My friends and I came here to watch the Paraguay vs. France knockout match. Driving here was incredibly easy because venue has an ample amount of parking space, so we didn't waste any game time hunting for a spot. Once inside, we were thrilled to find a great layout featuring a shaded open-air area as well as a powerful AC indoor area, which was an absolute lifesaver in this extreme Austin summer heat. We managed to score the perfect spot with highly comfortable seating and an excellent view of the screens. The draft beer selection was fantastic and served ice-cold, keeping our crew fully refreshed through a very high-stakes, stressful match. I remember seeing this establishment in East Austin and wondering where do I park? So when I spotted it on my daily South Lamar commute I was delighted. Stopped by one weeknight, and was pleasantly impressed. Plenty of complimentary parking in a huge parking area. Beautiful exterior with a whimsical patio. Indoor space is large, open, and enjoyable. I am conflicted. I went to Koko's for the first trivia since it became Koko's (used to be Baker Street Pub). The good: the pretzel was very yummy! The bratwurst wasn't bad either. It's great to be back in the space playing ATX City Trivia The bad: They completely changed the vibe of the place from a rustic, cozy place to very hotel-like with little character (which I find weird for a Bavarian style restaurant... all the restaurants in Bavaria look much more like what Baker St used to look like). My bratwurst took 1.5 hours to come out. After the waitress admitted that they gave it to someone else, it took another 30 minutes to get a new one. The director of operations apologized by saying they didn't expect such a large crowd, but it didn't feel like a fair reason to take almost 2 hours for a bratwurst. I was shocked when I saw my bill... which was charged 100% for the brat they failed to give me in any semblance of an adequate amount of time. I'm a huge sports fan and I'm always looking for new sports bars to watch games. I decided to check out Koko's Beer Hall to watch the Final Four games. And I definitely plan on returning. First of all, the place is spacious and has a ton of TVs. It's easy to watch multiple games at the same time which I love. Secondly, the food is good. It's a little pricey but I did like some of the dishes. I tried a bunch of their appetizers and my favorites were the Brisket & Smoked Sausage Cheddar Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños, Koko's Famous Giant Pretzel and Bacon Cheese Fries. They have decent options for beer, cocktails, wine and non-alcoholic drinks too. Third, the service was good. Lastly, I loved the atmosphere, especially for University of Texas games. It's always more fun to be around a crowd that is cheering for the same team as you. Overall, it was a good experience. read more

The Bavarian prince Konstantin Prinz von Bayern opened this beer hall located near the Broken Spoke. It is 7,000 feet on the inside and includes a patio with an extra 2,000 feet of space. Von Bayern formerly had a brick and mortar in east Austin that closed in 2023. He then switched business models, sold the business to Ticketmaster, and spread to sports arenas across America, including our very own Moody Center. You may have seen the food kiosk at a recent Spurs game, concert, or rodeo. The menu includes sausages, hot dogs, Belgian fries, chicken wings, Bavarian pretzels and lots of beer. They also have $$$ hamburgers, schnitzel, etc. like anything with Ticketmaster, the prices seem higher than they should be. That said, it's so nice to finally have a German option without driving to Fredericksburg or New Braunfels. (It's boldly across the street from Easy Tiger, which is perhaps Koko's only contender for the best Bavarian pretzel in South Austin.) Scholtz's beer garden is an old-skool option but parking is a true problem. We tried the frankfurter with Belgian fries; the curry sausage and fries; the sausage with sauerkraut; and the mozzarella cheese sticks. The food was really appreciated by the 11 year old. I'll try the pretzel next time, since it comes highly recommended. Oddly there are only two German beers on tap. The cocktails are milk toast. Local lore: This spot was the Chotchkes restaurant used for the "flair" scene with Jennifer Aniston in the Office Space movie, so I was curious to see the latest version of the former Baker Street Pub, which was the former Alligator Grill. As dark as Baker Street was, Koko's is light. There are about twenty giant televisions playing [hopefully] all the sports games you'd need. Everything is well lit and the place feels super clean with plenty of elbow room, which is a luxury these days in south central Austin. It would be an excellent place for a large group celebration (work or recreational-sports-team happy hour, for instance), or a really fun place to watch Austin FC games or the World Cup. The ambiance seems to be going for sports arena. You can almost imagine a crowd of people standing to watch the game, accidentally spilling their Belgian fries when a goal is scored. They still have the cozy patio with twinkle lights wrapped around the oak trees as an alternative for a more quiet and intimate date night. The staff is helpful, friendly, efficient and competent. Parking is available, since the lot is connected to the rest of the strip mall. read more

