Three friends went for Tea at the historic Asa Ransom House. The food was presented on a beautiful three tiered stand as one would expect at a Tea. The bottom layer held delicate, crust-less, savory finger sandwiches, 4 for each of us, all very tasty. On the second level were delicious scones and there were three spreads offered to enhance their flavor - lemony butter, what may have been clotted cream (not sure), and a fruity jam. On the top tier there were sweet cookies and cakes. The room was decorated with old fashioned country curtains, decorative wall paper, and fancy table cloths - a perfect back drop for this experience. The servers were attentive, prompt and friendly. For my updated review, I came with 3 friends for afternoon tea. We were excited to try it, as none of us had ever been for tea and I hadn't been back under the new ownership. Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed in our overall experience. Each guest is given a sheet of paper where you can select 3 teas. The server didn't explain this was per person so we were confused thinking it was 3 per table. The biggest disappointment for us is that we were given tea bags, which in my opinion is not appropriate for an experience of afternoon tea and really cheapened the experience. As an avid tea drinker, I personally was expecting at least loose tea. We were given one hot tea pot for the table and had to constantly ask for refills until towards the end when the server gave us a second pot. It was a bit dangerous for us trying to pass one kettle around the table of four people as well. They also don't give you any iced water to drink on the side which was disappointing. In addition, no one came to clean out or change out your tea cup when you were moving on to drink the next tea. So I ended having a taste of earl grey in the chamomile tea. For the 3rd tea, I ended up dumping some of it out on my plate and wiping with my napkin. Eek! We did however, enjoy the food. They present you with a 3 tiered tray with a variety of finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries and jam/butter. We all thought the finger sandwiches, scones and desserts were delicious. The sandwich were tasty, but a bit tiny and definitely needed more filling. Overall, I may come back for the food but I was disappointed in the use of tea bags and the inattentive service. read more

I made several inquiry calls and Bradley, the owner, kept telling me that the menu was not yet available even just a week before Valentine's day! I went for afternoon tea at, which is served on Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The service was gracious and the cakes and cookies were delicious. The tea, however, was from tea bags. It was a quality brand of tea but still a bit disappointing. The value for money was not really there in my opinion. I might check out the inn, though. They have rooms with fireplaces which sounds very cozy. I doubt I'd go back for the tea. I can buy a lot of cakes and tea for $45 somewhere else. read more

Came here for tea time as part of a group of four, and had a good experience. The atmosphere is super cute, as well as the teacups and setup. Each person gets a card that lists all of the teas, and each person can pick up to three teas. They bring you the tea bags, and a teapot full of hot water to share with the table. They come around occasionally to refill the hot water. The table gets a tray of food to share, and they gave us four of everything, so each person can have 1 of everything. There were 4 types of mini sandwiches, 2 big scones, and 3 types of desserts. I left full. We were there for 2 hours. Overall food was very good, teas were great, but service was a little slow. There were only 2 ladies who were doing everything (working the desk, waiting, bussing, etc), but it wasn't enough for all of the tables in my opinion. Stayed here last week for two nights. If you like historic B&Bs, you will love this place. It was built in the late 1700's and is loaded with character. It is very nicely appointed with period furniture and all areas have bookshelves with the host's books. The common areas are beautifully decorated and welcoming and the dining room is gorgeous with a full breakfast. Tea is served on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons with vintage teapots and teacups. I was sorry to have missed that! Our room was comfortable with all amenities. Overall a great experience. read more

Setup like an old house with beautiful woodworking and delicate art. The bathrooms are the only issue... There is one stall per gender. Considering showers are usually 40-50 women, there's a lot of waiting in line to use the bathroom. read more

