Chain sports bar and restaurant with great service and lots of open space for groups and various games, mainly pool and darts. The drink specials will always make your visit worth your while, and the food menu is relatively large, offering a wide variety. However, the price point is generally higher than most local bars, and the food doesn't particularly impress. The truth is, there are too many exceptional local bars and restaurants to justify making Haymaker a primary food and drink destination. Personally, I go for the pool tables and incidentally have a few drinks along the way. Servers have recommended the ham and cheese sandwich and the Cuban burger, both of which failed to impress me. Overall, I'd say grab a beer and hang out, but eat dinner elsewhere. 3/5 read more

Yeah, I really don't know. No, that is not how I feel about Haymaker. I KNOW how I feel about Haymaker! "Yeah, I really don't know" was the response we got from our waitress for EVERY SINGLE QUESTION we asked her. Not kidding! Every. Single. Question. So we meet up with some fellow Yelpers before the show at Broadway in Austin. We got there about 7:05 and it is right down the street, so plenty of time, right? WRONG! The waitress appeared quickly enough the first time, but when we said we needed a minute she walked away......for 10 mins. I could see the waitresses gathering around in the corner, sipping soda and talking, but not actually waiting on anyone. We were able to flag her down, and since one of our dining companions said they had Texas Liquor for $3, my roommate asked the waitress what Texas liquor they had. "Yeah, I really don't know." so we kicked around some names, finally she went to the bar and asked. While she was gone, our friend stated he had asked her earlier about the Wolves on the bar and on their shirts. Her response: "Yeah, I really don't know." The roomie asked her if he could get a double pour on the rocks. Yeah, I really don't know. After we (slowly) received our drinks (he got a single) and realized that it was now 7:25 we asked how long it would take if we ordered a sandwich. You can guess the response. So we order a sandwich to split while our companions left for the show. The roomie made a trip to the bathroom and our sandwich came. I cut off a 1/4 and was eating it when he came back. He picked up his portion and asked if the meat on an italian beef sandwich was supposed to be cold. Nope, it should have been hot. He had to go to the bar and request a mnager as Miss Yeah-I-Really_don't_know was no where to be found. We sent the food away and just got our check (which she was quick to pick up). Walked in on opening night and the place was SLAMMED. Given those two facts you would think there would be glitches, but there weren't. Service was great, was greeted several times while waiting for a table. Once seated some one promptly took our order and with lightening fast speed our appetizer was on the table. Get the traditional poutine, it was awesome. In the perfect amount of time our entrees came, and like the poutine, they were superb. Went to Haymaker to watch the USA game but what a fail! It seemed that if they were going to sponsor such a large sporting event that they would plan better. I'm from out of town and was excited to check this place out. We were denied entry when there was clearly space inside the fence. My party missed the first half driving to downtown to find an alternative bar for the game. I WILL NEVER go back to the Haymaker. I wish the owners would take responsibility for owning this bar, or at least train staff to make it a friendly "neighborhood bar" and not some fly-by east side bar for random people to congregate and be total a$$holes when there is a sports game on. The longer complaint is broken into three: 1) Overpriced sub-par food, 2) Cultivates a gross environment 3)Not great for ladies. 2 & 3 blend. 1. Like others I was super excited about this place opening (craft sandwiches!). But the sandwiches they serve are more "extreme" and heavy--on a "hey can you handle THIS?!?!"l--side than they are craft sandwiches. 