Stopped in after dinner on Christmas evening with our dog. I had really been looking forward to checking out this relatively new spot but it was underwhelming. It's a large room with lots of seating (tables & chairs, picnic tables, sofas, bar area, etc.). Think European food hall (sort of but not truly authentic) meets sports bar (huge screens with sports all around the perimeter) meets strip mall. Everything was clean but just lacking something. I was expecting charm & the feel of halls I've visited all over Europe. I think the holiday decor helped bring some warmth but without it would be like a warehouse shopping club vibe. That's the best way I can describe it. The outdoor patio built around trees was pretty nice though, especially with the holiday decor. We intended on staying inside and had been seated in the sofa area. However, after being there about five minutes, our server informed us that the manager said no dogs allowed. They didn't take the time to find out that we do in fact have service dog credentials. That's neither here nor there. Just pointing it out because it was sort of abrupt, they weren't busy at all (2-3 people at the bar), a family of 4 at one of the tables, and a guy also sitting in the sofa area. Rather than leave, we decided since the weather was so great (78 degrees) to sit outside. That was a better decision anyway because it was a beautiful night and the decorative lights just brought the holiday spirit. As we were heading to the patio, another couple was entering with their small dog, stopped by the same server, advising she was just yelled at by her manager about our dog. They too sat on the patio. I certainly hope she wasn't yelled at by the manager. There could have been more professionalism handling the dog situations. I'm not laying blame with the server at all. These interactions just gave the impression that the place isn't run very well. I wanted to try one of their regular frozen cocktails (not a holiday special) called the frozen Dr. Pepper but it wasn't available. Since we were at what is supposed to be a German beer hall, I opted for a Hefeweizen pour (don't remember the brewery) and it was tasty. However, full from our holiday dinner, I had just a few sips and didn't finish it. My boyfriend got an eggnog cocktail served "Christmas Vacation" style in a moose cup. He said it was tasty. While we were there I said I'd like to give them another try and maybe sample the food. But, I'm actually not sure I'd go out of my way to do so. We loved Koko's back when it was on the East Side, and we were bummed when it closed. So to know they reopened was exciting, and since they were on so many people's lists of great Christmas-themed bars over the holidays, we decided to check it out. We made a special trip just to go to their holiday Christmas movie bingo, but when we arrived about 10 minutes before the posted start time, we were the only ones there, and were told it would start at 6:15, not the 6pm time listed online. Our server came over and she didn't seem thrilled to be there, but the hostess was very kind, and the bingo hostess was also super fun....to begin with. Well 6:15 came and a group came in and sat behind us, and I overheard them saying they worked there, and we looked over and they clearly had printed out sheets of cheats for the bingo. The movie coincidentally started once they were finally settled. As some other tables came and left, those bingo cards were "slyly" slid onto their table by our sever who was clearly trying to hide them. They quietly got each bingo that won gift cards (convenient, I know...) and when we got the last, the bingo hostess was nowhere to be found and one of the "customers" at said table asked which prize we wanted, and she would let the girl know. Well, when that girl returned, clearly, her partner, nobody made mention of it or even looked our way and the once cheery bingo hostess was more wrapped up in her friends. Moral of the story, they lure people in, charge premium drink prices, provide horrid service, then rig the game so they don't have to give anything away to paying customers. And yes, we got good, which also, was a mistake. The jalapeños wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese were awful! The cheese inside was still stone cold and they were dripping in oil. When our bill came, none of the happy hour prices were reflected in our tab, and we would have been charged full price had I not caught it! It was definitely disappointing, and I can't foresee us going back again. read more

To start, the music is really loud especially for a Sunday when it's evident a lot of the crowd is there watching NFL. Unfortunately our server forgot the appetizers we ordered, and were told the incorrect beers. For the food, the hot dogs were under seasoned and the buns were cold. For $11 on a single hot dog I would expect a lot higher quality and consistency. When the pretzel we asked for again appeared, it was hot and yummy, honestly the best food that was ordered. Koko's Beer Hall has taken over where Baker St. Pub used to be, which used to be an old hang out of mine, I had to check out Koko's. The place looks amazing. So much more spacious and bright. Lots of TV's, perfect for football season. I grabbed a seat at the bar, Blake and Boom were the bartenders. They were awesome! I had two beers while I was there and was being indecisive so they each helped me pick. I also got the cauliflower bites with buffalo and ranch on the side, delicious as always. They made the experience great and I'm looking forward to going back. Koko's is also under new management and the AGM was walking around checking in on guests making sure their experience was going top tier. Love to see a management staff that cares! Came into have lunch with my husband and daughter on Halloween. Decided to sit inside and originally was excited because lots of TVs with Halloween classics were on. The restaurant was not busy, and there was plenty of staff on the floor. It took an abnormal amount of time to get our drinks, even with three bartenders. Then, it took even longer for our food, three hotdogs and a salad-- last of which to arrive was the salad. The curry bratwurst was just ketchup. Halfway through our stay, it became difficult to hold a conversation because where we were seated, the music was incredibly loud. I hopped up to ask the bartenders to turn it down. It never happened. Upon my exit, I did share this feedback with staff who listened and appeared apologetic, as if to communicate I'm not the first to share this sort of feedback. We got the rest after another hour, and while it was comped due to the wait, it was also greasy and bland. I popped in for lunch on a Friday and really struggled to enjoy my time. The service was a bit rough, drinks were late to arrive and the mozz sticks were lukewarm and still solid inside- although I tasted citrus in the marinara and that made up for it a bit. My entree was the currywurst and it was not the curry best. It could use more curry and less ketchup. The music was also insanely loud during lunch.