The following is my mother's review: What used to be a local treasure and well known bed and breakfast has deteriorated. After years of positive experiences and memories there I arrived this time to find a house empty of any other clients and it soon became apparent why. Our room was so musty it activated my asthma and we had to leave. The owner did not pick up his cell when we tried to call for a room change. As we were leaving he did see us and came to us but did not offer any refund or any compensation. This was a horrible disappointment. We were used to a friendly welcome, a plate of fruit and cheese awaiting us in our room and a relaxing stay. What a beautiful building, and lovely tea on top of that! Have always wanted to sit down at a local tea room, and we finally made reservations for a Saturday morning. When the reservation was made, we were able to order which sandwiches and desserts we wanted. We dressed up (I mean, you don't HAVE to dress up, but it made things all the more fun), and we were all very eager to sit down and have tea and snacks! Staff was very polite and friendly, quickly showing us to our table and serving us. We were allowed to select what teas we wanted from a very large, beautiful tea box, and afterward the hot water was brought to our table. We probably only waited around 15 minutes for our finger sandwiches, scones, and desserts to arrive on a beautiful 3-tier tray. I can't really remember all that we had, but it included chicken salad, a cucumber/cream cheese finger sandwich, fruit tart, cheesecake, fudge, and some tasty scones. Overall, I would say we really liked 3/4 of the foods given to us, with the others simply seeming rather bland in comparison. Despite this, it certainly didn't ruin our meal and we enjoyed the experience so much that we're already planning on doing it again very soon. After tea, we made our way to the gift shop and were able to buy some of the tea they offered at our table (score!). We also explored the Asa Ransom house a bit more, and I absolutely adore the place. It doubles as a B&B, and offers restaurant service as well - and on top of that, it's a beautiful historic building that offers so much historic value to Clarence. Growing up I came here for tea with my grandma! I finally got to bring my girlfriend here for two nights this past weekend. She got to see more of WNY finally! This has been somewhere i've wanted to visit with her for the longest time and i'm so happy it exceeded expectations! Bob helped me surprise her by letting me bring in her present early so she didn't suspect us going anywhere new! We both felt safe the entire time, everyone was wearing masks when indoors (and properly!) Bob is so wonderful and we both enjoyed talking with him! He's so helpful and clearly loves what he does! Three of us went for holiday meal and it was busy, so busy it took 35 minutes to get asked if we wanted water. We ordered a typical holiday meal, was not very good and we politely told the wait staff with an oh well kind of attitude. Never will return, very costly and so so meal BUT the place is lovely to look at. I think going for lunch when not during a holiday might be better for anyone that loves beautiful homes with history. read more

First of all, I apologize to my other guests for bringing my very whiny toddler (ma bad!). The dining area is beautifully decorated and has the potential to be a sweetly intimate atmospheres. Unfortunately, its one small room so all diners are at the mercy of everyone there. While my toddler didn't make too much of a fuss I felt this is not a place to bring small children or loud friends. We loved the bread service because of the homemade butters. As for the food I can't give a very accurate review for the food. I have been putting off writing this review because I wanted the words to be as perfect as our experience. But seeing as how it has been almost a year here is my valiant attempt. Asa Ransom house is beyond extraordinary. We booked their all inclusive package months in advance and waited anxiously for our reservation date. We chose this place for our 6th anniversary. Being a same sex couple we are often greeted with less than enthusiastic staff who often make us feel less than. Bed and Breakfast locations more often than not are unfriendly so I emailed them in advance to ask if we would be welcome. I received the most sincere wonderful email explaining how we would be most welcome. When we arrived we were greeted with huge smiles and the whole staff treated us with respect and dignity the whole weekend. I reserved one of their pet friendly rooms so we could bring our "baby". In addition to the indoor entrance that led into an open gallery there was also an outdoor access that made it easy to take the pup out. After check in we were allowed to explore the grounds and the other rooms. They leave any unused rooms open so you can see the lovely decorations and room offerings. They were decorated for an old fashioned Christmas that added to the ambiance. When we got to our room we were greeted with bottled water and a fruit/cracker tray. It was a nice touch. At our dinner reservation time we headed to their in house restaurant. They are open to the public for the evening so there were some other guests but it was an intimate cozy space. As the food was included in our package all we had to do was make our choice from the menu. There were more choices than I expected from such a small place. Every bite of everything was divine. We were so full after dinner that we picked our desserts and the server made up a tray with tea and had it all sent to our room. After dinner we enjoyed the parlor with its large Christmas tree and fireplace. There is a small library of books and movies you can take back to your room to enjoy. There were also games and a puzzle if you wanted to linger in the parlor. We nestled all snug in our bed and it was one of the best sleeps I have ever had in a B&B. We went down for breakfast and were greeted with a coffee/juice station at the front door and helped ourselves. They are not open to the public for breakfast so it was just us and the one other overnight couple. They had set up the same table we had for dinner and we enjoyed a simple yet elegant breakfast. Check out was a breeze but we never felt rushed to leave. If you are looking for an intimate get away weekend Asa Ransom house will forever be on the top of my recommendation list. read more

