked pretty good so I decided to give this place a try. I've had Sushi tacos in dt before and absolutely loved it so I knew I had to give this one a try. I've got their tuna tacos, salmon tacos, aburi shrimp and aburi salmon. The tuna tacos was probably my favourite. Good mix of ingredients and well balanced. The tacos were a bit oily than I thought but I still liked it. Salmon tacos reminded me of the rolls at VIPS sushi with a imitation crab+mayo mix in it so I'd rather get a roll there due to the price. Still good but it tastes more oily due to the combination of fried nori(seaweed) and mayo. Aburi shrimp: pretty good with a hint of garlic mayo that goes well with the sushi. Aburi salmon: I like this one more than the shrimp. They both have mayo but I'm a sucker for aburi salmon+mayo. Overall, the service was nice and the price was great due to the 20% off discount. It might be a bit overpriced if it wasn't for the discount though. I'm actually very interested in their moriawase because I love raw shrimp so I'd love to give that a try and see how it compares. Dining in at Hay Sushi was a treat. The interior of the restaurant is very cozy and spacious, with plenty of room and tables to accommodate groups of all sizes. When we called to reserve a table, we were told it wasn't necessary - and sure enough, we were seated right away. The service was friendly, though I did notice that some tables seemed to be overlooked and were in need of service. We arrived with a group of three and decided to share several dishes. We were offered hot tea in a cup ($2 per person) or a pot ($5) to share, and we opted for the pot. All the food we saw making its way to tables looked mouth-watering, and our dishes did not disappoint. Everything we ordered was fresh, delicious, and presented beautifully. I would re-order everything. The tempura mix was portioned well and crispy, deep-fried to perfection. The spicy salmon kani taco was great - deep-fried and plenty of filling with a good ratio between rice, sashimi, and mayo crab. It was a tiny bit dry since there wasn't a lot of garlic mayo sauce, but still tasty. The price point is fairly pricey, but it's definitely worth it as an indulgence. I also got to try the creamy miso pasta. The portion for this dish was fairly small and suited for 1 person, but very flavorful with the miso cream sauce. It was not too heavy and perfectly seasoned. To wrap up the meal, we ordered a Mirawase to share, which was the Special Sushi Set (12PC). It came with Bluefin Tuna, Ikura (salmon roe), Ama ebi (sweet shrimp), Hotate (scallop), Tako (octopus), Unagi (eel), Aori Ika (squid), Salmon, Hamachi (yellowtail), Hirame (Fluke), and Kurodai (sea bream). We tried the Atlantic Gate roll, mixed tempura, salmon nori tacos, seaweed salad, and sushi lunch set B. The tacos were really good!! I've had sushi tacos before and they were underwhelming but I really enjoyed these. It needs a bit more sauce but the crispy fried seaweed was good. The mixed tempura was also good, I find it hard to find tempura that isn't over battered. The shrimp was a bit over battered in my opinion. I usually look forward to the tempura sauce, this one wasn't strong enough. The Atlantic gate roll was really good! We had doubts about asparagus inside the roll but you couldn't taste it. Everything was delicious - such great quality sushi/sashimi - fresh and melt-in-mouth. You can tell it's good qualify when the rice from the sushi is equally decadent- perfect loose and rice-vinegar-y cónistency, breaks apart easily. It was sweet, creamy and delectable. My second favourite dish was the scallop Yuzu aburi. It was very flavourful and you could really tell the quality of their rolls. Ordered a salmon nori taco and a Napolitan pasta for take out. They offer a 10%.cash discount. First impression - I called them at 5 pm and they told me to pick up at 530. I was literally across the street and asked if it could be sooner, and they said no. I arrived at 515 and the food was already sitting there! It would have been out for another 15 minutes if I had been "on time" The "nori taco' is basically an unwrapped salmon maki with crunchy seaweed shaped into a taco shell. As such, it would taste much better if they either added some sauce into the taco (spicy mayo comes to mind) or a dipping soy sauce. It came with neither. The Japanese style pasta came loaded with sausages - and not much else. The first couple of bites I tasted a burnt flavour. The portion was decent but that was about all it had going for it. We also got separate rolls which is more to our liking as we r not fans of any rolls with the cheese in it. The pasta is good too just a little on the pricey side. I love going here. The asthetic here is clean and wooden and the food is delicious. I always order the creamy miso pasta. I personally think it's their best dish. I like mine a little spicy so you can ask for some togarashi to mix into there for a nice kick. The Tempura is super breaded and crispy and the sushis taste fresh. Usually there is plenty of parking available on the street but don't forget to pay for greenp. Unfortunately they don't have wifi available which is the only downside that I would note about this place. Servers are pretty attentive but can sometimes forget certain items however they make up for it with their friendly service. Ordered take out from here on a Friday evening through the Uber app. The Uber app had specific items at a discounted price. The Uni sushi was one of them. Very fresh fish although I am not sure about the salmon sashimi as part of the skin was kept on. Maybe it's supposed to be like that but I would prefer to not have the skin on. The a la cart sushi menu is quite affordable compared to other Japanese restaurants. The pieces are small but they are packed with freshness. The hotate sushi and uni sushi was amazing !! Definitely will order again. The sweet shrimp is a bit small as I thought it would've been the larger sweet shrimp. After hearing so many positive reviews from friends about Hay Sushi, I finally had the opportunity to try it. Food 4/5 We ordered the Atlantic Gate Roll, sushi party tray and two nori tacos. I was a bit concerned that I would be eating a soggy taco considering Hay Sushi is ~30 minutes away from my home but it surprisingly held up well. The taco shells were crisp without being too greasy and were loaded with ample ingredients. The tuna was definitely my preferred one as the shrimp didn't