2. The first time I went the service was cold and mechanical like an airport so I thought, 'they are just finding their legs.' But the 3rd time this happened I had to write this place off. AND THIS ISN'T DURING A MAJOR EVENT LIKE THE WORLD CUP. There are also 9 or 10 tvs showing ANY AND ALL sports games, loudly. If you go outside to talk be prepared to inhale second hand smoke and have the servers ignore you even more. 3. Long time patron ... Sadly,I'll never be back. I am a long time fan of this east side establishment and long time member of the Austin local casual dining scene. I use to frequent Haymaker for its electric atmosphere and gracious hosting of the US National Team support group the American Outlawz, but for the most recent Copa America match and individual claiming he was the owner verbally and physically accosted me for his perceived idea that I was blocking his pathway and that I was undermining him in front of other customers. I was completely taken aback by this as we have had positive interactions over the 3 years they have been in operation with never less than a jovial word. On this day he repeatedly grabbed me by the shoulders and evoked his inner HS bully. After shouting at me to " keep talking..." when I defended that I was not purposely blocking any pathway, he asked me to come outside where he could fain a grandiose apology in front of guests. I explained to him that there was never an acceptable situation where he should be grabbing, touching or pulling a customer who is compliant. In terror of the handling of this completely fabricated situation I requested my tab and departed. I hesitate to mention this because ignorance is often perceived as racism but I was one of 3-5 visible African American patrons in the bustling bar. He targeted another black gentlemen standing near me because he thought we were together and began mocking him. I didn't say as much as a word to that man as he was not in my party. Having served int the USMC for 8 years I have traveled all over the world, and never have I been treated this poorly. I'll tell everyone I know this is not the place they want to be... EVER. Sat a few minutes, sat another few minutes...dude walks in and one of the two waitresses standing nearby grab a menu immediately and ask him for his drink order. I came here with my boyfriend & sister after retreating from the rain post-craft brewers festival. We were hungry & a little wet so we sat outside on the patio. The inside is a bit dark with a large bar. Since it was a Saturday afternoon the whole place was very crowded and seat yourself. After we fought our way to a picnic table, our server was slow and over busy. I ordered the beer margarita (which was on special). It wasn't anything memorable (Cuatro's has the best beer marg!) but it was fine. They have tons of local beers on tap so I'd stick with that over a cocktail next time. For food we ordered some pretzel bites and beer cheese. Both of these things sound amazing & they would have been if we'd been at Easy Tiger but alas... the pretzel bites were overcooked (fried I think?) & flavorless and the beer cheese was grossly oozy and salty. We should have known not to order the beer cheese when the people next to us had left almost their entire bowl uneaten. For my main meal I ordered the caprese sandwich which was supposed to be like a grilled cheese with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil but it came out cold so I had to ask them to heat it up for me. There's really nothing sadder than a cold grilled cheese. The highlight of the meal for me was the jalapeno ranch dressing that came on my salad. It was spicy and amazing. But you don't really go to a place for salad dressing so I don't think I'll be rushing back to Haymaker any time soon- at least not to eat! As Haymaker was rolling toward its open, it seemed we would get a very cool, spacious bar with interesting food and a warehouse, woodsy, modern retro feel marked by vintage photos of working people. Instead we have a deafening sports bar with more screens than Best Buy. If this were Star Trek, I would beam Haymaker over to West Campus across from Pluckers and reclaim the laid-back, progressive, Manor Road potential of this site. read more

I'm giving 3 stars because 2.5 isn't an options. Haymaker isn't bad, it's just not good, interesting or memorable. The food and atmosphere are both entirely bland and mediocre. My boyfriend described it best when he called it "indie Chili's." We were eagerly anticipating Haymaker's opening since it's right in our hood and after years of eating at Mi Madre's we were ready for some new options.... unfortunately, Haymaker didn't live up to our expectations: DECOR- Grey walls, long tables/benches in the style of Bangers. The design is inoffensive and has no personality. It's infinitely replicable for when they inevitably franchise this place (seriously, it has Generic Franchise oozing from every corner). BEER- This is where Haymaker really stood out. They have TONS of beer on tap, local and international. And their beer prices are entirely reasonable. The cocktail menu looked great too although I stuck to beer while I was there. They have great happy hour specials every day - everything from $2 margaritas to $2 Mexi-Cans (canned Mexican beers) FOOD- Man... I love sandwiches. But this place needs to up the ante if they