Asa Ransom House has held the top spot in my food-loving heart, since 1995. Countless special friend and family moments were entrusted in their restaurant's gloved hands, simply because everything is done properly. The inn has ten rooms, nine of which have cozy fireplaces. All of which have the feel that you are staying in a most hospitable home, with local antique furniture and mementos, stocked bookshelves, a complimentary fruit and cheese plate to greet you when you arrive and a package of cookies for your departure. The bathrooms are spacious and stocked with everything from staple toiletries to bath salts and a signature makeup removing cloth. I haven't really seen that in B&Bs lately. As I said though, ARH takes care of you properly. I enjoyed that the Pine Room had a private porch to look out to the changing leaves and the resident Golden Retriever taking his walk in the morning. Be sure to check out their English Garden, where I know they used to grow salad vegetables, but it was hard to tell if they still do this during the Fall season. Breakfast is included with your stay, and you are presented with a menu of around seven options, as well as unlimited coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juice. Along with your beverage of choice, comes a basket of scones, toast and muffins and a Danish plate. Dinner here in the wintertime is my all-time favorite. Men wear jackets and women wear dresses and pantsuits. It's a formal service, but completely cozy at the same time. Be sure to try their fresh bread options, three flavors of butter (usually unsalted, strawberry, and cinnamon) and homemade soups and salad dressings. I like to order their traditional Shepherd's pie and a mug of hot cider. Then I swirl my cinnamon stick in the cider and stare out the window to the falling snow. They have a fire place that crackles...I really don't know how they manage this scene, but it happens every time we go in the winter. It's perfect. Your leftovers come back to you in a tinfoil swan. The Asa Ransom House is an excellent bed and breakfast...it's historic with quality design, service, and food. The main living room very cozy and welcoming, with just the right amount of class. The eggs perfectly done, the fried walleye was delicious with a crème sauce. The owners made some special spaghettis for the kids which was really nice of them. A warm fire greeted us in the room that had a mini fridge, and a 19th century sofa that was ready for use. Really like the coffee/snack nook for early risers too which was accessible but hidden from most views. Owner had some good suggestions in Buffalo for us too. My husband and I came here for the long weekend after our wedding as being a teacher I don't get a lot of vacation time and we are going on our "real" honeymoon soon and we had an absolutely great time. The Asa Ransom House was exactly what we were looking for in terms of a quiet, relaxing, quaint place for us to spend a little alone time after the wedding. I'm not a person who seeks the Victorian look that the place had, but it was very nice inside. We especially liked exploring the grounds around the place as they had a little pond and some seating areas. The best part was definitely the breakfast! My husband got the bacon and cheese souffle which was delicious. I got the apple crepes which I had enjoyed as well, but on future visits I would definitely get the souffle as well. I really enjoyed the multiple course breakfast as well. They selection of pastries, fresh fruit, hot chocolate, coffee and juice was perfect. read more

This is a quaint restaurant with high quality food in a historic house. It doubles as a B&B. My 97y/o mom wanted to go to dinner here. Great choice. The ambiance is old Americana in a semi-casual atmosphere. Not very large dining room makes for a fairly intimate occasion. The wait staff are very attentive though not very knowledgeable about wines. Soups and entrees are truly sumptuous. The Roasted Beet salad was a great starter and the Duck Breast was perfectly prepared medium rare. I heard good things about both the Norwegian Salmon and the Sauerbraten. New York State wines are featured - a good idea, but not nearly enough diversity. All in all a fine experience. Well worth the drive. read more

This place is so beautiful, large and super nice. The wife and I stayed here one evening on our way back home from a vacation up to New York and we were amazed at how simply awesome this place was. Our room was spacious and immaculate clean with fresh cheese and fruit laid out for us. Our breakfast was really great as well. They serve you from a menu so that is nice, you are waited on as if you are in a restaurant (well you sort of are in their restaurant but it is not open in the a.m. so it's just guests). This place is really quiet at night too and the beds are super comfortable. My wife and I walked the grounds a bit and the entire area is beautiful, especially in the fall. The only reason this place doesn't get a five star from me is that it struck my wife and I as more of an inn than a bed & breakfast. You check in at a desk rather than with a regular person who converses with you and shows you to your room. There is also no type of conversation or round table discussion at breakfast either as you are seated at a private table. Now some folks may like that and we did enjoy it too but it is not a typical B&B experience. The wife and I would love to come back here at Christmas time as I'm sure this entire place is decked out from head to toe with lights and awesome decoration and of course you know this area will likely have some holiday snow as well. I just had my 5th stay at the Asa Ransom House in Clarence, NY. The historic inn was built in 1799. It is now under new ownership/management as the previous owner retired and sold the inn. It is in good hands. The present owner is also a chef. Our breakfasts were delicious and nutritious both days, and served in a timely manner in a lovely dining room. Our room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and quiet despite facing the street. It had a lovely front porch, and was conveniently located near the electric vehicle charging station (a bonus!). The inn is in beautiful condition, and has lovely gardens. If you like historic inns that have been updated to have modern comfort and conveniences, this is the place for you. You can easily walk to a number of good restaurants nearby, and the inn itself serves dinner on Friday and Saturday during the summer season. read more

