We stopped in Buffalo on our way to Boston and made a beeline to Hayes Seafood House. A local institution, Hayes has been serving up fresh seafood prepared in a wide range of presentations since 1877. Hayes is nothing fancy; the star here is the seafood. Counter service and popularity requires a bit of a wait but that is necessary to decide what to order from the bountiful catch on offer. We started with raw oysters and clams casino. Freshly shucked oysters are a thing of beauty and Hayes did not disappoint. The Clams Casino are a house specialty which we highly recommend for the experience of a unique dish. We both ordered the broiled haddock and scallops for our entrees and could not have been happier. Perfectly seasoned and generous portions ensured a fabulous dinner. I honestly didn't go into this with high expectations... but that's solely because of learning it was a "counter" restaurant. And boy was I WRONG! The absolute best lunch my mother-in-law and I have had in a VERY long time. This is by far the most incredible and freshest seafood in the area. We got there shortly after opening so it was not busy, but by noon, the line was out the door. Very clean restaurant. You can tell they pay attention to the place. Great decor, friendly staff. Plenty of seating room. The menu was a bit overwhelming. I ended up getting the blackened haddock platter (with red potatoes and coleslaw) and mom got the lake perch with the same sides. We both were in love at our first bite. The haddock was perfectly seasoned and I had no doubts it was cooked well. Lately I feel some places I have been served fish that isn't done. No doubts here. Coleslaw was saucy and flavorful. Potatoes were delicious and the meal also came with a roll. The perch meal was exactly what my mother in law was hoping for. She hadn't had it in a while and it was a heaping portion. She said it "barely" had much taste, which was a plus for her. The batter was clean, and you can tell fresh oil was in the fryer. I finally got around to trying Hayes and I see why it is always busy! It's very good! I ordered the blackened seafood platter and it was enough food for 2-3 people, depending on how much you eat. Me and my son shared all of the seafood and potatoes, while I had the corn on the cob and he had the roll. We were both happy. I'm sure you can tell by my photo, there was no shortage of seasoning and flavor here. Nothing was dry. Loved my scallops the most! The potatoes were nice and tender without being over-cooked. The corn was as perfectly cooked and nice and sweet. I didn't have to add any butter or salt due to the nice flavor. I would absolutely have Hayes again! FYI: you can order delivery (at least through a platform like DoorDash), place an order by phone, or dine in. There is indoor and limited outdoor seating that I saw anyway. Ambiance is old school fish house setting where you order at the counter and take a seat. Half dozen oysters at a reasonable priced appetizer. The entrees come with two sides (broiled haddock was well seasoned). Best part of driving outside the city limits (something I rarely do) was the speed of their service and friendly service. All done in less than an hour. Next best thing there is the in house fish market. Fresh fish and seafood you can purchase for at home preparation. Back in Buffalo for the holidays - had to get a perfect fish fry since San Diego doesn't have them - and my brother reminded me of this place. I used to live walking distance some years back and would go every Friday. Years later you know what? It didnotdisappoint We ordered the haddock fish fry with fries and a side of clam strips. Ohhhhh man. Sooo delicious! I left feeling full and happy lol. My brother ordered the lobster bisque and said it was delish. The only thing I would improve on is that they didn't let me know someone would bring the food over to us. And there weren't any numbers to place on the table so it wasn't obvious. I am an ol school fan of Hayes, but times change I guess. In the last couple years I've been lucky to go at best twice a year. Went today - first time in maybe 1.5 to 2 yrs. Just end of lunch on friday. Location in perfect - 2 parking lots, upon entrance to the right is the fresh seafood counter ( I've never ordered from ). Straight ahead is the order taker....then it's self seating -Maybe 8 to 10 tables there and a main dining area. Facility is clean, staff is polite. Now the Food - major disappointment. Ordered Seafood Platter and a Haddock n Shrimp. Orders were on small side - cole slaw was my favorite, Roll was ok, Fries were horrible - were like the cheap overseasonsed fries, Seafood - blah, Gone I guess is the Piece of Haddock that flakes the portion was 1/3 thickness with about 20% fried batter - scallops (bay?) were 4 the size of a nickel and off tasting, 4 shrimp were ok but woulda preferred more batter n crunch. My daughter didn't even want her shrimp. For a total of between 75 and 80 bucks it was seriously lacking. Fallen from my preferred to a 3 / 5 star at best. I'll be going elsewhere. read more

When you first enter it's not very clearly labeled about what to do but wait in the line and soon you'll order your food. The staff weren't very clear about how the tables work either but we found a seat and waited for them to bring the food we ordered up front. There were some great options and some things that fell flat. The lobster rolls were very good but the calamari wasn't very good and the sauce that accompanied it wasn't great. None of the sides were great but the staff that came to the table were friendly. For the price you pay for everything I think I was expecting more of a wow factor. read more