want to stand out in a city with so many amazing sandwich/burger places. No bread options, you get what they have which is white loaf bread. I don't know if this was local or not, but I'm not a white bread kinda gal. Also if they have any gluten-free options, none were mentioned to me by our server. I had the margarita (mozzarella, tomato, pesto) which was tasty alongside some sweet potato waffle fries which were the star of the evening. The dude had the Oregoner which was really tasty. I would argue that they're a wee skimpy on fillings, but that's just 1 woman's opinion. You know what was a total bummer? Pretzel bites. Incredibly hard (like, break your teeth hard) and flavorless - get some salt on those babies! And pretzels are so soft and chewy and fluffy and these were gummy. No no no. Plus the mustard was nicht so gut and they charge you for more - lame, guys. It's like a tablespoon of mustard, c'mon. WAITSTAFF- You're new and everyone is still learning everything and I understand that. But your waitstaff needs to be very conversant in menu items and drinks. Our waitress, who was the sweetest most timid little thing ever, had to go find answers to questions at least 3 different times, it doesn't instill much confidence. Seems like it's a great place to watch sports, drink beer, play pool, or just hang out with friends. If you're looking for a great meal though, I'd skip Haymaker. read more

I'll come back for a beer, and only a beer. Was so excited when I saw they were open, but my high hopes were quickly dashed. My margarita tasted like Gatorade. I have high expectations for margs in Austin, and expect REAL LIME JUICE in my drink. Oh well, at least I got some electrolytes. The food was so bad. I ordered a side salad, which was small, but ok I guess. Pickled eggs were fine. My sandwich, which cost 10$ with no sides. . the "Croque Monsiuer" was just plain awful. Plain bread burned on one side, lacked mustard, store bought chopped up ham, and their "signature gruyere sauce", which tasted and looked suspiciously like velveeta. Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. That meal left a bad taste in my mouth (both metaphorically and literally). If you want to succeed, then your high menu prices need to equal quality food. Period. sidenote, put some prices on your beer menu! pet-peeve! Haymaker seems to serve up what can be best described as drunk food you'd make at home. Everything seems to have a lot of bread and a lot of salt and with no presentation (look at the user submitted pics) and for a not super friendly price. Literally every item was a version of sh*t on a shingle... things piled on top of some bread. I was most excited about having access to Poutine on a more regular basis but everything in the dish was oversalted and they don't use the right kind of curds. Poutine curds should not melt completely when in touch with hot gravy, but still retain their general shape and hopefully the squeak as well. Their poutine cheese melted completely into the gravy and turned into a wet salty mess. (I was also disappointed to see they don't offer fried cheese curds like at Black Sheep. Their curds are great for frying.) I don't know that I'd return to Haymaker on my own. read more

It is what it is, Black Sheep on the east side. At least they have new menu items though as I am so bored with Black Sheep's never changing menu. The food is sub par and over priced. We had the Italian beef sandwich and the grilled chicken with Brie and balsamic sandwich. I am from NJ, when the bread is off, it's off. If you're going to have dry overwhelming bread, toast that shit. The Texas draught beer special was good but paying $10 for week a sandwich and two fries, no thanks! Well-funded; formulaic; sports bar; plenty of TVs and a pool table; typical sports bar food; business park-esque; reminiscent of a Buffalo Wild Wings, but with a better beer selection. Would be shocked if it's 100 percent locally-owned. Does not fit in with the neighborhood which signals a decline for Cherrywood/Blackland, in my opinion. I've lived two blocks from Haymaker for several years before it opened and I'm hoping there's only room for one Haymaker in the area. I will visit again to watch sports and drink beer. There's not really a motivation other than that to come back for me. Waiting for the UT frat alums to take it over. **Update: Oct. 10, 2013** Okay, I've given Haymaker three chances and even took the teenage boys with ravenous appetites there for dinner today. Big fail. Huge. $10 open face namesake sandwich went basically uneaten and the 13-year-old even had them make a simple custom burger with basic ingredients. That too went half-eaten. I'm going to have to make the older son dinner at home