My wife was part of a group of ladies who came for a afternoon tea on 3/4/23. When the reservation was made the staff was made aware of my wife's Celiac disease. The staff said there would be an charge for the gluten free food. She was ok with it as it is more expensive to buy. What she was not happy with is that the extra five dollars included burned inedible scones and they did not take the time or make the effort to get the bread they said they would have for her gluten free sandwiches. Basically she paid $40 dollar for tea and some flavorless fruit. We won't be back. Oh and they auto gratuity on a part of 5. Most places don't start that practice until at least 8 people. read more

This is a very hard reviewed to write. This place is history, beautiful and very cute. However, the food is awful. Small portions, two drinks each, $210 with tip. This is old fashion, bring to your table food with the plastic top over the dish to keep it hot. This could be the most romantic place in town for a date. It is not. It reminds me of places my grandparents took me to as a kid. On a Saturday night, we were one of three tables, out of maybe twenty. The possibilities here are endless, goldmine in the making. For the cost, it should be one of the best places in town. For the same cost we could eat at Russels, Chop House and others. What happened to the Popovers? read more

It's difficult to believe that a place at which I had such an absolutely wonderful experience for dinner could be so disappointing for an afternoon tea. I mean, honestly.... tea is tea served with finger sandwiches and scones and pastries. How can that be anything but wonderful? Well.... this one certainly left much to be desired. Sure.... the setting is just as lovely, but the service was not nearly as friendly. And, that which was served was certainly not up to par (and, I've enjoyed high tea in many, many places..... Niagara-on-the-Lake, New York, Quebec, India, and London (to name a few). A case of tea bags was on the table upon our arrival.... not loose teas, but bags. The assortment was plentiful. One pot of hot water was brought to the table for two of us to share. When I asked about that since we did not both want the same variety of tea I was told we could each put our bag in our tea cup and then pour. I had to ask for separate pots so we could steep. The assortment of finger sandwiches (2 each of 3 varieties for 2 of us) were nothing special: open faced cucumber, tuna salad, and turkey with cranberry mayo. They were small, the bread was a bit stale, and the fillings a bit dry... as if they had all been made ahead of time and then sat on a tray in the fridge waiting to be plopped on to the serving platter. Same for the desserts.... 2 types of scones (one sweet and one savory), a lemon bar, a piece of cheesecake, a fruit tart, and some chocolaty cake.... all tiny and nothing particularly standing out as wonderful. Were they the left-overs from a dinner or baked especially for tea? And, where were the cookies and fruit? The jam? Sugary jelly. The Devonshire cream? Tasted more like slightly sweetened sour cream. And, no refills on food or tea. Lovely setting and lovely china to be sure. But very disappointing in every other way! read more

I have been frequenting Asa Ransom House on and off for over twenty years. The history and old world charm keep bringing me back...yet every time I give this place "one more chance", I continue to be disappointed. Recently, and with the help of owner Robert Lenz, I finally decided to never return again. Mr. Lenz has got to be the rudest and most crude inn keeper around. He has single-handedly ruined my dining experience on more than one occasion. What is his problem and why is he so offensive? Years ago he told my luncheon party to hurry up and eat...."we have your table booked again." Even if that is the case, you DO NOT reiterate such verbiage to guests. I stayed away for more than 10+ years. Of late, we decided to order take-out. Both times Mr. Lenz has answered the phone, only to totally annihilate our order, while dishing out sarcastic remarks. When asked if rolls accompanied dinners...he snapped "what do you want for 25 bucks?". Really Mr. Lenz? As of now I want nothing more from you and never will. Prices at Asa Ransom aren't cheap, with food and service often falling short. Yet, I personally would tolerate the inflated costs and small portions, if not accompanied by the owner's utter discourtesy. Bob Lenz may have a knack for business, as evidenced by many years of operation. However, and I say this with the utmost honesty, Asa Ransom might want to lock Bob in his office...and leave personable staff to service patrons. read more

My husband and I were here 6/2 for a quiet anniversary dinner. Like walking back in time! Very calm,quiet and quaint. Service was wonderful and at a perfect pace for savoring your meal and conversation. Wine list contained many New York State vineyards which is nice to see. I had a chefs special combo platter with half rack of lamb and salmon casino, came with choice of potatoes,vegetable ,salad or soup. Everything was perfect!My husband had filet stuffed with cheese and spinach- done to perfection and so tender. Rolls and muffins, fresh baked with choice of three spreads, melted in your mouth! I recently had my daughter's wedding shower at Asa Ransom House and I cannot say enough good things about it!! The room for the shower was so lovely, as were the table settings with all of the antique cups and saucers. They served us a tea party and it was wonderful!!! There were so many choices of tea, the food was delicious and the service was impeccable!!! It was very easy to work with Bradley the owner and I felt the price per person was reasonable.