Wow!!! We might have a new fish fry spot for the off-season! This was a spur of the moment decision for dinner and I think we made the right one. We had family in from out of town and they were craving fish fries. Instead of going back to the usual, we tried somewhere new. I got the fish fry and my wife got the lobster roll. My fish was cooked perfectly. It had a good crispy outside and a good flavor. The lobster roll was delicious. The roll was warm and thick and the amount of lobster was perfect. This review is long overdue. I have been coming to Hayes for years, mostly at lunchtime, as it can get quite busy at dinner time. It is important to note that Hayes' business has two sides. An outstanding FRESH retail seafood counter to the right side of the building once you enter, and a great CLEAN casual seafood restaurant to the left. I always peruse the fresh seafood case upon entering. The variety and presentation of quality offerings is always IMPRESSIVE. The family owned business culture that owner Nick (an extremely friendly and modest guy) and team have created, is focused on personalized customer service that consistently exceeds expectations. The atmosphere is one of a casual New England restaurant. The regular menu offerings are extensive, and the daily lunch and dinner specials are always creative with generous portions. Order at the counter and your food is delivered to your table, and it's delicious. Beer and wine are available, and the daily soup specials are amazing! The food at Hayes is absolutely superb! You haven't had a real fish fry until you've had it with fresh fish! The fry is perfectly golden and crisp and the fish just flakes away beautifully with eat bite! Their fries are also amazing and have that battered type of fry to them that makes them super crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The portions are huge so come in hungry or plan to share! My partner loved the fried clams and my bang bang shrimp was seriously THE BEST shrimp I've ever had! We will definitely be going back soon. I was in the mood for something different at lunch time and instead of getting a typical sub, pizza, etc. I was craving seafood. It was a warm, muggy afternoon with threats of storms and suddenly I thought of seafood! There is an excellent seafood house in our area that I knew would hit the spot. What other way to treat myself than with a fresh lobster roll sandwich! I thought, I deserve it! I went onto their website and saw I could call ahead to place an order and they opened at noon. I called a few minutes after and with my sandwich I was offered fries, coleslaw, or potato salad. I went with the slaw for a "slightly" healthier option. I was told it would be ready by 12:30. I arrived ten minutes prior but had no problem waiting to go in because all of a sudden, the threatening skies opened up and the downpour of cats & dogs began! Wow! It was a fast rain and 12:30 came in no time and I was able to dodge through some sprinkles unharmed. I walked in and there is a seafood bar right in front in which you can place an order to sit in or take out. Not to mention, you can get fresh fish, shrimp, etc to take home and make! I went to the counter and my order was all set. I quickly paid and ran back to my car eager to enjoy my delectable treat! The lobster was so tender, and the bun was a soft buttery crunch, mixed with the mayo and celery. My mouth was in heaven! I took my time enjoying the bites as this meal was not to be rushed. We've heard a lot of good things about Hayes so decided it was time to check it out. Nothing too crazy, just a normal fish fry. Well at the same time we happened to be looking at fish fries from a local grocery store and decided to do a taste test to see the difference in a $14.99 fish fry and one you pay $8.99 for. The actual fish from Hayes had a nice crust and the fish itself was flaky and fresh, very good.. the other fish was just ok.. The rest of the meal fell short. There was a TINY pile of french fries with no crispness to them at all. In comparison the store order came with a huge order of crispy nicely seasoned fries.. The cole slaw tasted ok but again in a tiny container. Actually it tasted exactly like the store cole slaw, in other words, not freshly made, probably from the same large container the store used. The roll was ok but I much preferred the rye bread in the other order. Oh and forgot to mention, the other meal also came with a nice macaroni salad. Bottom line, the piece of fish itself from Hayes was very good but the overall meal was a disappointment. I'll go back again and perhaps just get the fish or try a different meal. 2021-21 read more

This used to be my go to seafood take out place, but I was super disappointed in my last couple purchases. We ordered the Italian Haddock and crab cake dinners with the New England Clam chowder on Saturday. Everything was super tasty , but, the haddock was not cut properly and had a hard exoskeleton left on a good portion, my crab cake had two chunks of shell and to top it off, I got a grill wire stuck in my cheek from my vegetables. I'm lucky I didn't swallow it! Last take out had poorly cleaned scallops, full of sand. I just thought it was a one off, but it wasn't. I called ahead and ordered takeout on a Friday evening. I decided to get the Seafood platter which consists of fried haddock fish, scallops, shrimp, along with fries coleslaw and a dinner roll. I also ordered a side of onion rings. The food was really good and was not greasy. When I picked up my order it was piping hot! Tip: Crack open the togo container so your fried food doesn't sweat and get soggy. The only thing I didn't like is that there was no ketchup for the fries and they only give you one tarter sauce for the huge piece of fish. Otherwise food was spot on delicious The employees are professional. The restaurant/market is clean and fresh. That food and 2 cans of pop came to just under $50, not the cheapest lunch for two people but the quality and homemade touches made it worth it as a treat. The lobster bisque was very good but pretty similar to it at nice restaurants (good but nothing too different about it which if it ain't broke don't fix it so that's A-okay), the clams casino were fantastic, perfect as an appetizer. The shrimp dinner was fried in our favorite style, with the light corn meal batter they do in the south. The shrimp were a good size and super fresh. I haven't had them that good since I was in Cape Cod!! Very impressed by the quality. The key lime pie tasted homemade and was delicious.
