We were craving some ice cream after walking around town for a bit. We just walked in, did not really know what to expect. Line was really short so we decided to give it a try. Friendly staff greeted us as we walked up to the glass displays. We were offered a few samples before making our choices. The place is very low key. , nothing fancy. Disappointed we chose this ice cream shop when we were in Estes Park. The shop is convenient, however very small and hard to navigate with a stroller if you have one. The chunks of graham crackers and sweet blueberries were generously mixed into their homemade creamy ice cream recipe. The associate told us that the ice creams are made in-house daily and nothing gets shipped in other than the ingredients. These guys also offer other treats like cookies, sundaes, milkshakes, and candied apples. Although I was disappointed at the early closing times of all the shops, we were able to make it to Hayley's twice during our stay. We opted for Hayley's because it had the highest reviews on Yelp. It reminded me of the ice cream shop we went to when on vacation in Acadia NP in Maine. Although they have a variety of flavors (a plus), the ice cream is average. I got a few different flavors each time and both times, I felt like it was something I could have purchased at the local grocery store. Nothing to write home about. The staff is friendly and will load up your cones to the extreme! So both cones I got were massive-- and as an ice cream enthusiast, I had no problem scarfing both down. Hayley's was decidedly the top ice cream parlour in Estes Park, per Yelp, so I popped in. The line was long, and I liked that it was all about the ice cream, with only a few other options, like cotton candy. I sampled a couple flavors, and copied the other masked visitors ahead of me, who ordered the strawberry guava sorbet. Yep! They had great taste, and - though I wouldn't normally have landed on a sorbet, as I'm usually a mint chocolate chip/chocolate person - it was definitely the best choice, especially for such a hot day. Estes Park is to ice cream shops what Boston is to boorish individuals with comical accents that replace the "/r/" phoneme with "[]" or another neutral central vowel. Ice cream shops are ubiquitous in the quaint little mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado, but who am I to complain? I'm a sucker for a heaping bowl of rich, creamy homemade ice cream, so the more shops the merrier. I've visited every ice cream shop in town, but I return to Hayley's for one reason alone: the spicy, decadent Mexican chocolate milkshake. The ingredients are undoubtedly very simple (whole milk, sugar, cocoa powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cayenne powder), yielding a thick, rich shake with nothing artificial. I suspect that Hayley's ice cream is free of carrageenan (a potentially toxic seaweed derivative used as a thickening agent in most commercial ice creams), because I never feel bloated afterwards. In fact, I could probably gulp down at least two more shakes, so I can only conclude that Hayley's incorporates "The Stuff," a highly addictive (yet delicious) ice cream-like substance of extraterrestrial origin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UPDzJ3XVhg) Whenever I order the Mexican chocolate shake, the employees caution me that "some folks think it's too spicy." I've been a proud "pepper head" my entire life, so I cannot empathize with pansies...er...individuals sensitive to capsaicin. The shake does indeed pack a punch, but the sting is offset by casein, a compound found in dairy that binds with capsaicin and cools the palate. That interplay between spicy and cool is what brings me back for more. I've sampled Mexican chocolate elsewhere, but few places are bold enough to include such a large amount of cayenne. I live in San Antonio, Texas, arguably the Tex-Mex capital of the world, yet I must travel to the Colorado Rockies to get my heat fix. If you find yourself craving some good, old-fashioned homemade ice cream in Estes Park, then skip the Dairy Queen in the center of town and make a beeline for Hayley's on Elkhorn Drive. I've yet to sample anything other than the Mexican chocolate shake, but I'm confident that the other flavors (even the boring ones for heat-sensitive girly men) are every bit as delicious.