because their namesake pile of crap is now in a *styrofoam* box in my fridge (who uses styrofoam anymore??). Lesson: Don't eat at Haymaker. Food really sucks. Want to watch a game and have a beer and live in the neighborhood? It's a decent place to go, but the menu is a total failure. I was a big fan of Haymakers after visiting for the first time this past Friday evening, so friends and I decided to go back today (Tuesday evening). We are ordering drinks and having a good time until we are informed that the bartender refused to make my friends drink (basic mojito). It wasn't because they didn't have the ingredients but apparently the bartender just refused to make one. I frequent bars and restaurants weekly and have never had an Austin bartender refuse to make a paying customer a drink like that. Not good for a new restaurant/bar. Wow - big mistake. coming in from a weekend away and needed a quick lunch on the east side. Haymaker - Yelp ratings of 3.5. My rating of 2 is generous - weak service, subpar mozzarella, tomato and basil pesto sandwich, soggy fried pickles. Our mistake - the sign on the bldg said sandwiches but it's not a sandwich place; it's a bar that serves bar food including sandwiches. This place is great! There is plenty of space, a great selection of brews on tap, and fun things to do while you are drinking (pool, darts, outdoor games). There is a good sized parking lot, bike racks and outdoor misters. I've only tried one menu item so far, the Italian Beef sandwich, and it was very tasty! Let me start this review by saying that the only reason I am giving Haymaker two stars instead of one is because of the expansive draft beer selection. Compared to other bars in Austin, Haymaker offers a decent beer menu--so it didn't disappoint in that regard. While I showed up starving and had a hard time deciding what to order (it all sounded so good!), my dinner was extremely underwhelming. My boyfriend ordered the Horseshoe and I the Louisville Slugger (both of which are served open-faced) and the presentation was horrible. Picture two soggy pieces of bread smothered in what tasted like Velvetta cheese. We were told the Horseshoe was "served with fries on top" which sounds like they would be piled high, but no--the burger is literally topped with five fries total. I hate to curse in Yelp reviews, but it literally looked like someone threw shit on a plate and decided to serve it. (But hey, I took half of mine home and the dogs sure enjoyed it!) While I get Haymaker is sorting out its "kinks," our server was extremely slow and messed up my boyfriend's order. On top of that, someone decided it was a good idea to continue renovations at 8 pm and was shoveling gravel approximately two feet from our table. Couldn't that wait until tomorrow morning??? Haymaker is decent as a bar -- but do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere. read more

Food is okay, a lot of it is really greasy. The service is HORRIBLE - inattentive, the servers are more into chatting among themselves and unhelpful when asking for our order or drinks. I had to get there attention twice to ask for drinks after taking our food order. It rubs me the wrong way when they act like they want nothing to do with you, yet expect a great tip at the end. I have been looking forward to going and finally today came! Waitress was apologetic about the wait due to shift change. No big deal. She brought our drinks and I ordered then excused myself. There was a waitress who followed after me to ladies room. As I was washing my hands she just walked on by... sign clearly states employees have to wash their hands... it's common sense. I met some friends here on Sunday 9/29 for birthday drinks for a buddy. The appetizers we had were good but the main draw for us was the huge beer list. We are beer drinkers and not the sex in a canoe type. We take Brewcations and know our stuff. Their draft system is broke. Most of our beers were flat. They need to get a professional in there to fix it. They are wasting and ruining good beer. It is tragic. I hope it is a one time thing and is fixed soon but for not one employee to notice several flat beer in a single round makes me cautious to return. We tried their GRUYERE DIP AND CHIPS and let me tell you, after this we just ordered burgers with the gruyere cheese all over. Definitely great pick!! Great space, good service, the food's not shabby, and decent drinks - you should stop here! IMO, the best thing about Haymaker's is the great space (and maybe the poutine). No, really - the space is great for meeting with a group of friends and having a few drinks. It can get quite loud inside but there is ample outdoor seating even on a weekend night. Kind of eclectic food