really have much flavour in my opinion. The fish was fresh and I enjoyed the lightly seasoned rice as it didn't overpower the flavour of the fish. The Atlantic Gate roll was just okay, there wasn't really any bite and seemed mushy to eat due to the ingredients. Service 2/5 Long story short, I called the restaurant to see if they could accommodate making my order earlier than my original pick up time. Employee gave me a time but said something else in error and it resulted in waiting a full hour for food. She said she would call once the order was ready but didn't. If you're not going to call, then don't say you will. I'm not expecting you to drop all orders to make mine but would've hoped for some better time management and seeing other reviews, I'm not the only one who experienced this. If I'd have to wait a full hour I would've either cancelled my original order to place another one or gone somewhere else. All in all the food was well presented and was good portions. Located near Yonge and Sheppard, Hay Sushi is a premium Japanese restaurant, and the hype lives up to the expectations. Following the advice from other reviewers, we ordered a couple of "12 piece sushi moriwase" and they were absolutely delicious! Premium pieces of fish, from hamachi to ebi to sea bream. There was one piece of salmon in it but it is no ordinary salmon... you can tell that it is the high quality kind that just melts in your mouth. We also ordered the salmon nori tacos. WOW! Crispy on the outside, savoury and delicate on the inside. It's definitely got some amazing mouth-feel to it, and it is a perfect appetizer before chowing down on the moriwase set. Currently, they have a 20% off cash deal. Definitely get in on this before the promotion is over, because that is incredible value. We've already eaten from here twice since discovering them. Delicious sushi and a solid spot, but it's a bit $$ with all the alternative options available. Fish is really fresh though and the torched sushi are great! Best value I've seen so far is the lunch menu but we did get a box for dinner once and it was lovely. They took the time to package everything nicely in a wooden box. Yes!! I'm so excited for a sushi restaurant like this to open up in the North York area! Previously a local izakaya favourite known as Ogadang, this spot has undergone a complete rebranding to reinvent themselves as Hay Sushi, a restaurant offering a balance between traditional Japanese moriawase and innovative fusion eats. Hay Sushi opened their doors to business earlier last week (Sep 1) and at the moment, appear to only serve takeout and online orders. My partner and I paid them a visit today and we honestly wanted to try everything on the menu! We ended up settling for the following: [Salmon/Tuna Nori Taco] We tried both flavours because uh hello, who doesn't love tacos? and both were SO delicious and fresh. The tacos were generously stuffed with chunks of fish and all of the accessory fillings. The salmon taco had a creamier undertone with garlic mayo, cilantro, and baby greens, while the tuna taco was sweeter and juicier with sweet soy sauce and pico de gallo. I've had Japanese-Mexican fusion before (The Haam) but this one really tops it because the SHELL, oh my god, the shell is incredible. The taco shell is made with deep fried seaweed (nori) akin to when you have Korean seaweed rolls and it is so crunchy and flavourful, acting as the perfect complement to the soft sushi rice and smooth fish. This is definitely a unique one-of-a-kind item that I haven't seen anywhere else so I'd say this is a must-try! [12pc Nigiri Sushi Moriawase] Now this is what I'm talking about!! Stripping a Japanese restaurant down to its core lies the chef's vision for how they want their sushi to be received and Hay Sushi really knocks it out of the park with their moriawase set. I got an incredible assortment of high quality and fresh nigiri, each piece handcrafted with care and paired with a complementing garnish. Among my favourite were the tuna with shaved egg yolk, botan ebi with innards, scallop with yuzu rind, ama ebi with green masago, and ikura with scallions. Just typing all of that out is making me drool again! This moriawase wasn't just a pleasure for the eyes (10/10 photogenic) but also for my palate. [Neapolitan Wafu Pasta w/ Italian Sausage] Last but not least, we wanted to do our due diligence in exploring the menu and indulge ourselves with one of the most popular pasta dishes in Japan inspired by the West - the Neapolitan. The spaghetti was cooked soft and the cream sauce was fragrant and light, infused with the sweet flavours of grape tomatoes and bell peppers. Then, of course, there was Italian sausage, and the final garnishes of grated parmesan and a touch of dried parsley for good measure. Overall, I'm really impressed with this restaurant and their refreshing take on Japanese fusion as well as Japanese traditional offerings. All of the food was delicious and you can tell they put a lot of care, thought, and innovation into their recipes. Covid's been tough on a lot of local businesses and I'm really glad to see Ogadang persevere, rebrand, and put up one heck of a fight! I tried this place after seeing Tracy RAVE about this place on her Instagram. We ordered through UberEats, but they also have really good pickup/cash opening specials. We tried: - 12 pc Nigiri Sushi Moriawase: SO SO good. There was clearly a lot of thought that went into each piece in terms of how many invisible cuts to make to the fish, and what toppings to accompany each piece of fish. The types of fish were also premium: we had scallop, sea urchin, ikura, botan ebi, eel, etc. Amazingly worth it for $22! - Salmon Nori Taco: At first these seemed a little expensive ($12 for two?) but they're HUGE. They're packed with fish and everything is so perfectly seasoned. The crispiness of the nori taco shell stayed crunchy even with ordering through UberEats, and balanced out the flavours so perfectly. I'm craving another just writing this. Food was amazing but the service is too. The restaurant actually called us after we placed our UberEats order because to let us know that our order would be delayed because they ran out of sushi rice. Our order was delayed by about half an hour, but they gave us a free appetizer. They also substituted our Amaebi (sweet shrimp) with Uni (sea urchin)! I've already been recommending it to literally everyone I talk to. I can't wait to come back! read more
