    Hot Sake
    Nickie B.

Summary Review: Bad service at this location. Special Note: Even the hours posted on their front door are often incorrect. The first 3 times I attempted to eat here, they were closed for one reason or another. Full Monty: After three experiences here, I feel prepared to rate this Hayashi location. Sushi Bar Chefs - 5 stars Sushi - 3 stars Waitstaff/Servers - 2 stars Sushi is acceptable for Lubbock (or any landlocked area), however the service from the waitstaff is abysmal. My server today had so much perfume on, that it permeated the air and I could almost taste it. On my visit 5-27-22 (12:41pm). I asked to sit at the sushi bar. I sat one down from the end (on the right - Bar 1 B). The server took my order and came back promptly with a water and a napkin wrapped fork. Being that I sat at the sushi bar, I would have expected to also be given chopsticks. Side note, I did not use the fork. About 5 min after ordering, I noticed that the sushi chef had just made my order. The chef looked at me and nodded to let me know that it was my order and I had permission to take the 2 plates. BTW, my server was nowhere near. Immediately after getting my food, my server poured my hot sake and proceeded to push it across the large counter....to me. She wanted me to lean across the empty char and lean forward to maximum stretch capacity to get my hot sake? Um excuse me, are you to lazy to bring it to me? The young female server did not want to walk around the bar area to hand me the sake. After getting my sake, she rushed off into the kitchen without asking if I needed anything. 5-7 min later she appeared on the other side of the restaurant and I was able to catch her eye to ask for chopsticks, a napkin and a soy sauce dish. She located those items and...yes she pushed it across the bar again....stretch #2 for me. I typically tip 20-25% for service, on this visit it pained me to leave 15%.

I have to give this a 2 star because of the service. I've eaten here so many times over the last few years and the overall average review is this; I can expect decent whatever-I-order... and I can expect a water/waitress that could practically let grass grow beneath their feet. IF I could review the kitchen and sushi chefs differently, I would. But the FOH staff sets the mood. I continue to eat here because their placement is pretty brilliant- it's in a convenient place, close to my work, close to where I live, and on the way to the places i like to spend my time. We had a party of four. We ordered 6 sushi rolls accumulatively- one of which was incorrect when it came out, another was missing entirely. After waiting 45 minutes. Maybe it's something we wouldn't have particularly noticed while reconnecting in conversation over drinks, but we had plans to be elsewhere at a certain time... and we should have had AMPLE time to make the other reservation. One of my friends was going to order another roll during the meal and by the time we got our food and they had misheard her order and brought out the wrong one, well, at that point you just have to leave a little hungry if you want to continue on to our other plans. I ordered a flavored sake, cold, and it came out hot. I was "reassured" that it was "room temp"- but I've had the same hands attached to my body long enough to know that 1. IT WAS WARMER THAN ROOM TEMP and 2, It's not what I asked for- AND it wasn't offered to be remedied when I mentioned it was incorrect, instead I was told it wasn't the temperature I claimed it to be...as if I (and everyone else at the table) was hallucinating. Cool. Thanks. Color me "meh". If you're nearby and wanting sushi, go for it. But don't expect much by way of service.

I had the Jay Roll. Wow, it was delish. If I could eat here once a week I would. I can't wait till my next trip to Lubbock

Ahi Hayashi Tuna Tower in a bowl???
    Anthony B.

I was attending a training session in Lubbock and a high-ranking city official recommended Hayashi as his favorite Asian restaurant in town. Disclaimer: I am a bit of a food snob, so it is really hard to impress me. The food was certainly good, but not mind-blowing. The menu pretty much had the standard selection of rolls, appetizers, and all the other dishes one would expect. I had an Ahi tower and shrimp shumai. I found it odd that the tower was served in a bowl rather than a large plate, which made it difficult to mix up before eating. Also, the shumai were served with a pile of lettuce, which was strange. I'm all for creative presentation, but neither of the above added anything to their respective dishes. It all tasted good though! The area this place shined brightest was the service. I was in and out quickly. My waitress, Carissa, was top notch... friendly and attentive. Not a life-changing experience, but I would not steer anyone away from here. Lubbock is not exactly known as a sushi Mecca, so...

    Great service at the bar

While we had great service and a fun, knowledgable server at the bar - the freshness and flavor was as the rating suggests - Meh. Wanted to like this place - but its a No from me.

Bento Boxes are the best Here. They do still serve Hibachi for those who like it but without the table theatrics but it's still just as delicious. But alas my go to meal is the bento boxes. Sushi selection here is amazing too. All around great food and ambiance. Service is always friendly and they are very attentive.

I loved their rolls. The Shrimp tampura roll is a must try. The spicey salmon is also worth trying. Staffs are nice & friendly.

I believe the times are skewed.... They close at 9:30 weekdays and 10:30 on weekends.

This is one of the 4-5 places my wife and I eat when in Lubbock. We go to Lubbock 4x per year (daughter at Tech). Never had a bad here.

We arrived early evening so there was plenty of seating. Our server was Megan. She was excellent. We started off with the sidewinders - shrimp and cheese stuffed in a jalapeno and fried. They were tasty. We also ordered the steak tip salad and went old school with the chopped steak. All were delicious. I even enjoyed one of their home brews - Windmill Wheat. We were too stuffed for dessert, so we ordered a bread pudding to go... Oh, my deliciousness - I had the bread pudding later that night, I wish we had ordered two. Highly recommend it!!! Great place to eat, fun ambiance, good food, and if you're lucky, you'll get Megan as your server. We'll definitely be back!

Regular ranch and chipotle ranch were ok. I definitely prefer the green chile sticks and ranch at Blue Sky. I also ordered the chicken pot pie with creamed spinach and 4 cheese Mac-n-cheese. I was served mashed potatoes instead of the Mac-n-cheese, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The waiter got me a side of the Mac-n-cheese, but it was horrible. The cheese had a weird texture almost grainy and did not have a good flavor. The creamed spinach was very good as well as the and the pot pie. Mashed potatoes were decent, not a big fan of red skinned mashed potatoes with the skin. The server was very friendly.

Children were crying, running from table to table and parents were not fazed in the least. I realize you have very little control with the parents. At prices these days and after raising 4 kids myself (if my children acted out or cried they were taken outside out of respect for the other patrons) I find it an unpleasant evening out. It was not just us that were affected .... Other tables around us commented and were displeased as well. Someone commented that when they came in there were very few diners .... His comment was it was probably due to the kiddos! Maybe my next review could be a bit more positive because the food was very good. I have kids and grandkids... and I am not a complainer but I don't want to be seated near these families if they cannot manage their own children.

There were chips in the table and everything looks a little worn. We had a steak and shrimp, with mashed potatoes and the okra. We also tried the brisket queso. Everything actually had good flavor and was prepared correctly. However, the Okra, the queso, the steak, the shrimp and rice were WAY WAY over salted. Literally, almost unedible. We mentioned it to Savannah and she noted that we were not the first people to mention the saltiness. We didn't want anything comped but she was gracious and comped the queso. SO, we took one for the team...if you get something that is too salted....send it back. We will go back and give it another try.