offerings, but everything we had was quite edible, so I can live with eclectic! Between our table, we had three varieties of fancy grilled cheese sandwiches, a burger, a vegan wurst of some kind, a Chicago style beef, poutine, and beer cheese. Suffice it to say this is a cheese heavy establishment (which is a-ok, in my book.) The poutine was deliciously salty and we could have eaten a wheelbarrow full. The beer cheese is the only thing we all said "meh" too - really underwhelming. Skip it and get more poutine! While the Chicago beef wasn't very close to authentic, it did try, and it was still tasty, so Haymaker gets points for effort. No one left hungry! Service was quick and attentive, even though the place was swarmed. My only gripe, and it's a minor one, is that the Friday night $2 frozen margaritas are painfully small. 4 ounces maybe? I'd kinda rather you just charge me $4 and bring a real one so I don't look like a wino when I end up with a dozen margaritas on my tab. Or maybe I am a wino. We have drove past this place a couple of times and it always looked liked fun. We finally gave it a shot on Sunday for drinks and dinner. The food was ok very salty and greasy which I personally am not a fan of. I had a white wine sangria which was pretty delish. My biggest issue is there service. We had sat down and were told someone would be right with us. We waited and finally my husband decided to go get us some drinks since it seemed like no one was going to take our order. He goes up to the bar and starts to order and the bartender tells him they can't serve him. Didn't ask for ID, didnt ask really any questions to my husband just straight denied him. Now I know TABC rules and yes you do have the right to refuse service to anyone but if you want customers to come back you ask them "have you had anything else to drink" "can I see your ID" anything would have been better then nothing. Anyways my husband comes back to the table waitress finally shows up and takes our drink order. She then proceeds to look at my husband and ask him if he had been anywhere else tonight. This question confused all of us. She then went to explain the bartender told her they refused to serve my husband at the bar. Since he was finally asked I told the waitress my husband had been born with a cleft lip and palette and had a speech impediment because of 20+ surgeries. If the original bartender had asked questions I wouldn't be so upset. It's very frustrating to be denied service because of something my husband has no control over. My wife and I were delivered drinks by our server, after which he proceeded to stand over to the side and talk with other servers. It took me waving him down after an awkwardly long time to get him to come back. He tried to play it off with the strange statement "sorry, when we're slow we just get to talking." I wont be back. I will tell you why. I arrived early around 6:45ish, was meeting my sister at 7:15 for some dinner, catching up and well, why the heck not try a new place! I sat down, "Mindy" introduced herself as my server for the evening and then left. (She did not ask if I wanted a drink or anything to start with) Mind you, I did say I was waiting on one but still - its freaking hot out! Water?? Anyway, 10 minutes or so passed and still Mindy had not come to ask if I wanted anything. Catching her attention was close to impossible. I should say that she had maybe 4 tables in total at that point and I was right smack in front of the door she came through each time. Glancing my way was inevitable - but not for Miiinnndyyyy. Finally, I was able to get her attention and asked for water. It came promptly. My sister arrived at 7:20. It took 10 minutes for Mindy to come ask her what she wanted to drink and take our order. Then another 20 for the drink to actually arrive. We ordered the Traditional Poutine & the Patty Melt with a black bean patty instead of meat and no cheese. By 8:38 - our food was still not there, we kept trying to get Mindy's attention but we might as well have been invisible. She came to our table after making many ridiculous gestures to get her attention and said "Oh, your food isn't here, let me see what happen to it". She returned 3 minutes later - - hold on, I hope you realize that by now we have been waiting ONE HOUR for food, just saying. So she returned 3 minutes later and said, "Oh my gosh, its totally my fault, I didn't put the order in, I went ahead and put it in 'on the fly', it will be right out. And ill go ahead and pay for your Poutine" .....ok, seriously?? Lets break that down: 1 - Its been ONE HOUR - we obviously came to a restaurant to eat, so bring us some food while we wait SOME MORE. Anything- hummus, chips whatever. 2 - You are paying for our Poutine - why the hell aren't you paying for the whole damn thing? Moving on. Its now 8:54 - the 'free' Poutine arrives - its sucks. The gravy is way way too salty. Mindy comes by and actually says, "How is the Poutine? Worth the wait?" All I can come up with is "its okay" in response. 9:20 rolls around, still no Patty Melt. Note that its now been almost an hour since she said 'it would be right out'. I get her attention and ask her for the check. She says we should wait, to let her just go check on the food and she will bring it in a to go box with the check. As we are talking, the Patty Melt arrives. Wait for it, wait for it.... IT HAS CHEESE!!! You may recall that I ordered it without cheese and with a bean patty over an hour ago. So, she says, "here it is, ill be back with your check", I reply, "im sorry, but it has cheese and I asked for no cheese". (I didn't even check to see if it actually had a bean patty) Her only solution at this point was to not assume any responsibility, and finally, to actually make some attempt at recovery by not making us pay for anything (how effing generous). She proceeds to say how we must come back, and that this isn't a reflection of the restaurant or her. Then, as we are trying to just leave, she proceeds to try to clean the table blocking us from being able to get out of the freaking picnic table. We left hungry, pissed and utterly disappointed NOT with the fact that she made a mistake or forgot, but that she made no recovery what so ever to make us comfortable. I've worked in hotels and the service industry for 11 years - making your guests happy and comfortable is priority #1. This was my first visit to Haymaker and probably my last. I live in the neighborhood and was excited to try rap new place. My negative experience was due in large part to our horrible waitress. My friend asked if her sandwich came with fries, to which the waitress replied yes. When it arrived without fries, I said something and then we were brought a basket of fries which we were charged for. I think it's common practice to comp those sort of things when they were expected with the sandwich. Another complaint I had was that my IPA came in a 10oz glass, the same IPA I get all over town in a normal pint glass and pay less for at other places. All in all it was just a crumby experience and I wouldn't recommend the place. read more

we've always liked Black Sheep so we had high hopes for this place.. which I guess makes the disappointment even worse. the good: great beer selection lots of TVs GREAT location clean restrooms the bad: food.. we've eaten there 3x now. my wife has celiac disease so the only thing on the menu that she can eat is the salad which is consistently small and tastes like refrigerator. I've ordered the french dip kinda sandwich, one of the grilled cheese sandwiches and the mac & chz. the mac & chz was good, but the other 2 were awful. cheap ingredients poorly executed. drinks.. possibly the worst "margarita" I've ever had. seriously, there's no excuse for serving a bad margarita in this part of the world. my wife has gotten 2 or 3 other drinks off the menu which were all mediocre at best. - how about a mexican martini like Black Sheep has? service.. spotty at best. the servers behave like cocktail waitresses. in other words they seem to think everyone is there to drink and stick around for a few hours, so what's the hurry? there's no hurry I just expect someone to check up on the table every 10 minutes or so and make sure we don't need anything, all is well, etc.. they don't. they take your order then they show back up an hour later to collect your money. I gave it 2 stars only because it's a short walk from the house. if it wasn't I woulda given it 1 star and never went back. meh. read more

Haymaker does not know how to handle a crowd. Do not patronize them until they have learned to operate safely and responsibly. Instead of capping the number of entrants, they choose to admit an unsafe number of customers into the bar and then kicked ALL customers out of the bar after the fire marshal informed them they were over capacity. I arrived over 6 hours before kick off to ensure there would be room for me at a table. By halftime they declared they had failed to monitor capacity and that everyone needed to leave or they would be escorted away (arrested?) by the police on premises. It is not my responsibility to monitor how many people come into a bar after me. Haymakers needs to be responsible for complying with capacity and safety standards. If the bar is at capacity: stop letting people in, do not wait until you are on the verge of being shut down by the authorities to act. Choose somewhere else to watch the big game. read more
